The sound of those clippers had a very sweet, pam. I know, it has been tough on that business in particular. For me it has been nice to have a haircut. Its definitely one of our big stories. Another big story is the weather. Steve paulson is here. We are watching the air quality and the wind, because we have a number of fire still out there. We do. They have been getting a break, though, because of the higher humidity and cooler temperatures. That has allowed them to get a lot of progress here. Unfortunately, they know the same thing i know. By the weekend it is going to get a lot tougher here. Today will be another day, but the air quality has improved a lot for many compared to a couple of days ago. It has dramatically improved, but still some unhealthy air out there. For some, it is the best they have seen or smelled and 45 days. 50 or 60s on the temperatures here. Interstate 80 looks okay as you drive towards vallejo. 8 02, lets go back to the headlines. That spare the air alert for the bay area has been extended again. Wildfire smoke is causing a high level of pollutants in their air. The 16th day in a row, the bay area air Quality Management group has issued a spare the air alert. It is in effect tomorrow, too. That will be day 17. To put it in perspective, if you remember how bad the air was in 2018 during the campfire, spare the air alerts were issued 14 days in a row at that time. So this recent stretch breaks that record of most consecutive alerts. There are unique challenges with forecasting the air quality this time around. Because there are so many fires, at one point it was 8 of the 9 counties. You know, there are so many points of impact for the bay area that it really has been hard to track exactly what will happen from day to day and hour to hour. That is been very challenging for our airquality forecasters during this period. Reporter bad air can lead to health issues, especially for people with breathing problems like asthma or emphysema. San Francisco Mayor london breeds says she wants to see some students back in the classroom for in Person Learning at least by the end of the month. Allie rasmus joins us now with more on the timeline. It is wanting to talk about it and another to execute this during a pandemic. Reporter that is exactly right, especially since there are so many parties and groups involved when it comes to reopening schools in any capacity in the middle of a pandemic. Even mayor london breed herself admitted that she does not have 100 control of this decision. The districts, the teachers, the parents are all involved in deciding when schools should reopen in San Francisco. Even so, the mayor says she wants to do everything within her power to get kids back in the classroom safely, and ideally by the end of this month, with the youngest students going back to school sometime in september, for at least some in person instruction. Under the mayors suggested timeline, middle schools could reopen by midoctober, high schools potentially by november, but she said it all depends on what happens with the spread of covid19 between now and then. Private and Charter Schools are expected to be the first to reopen, because reopening any Public Schools would involve additional negotiations with the teachers union. More than 50 schools have already submitted applications for limited in Person Learning in San Francisco. The mayor says Elementary School applications will be granted first, and she explained why. Especially those students who may not have parents or grandparents or Family Support to help them in their lessons. Even when we have provided them with devices and internet service, they are still falling further behind. We know how vital, how vital it is that kids have access to people who are able to help them with their lesson plans. Reporter now, San Francisco is in the state Health Departments read category when it comes to current covid19 infections. It is in better shape than just about every other county in the bay area with the exception of napa, which is also in that read category. Under state rules, if the county stays in that category for more than 14 days, then they can start taking steps to allow schools to reopen. Again, as mayor breed said, it is not her decision, and there is a process involved in reopening schools, especially Public Schools, it is a process that the mayor says should begin this month.
