Students who are doing this will have access to breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, even if they dont qualify for the free and reduced program. This . Ability helps meet the increased demand for assistance during the pandemic. Its unlikely that grab and go meal program will continue beyond the end of this year. Join us now, to talk more about this is a Senior Advocate in oakland. A lot of people are expressing relief that this Program Moves forward. It would have caused a lot of complications for people that need the free meals and dont necessarily qualify, right . We are seeing issues already where School Nutrition director having to turn away kids who were writing up on their bicycles, trying to access a meal. Fully, now that schools have this flexibility, many children will have access to meals. So people understand its a qualification and paperwork issue. You have a child that goes to the school and technically qualified. Maybe theres a couple other children in the house are different schools and parent can go to that school to pick it up. Of this stream lines everything. They dont have to show i. D. And they say a i need something to eat and the parents and children can pick it up. With the new rule, usda is allowing any child under the age of 18 show up at any school as long as they are participating under the new models. It was a paperwork challenge but it was an eligibility challenge. Without the new rules, if you were apparent and had a child in one school and your other child at a high school, you could not pick up meals for both kids in one place. This creates a lot of flexibility for schools to operate and easier for families to get access to what they need. Weve seen the need grow and people getting confused about where they can go to get help. The Food Insecurity is a issue for families. People lose jobs and did not even know they could get help. At food banks are also trying to figure out where do we meet the need. We have our schools and our food banks are teaming up in a lot of communities so that all families in any participating school will be able to show up and get access not just for a meal for that day but a meal for several days for their kids. And meals for their other kids in the community. Thanks to some of these flexibilities. There will be a lot of options for families who need help right now. Back in july, when were looking at the data, one in four families with children were struggling with putting food on the table. There significant need and we need the flexibilities to work. Were thankful that the fda and Trump Administration rolled them out. Are you trying to get the word out and do you have enough people showing up that are in need . Or is there still a messaging issue to get the word out . There is absolutely a need to get out messaging. This is a brandnew rule. A lot of families already have to be turned away. Previously without the flexibility, they might not have qualified. We really need the communities help to get the word out. The new options and families will be able to get these meals. We encourage to let families know and for schools to let parents of kids know that these are new options that they will be anticipating an. That being said, how important is the planning after september . Come january, we dont expect the position that families are dealing with, magically go away. How do they meet the need when this flexibility ends . We are going to have a problem come december if the flexibilities go away. Imagine the covid crisis wont go away come december. Even if kids are in school, we will need flexibilities around how meals are delivered with the way schools are planning on reopening. We will need usda to continue these extensions. We might need the help of congress to make sure theres enough funding to allow these flexibilities to continue. There are advocates that are working behind the scenes at a National Level and throughout california making sure that usda hears loud and clear that we need the flexibilities. We need members of the communities who are benefiting to reach out to their members of congress. Keep these flexibilities continuing past december, so schools dont have to have a stop meal approach on how they are going to get meals available to kids. Lets keep access and not prevent it from stopping at the end of the year. An issue we will continue to follow. Shortterm, glad that children that need the food will get it. You are talking to a food policy expert, thank you for your time. An east bay mother is demanding answers after hurt teenage daughter died in a car crash. It happened on 680 in walnut creek. To talk to me about the emotions going through you in that moment on the Assembly Floor. As a representative of an east bay, i feel an obligation to vote my districts needs. I had a child a couple weeks ago and the issues of balancing the two things was very real. I was hoping the proxy vote would be in place but i was told Maternity Leave does not qualify me for proxy vote. I was faced with the decision, do i stay home and represent my district in person . A lot of tough votes coming through. I just felt the need to be there including expand the family leave policy that i was the 41st vote on. Sure i was th for that and i got to hold my newborn child while i cast that vote. The experience that you had and many of us are going through, you demonstrate the challenges of being a working mother and a working parent. What do you hope is the take away . What you hope changes as a result of your experience . My hope is this is a better broader conversation about the stress many families are faced with right now. I happen to be on the floor with my newborn to try to do my job. There are low income families, service workers, people faced with tough challenges. Families across the east bay and the state. We have families that are to a job or they are trying to work, to members of the household in the family while the kids are doing distant learning. We are faced with incredible challenges. This showed us that we are not. Fared for this. We dont value working parents. Especially new paris. We need better policies, affordable childcare and better sick days. In a safety net for families that are trying to work and do the best thing for the family and honor the family relationship. My hope is a broader conversation were doing for our working families. There was a tweet maybe you saw or didnt former secretary of state, sit Hillary Clinton heard about what you did. Buffy wicks was told having given birth was not a sufficient excuse to pass the vote remotely so she bought her daughter on the floor to weigh in on an important housing bill. She put a strong a multiat the end of that. And let me get your thoughts on what its like to have someone like secretary clinton to weigh in on your experience. Not a lot of women who have done as much as she has. She more than many others realize the challenge women are faced with in the political world. Navigating parenthood and how you balance work and family and career and all these things. Its an honor to have her tweet about the experience. This is not about me, its about a broader issue our communities are faced with right now. We have to do better by our working families and moms and dads. Ive been breastfeeding my daughter for the last four weeks and awake every two hours to do that. Thats real life. And still have those experiences many women are going through right now. Hope that we can call upon broader policy reform. As we wrap up here we are running out of time. I want to contract what you experience with Senate Republicans at the state legislator who all voted remotely after one lawmaker, brian jones, tested positive for covid19. Do believe there was a double standard . As to who could vote remotely. The senate was conducting its own process and the assembly was conducting a different process. It is my hope that coming out of this, we can come together as an institution, a broad institution that represents californias and our needs and put together better reforms around proxy voting and remote participation so all members are safe. We have members that are pregnant now. Myself just had a baby. We have members that cared for sick love loans people to work and be there for their constituents, cannot put themselves to necessary risk. That is the goal and im looking forward to working with the speaker on that and make sure we have the ability to do that. We appreciate you taking the time. Will let you get back to the crew. Gotta get back to the 3year old. I get it, completely. To thank you for speaking with us. Bay area weather as we head towards the weekend. Another heat up. Another major warmup. It temperatures easily topping 100 degrees. We will be watching out for those numbers. Here we go, our thinking, at least we have some time to think about this. First let me start with thank you so much for letting me on today. Yes as you mention, firefighters as well as victims of fire and disaster that strike california, specifically this was formed in 1987 to support the families of firefighters that were lost in the line of duty. We started a Memorial Service we have every year. Each year we recognize those firefighters set of lost their lives the year before. We also have a Benevolent Program for the firefighters that lose their home in disasters while they are out working to protect others. The public at large, one that comes to mind is our save program. Aids to victims of emergency. We have about 103 departments around the state that have these debit or cash cards with them. Whenever someone loses their home or in severely damage to a disaster, where they are able to hand them a debit card with 250 that will be provided for essentials they may need right on hand, they may not have been able to take from their homes. Thats pretty incredible. Sorry to interrupt you. I think it is pretty incredible when you talk about all the help and people that need help when you talk about the disaster. We look at the pictures. We just lost a firefighter this week. And diana jones was a volunteer firefighter from texas. She came to california to help with her son who is also a firefighter. We see the magnifiers. Hearing these firefighters are because there was not enough people to get on the line. How important is it for people to recognize the sacrifice that the firefighters and their families are making to keep all of us safe . The firefighters do make sacrifices. In most cases, you see the fires, several large fires in california right now. Most of the firefighters, a majority of them come from local Fire Departments around the state and out of state. You mentioned they are working a double shift. They usually work 7 to 14 days straight and then they will come home. It is a sacrifice for them and thto its dangerous work. They do appreciate. The public is supportive of them and we appreciate their support. We appreciate all you do to help people that lost their homes and help firefighters and just be there to let them know they are not alone. We thank you for your time and the work you are doing. Sorry, were out of time to thank you for all you do to help. Thank you very much.
