Million individual pieces of person protective equipment arrived at a San Francisco warehouse and the city is beginning the process of passing them out to Small Businesses, helping them to reopen their could bees sooner rather than later. The mayor saying covid19 will be an ongoing obstacle businesses will have to battle, even as many reopen their doors for the first time in months. We received over a million pieces of ppe, and we have today masks, we have shields, we have hand sanitizer, and were passing them out directly to Small Businesses, at least a 30day supply to support our Small Business community in San Francisco. The first round of handouts was directed at the citys latino population and latino businesses. Latino Task Force Members saying their community has had more coronavirus cases per capita than other community and has more essential workers. The step we see today with this ppe and this distribution through this partnership allowing us to help protect those same essential workers that are providing services to all of San Francisco to keep this city running. Sf color collective said before the shutdown business was booming, but the shutdown means more than a dozen employees have been out of work here for months. Owner priscilla kandis said that safety has always been her top priority, and opening outdoors simply wont work for her. She is frustrated by the lack of communication and direction from the city when it comes to a timeline or requirements. We need to have, or we should have been given the parameters ahead of time so we are ready to go once they lift the shelter in place. The mayor saying she understands the frustration that Business Owners are expressing. Well make an announcement about that tomorrow, even though outdoor hair and nail stuff can happen, and well have a better clarity as to the future and when we will be able to use indoor and what that would mean. In some bay area counties today is the first day in a long time that hair salons were allowed to move indoors, but the east bay, many are frustrated, because one county is allowing indoor haircuts while a county right next door is next. Rob roth talked to salon owners today and is here now with more on what theyre saying, rob . Yeah, frank, two neighboring counties, to different sets of rules, and many people are saying it just doesnt make any sense. Reporter at this hair salon in Contra Costa County monday, his is a sight many feel was a long time coming. It was the first day hairstylists were allowed to work indoors. I feel blessed any day i can come to work, and everything that taken away has thrown so many of us stylists into deep depression, so this is absolutely wonderful thing to happen to us right now. Reporter under a new color coded system that governor gavin newsom unveiled friday, contra costa, like all bay area counties, except San Francisco and napa, is in the purple tier, the lowest ranking, but it does allow for indoor malls to operate at 25 capacity, and for hair salons so operate inside, providing they adhere to proper safety protocols such as masks and sanitation. Each Health Department has say in their own jurisdiction, and contra costa officials gave the okay. Im actually hoping this sticks. We know were safe. The states governor says rhode island has met five met tricks to reopen the schools including low hospitalization and spread rates statewide, and ability to return coronavirus test results within 72 hours, and having enough protective supplies. Chico state has canceled in person classes after roughly 30 people tested positive for the coronavirus. Gayle hutchison said that classes will be virtual only for the remainder of the fall semester. A woman is dead after driving off of highway 1 and plunging over a cliff over gray whale beach in San Mateo County this morning. It occurred about request this morning. The car came to rest about 200 feet down that cliff. Tom vacar joins us now with more on what happened. Tom . Sometime just before 8 00 monday morning, a gray sedan went over a cliff off he way 1 near gray whale cove state beach, south of the devil indianapolis slide tunnels in San Mateo County. The car was lodged in the rocks, down about 2 hurricane feet, but still well above the beach. A drone operated by the San Mateo County Sheriffs Office saw an apparently injured woman on the beach below. Witness reported that the occupant of the vehicle had possibly selfextricated and fallen over further down the cliffside. Reporter the sheriffs rescue team rap eled down the cliff and retrieved her. She was transported to San Francisco General Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The cause of the crash is still unknown, but where the car landed suggests that speeding was not an issue. It appears based on the initial investigation that the vehicle may have traveled off the cliffside at a low speed. Were treating this as a traffic collision at this time. Reporter in december of last year, a tourists dash camera videoed this lexus suv flying off a nearby cliff. Though some initially thought it was a hoax, it was later determined to be San Francisco resident tracy Ivory Sinclair who died in the crash. These events, while rare, looking locally over the last year, happen more often than you might think. Last april, two women and a dog died in San Francisco when their suv plowed through a fence crashing on to the parking lot below. And last february, authorities found two dead people inside a burned rental car 300 feet below another highway 1 cliff in monterey county. Firefighters continue to make progress against the deadly czu lightning complex fire in santa cruz and samantha counties. Its now 39 contained after burning nearly 132 square miles. 300 California National guard members joined firefighters today. Cal fire has also lifted evacuation orders for most of the town of ben lomond. And those northeast parts of the county should be allowed to return home within the next two days. More than 1200 structures have been destroyed in the two counties. In san joaquin county, evacuation orders have been issued for the scu lightning fire which continues to burn. It has burned in 7 counties including san joaquin, contra costa, and santa clara counties. It has destroyed more than 100 buildings, and 20,000 are still in danger. 2,000 firefighters are battling the flames. The dense brush is hampering operations, but they are making good progress. In the north bay, crews are starting to get the upper hand on the deadly lnu lightning complex fire. Containment has increased now to 63 . That fire has burned more than 586 square miles in sonoma, lake, napa, solano, and yolo counties. More than 1200 structures also been destroyed. Fires are working to contain flareups in the interior of the fire. Theyre also working to lift . Of the evacuation orders. The Sonoma County board of supervisors today passed a local Health Emergency due to the ongoing fire. The order is in response to the Hazardous Conditions caused by the lnu lightning complex fire. The order mandates that Property Owners and the community not enter fire zones without personal protective equipment, and also requires written consent for any cleanup activities in burn areas. Shortly after the lnu complex fire broke out earlier this month, the supervisors approve add separate proclamation declaring a local emergency, freeing up resources to help battle the flames. Even though cal fire is making progress on all of those fires, the air quality is still really bad around the bay area. This is the view looking to town San Francisco. On most days, you can see all of the skyscrapers, and even the east bay hills, but today eastern buildings were tough to see. In the east bay, a similar story. You can just barely see mount diablo in the distance. For most of the day, the air quality was in the unhealthy range. And it continues that way. We have air quality that is less than desirable. You know that air quality alert was going to end last wednesday, then they pushed it to friday, and then sunday. Now were do tuesday. You pardon me, monday. Now going into tuesday. We are definitely getting just the smoke from those fires they were prevails winds are just bringing that smoke in. So we have one north and one south, fire, and theyre a little west of bus sob that south west wind or that northwest wind which happens really throughout the day on this kind of year, the wind shifts and it blows smoke in. Its just that simple, and until those fires get contained, were staying in it. Thats why san jose, this is the airport here, and you can see just the yucky air quality, and its building up. I mean, weve had a run of this stuff now for over a week, and, you know, its definitely getting old. There are moments when it clears in your opinion the afternoon. Places in the coast have been getting breaks. But some areas like this in san jose, they had a nasty day all day today. Usually worst in the morning as you know, just because the inversion shall lows out. The surface winds are doing their best. Theyre doing their best to clear it out, but the ran into lot of the smoke is above these surface winds, so the smoke is not getting blown out. Let me shift this over to show you what the winds aloft are doing. Lets go up to lets just go 205,000 feet. Go to 5,000 feet. Its a very big difference. We go up a little higher than that, lets go up, like, 12,000 feet, a little bit different. So the winds change as you go up in elevation, and thats what were struggling with now. Were seeing a earth iserly wind which is bringing in smoke from the santa cruz fire. This is going to continue. Theres no big changes in the forecast in terms of wind direction, in which the pattern has been helpful for firefighters, but what we will see, as those fires become, as frank and julie were talking about earlier, those fires become more contained, less smoke, less problems for us. But i cant remember a run of bad air quality like this, frank, even with the paradise fires. Didnt last a week and a half two weeks. I cant say unprecedented, but i cant remember when it went this long. Yeah, and its something to take very seriously. Thank you. Right now the positive test is from an unidentified person. The test also postponed the Series Finale against the Houston Astros last night. They do say one is a first grader at sherwood, of elementary, and the other is a 6th grader. In an email statement, the District Board president said in part we have provided the family wait hot spot so that our students can safe live access classroom instructions from home. The Digital Divide is very real. The state has put out 2500 hot spots for students in need, to supplement the 1500 that have already been distributed. Over 8200 chrome books have also been handed out. But they do concede that dead spots in the city are a problem. We need to beef up our support for people, because the internet is now an essential part of work edge and case. Bannon must appear in federal court on may 24th to face fraud and conspiracy charges. So we have a very low barrier model, where as long as weve identified that they fit the really minimal criteria, which is literally homeless in the fremont area, well work closely with them to get their plugged in and connected to the services they need on site here.
