Press conference and a couple minutes from now. Before we bring you that line, here are the top stories for today. Firefighters are slowly getting the upper hand on three major complexes of wildfires that are burning around the bay area. Evacuation orders have been lifted for uc santa cruz for the czu august lightning complex fires , the biggest of fire is czu august lightning complex fires. They have burned 574 square miles in parts of the east bay, the south bay and the central valley. The lnu lightning complex fires are one third contained. These have burned 564 square miles, between sonoma and yolo counties. Protests continue into the morning in oakland, over the Police Shooting of jacob lake in kenosha, that it was mainly a peaceful protest. Hundreds of people gathered in downtown oakland, but some of the crowd set fires and smashed windows of several businesses. At the courthouse, glass doors were shattered. A fire was set inside. Oakland police say that several people were arrested. People living along most of the gulf coast are now dealing with hurricane laura this morning, it made landfall, early is a category four hurricane. It has now been downgraded to a category two, but it is still powerful, bringing strong winds and a large storm surge. There are hundreds of thousands of people with no power this morning, and we will bring you a live report from louisiana, later this morning, but right now lets go live to the news conference. We are now standing at 81,333 acres. We can confirm that we have 21 percent containment. There is however, 23,000 structures threatened by the fire. Unfortunately, we can confirm that there have been 646 structures that have been destroyed. 11 of the structures are in san mateo county, and 635 of them are in santa cruz county. Our personnel numbers are increasing as they arrive at scene, and we have 1982 firefighting personnel on the line. With that i will transition right over to the operations briefing from cal fire. Mark bennett. Good morning. The past few days, as we mentioned, we have had good success about establishing control lines around the fire and getting deeper into the fire to continue to extinguish the fire around the homesick, and start to create a safe environment as we enter more towards the population potential down the road. Again, and the north zone of our fire, we see great progress in the north zone. Again. This is a patrol and mop up status. It is protecting the movement of the fire towards Santa Clara County. We are very confident that that will hold and maintain. The park, again, the fire is just creeping down towards the control line where we can take advantage of suppression activities. The weather has completely mitigated the progression of the fire, which is good. As far as the operation getting down to fully extinguish it, it is painstaking. We are getting there. As we move down towards the coast, you can see the black lighting on the map. That is an area that has been extinguished. We are putting a control line around it. We are very confident that that is fully controlled. We are getting a lot of progress along that way and we have folks that are patrolling, making sure that that is fully out. Moving towards davenport, is a lot of progress there. That companies are working diligently so we can restore the community. The highway one quarter, they are working diligently to make sure that is open, and they are ready to receive people on that roadway. On the south end of the fire, you will see this here, we will put a black line on the map as through the next few days, the line is holding very well in the area, the secondary line, of course, for the protection of the uc campus, recently repopulated and for the community of santa cruz, they are in good shape. Especially with the upcoming weather that we will be seeing in the next few days, we will start getting warmer, drier, we will see a northwind produced a, pushing on that line. It will give us a goodwin test and that will really validate for us the line, and it being able to hold with a lot of confidence. Around felton, we have a good line around three quarters of felton. Yesterday, the big story was the burning operation that was going on on the north end, and tying into the bottom end of ben loman with the line that has been established. That had to be delayed due to the weather. It just was not conducive to burning conditions. We wanted to get the right conditions to get the best condition possible. The burn operation and that up starting later in the day. We had to take it slow. There was a painstaking process. But i personally witnessed was that it was going very well. We had adequate resources. Highly qualified resources, and a safe effective bird. They were able to get half, or three quarters done. They will continue the process today. Once it is ce year the easier leg of the burn, but we are comfortable with it. This is the weather, they want to make sure that we have an effective bird. We want to make sure it is effective and efficient. I will continue today. It will produce. It will be late hours. That shows that we have an effective bird. I can tell you are doing great work. Moving up ecuador, ben loman, builder cake, looking really good. We have an influx of a lot of resources throughout yesterday. All day long, messages came in from my operation section chief that said to the other resources as we receive them, divvy them out to partners, we are getting the resources accordingly to needs and strategy priorities. We were seeing everything from the engines, crews, which we need, the type i cruise. Everything was showing up and that we needed. We were putting everything directly to work. We were saving a few of them so that we can consult the shift, they were 24 hour shift. We dont want to overload a shift, or shift that is not staffed. We do a balancing act on top of that. Today, we have a robust shift to tackle this challenge. The rest of this is looking good as we move up three at highway 236, they are in their working so we can gain access and deeper and get into the park. Bonnie june, same thing. We have a county road work, with our specialty road crews that are going in, and getting that opened up. That is sewer inspection chris can get in there and the utility companies, they can get in and start doing their work. I know that pg e utilites has been and therefore force and getting the infrastructure running as well as the other facilities. We are in the point where they are getting their work done and we are getting our work done. It is a very symbiotic challenge. Your support, yesterday weather was not helpful to that. We could not get a lot of reconnaissance flights and it was not until late in the day that we got water dropping flights and. We did not have much success. We feel that moving forward with the oncoming weather, we will have a lot more success. We will go back to how we were a few days ago. Aircraft dropping a lot of water in support of the troops. We are another day closer to accomplishing our mission and getting this all done, getting people back where they want to be, at home. Speaking next, deputy chris clark. Good morning, a fairly quiet night for us out on the field. There were no arrests or citations as we continue that trend, which is a good thing. Last night we had 60 officers and deputies that were patrolling. Today we will have 42. 21 from the sheriffs office, 14 from the in county partners, and seven mutual aid folks from over the hill. In terms of calls for service. We responded to 10 welfare checks and three suspicious people. On a positive note, think you for the publics help on this, we located one of a three missing people that we had outstanding. I just want to say thanks to those that had called in and helped us with that. That brings our total to two. Again, we just encourage that if you have heard from those again, if you recognize them or know them, have them call us, or you call us. We would greatly appreciate it. Another thing that we are doing for folks at home, the Animal Services. They have been inundated with animal requests, and to check on animals. We assist them with that. Folks hit over 100 different homes in assisting Animal Services was taking care of pets that were left behind. And also this is doing everything they can to get out there and we are helping them with that. Obviously, as they spoke about, repopulation. That is the area where our focus is now in addition to security. With repopulation, i want to reiterate to folks who have been displaced, know your zone. I mentioned that yesterday. Go on to calfires website and look at the incident fact sheet for this fire and understand where and when so you are residing in. Watch to see. Follow the right channels. Right . Our social media, make sure it is a trusted source, and check the map. There is more information to come. There will be a lot of my information as we go along. Make sure you are checking those resources in taking a look at that map, so you know what zone you are in. Know your zone. Weight at checkpoints. I mentioned last night, i can understand peoples rush to get back. I would want to get back home. What we dont want to see, and what i want to assure you of is that we want to do this as systematically as possibly, to get people in as efficiently as possible. Dont feel like you have to wait at a checkpoint for more information. We can get you informed, so we can get you home as fast as possible. I can imagine this last night, will it be a federation between me and thief to my house . We will maintain. We will maintain a presence throughout the repopulation, as we go along and make sure that people are settled and safe, and things are okay for any of our plans changed. What we dont want to see is a ton of people at the checkpoint waiting. It makes the process less efficient. Keep apprised of the different Information Sources between cal fire, and i also want to touch on the Damage Assessment. We have set it a few times. The very areas that are continuing to be assessed. There is the Damage Assessment map, as well as resources for folks that have been displaced. Thank you. You have been listening to the latest on the santa cruz and san mateo counties. 1000 acres have burned. It is 21 percent contained. We will keep you posted with more information.
