The major story overnight was hurricane laura making landfall as a powerful category four storm in southwestern louisiana. Cameron, louisiana with wins of 150 miles an hour. We will be watching the storm all morning long. For us in the bay area, we have low clouds and hazy skies into the afternoon hours. The forecast i should be just a little bit warmer compared to yesterday. Yesterday was actually cooler than expected. Today a little bit of a rebound in most amateurs. Better weather letting firefighters gain ground on the big firefighters around the bay area. The biggest one is the scu complex fire. It is now up to 30 contained. The Santa Cruz Mountains, the czu complex fire is 21 contained. It has burned almost 127 square miles. And progress is being made in the north bay with the lnu complex fire lightning. Almost 550 more miles of burned. The woodward fire is now a percent contained. Authorities say firefighters have been making progress thanks to the fog moving in. Fires burning west of highway 1 and it has burned about four and half square miles. 90 homes were evacuated near the community of inverness while the evacuate is warnings for parts of c haven. Governor newsom said california is still gathering all available resources to handle what he calls, a historic fire season. We have 15,000 firefighters working the lines, handlers, dozers, fire engines, every conceivable asset that we have. So far the fires of burned 2000 square miles. That is earning more than the yearly averages from 2014 through 2018. In california still has about three months left in the fire season. Years of hard work went up in flames and smoke when as well fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains destroyed a beloved Christmas Tree farm. The owners of the historic crest ranch in bonnie dune told us they plan to rebuild. Fire crews were able to make a fire break and save some trees. The plan now is to replant more. That could take 5 to 10 years to grow. They are not sure when the ranch will we open but they will hope to bring it back to life soon. Will not let that die. We want to continue this and it is just a treasure. And in some of the different ways. Local Health Officials are responding after the cdc changed its guidelines for coronavirus testing. It is modifying its earlier recommendation that anyone who has been within six feet of an infected person for 15 minutes or longer be tested. Now the cdc says people who do not have symptoms dont need testing. Local Health Officials and medical researchers say that goes against good science. I think its not a good idea. I hesitate to say Public Health practice. But i dont think its a good idea. It seems entirely bizarre and in that it undercuts are very basic tenants of how we control and infectious disease. The department of health and human services, which manages the cdc says the changes, after meeting with the white house. But they did not say that why the change is happening. Starting tomorrow alameda and Contra Costa County are rolling back the restrictions. In Contra Costa County hotels will be open to the general public. And in Alameda County hair and nail salons will be allowed to do their business outdoors. Outdoor pools can open again and wine tasting rooms can open even if they dont serve food. For us we have to get our stuff back and get them trained. To get things rolling with the new protocols we have in place. I dont even know how we get its not feasible for us. One of the problem businesses will have to deal with when they set up shop outside, the smoke from the wildfires in the air. So even if they were allowed to open tomorrow some businesses may want to wait until the air quality is better. Superintendent of public instruction, tony vernon said yesterday, some students with disabilities and special needs will be allowed to go back to their schools. Many have complained because Distance Learning simply does not fulfill their needs. The updated guidelines apply to children in grades k12 in groups of up to 14 students. Children who are English Learners are at risk of abuse or neglect or students were homeless will also be allowed to go back to the campus. More than 100 schools and School Districts in california have been given waivers to resume in class instruction. Most of the schools are essential and most are private schools. That is according to a list from the state health department. Of the 109 waivers granted, only two are here in the bay area. Both are in santa clara county. But it was still a category for when it slammed into the gulf coast with heavy rain and strong winds overnight. The hurricane made landfall with winds of 150 miles an hour. Officials urged people in the storms path to evacuate as the National Hurricane center issued warnings of an un survivable storm surge that could be as high as 20 feet and reach up to 40 miles inland. Hundreds of elk are endangered. Amberly has that story. Reporter the seashore is home to several parts of elk. A population that is currently estimated at 445. Environmentalists say dwindling water supply, heat and wildfire are threatening the native species. We are concerned that the elk are going to die. There are 500 and there. 250 of 500 died for lack of water. Reporter i wildlife photographer frequents the area. He and other advocates say oakwood found that in the past week. They say they are concerned that the lack of water will kill elk, and the National Park service is not doing enough to protect them. We have been monitoring the water situation. But the i wildlife ecologist with the park service says that cameras in the area have shown that elk go to various sources of water including creeks. This photo shows an elk by the sea, water that flows naturally from the ground. There is plenty of water in the springs, that the elk go to. Some of them are dry. It is not the only water source that is available for the elk there. At the elk reserve, they say should the fire burn this way, many elk will be trapped. If they are not smart enough to go down to a couple of places where they can get down to water level, then, theyre going to paris. To find a balance between Natural Resources and Cultural Resources it is important to remember that these are multi generational beef and dairy operations.
