Were showing you the current numbers out there. 50s and 60s. Heres a camera, we have a little bit of hayes. We will see that show up as there is more daylight in the coming hours. We have a big rig that is reportedly on fire at 580 and north flint. That is causing a big traffic jam on 580 as you come towards the northglenn exit. We have brush that is on fire as you come up towards the north. This is a big mess. We will let you know what happens with that. Also, we are looking at the closure near the Boulder Creek area. Highway one is still closed for fire activity on the way to santa cruz. Highway 17 is still open. Lets go back to the headlines. Calfire is making progress to get the fires burning in the bay area out. Mornings on fox 2s allie rasmus talks about how crews gain control over the complex fire. Good morning, allie rasmus. Reporter the fire burning in san mateo, and Santa Cruz County, it is 19 percent contained. Every day for the past three days, you have seen the containment go up. It has and 79,000 acres and san mateo and Santa Cruz County. Firefighters are feeling more optimistic about tackling the they had a chance to go in and get a better look at the damage from the fire. 440 buildings were destroyed. That includes 320 homes. Most of those were in the county of santa cruz. As of the last update last night, on the northern end of these fires and san mateo county, it is not studying. The communities are protected, on the southern and they have fire lines as well. Things are looking good. They said they had a chance to go in and look at the areas around bonnie doon and Boulder Creek. That is why there was a lot of active fire. A lot of the fire has swept through the communities, and now they are getting a look at the damage again. 440 buildings are destroyed. The life of a man was acclaimed near davenport, he was pulling the fire when it came through. Due to damage assessment, we will assess the power lines and infrastructure. It is too early for anyone to go back home. Here is what the fire Section Chiefs had to say. All right. I guess we do not that sound for you, but people had been forced to evacuate this fire. They are anxious to return and they cannot do that just yet. The Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Office said two people and the evacuation zones have been reported missing have now been located and they are okay, but, they are having detectives looking for five other people in the evacuation zones who are unaccounted for. And about an hour from now, calfire will have another update on what happened with the lightning fire overnight, and they will talk about whether or not the containment line health, which they believe they will hold it. They have made progress on the fire and they are feeling optimistic but we will have more details and just one hour from now on mornings on fox 2. Allie rasmus, mornings on fox 2. The Santa Cruz Emergency Operations Center has created a map showing a house by house view of the damage, showing preliminary damage assessments for many neighborhoods using colorcoded icons. Green means no damage, yellow is minor damage. Orange is for major damage to buildings, and buildings that are completely destroyed will be designated and ready. A firefighters home who was lost in the fire is pushing past is lost and helping others affected by the fires. The 49yearold david cerda with the presidio he got the call that his home was destroyed. Santa, is not giving up. He has a job to do any plans to return to work battling fires by the end of this week. I am not the only one who has lost my home, and Everything Else. The amount of support that i am receiving, and, continue to receive, is amazing. They plan to relocate as soon as next week. It is day 10 of the firefighting battle between the scu lightning complex fires. It is the biggest of the california wildfires. It is burning in seven counties between the diablo range in the east bay and the central valley. Almost 572 square miles. It is 20 percent contained. The weather is now cooler, and the humidity is high. All of that is helping these firefighters. 72 bay area congressman will hold a town meeting today about to the buyers that are affecting their districts. East bay congressman alex strahl well and the congressman will host a Facebook Live town hall about the wildfires. They will be joined by fremont fire chief Curtis Jacobson and jack jacobs of cal fire. More help is coming to light to the lane you fires. 250 members will be here in a few days joining the 2200 firefighters that are already on the front lines. The lane you fires have destroyed or damaged 1200 homes or outbuildings and earned 557 square miles. The lnu fires are 27 percent contained. This could be hurricane laura, turning into a category four storm later on today. Winds are 150 miles an hour in the northwest at 15 miles an hour. As we come in closer, it could be reaching category four status. Here is the eventual track, moving up to the north along the border of eastern texas, western louisiana and close to lake charles the key here is a rain fall on the order of 5 10 inches. We have hurricane warnings out but the storm surge is extremely dangerous as it continues to build. It could be on the order of 10 15 feet. What does that storm surge look like . You can notice the levels are going up. The wind is now pushing a mass of water that is closer to the property there. It could be about 12 feet. That will be a serious concern. Fires for today, no thunderstorm threat. The winds will be increasing throughout the day, into the afternoon hours. We could have winds on the order of 1525 miles an hour. There has been a preset towards fairfield with winds that are over 20 miles an hour. Here is the plan this morning. This blue contour will link up with winds, and then the yellow will approach 20 miles an hour. The winds will be the factor out of the west, making moisture. Any kind of wind is obviously a challenge for the fire crews. Day was talking about improving air quality. A lot of areas report good air quality for napa and fairfield. Even for San Francisco and oakland, levels are in the yellow for livermore. In the bay it is not so bad. Santa cruz reports moderate levels. These conditions can change hour by hour. It looks like temperatures are not like last week, but temperatures are trending up area if you think about the sequence of events over the past two weeks, we had to the excessive heat. The heat warnings. The record high temperatures. You have a Lightning Storm and then i temperatures once again. It was the worst situation, the were sequence of events to set up that fire event. Thankfully the temperatures have cooled off a bit. Here is the plan today. Patchy fog this morning. More sunshine. It is not very good at all if you have to slog through it on 205 or 580, coming in from tracy and getting over to the dublin area. It is going to be a tough commute. We are looking at other commutes. Here is the bay bridge. Traffic is still okay. Lets go back to the headlines. And her sick interstate 680 is open after a deadly crash before 11 p. M. Last night on 680 northbound, near the north main street offramp. Three people were killed in that crash. Chp is still investigating. The lnu fire complexes threatening a community that has more than their share of devastating wildfires. The current fire is burning towards middletown in lake county, and getting dangerously close to the calfire complex there. Now calfire has called and bigger aircraft to help drop more water and fire retardant in the area. The ground crews are setting backfires to try to contain the lines. We have been here for five years and we lost our house and the valley fire. We moved around and moved back. We went through this last year. So many of our friends and neighbors are out of their home, and they cannot work. In the midst of Everything Else we are going through and our country. People that we talked to say they are confident that calfire is doing everything that they can to keep the community from burning again. 77,000 people have been evacuated by the fires that are burning in the santa cruz mountains. Some say that they are getting very anxious as well. Santa cruz county has set up a dozen evacuation site due to the august lightning complex fires. Some say that the transition has been difficult as they have now been out of their homes for more than one week. One family is taking a break by visiting their horse at an animal evacuation site. It is stressful. We are staying at an extended stay hotel, with six other dogs and a cat. You know . We come down here to see monterey. We are just trying to stay calm and start making a plan in case there is a big change. That is a hard one. Making the plan for the future. Evacuees say they are grateful for the crews fighting to protect their homes. Blankets, sleeping bags, sanitizers and other donations are being accepted at the Santa Cruz County warehouse on hamline avenue in santa cruz. It has been a week since the wildfires started, people are looking for ways that they can show support for others, including the firefighters. Firefighters cheered as they headed off to the 24 hours shifts on the fire lines. 100 people showed up for yesterdays a sendoff, when they returned, there were signs at the hotel room thanking them for their hard work. I wanted to send them off, having them know that we care about what they are doing. He for a few days, everyone was scared. The only people that we saw who were brave enough, or the firefighters. Girls and san jose found their way to think the firefighters, delivering baked goods and homemade cards to their local firehouse. The girls say that the firefighters are there heroes. They are exhausted and tired and they deserve something that is really thoughtful. If we did not have to worry about coronavirus, i would give you a big hug. How about an air hi5 . Yeah. Other Community Members raise money to donate to the volunteer firefighters in Santa Cruz County. They are providing snacks, water and personal items to the firefighters who say that they are part of the job that they do and they are grateful for the community support. Today, a News Conference at ucf about the potential impact of the coming flu season and how to control the spread of coronavirus. Professors will talk about what can happen to patients that have both covid19 and the flu. It will talk about the new university of california study showing that faculty members and students need a flu shot by the 21st. Mark ali says that counties should begin telling people what will be open and what will not. During the coming labor day weekend, we need to try to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. He warned that the big social gatherings during the Holiday Weekend would set back the progress that california has made in recent weeks, in reducing the spread of the virus. The city managers and monterey, pacific bell, carmel, and santa cruz have already said that they are going to close local beaches during the Holiday Weekend, between september 5 and september 7. 4400 coronavirus cases were reported yesterday in california, the lowest number since the end of june. 105 people died from the virus on monday. The rate of positive virus cases average 6. 3 percent over the past two weeks, and 5. 7 percent in the past week. Both are trending below californias goal of eight percent. While the numbers are encouraging, there are questions as to whether or not california is prepared to reopen businesses. The Small Business owners rallied in San Francisco in front of city hall. They were frustrated about the economic toll on them. A professor had said that the reopening showed that california was not committed enough to taking precautions to stop the spread of coronavirus. The reason it did not work, is because people were not social distancing and not wearing masks. Theres nothing magical about stopping the pandemic. We know exactly what we have to do. It is just getting people to do it. San francisco Business Owners want Public Officials to give clear directions about what Health Measures may allow them to reopen safely. The bay area air Quality Management district is extending the spare the air alert through friday because of the smoke through the wildfires. The smokefilled sky will make it unhealthy for sensitive groups in particular, like the elderly and small children. Keep an eye on them, this is until the forecast improves on saturday. It closer to the 19 lightning complex, temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. You will notice that all of the moisture levels are up. They are going up in the walbridge fire. That is a very Nice Development for tonight. Close to the woodward fire, there is still a little bit of a breeze out there. The winds will likely accelerate into the afternoon hours. The same can be said closer to the august lightning complex fire in san mateo and Santa Cruz County. As far as the air quality right now, we are showing you a bunch of green sensors that indicate good air quality. This is a nice change for this morning for San Francisco and oakland. Livermore has moderate levels and it looks like santa cruz has changed a bit here with the orange contour which is unhealthy for sensitive groups. The spare the air alert continues through friday. The sentencing trial is underway for a gunman that killed more than 50 people last year at a mosque in christchurch. He pled guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder and terrorism in the attack where 51 people were killed into mosques. He told the judge that he will not be speaking in his defense during the sentencing trial. 90 survivors and family members of victims have given emotional statements and the courtroom. I do not forgive you. Not sure what you have done. While you are in prison, you will come to the reality that you are now and how. Only fire awaits you. The trial will wrap up tomoto impose the maximum penalty, life in prison without the possibility of parole. Police and oakland are searching for the person who shot and killed a college student. The shooting happened nearly 2 weeks ago at a Graduation Party for the victims friend on 65th avenue near international boulevard. Xavier patton attended northridge and came back home to the east bay to live with his sister because of the pandemic. The sister says she raised xavier after they lost their mother to cancer six years ago. Shortly after august 15, he was shot and killed in the parking lot of a housing complex. You send your kid to a party, and they might not come home. That is unsettling for me. Nearly everyday when i come home from work, he would ask me how my day was. He cared on that level. Im supposed to come home and say how was your day . Police say a white suv and a gray nissan sedan drove by and someone from nissan opened fire. They do not believe that xavier and his friends were the target. A people have been arrested with a crime ring connection in oakland. Nine guns and 14,000 and cash were found. The arrest happened last week at an air b b in south San Francisco. So far, Oakland Police have seized 600 weapons that are connected to crimes. Later today, there will be a funeral for the san quentin prison guard that died from the coronavirus. The service will be for gilbert blanco at the bay area mortuary in san jose. Family members and friends will be a part of the procession, and th limited because of covid19. He will be laid to rest in fremont and irvington cemetery. He was the first worker at san quentin prison to die from the coronavirus. And san mateo county, advocates and family members will rally outside of the maguire correctional facility in redwood city, claiming that the sheriff is not protecting inmates. They say that only 20 percent of the inmates have been tested. San francisco plans to close the county jail at the hall of justice, a lot sooner than expected. The San Francisco mayor said that inmates and city staff will be moved out of the jail at the end of next week. The closing date had previously been set for november. The jail on bryan street is seismically unsafe and is crumbling in terms of infrastructure, and often they have sewage leaks. It has outlived its usefulness and, and being seismically unsafe does not just put the people that are incarcerated in danger, but also the staff, the deputies, contractors and all of the Community Members who come to visit. The jail was built back in 1961. It is the third jail to be closed in San Francisco since 2010. The city of San Francisco has joined a lawsuit against the United StatesPostal Service and the trump administration. The lawsuit includes a coalition of cities and states claiming that the postmaster general is trying to undermine the november election by limiting Postal Service operations. The suit says that recent changes to Postal Service operations by louis dejoy have delayed a male nationwide. Louis dejoy has pledged to suspend changes at the post office until after the rallies are being held across the country by people who would like to show support for the Postal Service.
