Some areas over kensington, maybe the berkeley area, emeryville, just on the edge of that, it is stretching over the berkeley hills. As we shift to the north, we have more widespread rain tracking some up over Higher Elevations. Calistoga is shifting in, napa is seeing light rain as well. Into the sierra, where we started earlier this morning, quite a bit of thunderstorm activity quite a bit over the tahoe area. It has shifted to the east. It has shifted further to the east. For today, the red flag warning will continue until 5 00 this afternoon. For isolated thunderstorms, we have the possibility for strong gusts, as dave mentioned, that is not good for our firefight. That could create new fires. Temperatures will be just a bit cooler. Unfortunately, the air quality is not going to improve a whole lot. The lightning complex fire keeps burning this morning in several northbay counties. The big concern is extreme weather, causing new fires. Interviews Sara Zendehnam is here now. You have all the latest information. Morning, sara. Good morning, this is the largest of the wildfires, the second largest in california history. At the last update, cal fire says this fire has grown to 543 square miles and is 21 contained. So far, 871 structures have been destroyed and 234 have been damaged. Cal fire assigned 40 people to discuss the damage caused by these fires. At a News Conference yesterday, they said they are controlling the wildfire in the west. It is within the complex. Steve canyons, redwood trees and a lot of debris are making it tougher for firefighters to get into the area. More resources are coming in to help fight the lightning complex. While under a red flag warning, there is a concern about new fires starting. We do have a plan. In order to immediately those attack what im asking from all of you, with the weather predicted, the weather warning issued, i cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared to leave. Reporter the Sonoma CountySheriffs Office says they did not have any issues in the evacuation zones this weekend. They ask everyone to stay out of these areas and leave if you are told to. This is compared to the ccu complex fire in san mateo and santa cruz counties. Almost 540 square miles have burned. They are only 10 contained. So far, firefighters have kept the flames away from heavily populated areas. Only five buildings have been lost. Cal fire says 20,000 buildings are in danger. This already test firefight is far from over. We have been messaging to all of our cooperators that we will have to set manageable paces because this is going to be a very longterm incident. Firefighters say battling these wildfires will be a major challenge in the days and weeks ahead. Resources are stretched very thin all across california. They fear this could be californias worst fire season ever. This morning, we will get an update on the firefight against the csu lightning fires complex. Now, cal fire will hold a 6 00 a. M. News conference. We will broadcasted live on mornings on 2. Stay with us. The csu lightning complex fire is only 8 contained. It has also claimed its first victim. The body of a 70yearold man who had been reported missing in the community of last chance was found. That area near the town of davenport has been under a mandatory evacuation order. Cal fire says that fire has burned 115 square miles, destroyed 163 buildings, and damaged 12 more. It is still not clear how many homes are among them. I had an opportunity to go out on the line and view more of the fire area. It is pretty devastating, the amount of destruction that has occurred, not only in the watershed, but to the residents in the community here in santa cruz county. Several of People Living in the area say they are staying so they can try to save their homes. They teamed up in an effort to fight one of the fires in the ccu lightning complex group. There are also evacuations in barron county. Marin county. That fire is 5 contained. There were no injuries reported yet. No buildings have been damaged yet. The flames are of damaging more than 1600 buildings. People are on standby. Be prepared to leave wildfire officials are closely watching the weather this morning. With that is the chance for possible thunderstorms and lightning. I know that is not a welcome feeling. For the northbay, east bay, south bay, the entire bay area, you can see from the shade of red. Starting at 11 00 last night, you can see all the moisture coming in from the south of baja, california. If you take a closer look over the sierra, you can see the thunderstorm activity and the lightning there. For us, i think, one Lightning Strike was detected over southeast areas of the scu complex. That is some good news. The risk is not gone completely. Although, you can see, this morning, that air mass is a lot more stable than what we had. Lets check in on some of the shower activity, even some of the rain over the area of richmond. We have light rain following the san rafael bridge. As we go north, the bodega bay, over near cloverdale, quote calistoga, this is getting into the winds. It is generally light out there. Fairfield is reporting 12 miles per hour. I am seeing a little bit of breeze over are the that could develop. That could bring strong gusts. That is something we do not want to see, especially with the firefighters and the fight going on. That is south of milwaukee. Police were responding to a domestic incident. Neighbors say the shooting incident was trying to break up a fight between two women. We are not sure what led to the shooting by police. Jacob was shot sevens seven times in the back. Last night, neighbors said the shooting could be the breaking point for kenosha. We saw police using their brute force, their manipulation tactics, they used every single tactic in the book to get over and manipulate us. The criminal investigation will investigate this shooting. We have cloud cover along the coastline. That goes into the afternoon and into tonight. That cloud cover remains along the coastline. It is partly clear for the rest of us. He was a view of the temperatures outside. The humidity and cloud cover in place, 60 degrees right now in San Francisco, 65 for oakland, upper 60s to 70 for inland cities. You can see a few scattered showers out there this morning. Oakland has seen some at times. Over towards orinda, lafayette, berkeley, we have some right here over areas towards american canyon. Firefighters say that the weather over the weekend helped make progress with the wildfire in the san mateo and santa cruz counties. Allie rasmus is here with more on these fires. Reporter good morning. Yes, that fire has burned 74,000 acres. Cal fire was able to get some containment on this fire, 8 . It seems low, but any progress is good after a weeklong firefight on this ccu lightning complex fire in san mateo county. Hundred 60 homes have been destroyed. Thousands of people have been evacuated. Cal fire says one person died in this fire. The victim was found on last chance road in davenport in the santa cruz mountains. That is near redwood state park. The latest update, at 10 00 last night, the battalion chief says the northern end of the fire has not spread. It is good news. The fire is also not moving east towards Santa Clara County. Yesterday, fire crews were a able to build lines on the east side of the fire. We were able to establish a control line running between the highways a couple days ago. It was a dozer line that gave us a really good catchers mitt. The firebreak could provide protection as well as safety. Reporter they have opened a medical clinic, that is one of several Evacuation Centers that are helping people evacuate and get medication they may need. They will have physicians on hand to help with medical needs. Cal fire will have another briefing of the status of this fire. That briefing is at 6 00 a. M. That will be in the next half hour. We will have another update for you. Reporting live, allie rasmus, ktvu, fox 2 news. Wildfire firefighters have another problem, a fire commander was robbed. The ground commander at the ccu lightning complex fire was directing fire crews on where to go when someone got into his car, stole his wallet, and drained his bank account. Frankly, i cant believe someone would have the nerve to break into a firefighters vehicle, or to enter their vehicle to steal from them when they are there to protect the community. This comes days after five people were suspected of looting in santa cruz county. The Sheriffs Department has 60 deputies and 34 from other agencies in the fire zones to protect burglaries and looting. The time is 5 35. Fire crews in Monterey County are working to make sure to fires do not merge. These have burned more than 86 square miles. Evacuation orders are affecting People Living in carmel valley. The river fire is 20 contained. Nine buildings have been destroyed. The carmel fire is 15 contained. 21 buildings have been destroyed. Some bay area students spent the weekend helping others. They collected donations for fire victims. Donations of clothing, water and canned goods, tents, sleeping bags, these will go to the victims of the lsu complex fire. We got a lady who brought over handmade facemasks and blankets. Go to good use to these fire victims. This is the third year in a row that the High School Marching band has collected donations for fire victims in the area. After seeing her friends and neighbors hit hard by wildfires, some students are doing something to help them out. Lauren and her friend put together an essential food drive for vacaville wildfire victims. When they put out the call for help, the Community Stepped in in a big way. Volunteers came by to help. They donated supplies for people who had to evacuate. Honestly, it is about helping the community. The way this community is coming together is truly amazing. We have a change of clothes or two. We have some laundry things and snack items. They were kind enough to put this together for the community. We have everything we own. Yeah. This was held in the parking lot of the high school. One parking lot was for people making donations. The other was for the victims who needed donations. Firefighters around the bay area are on standby. We may have another round of dry lightning today. People living in the east bay hills are told to be ready to get out quickly if they have to. Katie herman says her car is packed with the most important belongings. She has a full tank of gas. You have to be ready. You have to be smart. Fire is fast. I worry about the traffic. There is a red flag fire warning in effect until at least 5 00 tonight. East Bay Regional Parks are closed. Fire inspect nurse are on duty to make sure that they get the word. Fire crews are stationed in the hills in case there is a Lightning Strike that could possibly start another fire. We have picked up accumulation over the santa cruz mountains. That is some good news there. The Sacramento Valley and the sierra, the Higher Elevations are seeing a whole lot of activity compared to what we are seeing at home. It is beginning to wind down. We are not in the clear just yet. That is why we have the red flag warning in place until 5 00. This will continue to push north. We already see that. Half an hour ago, we had widespread showers that are now moving into lake county and further north. If we move closer, we have light rain in vallejo. That is stretching up towards st. Helena and off to the west. You might have a few scattered showers. Here is a good view of what is going on in the north bay area. We have some fire activity. It is a mild to warm start with all the cloud cover and humidity. When we are talking about humidity, everywhere from 49 to the eastside road area, then 40 over the atlas peak area, the winds are generally light. Humidity and light winds are doing us a favor. If we shift over into the santa cruz mountains, take a look, 97 percent reported at la honda, 97 at Boulder Creek. That humidity helps to slow the fire. If we can get some rain, that would clear out just a touch. As you know, smoke and haze are not going to go away anytime soon. That continues to impact the air quality. That is unhealthy for some groups today. In the east bay, Santa Clara County remains unhealthy today. Temperatures will be cooler for some. Fire crews are working to contain a huge fire that has been burning across the bay area for the past week. One of these fires is the scu lightning complex fire. Claudine wong is joining us with an update. Good morning, claudine. That morning. Lets talk about containment. They are trying to get their arms wrapped around this fire. It is only at 10 . Lightning complex fire. It is not just a long day, we are talking about a long road ahead as this fire spans several different counties. Lets take a look at the map. There is scu lightning complex fire right there on the side of your screen. There are two zones now. There was the deer zone, that is at the top of the screen. We are focused on these bottom two complex fires. Now it is huge. 343,000 acres, that is what began as multiple fires. It is at multiple locations. Santa clara, san joaquin, way more. They merged these fires into a complex fire. So far, firefighters have kept the huge flames away from the heavily populated areas. It is their focus. They are trying to keep it away from structures and people. The structures have been destroyed. There have been four injuries. Cal commanders say thousands of buildings are in the path of these fires. For the 23 crews, more than personnel, this is about preparing for the long haul. We have been messaging that we have the need to set manageable paces. This is going to be a very long term incident. Reporter you have for helicopters, 30 dozers, all the way everything going to this, about 1300 firefighters on the way. It does sound like a lot. Its a lot of numbers and a lot of people out there. Tom was out there last night talking to folks. They are saying, look, we have 1300 on the line. Normally, they would want 9000 firefighters. When you compare that and how stretched their resources are, it puts things into perspective. We are specifically watching dry lightning this morning. We are watching things into the afternoon. At this point, they are taking it hour by hour. One fire official calls this a marathon. That is the very latest. Hundreds of Prison Inmates are now battling wildfires and in other parts of the state. The pandemic is creating new problems in the effort to put inmates on the fire lines. Last month, one dozen camps were locked down and placed under quarantine due to covid outbreaks. Only half of the prison crews are available. They play a Critical Role in not only the extinguishment of our fires, but the work they do when fires are not occurring throughout the state. We want to change our lives. We want to come back to society. We want to get back. Prison inmates can volunteer for firefighting duty if they are nearing the end of the sentence and secured a low security risk. A woman who lost her son and husband in a tragedy is ready to talk about her devastating loss. She is hoping her experience with addiction and loss can help others as the opioid epic epidemic continues to claim more lives. Our reporter sat down with the young woman and learned what she is doing to give back and honor her son. Reporter leo was a bright eyed and beautiful baby boy. He was a brighteyed baby. Here he was on his first birthday. What happened to the 13month old shock to the community and devastated a family. There was nothing i could do. To save him you know . I tried cpr. I was the one to call 911. Reporter it was at this house emy found her baby boy, dead, his father, nearby, unconscious after overdosing on a powerful drug. He later died at the hospital. Liam accidentally ingested the drugs. Unfortunately, he was only here for a short time. I believe he came here to save me and show me what true love meant. Yeah, he was here to show me what love truly felt like. Reporter emily is making peace with the tragedy. As an addict herself, she is confronting her own demons. She has committed her life to helping others get clean. If i can get through this, stay clean, help other people, this goes to show than anyone can save their life from addiction. Reporter she recently started working with of the lemonade project, helping addicts get out of addiction, they are trying to educate people about the opioid crisis. I want to share my story, hoping it will open their eyes, show them recovery is possible for anybody and everybody. Reporter it began her son was born. She and her husband started using heroin. It is one of the largest burning in the bay area right now. At the last update, cal fire said the complex has grown to 543 square miles. It is 23 contained. So far, 871 structures have been destroyed. 234 have been damaged. At a News Conference, they spoke about their top priorities. One is controlling the walbridge fire. It is a 67 square mile fire within the complex. Steve canyons, redwood trees and structures are making it tougher for firefighters to get to the area. Another big area of focus is above calistoga. Cal fire has put engines to help keep it from spreading. With a red flag warning in effect, new fires can spark. That means evacuation orders are possible.
