It has been hot and windy and smoky. Oh gosh. I know pam. Good morning to you. Welcome back. And yes, i think moving forward we are going to see temperatures come down a little bit more. The marine layer will continue to deepen so that is a bit of news that is good. This morning getting a few scattered showers. Not much accumulation. But we welcome any kind of rain. We do not want to see the thunder and the lightning. So far it has been really really quiet. Here is a look at stormtrac are to where you can see we have some white shower activity. We will start right around the bay bridge where we might have a few scattered showers there. Switching over the downtown chinatown area. As we ship north a few light sprinkles. If we had to the sierra, this is where it has been really active. Thunderstorms over the tahoe area shifting east. You can see into nevada. We will continue with isolated thunderstorms at least the risk of. And without a red flag warning that continues for area into the afternoon. That and in addition to the hazy skies and another spare the air alert. When we come back i will have more details for today and talk about that air quality out there in your extended forecast. Lets see whats happening almost highways this morning. Good morning rosemary. A b that are in the Santa Cruz Mountains area that i want to show because of these fires. This has not changed from the Boulder Creek santa cruz area. 17 is passable but highway 1 for a substantial portion is closed. In the fire zone, you should only know that. But just in case you dont you can get through on 17. We dont have a lot of slow traffic in the traditional spots. Lets go back to the headlines. More than 115 square miles have been burned now by the czu complex fire in san mateo and santa cruz counties. Take a look at a map compared to the scu complex fire. It is burning in northern Santa Cruz County and now it is a percent contained. 131 homes have been destroyed by the flames. 24,000 buildings are threatened by the fire. The Santa Cruz County is urging fire victims were sleeping out doors to move indoors during this red flag warning. More than 25,000 residents have been displaced by fires in that region. The shelter capacity is limited because of the need for social distancing. The county says free Hotel Accommodations may be available for some of the evacuees. Also they have opened a new shelter at Harbor High School for about 75 evacuees. And there is some Space Available at college. Santa cruz bible church, the congregational church, and Simpkins Swim Center in santa cruz. Why the firefighters are working nonstop against all of the firefighters burning they have another challenge to deal with as well. Theft and looting. In one case a fire commander was the victim. Cal fire says of fire commander at the czu complex fire was directing firefighters when someone got into his car, stole his wallet , and drained his bank account. Frankly i cant believe somebody would actually have the nerve to break into a firefighters vehicle. Or enter their vehicle to steal something from them when they are there to protect the community. This comes just days after five people were arrested and suspected of looting in Santa Cruz County. The Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office says they have 60 deputies from our office and 34 for other agencies in the fire zone. Their goal is to prevent burglaries and looting. Cal fire admits that it staffing and resources are stretched to the limit as they battle these huge wildfires burning around the bay area. Some People Living in the Santa Cruz Mountains and other areas that are threatened by fires are taking action to help protect their homes. They are using Text Messages to coordinator the Community Efforts since selfservice is often unreliable in the fire zones. Cal fire has words of warning during this wildfire crisis. No offense to anybody, but most are not trained professional firefighters. And although they think they are doing the right thing and doing a good thing, they inadvertently put themselves into harms way. Cal fire is reminding everyone living in a fire zone to keep uptodate on any new developments. They should immediately follow any evacuation orders. Fire crews in Monterey County are working to make sure fire and carmel fire rge. Combined have burned more than 86 square miles. Because of the locations of the fires, evacuation orders affect peoples living self and north into carmel valley. It is 20 contained and nine buildings have been destroyed. The carmel fire is 50 contained while 21 buildings have been destroyed there. Our time is 436. Some bay area high sc student spent the weekend helping others who need help. The venetian High School Marching band collected donations for fire victims. Donations of clothing, water, and canned goods, tents, sleeping bags, and other needs will go to the lnu complex fire victims. We have a lady who brought over some blankets that she crocheted then handmade facemasks. So another great thing that is going to go to good use for these fire victims. This is the third year in a row that the High School Marching band has collected donations for bay area fire victims. After seeing friends and neighbors get hit hard by the wildfires, some vacaville fiery School Students decided they wanted to help out. Zana rosenquist and her friend, Lauren Gammon put together a food and supplies drive for vacaville wildfire victims. When they put the call out for help, the Community Stepped up in a big way. Volunteers were stopping by to help and also donating supplies for people who had to evacuate with only the clothing on their backs. Its mostly about helping the community and how this community is coming together is just really amazing. We have a change of clothes or two. We have some laundry detergent here and a few snack items. These guys are kind enough to put together for the community. And then we have everything we own. This job was held in the parking lot at vacaville bicycle. One section was for people making donations, the other was for fire victims who needed donations. A Southern California Air National Guard wing is helping to battle the flames here in the northern part of the state. You are looking at video from the cockpit of a c130 tanker. One of several planes dropping fire retardant on the fires in alameda, santa clara and san joaquin counties. This tanker and another one have dropped 300,000 gallons of fire retardant on the flames. There are also seven helicopters scooping up water from reservoirs and then dropping it on the fire. President trump has approved financial help from the federal government to help thousands of people affected by the wildfires. The federal relief will include plans for temporary housing, home repairs, and lowcost loans to pay for uninsured property losses. Governor newsom said some of that money will also help with crisis counseling. And other social services. Firefighters say the best help they can get is no more lightning, no more wind, and also cooler weather. We dont expect any of that today. Firefighters around the bay area or on standby. We do expect even more dry lightning today. People living in the east bay hills say they are prepared to get out quickly if they have to. Katie morgan says her car is packed with the most important belongings and she has a full tank of gas. You just have to be ready. You have to be smart. Because fire is fast you have to go. When i worry i worry about the traffic. There is a red flag warning in effect until at least 5 00 tonight. And east Bay Regional Parks are closed. Fire inspectors are on duty to make sure hikers and cyclists know about what is happening. And fire crews are stationed up in the hills just in case there is a Lightning Strike that starts yet another fire. We have a more stable air mass in place and im seeing a few scattered showers out there. But at least for the bay area we are not seeing anything in the way of thunderstorms at the moment. We will have the risk of highs thunderstorms. The National Weather service continues until 5 00 with the red flag warning. And the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and dry lightning would be a big concern with this. And strong gusty conditions anywhere from 35 to 45 miles per hour. Because those with become very erratic. But a much more stable air mass in place than what we experienced last week at this time. If we move in closer you can see in the bay area, the south bay and most of the central bay partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. But in the clear when it comes to any activity going on here at the north bay we do have some scattered shower activity which hopefully is beneficial for our firefighters out there. Here is a look at bodega bay and we have some light rain there. And it stretches up and then if we move inland we have a little bit around napa. The east bay shore seeing a few scattered showers at times. We picked up some over San Francisco. The Central Valley and up of the sierra a different story where a lot of thunderstorm activity has been reported since last night. The air quality for us of course another big item to note. We will be anywhere from unhealthy for sensitive groups, north bay, central bay, west coast area to unhealthy for our east bay and the santa clara valley. Temperature wise we will drop numbers just a bit for today. And the cooling trend will continue for the next few days. Why some feel they are left behind as coronavirus tears to prisons. Two firefighters had a really close call friday night when they were fighting the woodward fire. They were trapped by flames on the ridge line until a Sonoma County Sheriffs Office team rescued them. You are looking at a tactical flight officer was attached to a long rescue line is the pilot held the helicopter steady. They lifted both firefighters to safety. He said he couldnt believe how closer firefighters were to the flames and he played down the risk at what he was doing to get them out of there. I think the real heroes of the firefighters literally out in the field. He did admit that was the closest hes ever been to flames during rescue. We almost died twice after not too long ago. Right now california inmates from prison are helping well fighters. But with the coronavirus pandemic their involvement has become limited and it is also comp located. It has brought about a new battle over whether those inmates should be released early or force to keep battling the flames. Reporter this year there arent many inmates on the lines and that will create challenges especially for the prisoners who are. Many have a feeling they are not getting the same consideration as those sitting in prison. As fires raged across california , resources are depleting. Including inmate firefighting teams. Cal fire says only half of its prison hand crews are available. They play a Critical Role in not only the extinguishment of our fires, but the work that they do when fires are not occurring throughout the state. Reporter inmates can volunteer if they are nearing the end of their sentence. And a low Security Risk they are getting the same training as professional firefighters. We want to change our lives. We want to come back into society and we want to give back. Reporter but last month as covid19 spread, a dozen camps were locked down under quarantine. An outbreak said Training Facilities causing more problems. Everyone is getting mixed in with everybody all of the place and nobody knows why. Reporter inmates say once they are employed physical distancing is impossible. These guys are there putting their life at risk. Reporter this mother is upset her son another inmate firefighters havent been let out. Governor newsom announced a plan to prevent the spread in july. 8000 nonviolent inmates are supposed to be released. They are either not following orders or they are doing it willynilly. Reporter the department of corrections has reduced the camp populations from 1990 firefighters in july to 1660 now. But it couldnt break down how many of those 330 inmates were natural releases versus expedited ones. They have an incentive to keep them there because they get paid for fulfilling this contract that they have to provide firefighters. Marianne accuses the of delaying the release instead letting highest level security inmates out including some convicted of violent crimes. The state responded laying out the guidelines and saying the department will identify inmates are eligible. It is kind of a brushing off like a mosquito is on your own. We will deal with it. Your people have to wait. Reporter direct nature sacrifice we have announced a positive program. And in light of the coronavirus pandemic most inmates receive 12 weeks off their sentence for good behavior. It upset fire camp inmates who say they deserve more credit for the job they do. The staff only not right what is happening. We almost died twice out there. Reporter inmate firefighters already get todays credit off their sentence for every day they are working. They are played up to five dollars a day and save the state tens of millions every year. Its amazing to see the Work Production that they can do and the pride in what they do. And the value they bring. Reporter but this year with a noticeable shortage, the governor announced the hiring of an extra 858 seasonal firefighters. A career many inmates say they want if they were out. There is a feeling that we have been left out. Their low risk and nonviolent. Turn around and rehire them as firemen. Thankfully we are not seeing a whole lot in the way of thunderstorms in the bay area at least. Here is a look at what is going on. It is a dark start by the Golden Gate Bridge we have some fog. Again just picking up on a few sprinkles. San francisco in the 60s, i guess we lost it on this graphic. 64 in oakland, 70 in livermore, and san jose at 66. Temperatures a tad cooler at sfo this morning. A few degrees warmer over the north bay. We are covered in clouds and added humidity. The wind is light at about 30 miles an hour. Even in our hills a bit of a breeze but not bad at all. Getting into the afternoon the isolated thunderstorms will still be a possibility with a red flag warning that goes until 5 00 for the entire bay area. You can see how that moisture is streaming to the north over areas of the sierra, the sacramento valley, and farther to the north. For us here at home, a few light scattered showers reported right over the east bayshore. Right over highway 24 a little bit of light activity for you there. And it moves over towards as we get to the north bay even more widespread. We have a little bit on the and into napa. Right by american canyon. Here is a look at what we can expect a 10 00 or so. The moisture continues to push northward into about 2 00. We have some partly cloudy skies along the coastline. Partly cloudy and mostly clear around the bay, or mostly sunny. We know this guys are not clear these days because of the smoke and haze. But as we get the sense that we do have just a little bit of lingering moisture out there. So it will be a humid day with a mix of sun and clouds. We will have that possibility of isolated thunderstorms but that could come with a dry lightning and the isolated gusts to 35 or 45 miles an hour. Which that is what we dont want to see. Afternoon highs on the other hand, not bad at all. 69 in San Francisco and 70s and 80s around the bay. In the north bay, 88. Temperatures will continue to call. We will still feel a little muggy for tomorrow before all this moisture moves out. But the marine layer will be in place. Temperatures will be right about average for this time of year. All that should be a good setup for our firefighters that continue to fight really hard to get control of those wildfires out there. We do warm it up a little bit on friday. Although cooling it down slightly into saturday and sunday. Make 60s at the coast and low 80s around the bay and low 90s expected in lint. Back to you.
