Putting that on hold for a week. We were just about to start it now on this friday to bring you, but were going put it on hold to bring you coverage of the california wildfire. We hope that you join us next friday when were planning to spend a full hour talking about how the coronavirus pandemic has changed the sports world. Thats recreation and how people are having fun, and how its affected our own personal fitness. Let me brick in mike here. We were trying to buy our older son a new Mountain Bike because his legs are a mile long. My husband got the alert that the bike was back in stock, and it was sold out before he would pay for it in the cart. I have been saying that we have been biking a lot over the last four months, and were not alone. I see them out there at the bike parks and is just rolling around the neighborhood. Look forward to that newscast. As of right now, we have an emergency situation going on in northern california. People have died and hundreds of homes destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of acres burning in just the week. Its so difficult to think that the resources are strapped the massive wildfires burning, and we will start in the north bay. They announced this morning that the lnu lightning complex fires grew 5,000 acres overnight. The fire is now at 342 square miles, but perhaps more significantly, containment went up from 0 to 7 . Ktvu is reporting live with the different communities that are still threatened by the fire as of right now. 480 clusters have burned and we have been burning since monday. These fires continue to merge and move. The wall bridge fire has now merged with stewarts fire. Its burning west of hills behr row at more than 21,000 ache overs. They hope to get the relief from the fog, and so many fires burning throughout the state, resources are stretched thin. Were no longer in the red flag warning. We did get the coastal influence last night, so the humidity that come up. We have a shift in the weather pattern, and we hope that it work in the favor. Theres no equipment out there. You have heard it for three days now. Theres no more equipment out there. People that are on the line have been on the line since it started. Firefighters have aggressively attacked the flames on the ground and by air. A boeing 747 supertanker dumped on the flames yesterday, but they had to be grounded after the smoke impacted the visibility and making it too dangerous to fly. Tens of thousands of residence remain under evacuation orders this morning. The governor knew some is expected to meet with First Responders at a presentation briefing to talk about this emergency and the type of help that he is trying to get to the state. The owner says that the home was spared from the fire along with the animals living on the property. The owner wrote, thank you to the firefighters from San Francisco and Orange County to help families and businesses like ours. A spare the air alert is stay nothing affect for the next couple of days because of the wildfires in the region t. Management district shows some resent breezes have some clearing in some parts of the bay area t. Air has not cleared enough to lift the alert. Lets go to rosemary thats talking about the weather. The smoke, i have a question to ask you. Does the smoke affect the temperatures at all, rose their . The smoke not so much. The temperatures are grog remain fairly consistent and very similar to what we had yesterday. Were going be in this pattern with a better on shore breeze. We have the temperatures ranging from 60s at the coast to 90s inland. Thats not fog to change a lot. Thats the direction of the wind thats having an impact on whether we see the smoke or not. Thats going continue for today. We do have a northwesterly type of flow. The winds shift over the course of, you know, every passing hour, and in to the afternoon pick up just a little bit. We do expect unhealthy for our sensitive groups in the north bay as well as San Francisco which central and south bay will remain unhealthy as well. If i show you the winds out there, you can see how the areas like middle peak is coming from the northwest. We know that we have a fire burning in here. That could push some of that smoke towards the areas of San Francisco and perhaps inside of the bay. We have selena, and thats on the edge there and some fires are burning in the napa county area and that could be pushing some smoke in the delta. Its depending on the time of the day and the way that the wind is blowing is sometimes the air is going improve and then worsen. This is a look at the cloud cover out there this morning. Along the coastline and inside of the bay and reporting visibility for a mile and a half. Thats an improvement there. Still some foggy conditions on the coastline. Likely to remain partly cloudy for the coast today. Its 59 degrees today and then mid 60s in the areas over napa. For the afternoon, gain a lot like yesterday. We have the 94 for santa rosa and 74 in San Francisco and 80 expected over oakland. Temperatures will not change much over the days. Were tracking that possibility and moisture coming our way from the Tropical Storm. Details on this and the extended forecast coming up. Rosemary, thank you. At the speed of which the flames are moving and talk about the challengings right now and things to come, were joined by the former coordinating officer and one time battalions chief in the bay area. Mark, glad to have you on board again. Good morning to you. Happy friday. People can argue that its not. Now, the lower Russian River and, look, be the commander right now and tell me today what your biggest concern is. Whats your call to action, and what do we need to do today . Well, for all of the times since this is started and youre right on. Its a disaster. No question about that because the limited resources of covid19, et cetera. What were seeing for the first time today is some positive news. Thats the weather. So what is happening although the containment is growing, its still low for these complex. Remember the complex is multiple fires up to 22 operated by the commander. What theyre able to do is move personnel and fires and hand crew from the one fire to the other. Thats good news, so those that are most dangerous in terms of the population and thats in the Santa Cruz Mountains are able to move the resources there theyre able to have the air operations on the north part of the fire. Those are the good news. The Incident Commander thats managing the mountain fire, it takes about 20 to 30 years to ascend to a level of commander. He said yesterday that he had never seen fire travel as fasts as it was in those fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains up to a thousand acres per hour. If you action trap late that, we should have had a 15,000acre, and we only had 2000, so the weather is cooperating and helping them. So let me ask you, mark. The governor a couple of months ago said that were prepared for this dual threat of covid19 firefighting season coming up. Would you say based oen that word that you never have seen that Fire Movement that fast. Theres nothing to prepare for this, or do you think that for the fire agencies, and we can only do what we can, but were we prepared for this, or could you not prepare for this . Well, its too fold. Cal fire did go out and try to hire people. We have the hand crew out of a Fire Department and thats very rare. 19 to 22yearolds. This is the first end of firefighter and that was this incident. You can imagine. Good news is that theres resources there. To your point, theres not a state in the United States that has enough Fire Suppression to handle 347 or 360 fires at one time. California is and emergencies and wildfires and thats throughout the country in the world and its just and determining. The lightning strikes and thats a call for nationwide and because you worked for fema and i want to ask you. We have crews coming from texas and nevada and again here, it takes four or five days. How much of that is going to help us. Yeah, no question. They have ordered 375 under what is known as the e mmsc. That allows states to request help from one another. They have 25 to 40 engines from new mexico, nevada, wyoming, et cetera. You heard the governor talk about reaching to australia for help. Theres support coming in. We know that the largest firefighter aircraft thats a 747 is flying over these fires. Ironically, colorado is going through similar, and they wanted that aircraft and thats based in colorado springs. We were able to get it here. We have the resources and still challenged. By all means, this is not over. This is not over and, its going to last for the rest of the month and in to september. Like you said, the weather is good today. Lets cross the fingers and hope for a great day. Thanks for joining us. Have a great weekend. You, too. Thank you. Okay. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9. Whats been the salvation armys response so far . Good morning. Well, its been going on for a little bit. We had units responding to support First Responders in the grass valley. We had a unit go up there as well and then napa. On tuesday evening we got a call to go up near winters and support 95 firefighters were working that side of the fire up there and thats part of the lnu fire. We supported that by 3 30 and got back at 10 00. On wednesday we were call today support the First Responders and the Emergency Services out at Mission Church on leisure town. Also, two or three red cross shelters at that point. Since then we have been feeding and hydrating and giving snacks and also providing some donations management support as well. Youre doing this and youre all masked up because were in the time of the covid19 pandemic. Has this complicated how they do the work . You know, we always have a High Standard with regard to the service. Just with covid19, we have actually had some opportunities in the county and also throughout the division here we have to have some test runs on meetings and support things, so for us, we have been masked the whole time with gloves, High Standards of cleaning and sanitizing and everything to make sure that were well above, and that the people that we serve are safe as well as the staff. Even though that it has complicated, i think the biggest thing for us is that we have to backtrack the time a little bit. A little bit more prep time to allow other groups to say were getting food from another local restaurant and things like that. Just a little bit more leave time to make sure that everything is in order and the communications, so that we can actually make sure that we deliver the best service possible. How are you doing on donations, supplies, money, where does that stand . Right now we dont need any kind of support at this time. Reason being is that we people are start going back now. Theyre starting to lift some of the areas, so that people can go back. It is a wait and see. Not just for our organization , but we have a great collaboration with the organizations here and the food banks and other nonprofits that we work with and the American Red Cross to see what the damage is when people go back to access what is happening and if theres a home and what the needs are, and so were working together on that. At that point, i think that we will start to see more needs starting to ramp up and not only the social services here as well as the needs that are going to be ramped up to the counties Emergency Operations people have been generous. People want to help, and this is a huge thing this is when things started to happen and theyre doing a ton of evacuations on wednesday evening. Its pretty insane here. I have to tell you that the Community Support and really the attitude amid the fire and disaster has been extraordinary. It brings tears to you when you think of so many people suffering, and so many kind a way to give the ways that they can. From the salvation army, thank you so much for joining us this morning. There was free burning activity again, and that challenged all of the lines and burned in several directions and the rescue efforts of the personnel on the line. One of the other big challenges for the cal fire overnight is getting everybody to and thats the resources against fighting the flames in order to rescue the three people that stayed behind and tried to protect their homes.
