Mornings on fox 2s Alyssa Harrington has been monitoring the story, she is here to tell us about the damage between healdsburg and burnsville, alyssa . Good morning, the communities along the Russian River our friend, many are under Evacuation Orders, fire officials are now concerned that the flames could move down the hill into the communities. One of the largest towns has been in direly evacuated. Ontario is under Evacuation Orders. I want to show you the video from overnight of the walbridge fire burning in sonoma county. We saw homes burning along Wallace Creek road near millcreek road in the healdsburg area. The complex fires started monday, and the incident was just a cluster of several fires that burned in five counties. 250,000 acres have burned, the largest fire and the bunch is the hennessey fire which is north of the lake. The fire was and can out of control at 192 acres. Firefighters hope to get relief from the coastal fog. We are no longer in a red flag warning. We got coastal influence last night, so humidity came up. We are hoping that now that we have had a shift in the weather pattern that it will work in our favor. Tens of thousands of people remain under evacuations in napa, sonoma and lake counties. The complex fires are among many burning throughout the state. Fire agencies say they are stretched thin. Additional engines are heading to california from out of state to help. Four people have died and the fires, and several others have been injured. Reporting live, Alyssa Harrington, mornings on fox 2. The fire damage at santa cruz counties keeps growing, from the august lightning complex fires. More damage than what we have seen in decades. New video from overnight, look at this. This is from Boulder Creek, homes engulfed in fires. We will go right now to the News Conference from cal fire, it is beginning now. Lets listen in. My name is deputy chief johnson, with the santa cruz unit. We will have time at the end for questions and answers, and we will do like we normally do, run through the lineup throughout the incident. If you need to report live or take phone calls, please go outside. With that, a quick update on the fire progression and activity overnight. The fire is 50,000 acres. We are still sitting at zero percent containment. We have 50 structures that we can confirm have been destroyed. That number will go up. We anticipate that to get into the triple digits as we go out there and verify what has been destroyed. We also have about 64,600 people who have been evacuated from the evacuation areas. 64,600. We now have over 1000 personnel, firefighting personnel at scene. With that, i will pass it over to the Operations Section chief who is running the operation on the ground out there. Incident Management Team from calfire team number three. Good morning, overnight we had experienced, once again, more significant fire behavior throughout the fire. We saw a little bit of a marine influence of moister air that came into the incident, earlier in the evening. It was shortlived. And, when it receded back, the fire conditions had increased significantly. It is much more on the western edge of the fire, but on the eastern edge of the fire, it stopped providing us the relief that we would traditionally see with a similar marine layer coming into the area. With that, we experienced once again more active fire on the eastern part of the fire. This impacted a number of communities everywhere from Boulder Creek to dan lowman, and further south. I am sorry to say that there was more structural damage in the fire. The fire conditions, lack of resources, we are doing the best we can. There were a number of fantastic saves by our First Responders, the Law Enforcement brothers and sisters are assisting us and being successful in that endeavor. One of the things that continues to hamper us is that we have evacuations in place for a very good reason, not only for Public Safety and the safety of First Responders, but, with that, when people do stay behind, and they try to take matters into their own hands with suppressing fires, it creates a bigger issue for the First Responders. Those that stay, last night we had three separate rescues that polled very few resources away to have to rescue individuals, they put themselves in peril. They are not firefighters. They are trying to do the right thing for property and neighbors. It is a bigger problem for the First Responders. It took the firefighters away from the firefight to rescue them. It put First Responders and firefighters into some danger, to rescue them out of that situation. We ask you, if you have evacuated, if you have been evacuated, please evacuate. Do not put First Responders into that situation. Thank you. Speaking next, from the Sheriffs Office, chief deputy clark. I want to touch on what we did in terms of our progress a, and a couple of other things for people that are displaced with regards to a bit of a timeframe, because people are wondering, as well as patsy, or animals, what is going on . Starting with last night, we continue through the evacuation, the city of Scotts Valley. Again, i mentioned yesterday that the population of the area is about 12,000 people. We are nearly done with that this morning. Again, the area is everything west of highway 17. We are nearly done with that. We used 76 people to do that last night. Once we got done with that, for us, it is transitioning to a certain extent, to where all of our folks are going to be dedicated to security, so long as the fire does not change and we have to somehow move into a different area for a future for potential evacuations. Later today, as soon as the evacuations are completed and Scotts Valley, we will move 93 people, spread out, 93 officers and deputies spread out throughout the valley, through Scotts Valley in order to do roving patrols and that sort of thing and make sure that peoples homes are safe and we are keeping an eye on anyone who would decide that they want to come up here for the wrong reasons. I am just going to reiterate what the chief said. Theres no reason to come back into an evacuated area. If cal fire is doing the best they can, to stop the fire, but coming back into the evacuation zone, like you heard it draws them away from their job and draws us away from potentially looking for people and evacuating people, that we would need to. Last night, we got a couple calls with regards to suspicious vehicles. Again, we have people that are up there looking for those folks and looking for anyone else that might be driving around and looking to burglarize a home. In terms of timeframe, i want to bring this out. I can imagine that if you are displaced by the fire, you are maybe wondering how long will i be away from my home . I dont want to give also, because, it is a dynamic situation, the fire is not contained. What would i tell my loved one . It could be potentially weeks, depending on what the fire does. I throw that out there, in the sense that if people are wondering how soon can i get it back, it could be weeks. That is all dependent on what the fire does. The last thing that i want to touch on real quick is your animals. Maybe someone wants to come back into an evacuation zone because maybe they forgot a paddler or maybe there is Something Like that. I have to go back, i have to go back. Animal controls phone number. What we can do is potentially assist animal control in going up ban doing a rescue on a pad. Id like to give you that number. 8314711182. That is with regards to animals. Thank you. As far as bringing into counties, speaking from the San Mateo CountySheriffs Office is detective mike switch. For San Mateo County, overnight, we had Law Enforcement officers going door todoor, making announcements of evacuations. Thank you to the north mutual aid partners who assisted with that. As a recap, the evacuation zone is every town that is west of 35, all the way up to highway one. We saw a lot of cars leading last night, and, we appreciate the people who did that. We just want to make sure that we have personnel are able to direct resources accordingly and save properties as much as possible. We were singing a lot of cars coming in, and we are asking everyone to avoid coming into these coastal towns and using the route so that we can leave them open for those who are trying to get out and the First Responders. The Half Moon Bay high School Evacuation point is full. Where asking everybody, especially people with rvs, trailers or large animals to go to the san mateo event center. We also have spot fires throughout this entire region, in south county, and fires on both sides of highway one. We also want to let everyone know that our hearts are with everyone who has been impacted by this. We understand what you are going through. These are our neighbors and our friends and our families. We are with you on the mission area we want to let you know that we are doing everything we can to protect our communities. Thank you. Next up is a unified incident commander, for the incident itself. Incident Management Team three, billy c. Good morning, obviously, we reported out at 48,000 acres. 64,000 residents have been evacuated. Obviously, last night, i had talked about the fire growing 700 acres to 1000 acres an hour. Overnight, the humidity that we did receive, it tempered the fire a bit, but dont let that fool you into a sense that something is changing on this incident. Once the marine layer pulled out, there is free burning which challenged all of our minds out there and burned a different direction, and hampered control efforts and evacuation efforts and rescue efforts with personnel on the line. Again, today, all of those person i will be actively engaged on the line. We will increase personnel by 100 since last night. It is still not enough. We are going to continue to bring additional personnel and resources in here and we will continue to engage in this firefight. We will be taking the little wincing, and hope they dont go into a big one. Thank you. Our final speaker for the san mateo cruise area cal fire unit. Good morning. As it has been said, this is a dynamic situation that we are dealing with in san mateo and santa cruz counties. I reiterated last night that to this is a historic event, we have fire burning in areas that may have never burned before at all. As the fire continues to grow, as we get resources into contain the fire, we need to make sure that those who are evacuated he the evacuation notices, leave the area if you have not, as it is stated. To take the vital resources that we have, which are very limited and commit to those to rescue those who stay and try to assist the communities. We have firefighters out there doing perimeter control, being taken away from that effort, in order to affect those rescues and make sure that everyone is safe and has left the area. I cant stress it enough. Everyone needs to leave the area and stay out of the area, and let us get in there and do our jobs. We are doing everything we can. We have committed every available resource that is available to us from our fire agency and the calfire agency as well. We basically have put everything we have on the front line in order to contain this fire. Has resources come in, we will be assigning these as the team sees fit to the areas that have the greatest impact and need. Please, leave the area, he the evacuation notice, if youre anywhere in the area were in front of the fire, and has not received an evacuation notice and, take this as an upfront note, prepare your self and be ready so that in the event that we have to evacuate you you are ready to go. Thank you. With that, we can answer questions about the incident. How do you decide with structure to defend . We had a live update from calfire, the situation with the wildfires. I will recap it briefly for you. Calfire says that 50,000 acres have burned , 60,000 people have evacuated it, the fire is zero percent contained. It is still out of control. It happened with 1000 firefighters on the fire lines, they got moist air for a little while last night, it helped but it is not enough. The eastern part of the fire is still a big concern. There is still a lack of resources for them, and that is a major concern. Another big problem is that there are people that will not leave when they are told to evacuate. Last night they had to rescue three people which had pulled them away from a firefight, so this morning they are saying if you have been told to leave, leave and do not try to get back in. A couple of other quick points later today, and Santa Cruz County, they have evacuated 12,000 people in the Scotts Valley area. They want to send and 93 people to secure homes and property in order to make sure that they are taken care of. One final point, they are saying that there are people who have been evacuated you want to know when can we go back home . And theyre saying it could be weeks before the evacuees can go back home, this is not contained. That is the very latest from calfire. We will be watching their report throughout the day for you and bring you more information as quickly as possible here on mornings on fox 2. Park officials at big basin at redwood state park in the Santa Cruz Mountains say they will spend the next few days here assessing the damage from a wildfire that tore through the park.
