Today we are getting a closer look at the devastation from the north bay fires in northwest vacaville. It charted many homes in its path. The fire chief tells us he has never seen a fire that hit as hard and as fast. Today they have crews going up to a few addresses in the remote areas of the canyons just to make sure everyone got out all right and to tally the damage. The air quality manage has issued an alert until sunday. From the shots the smoke has filled the air. These are shots taken from various parts of the bay area. Some his youre than others. People are encouraged to stay indoors with windows and doors shut. Until the smoke is not quite as heavy. Meteorologist mark tamayo tracking the unhealthy air. And more, what do we see in terms of any improvements from today compared to yesterday . There have been some improvements in terms of temperature mainly in the way of moisture but we are seeing temperatures down a good 5 to 10, even 15 degrees cooler compared yesterday. But unfortunately, these fires are so big, they are kind of overwriting the change in weather conditions. That is what we have been noticing over the next day or so. But one of the cooler days of the week is today. As we look at our topper pictures showing the wood would fire and a lot of activity. This is closer to the coastline, they have an increase in the moisture levels. So that is been a nice development. That is mainly in the lower elevations. It is still very dry. So the fog is not having that much of an impact. All the fires if we take a look at the maps right now up and down the state it looks like the main focus is in the bay area. I will show you some of the smoke from throughout the day today. You can see the smoke moving from north to south as we check out some of the current conditions. Right now we do have the lnu complex fire. It was 82 degrees in atlas peak to 98 in Hidden Valley lake. Find fairfield 98 degrees. So it is cooler today but it is still warm to hot. And the walbridge fire temperatures in the upper 80s and it is still very dry. The myers fire as variable conditions from the mid70s to mid 80s. And the woodward fire, temperatures here a nice bump in the relative humidity and that is actually nice development. But of course watching the palo alto for palo alto for all of this is having a huge impact on air quality. We will have more that coming up just a few meds. A pg e worker died in Solano County during the wildfires. He was actually helping to clear parables and lines for emergency responders. Apg employee was located in the gates canyon area unresponsive. Cpr was performed on him. The employee was transferred by ambulance a pronounced deceased at a local hospital. Officials have not yet said how the worker died. Back now to the north bay. The lnu complex fires have ravaged communities and destroyed 130,000 acres and also burned several done homes. Topic are joining us now with the latest on this fire. Tom. We drove all the way across sonoma county, napa county, Solano County seen mile after mile of damage. Mostly in remote places. Which is the good news. But the bad news is there is so much more up there that is left to burn to any kind of big wind event or anything like that could cause real problems. So this is not over. And the complications may still lie ahead. The napa lake unit fire exploded last night despite 600 firefighters working. A lot of acres of property were consumed by the flames. Along the remote areas of highways one 2101 28, the damage was severe. But homes and other structures with good Defensible Space avoided serious damage. My last report this morning the fire complex band over five counties and was 131,000 acres. But its also been growing all day long. We do have over 30,000 structures that are threatened. We do have 105 confirmed structures destroyed. And 70 confirmed structures that are damaged within the entire complex. Reporter so far, one death. That of a pg e employee who perished helping other First Responders and for civilian injuries. But as this map shows, individual fires within the massive fire complexes extending far to the north or joining together. Some of that is allowed to burn out on its own. The bottom side of this fire on the top side of this fire will combine. And the blue ridge will be all interior and the blue ridge is going to burn again. Reporter while firefighters are on the way, mutual weight for most Law Enforcement agencies early on site with more coming. Our Police Responses there to assist with evacuations. This is a live look outside from our roof camera pointing west towards san francisco. Clearly a lot of smoke in the air coming from all of the wildfires burning around the bay area. Mark tamayo joins us now and a lot of cities are not even in the direct path of the fire zone, mark, but here we are as soon as you go outside you can definitely smell that smoke. Thats right christina. With so much fire activity, multiple fires and extreme behavior producing all of that smoke and it is just going up into the sky essentially being trapped. It is kind of a lid over us and not mixing to clear out that smoke. As a result we seem to talk about this every year with the smoking out for couple of days. Through the weekend. We have that Severe Weather alert in place through sunday i think that will be extended as well. We have live chopper pics as you can see up above the woodward fire. And the Point Reyes National seashore. And only some changes today right near the immediate coastline a little bit more of a push. This theoretically should help wire cruise. But i will say there is so much fire activity and it was so hot and so dry leading up to this lightning event a few days ago, these fires are taking off. Just kind of overwriting the other weather conditions. But in terms of whether today most areas in general about 5 to 10 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. And a little bit more of a marine push. We will continue to keep an eye on this fire and all the fires coming up. We are also talking about air quality once again as we take a look at our life camera looking out above severances go. We talked about that lid here, it is tracing it for you. The lid trapping the smoke in the lower levels of the atmosphere. So as a result there is not much mixing. And that smoke really settles and probably while you are sleeping you will notice that we wake up first thing tomorrow morning. In terms of air quality, some areas not so bad right now. But i will say these are hourly reports. They can change every hour. A bunch of rents out here towards vacaville. So that is up on the air quality scale years. We get moderate air quality closer to san francisco, oakland, and some red for livermore. So that is showing up on air quality scale. And then down the south bay is moderate. On harold air quality for a good portion of the bay area as we headed to your friday. In terms of fire conditions you can see there is a marine push tomorrow morning. But still these are some rounding sites surrounding some of the fires. And it is still a warm to hot day. Especially in the north. Temperatures will reach the low to mid 90s. Coming up will have more on the bay area forecast and it will be a little bit warmer as we head towards the weekend. More on that coming up in a little bit. Many people have been warned that they need to be ready to leave. At a moments notice if those Evacuation Orders to come in. For more on why we are seeing these extreme weather conditions leading to so many large fires all of the same time, we are joined now by dr. Nora dieffenbach a professor of earth system science at stanford university. Professor, so good to have you on here today to get some context and what we are seeing play out here in Northern California. Over the weekend we had a very unusual lightning storm. Then the intense heat wave. And now we have dozens of large fires burning all at the same time. What role do you believe Climate Change is playing here . The proximal cause of these wildfires is the lightning. And this is a very unusual thunderstorm. We dont have evidence that global warning influenced the thunderstorm. But what we do have evidence for is the Global Warming has increased what scientists call or the dryness. The amount of dry on the landscape. That was followed by a very intense heat wave. We have very strong elements that Global Warming is increasing. With the probability and severity of severe heat. So think of this in a baseball analogy. This is like a three run home run in Global Warming did not cause the lightning but it put runners on base. Your Research Finds that we can expect more of this. More of these severe heat waves. More prolonged periods of drought here in california and of course from the world as well. Because of rising temperatures. How much more likely are we to see this kind of extreme weather in the near future you think . My colleagues and i actually had a study published today about autumn wildfire conditions in california. And what we find is that Global Warming is likely to intensify the occurrence of extreme wildfire weather conditions in california. And in particular the simultaneous occurrence of these extreme conditions that is what we are experiencing right now as long as Southern California and Northern California simultaneously. Thats what we can expect to intensify and this is driven primarily for the effect of warming. We know the warming of california and the western United States has dried out fuels. Those Drought Conditions have been identified. The high heat sucks moisture and draws moisture out of soils and out of plants and we have very strong evidence the area burned in the western United States is are increasing because of global warning. You can expect that to intensify in the future. So we are already experiencing obviously the expects of Climate Change. But what happens if we take steps to try to limit the increase in Global Temperatures . Are we going to be able to slow things down at all . So our study out today addresses that as well. We compare two different scenarios of future Global Warming. One with essentially continuing along the Greenhouse Gas emission trajectory that we have been on and another with curving Greenhouse Gas emissions like the targets in the United Nations paris agreement. And the tough news is that we are likely to see increasing intensification of wildfire conditions regardless. But the good news is that you have a chance to manage those risks. Lowering the trajectory of future Greenhouse Gas emissions. We do have confidence that that will curb the intensification of wildfire weather conditions in california. And we also have opportunities to man our risks in terms of resilience and systems that help to alert communities and hardening of homes in the electrical grid. Management of vegetation. These are all ways in which we can help to manage the risk of severe wildfire here in california in the western United States. There are steps that we can take. The really important discussion and i really appreciate you coming on here to give us some context for what we are seeing unfold. California right now. Professor of earth system science at stanford university. I really appreciate your time. Thank you for joining us. My pressure, thank you. For magnetic run of it cases are showing an upward trend after falling in late july and early august. The state reported nearly 6000 new cases yesterday. Also, separate cisco only has 70 of its intensive care unit beds available compared to the state threshold of 20. We have to recognize there will be a lot of transitions and imperfections. But we also have to aspire to greatness. Reporter while a new study finds a symptomatic children could be more contagious than severely ill adults. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital studied 192 children suspected of either having covid19 or being exposed to somebody who did. Nearly 50 of those children tested positive and displayed higher levels of the virus in their airways than adults in intensive care units. Federal investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash. A wildfire burning at Point Reyes National seashore is expanding this afternoon. The woodward fire is four miles north of near limit or beach. It is burning in a rugged remote area. The fire has grown to about 1500 acres triggering evacuation warnings for people in western marin. Fire Officials Say the aerial attack on this fire has been limited due to competition with all the other fires burning on the state. The aircraft and other things have been prioritized to fires where they have an immediate life threat. And a structural loss. So that is part of the reason you are not seeing aircraft flying this fire. Because we are holding right now in a pretty good position. We do have resources threatened. Those being natural resources. But not necessarily Critical Resources that are related to structures being lost. More peoples lives being wrist. There are 1600 buildings threatened by this fire but none of them have been damaged or destroyed as of yet. We want to show you an image here. I believe we have this. This is incredible. Nasa put out this image that was taken by the terra satellite. You can see smoke covering much of central and Northern California. The smoke in the air has of course contributed to the hazy skies we are seeing around the bay area today. A spare the air alert is in effect today and then all the way through sunday. We want to check back in now with meteorologist mark tamayo. And mark, weve always stuck with the hazy skies for little while but i think the good news is the firefighters are getting a bit of a break. Some of those real hot temperatures are kind of dialing back a bit. It will be great to interview one of the firefighters to see what their experience out there. Because it is so warm to hot just not as hot as yesterday. So at least that is a welcome development. But in terms of a real significant change to help the fire crews in a dramatic way it is not showing up at all. In fact tomorrow could be a little bit warmer across the fire zones and a good portion of the bay area. But today though no more excessive heat warnings. We will show you the temperature change compared yesterday and everybody has a down arrow from 98 to 91 so far. Instead of triple digits we are down to the 90s in san jose from 91 to 84 degrees this afternoon so far. We will take a look at the current numbers out there. San francisco 67 degrees. Some 80s down toward san jose and sunnyvale. You can see livermore the upper 80s. So there is the temperature change. Everybody has a big 9 in front of those values. Especially inland. The is the change we have been hoping for. As you back the maps we will show you this, there are a bunch of hayes and the smoke over the bay area. We do have some fog trying to regroup new portions of the coastline. It looks like it is heading towards Santa Cruz County. So hopefully that can help the fires. But still it is a pretty shallow marine level. So once you go above the marine land it is pretty warm and dry air mass. We are talking up above 2500 or above 3000 feet. We will come in closer right now and show you the wind speeds. There is a bit of a breeze out there with the winds around 10 to 30 miles an hour. So more reports and for you. In fact that is a stronger when out towards fifo. No fog in this picture. This is all the smoke that is kind of a drifting overhead. A spare the air alert in place for tomorrow and right on through the weekend. The air quality reaching on heavy levels partly cloudy and smoky first thing tomorrow morning temperatures in the 60s to write about 60 degrees. It increases the onshore flow. This area of High Pressure wants to rebuild a little bit for your friday and as a result those neighborhoods will be a little bit warmer. There is that portion of the coast near the bay 1st thing tomorrow morning. The clouds were clear back to the shoreline and temperatures in the upper 60s to the upper 90s for afternoon highs. So it is not a dramatic cooldown for today. In fact tomorrow will be warmer in a few spots, hotspots we showed you in the mid to upper 90s. Into the weekend not too much is changed. The lets keep an eye on a few extra clouds associated with the tropical system that unfortunately may trigger, at least the chance for some thunderstorms in the latter half of sunday and monday.
