Any time i see this i instantly want to go there. I do not care if it is a four hour drive. Take me there but, these days, i am not sure if i should go or not. But i love looking at pictures of it and i am sure a lot of people do. Talk about work because now more than ever mothers are being forced to decide between working or taking care of their children. According to the chronicle, mothers with Young Children has scaled back her work hours more than fathers between march and april. In a survey by benefits company ceo cleo in june, a parent in one of three families chose to leave the work was or drop down to parttime in 70 of the cases. It was the mother and im here to say i will completely admit that my wife completely does more work that i do. I am trying to get better but if we were to rank the parents, my wife would be parent one and i would be the backup parent. I appreciate you saying that. I was doing an interview the other day how is Distance Learning working . And he said, my wife is the hero. And i said, how lucky are you. I did not ask if she dropped out of her work to be the hero at home but women have been hit harder than men from the beginning of the pandemic. More women lost jobs and more women chose to leave the workforce throughout the pandemic. And more women are taking on additional childcare responsibilities. Nationwide, women make about . 82 on every dollar a man makes and a lot of women are looking at this, not just right now but what about longterm. Because so many people have worked for decades to get to where they are now and they are wondering, when this is all over, where does that leave me as a woman in the workplace . And where does it women and ame king about this and someone has to make the choice between child and work. So many of us having to do Distance Learning again. But so many different states varying and different institutions are burying on whether they should go back to class. That is the debate and that is what we are living here in the bay area. Its very sad. Im lucky that in my house, my wife is allowed to work from home so she can balance the morning education and i come in in the later afternoon. Its tough. I have many stories but i will not go on. Grandparents are helping out now and people are thinking about hiring tutors if they can afford it. And leaning on other family members. So many moms have to decide if they want to work. If they do continue to work they need to get help educating their children. Right now we will start with this heat wave. The Emergency Declaration was canceled and there were no rolling blackouts but with another day of hot temperatures, triple digits in some areas, it does not mean we could not have blackouts moving forward. Reporter i am checking out the updated numbers right now and as of 9 00 this morning, the forecasted pick up energy for the day is about 50,000 megawatts. That is slightly below the available capacity of about 51,000 megawatts. If it stays that way, that is good news but if it changes we could see the rolling allergist today. When demand outpaces supply, that is when the independent system operator directs pg e and other utilities to power. That will take pressure off the electric grid. People are being ordered to prepare for rolling Power Outages as early as 4 00 p. M. Yesterday but it did not happen its going to be a very very difficult 24 to 48 hours. The areas that are burning in the area are no stranger to wildfires. In years past we have seen fire started in hot, dry, windy conditions. This weather pattern is completely different. How does that affect the firefight . Completely to your point. Absolutely. What we saw yesterday had not happened for 50 years. That was the number of Lightning Strikes. Really, that is what this is all about. The Lightning Strikes up and down the state both in Southern California and 94 fires within one day. There were 21 fires in one hour in the ranger unit in Northern California which is the same county where the paradise fire was. We are right back into those areas as well as the areas in the bay area you are talking about. I know we have seen a number of stunning pictures of Lightning Strikes, fires that started as a result. I would like to pull it a picture that shows a Lightning Strike unlike any i have seen before in the east bay. Lets talk about what is happening in this picture. Isnt that incredible . That was taken by some of the folks on the firelight in livermore yesterday. You can see the Lightning Strikes hitting the ground. Your running across there. That gives you a good idea of how beautiful nature is but also how devastating it can be. Its a wonderful picture that they captured there. It really does. At such an ominous view but you have to understand there are people being told to stay inside their homes. They are sweltering. Some may not have power. Just the process of evacuations, we have seen it being clunky but what is happening with that kind of notification now . They are Getting Better at it. Got Alert Systems and cameras throughout the state that we did not have before so we can get Early Warning going. People are more in tune to knowing how to get advice and counsel and the counties and Emergency Management departments are better at getting that notice out there but, to your point, if pg e starts to shut off power, that compounds it. It might not be in the area where the fire started but that could hamper Domestic Water supply, the ability to notify people because the radio or television are out, and a power shutoff, although the good news is yesterday california concert enough to not have them, there is worry over the next three days we at experience that and that can compound the firefighting efforts. It makes it one more challenge on top of covid19. So, lets talk about the pandemic. I cannot believe it is might question to you but how is covid19 affecting the firefight. Usually you see fires in and firefighters and i cannot imagine that front page of what call it incident action plan are the management objectives. Number one and all of those at the top of the page is to utilize covid19 guidelines. What that means is six foot spacing, you have to space out, but all of that presents challenges when you are trying to be safe, make sure you get an and look out and they can operate in that manner but when it becomes critical in terms of safety, there are some challenges. We also know is the hand in state of california are down to 70 and that is a critical component on the initial attack of the fire. Its a crew that gets in there with axes and pics and they are clearing it. Their very effective and cal fire wants to use that but weve got less of it because of covid19 and many of these crews were in may crews. They were low offenders so they were released out of different jails and prisons so that has reduced the number of hand crews available and makes it more challenging to be able to get in and attack the spires early. It is an overused word but i have to use it, it is an unprecedented situation. Thank you for joining us this morning. Coming up next, President Trump planning to issue a historic pardon in minutes how it tied to the 100th anniversary of giving women the right to vote but first, california among the state leading the way in both by mail. Reporter 77 days remain until the 2020 election. This week, democrats are making their strongest case yet for the harris ticket. If you think things cannot get worse, trust me, they can. And they will if we do not make a change in the selection. On the first night of the Democratic National convention, former First Lady Michelle Obama wants a direct attack on President Trump and she was not alone. My dad was a healthy, 65 yearold. His only preexisting condition was trusting donald trump. And for that, he paid with his life. If donald trump is re elected, all the progress we have made will be in jeopardy. Reporter democrats also used the Virtual Convention to address issues concerning americans including the pandemic, the economy, and racial injustice. With election day less than three months away there is some concern about a large transition to vote by mail in many states it did not already have it. California has been offering it for a long time but now every registered voter will receive a ballot in the mail for the november general election. The chief elections officer and secretary of state joins us this morning. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. Good morning. 77 days until election day. People will be finding balance in their mailboxes. In the speech last night from Michelle Obama, the latter half was all about voting. Get out and vote. Im curious, give me the latest numbers in california when it comes to registered voters. At last check, we were at about 20. 9 million voters on the rolls in the state of california and growing by the day. From 2016 we hit a record highi primary had a record high and turnout seems to be building as well. We are preparing for a strong turnout but despite the pandemic, the first step is to get a ballot in the hands of every active registered voter in california in advance of the november election. That will be the safest and most convenient way to vote. We will have in person opportunities but vote by mail, vote by mail, vote by mail. Across the country, is the selection going to be safe, that is the question. I read your oped and you talked about the integrity. That is what it is about. The integrity of the vote by mail system. Can they be forged . Is the system safe moving forward when we have so many people . And what do you say to that . Vote by mail is nothing new in california. States across the country have utilized vote by mail and it has been proven successful and secure. The safest option during the pandemic but its a shame access to the voting is still at risk. It is a shame that a certain, you know who, and attack the integrity of vote by mail. There is several measures we are taking. Including signatures when someone votes. Put your envelope in the mail and make sure you sign the back of it so your signature can be compared with your signature on file. Another important reminder for all voters, the return ballot must be postmarked on or before election day in order to count. So dont put it off until the last day. When you get your ballot, fill it out sooner rather than later and get it back in. You can track your ballot also. If i put it in the mail i can follow up and say did you receive it . Absolutely. There is a new tool called where is my ballot, it is a tracking tool for voters. Kind of like tracking your u. P. S. Package when youre shopping online. Go to the website and what option is where is my ballot. You can get text message alerts, email alerts or phone alerts on the status of your ballot. Imagine the peace of mind when you get the message that your ballot was received and counted. Its great for transparency and great for accountability. Great for peace of mind and another tip we are suggesting is to verify the registration status. Go to you can check your Voter Registration record and make sure your information up to date and current so when they start mailing the ballots out, they are sending you your ballot at the right address. There has been a lot of talk in washington regarding the Postal Service and what is going on with them. Have you had any direct conversations with the United States Postal Service and have they given you any of it is . Have they given you confidence that they are prepared to handle what most likely will be a huge influx of mailin ballots . Thats a great question. I think it is on the minds of everybody. We have had not we have not had direct conversations with the new postmaster general who is testifying on monday but we have a great working relationship with the Postal Service representatives at the regional and local level. We have been working together on it for many, many years. Constantly troubleshooting and making sure the ballots get to the voter on a timely basis and back to the county on a timely basis. And to be on the safe side, counties will mail out bodies ballots five weeks before the election and going even if there are delays or our time to receive the ballot and send it back. The postmark for return ballot has to be on or before election day. It can arrive three days after the election and still be counted. Were extending the deadline for this november by a couple weeks just in case. We have to leave it there. Thank you very much for your time. Have a great rest of the week. Governor newsom demanding an investigation into the rolling Power Outages. Let me make this crystal clear, we failed to predict and plan the shortages and that is simply unacceptable. The governor wondered why three separate agencies seem to be caught off guard and failed to handle the Energy Capacity to says the service tions are just unacceptable especially during the pandemic and people the agency that oversees the power grid says there are several reasons rolling blackouts have been necessary and could require more plant outages. In washington, as students have back to school many parents are struggling to help with Distance Learning. We have decided to help parents find resources outside of the Virtual Classroom with what we call a School Survival guide. We are joined by the Community Program administrator at the san jose Public Library. Let me say right off the back, you are a rock star for what you do. We know libraries were critical prepandemic and they are critical now. Why are you in this line of work . I am a longtime teacher and educator and supporter of our students. The library is a Perfect Place to join after a career as a teacher. Libraries support our students and teachers and families with resources and books at literacy skills. Thank you again for joining us. So, as we move forward, as students and parents go through this Distance Learning, talked about what you guys are doing for folks who need extra resources. So, we made a pamphlet in march when our Library Close and we have two initiatives. One is providing hot spot to students across the city without internet access. They can access their Virtual Learning experiences or on demand and live classes. With our partnership with at t we can close that divide and help a lot of families and students access the internet. And, second, we have a lot of virtual programs. We have a Youtube Channel with on demand libraries. It is robust and has tons of story times and you can find story times and classes in english and spanish and vietnamese and chinese. There is a ton of engaging videos for families to access at any time. We also have a huge library that is available with Virtual Class visits, math clubs, abc show and tell. We are launching a new Homework Club this fall, on august 31st, and students can drop in and get homework help from librarians and our volunteers. I know we are focusing on students right now but you mentioned the initiative. Is that primarily for students or can people, every day residents of san jose, in and use that program . We focus on our students for. Last week and this week, 8000 hot spots were deployed citywide and we have reserved a handful of hot spots for residents and those will be available this fall. We will post that on our social media when its available for residents to pick up. You gave us a little bit of your resume and you worked in education for a long time. When it comes to the future of education, in your discussions with other teachers and principals and schools, do you feel like the future of schooling after this pandemic will change a little bit . Whether its grade school or high school . Absolutely. We are in a pretty big shift and i think the pandemic has accelerated a lot of needed focus on education and more specifically learning. Students are capable and competent and for them to be agents of their own opportunity and take learning into their own homes and hands is important. The library plays a huge role in that. Giving them access to hot spots, to books, to resources to programs, to a whole world of learning. So, schools will naturally take a shift in this pandemic. For the better. Libraries are here to support that. Again, as i mentioned, you are doing a great job and everyone at the Public Library in san jose. Thank you for what you do.
