Pg e explained in a tweet saying there was strain on the power grid due to excess heat. Pg e began rotating Power Outages at the direction of the state grid operator. 200 to 250,000 customers were affected for about an hour each. This map is from pg es web shot. It shows a snapshot of the situation at 8 00 tonight. The red dots represent outages of 5000 or more, the orange dots are 500 or more pg e customers. Although there will be no more rotating outages tonight pg e isnt ruling out the possibility for the weekend. Thats why its asking customers to conserve energy. We also encourage customers if they are able to delay in the later in the evening household chores like running their washing machine or their dishwasher, or even vacuuming. Just by avoiding those types of things, it will help us have the necessary supply to meet the demand. Pg e says most customers have their power back tonight, but it could be another hour before power is fully restored to everyone who is affected definitely not easy for many people. California has experienced rolling blackouts here before, particularly during the electricity crisis of 2001. We cover those blackouts extensively and your power even when out tonight. Reporter there promising an initial advisory to the public. Initially it was issued a half hour after they started shoving power off. They said they would do that in our increments. This does not square with reality, based on all of the things that were done after that power crisis to make it more robust and all of that stuff. There is going to be a lot of explaining to do, not just on the part of the grid and pg e, but also on the part of the California Public utilities commission, which has been up to its neck in coziness with pg e for decades. You touched on this a moment ago after the power crisis. They looked at different ways of supplying power, such as solar, to the state of california. If you have this, you didnt meet the threshold you were mentioning before and you have all of these other ways of generating power, such as solar. How do you think this could happen . Or how will pg e explain this . What they are saying is everybody was hot in the southwest and everybody was buying power and looking for extra power and all of that. Some of that may very well be true, but this was supposed to be a more robust system and power can be available from many, many states away. The question is going to be, why were they not prepared to have that kind of stuff done . It just seems to be, at 47,000 megawatts, not nearly enough power in order to cause this kind of a problem, when they have easily handled over 50,000 in previous years. The initial call came in as a report of a possible collision. Reporter chp officer ross lee says officers from the body of a woman who had apparently been ejected. They found three cars abandoned on the highway. The vechten herself abandoned, left to die on the road. I didnt receive any information that it appeared that anyone tried to render any type of aid. Reporter the cars had one thing in common. At least two, possibly the third or stolen vehicles. This is a very unusual incident to have three vehicles abandoned at a collision scene. Chp is working on the likelihood the woman had been inside the white honda civic that flipped over on the highway. That vehicle had liver damage.
