I believe that theyre not the only ones doing this at this time. How is it going for the learning that youre doing so far . Good morning. Its a pleasure to be here this morning. I have to say that were really proud of the staff, our families and students because day one was yesterday, and we feel that overall it went well. Obviously there were some glitches, but were really happy that the first day is behind us, and were working to address any concerns from yesterday and everyday looking how do we make it better for everybody. Are you worry that had there are some people that do not have the devices at home will be left out . Thats a concern for everybody in the organization and in the city and our county. One of the things that we have done is provided devices over close to 20,000 devices for all of the students that need them as well as 5,000 hot spots. Were working on that, but its a concern for us. Now, i know that hopefully, you know, everybody hopes that it will get back to inperson learning at some point. Is there a plan on what inperson learning is going to look like . What does it look like . Well, inperson learning is the ideal scenario. The Teachers Want to see the students and the students want to be back and the families want back in school. Its calls for instruction just like normal and the use of cameras for any students that want them to be at home for a variety of reasons. We have purchased the Necessary Technology to be able to deliver that type of model and monitor the data and working with the Public Health to determine when it might be safe to return to inperson instruction. What have you learned over this period and doing things in a different way. Are there things that youre taking away from it, and things that you will do for ever in this way or future. Perhaps you learn that had this works online better than in person . I think theres a lot of lessons learned. I think one of the big learnings is that the systems and the size of ours needs to develop to be able to respond quickly to needs like the ones before us. Thinking about how do we imbed the reflection to insure that we can capture the data live and respond in a timely fashion is a big learning. Not just here, but i think in just district ask cross the state and country. The other piece is how do we continue to refine our skills to stay at the forefront of the technology and delivering some e interest that student there are some pieces that have made us pivot to having meetings in a more efficient fashion. Our planning that allows us to move forward. Nancy, one more question. Do you think its harder for younger students to do distant learning or is it harder for older students who might have more complicated classes to do it . Looks like we lost nancy, the superintendent of the school district. There were some good questions and answers there. We will follow up with this story as the year wears on. Mike. There you go, sam. From the south bay we go to east bay. Teachers will vet very soon on a tentative agreement on how distant learning will work this year moving forward. Now, online instruction for the district began on monday, but it was not until yesterday that the district announced a deal with the teachers union. So far no specifics have been announced. Both sides have been talking the details and everything from the amount of time being spent online to the number of hours teachers will beking. Well, the ceo of uber and lyft are threatening to shut down the operations throughout the state of california. The company is making the announcement after a judge ordered them to comply with a new state law. Were joined live here with a big story. Well, that state law went in to affect earlier this year. On monday a judge here in california ordered the ceos of uber and lyft to start with the law. That mean that is they have to start with the drivers as employees instead of in at the den pent contractors. Now, doing that gives them the benefits that they do not have now like the paid sick leave and guaranteed pin maximum wage and over time and miles and personal vehicles. Thats going to start to pay the Unemployment Insurance and something that they have not had to do for the past decade. Its just unfair for the competing businesses to have to pay these payroll taxes and minimum wage and all of these other things and uber and lyft do not have to. If the court does not side with them, theres what happens next. We cannot flip theres a mod that we built over 10 years. We cannot go out and hire tens of thousands of people directly overnight. During that time they would shut down the operations in california. They want a lot of analysts say that the reason that uber and lyft are doing this is because they want to see what happens with cam cal prop 22 this november. That was written and backed by uber and lyft and supported by the door dash as well. If it passes by the california voters this november, its going to exempt from the restrictions of ab5. Reporting live with ktvu fox 2 news. All right. Thank you for that. Still to come here on mornings on 2 the 9. Helping students to cope with the stress that theyre feeling over the distant learning. Up next, the resources in the bay area being offered in the School Survival guide. Public schools in San Francisco and oakland are located just three blocks away from a store selling tobacco. Lets talk about anxiety and welcoming dr. Lisa. We know you as dr. Lisa. Youre the president and ceo of parents ano, maam muss. Thanks for being with us. Youre welcome. I am glad to be here t a class with a principal this morning. I think its important to Say Mental Health is very important. Perhaps more were important than the three rs of traditional education. Thats the basis of the being. Were human beings and ran by the emotions. Even when we talk about the learning and making decisions, its if underlining emotional issues that drive the behaviors. Thats basic science. Getting in touch with those and is re dealing with those in a time that we have never experienced before and the levels of anxiety and certain frustration that all parents get and everybody feels because of the uncertainty of covid, its spreading what is going on and the balancing act that the parent versus to play at home between Online School, work, the demands of being a parent and just getting through the day. Of that is facing us right now. There was knolle much talk about mental health. Now, theres certainly is. I know that people are turning to the experts if they have that connection already established. Theres a california parent and youth help line that can help anyone that does not already have an expert that how it work. Absolutely. Anybody can call, and were speak to anyone in any language. They can call us and text us and email us. They can live chat us. That phone number is 8554272736 as well as going to the website caparentyouth. Org. After we went to shelter in was we need to create a response for families. People were thinking of parents in particular. In general people think about mental health, but all of this pressure on everyone creating another pandemic which is the well being. How do you balance the what is going on outside of you and what is going on inside of your heart. Parents need to really learn to tune in to the kid and themselves. Were human beings first. We went to the government and said that we need the support this. No one can be out there without emotional support. Theres trained counselors that are compassionate and listen to you vent, cry, whatever you need to do to hear from someone, but listen. Someone listening to you and actually listening to you and supporting you through the journey. You may have a friend or Family Member or a professional that you can reach out to. Maybe you dont have the resources or people dont understand you. Maybe youre just in the corner and feeling very sad and depressed and do not know where to turn. Pick up the phone and reach out for help. Asking for help is a sign of strength. You need to keep on asking and get the help that you need. We have Online Support groups. You can go to the website and sign up for the groups. Theres middle of the day and evenings because parents have schedules and the Work Schedules have changed because of the Online School and supervise of the younger children. They cannot just dash off to the office even if no one is there to take car of something. The lives have changed and creating that structure and stability for everybody and sitting down with your kids and talking about what do we need do to make life good for us. Good in the time of covid. What are the safety precautions . What are the routines of washing your hands and routine for the fun time. A lot of kids said to me that my parents think that theyre minu. We have recess and breaks. Parents are trying to work the schedules around the kids and how much Online Learning is going on is also an issue depending on the school district. Staff are feeling pull and maybe smaller groups of kids may be on the screen the younger that they are in order to interact with them, its the same thing. Its an online evidence based support group for the parents. They need a camera and Internet Connection to sign in. Were looking to expand and serve all of the children related to those parents, and were looking for the government as well as supporting all of that. We cannot do that alone. We need to see that the well being of parents is vital for the well being of everybody in that family. Sorry. I nodding my head to everything that you have said. In the second, how do we node that we need this help . When do we know that its over the top . I dont think that you should measure anything. If you feel stressed, pick up the phone or call or text or chat now. These measures are different for everybody. If you feel a pattern of behavior is different like youre really not sleeping or anything changes in your life, tune in to how you feel. Whatever that feeling is, it does not have to be a big issue. Whatever it is, reach out now. My advice is always reach out no matter what instead of saying just get over it. Its okay or whatever. So many things are missing in the life. You need to take the step and asking for help now. I want measures its too little and play it down or not, do it now because anything that is preventive, you its like tons of cure ahead of time. Anything that we do to reach out earlier is really important. Dont feel were not about lame and shame. We believe in the resiliency. During this time theyre resilient. Theyre balancing things that they have never done before and managing stuff like never before. We want to support that. I agree. I feel that im living it with my brothers and sisters in california. We have kept the number up. I am glad we have done that. Again, the numb every to the help line is on the screen. 8554273726. Dr. Lisa, thank you. This is one of the many resources at ktvu. Com.
