Well it is day two of Distance Learning. Class rooms were empty as online instruction kicked off yesterday. For at least the first six weeks classes are being taught through Distance Learning. Teachers have the option of wo their classroom. Generally the instruction is live just with the teacher sometimes saying to the students we will release you to do some work on your own, i will be available for questions. I dont think this is anybodys choice for how we would open school. It is the safe way to do it. School district Officials Say they will evaluate the first six weeks of online instruction and then make a decision on whether or not to allow students back into the classrooms depending on county health mandates. Well teachers in the Oakland Unified School district will vote on a tentative agreement on how Distance Learning will work this year. Online instruction began on monday. It wasnt till yesterday that the district announced a deal with the teachers union. Both sides have been negotiating details on everything from the amount of time spent during life instruction to the number of hours teachers work. Well today the epa will announce its reducing controls on methane gas emissions from oil and gas fields and pipelines. Epa administrator Andrew Wheeler will make the announcement in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. Its the latest step in the Trump Administrations roll back of obamaera policies aimed to combatting climate change. Environmentalists say the change in regulations ignores the Scientific Evidence on the need to reduce methane pollution. The Trump Administration wants to change regulations on shower heads following complaints from the president that they are not strong enough. Now shower heads are currently limited to two and a half gallons of water per minute under a law passed by nearly 30 years ago to save water. The new proposal would allow each nozzle to spray that much water, not just the overall shower head. The push comes less than a year after he said environmental regulators were looking at rolling back regulations on sinks, faucets and toiletss. The federal Labor Department released the weekly jobs report just about one hour ago for the first time in five months. Fewer than 1 Million People filed for new claims last week. Now 963,000 Americans Still filed new claims but that i the lowest number since the start of the pandemic after peaking at about 6. 9 million in late march. Prior to the pandemic, weekly jobless claims typically were less than 250,000. Our time is now 6 32. In other news we may see californias unemployment numbers go up as both uber and lyft threaten to shutdown their california operations temporarily if they are forced to classify their drivers as employees. Ktvus aly here now with this information about a fight over a california law. Good morning. Good morning, dave. The law is ab 5. It requires Ride Share Companies like uber and lyft to reclassify their employees or their drivers as employees instead of just independent contractors. In doing that it gives uber and lyft drivers things like they dont already have, benefits like paid sick leave and a guaranteed minimum wage. On monday a judge many california ordered both companies to comply with this state law and reclassify drivers as employees. They argue this new law should not apply to them and they are fighting it in court. Now the ceos of uber and lyft say they would have to shutdown operations for several months in california in order to comply with this law. Well to flip over hopefully the courts will reconsider. But no means to we want this to happen. Lets say they dont. Well, if they dont then we will have to work to move to a fulltime model. It is essentially how uber started which was kind of a whack car service with very few cars on the road and much higher prices. Within the next te ten days they have to set up systems to turn them into actual employees which will give them access to sick pay, vacation pay, overtime pay, minimum wage, unemployment benefits, health care, paid rest periods, mileage reimbursement. It is a pretty big under taking for these companies to take on. I cant imagine they havent seen this prepared for it already. However, i know they will some tech analysts say the real reason behind uber and lyft threaten to shutdown is because they want to wait ask see if california voters pass proposition 22 this november. That proposition and backed by uber and lyft would exempt ride share and delivery drivers from ab 5. Back to you. All right. Critics questioning how Contra Costa County leaders are spending some of the money from the federal governments cares act. The board of supervisors is spending [ indiscernible ] it will be to support Mental Health services at the jail like escorting inmates to their appointments and letting inmates have more time out of their cells. We have been working on improving both health care and Mental Healthcare for inmates in our custody and control. It was the wrong decision. I always speak to the racial disparities. If you start looking at who is incarcerated, you see too many brown and black people that are incarcerated. The federal government gave Contra Costa County 201000000 under the cares act. Mental Health Advocates say that money would be better spent on preventive measures to keep people out of jail instead of hiring more deputies. The county said they are also adding 29 jobs to the Health Department to increase Mental Health services. Well the mask debate continues in one florida city after a sheriff ordered deputies to not wear face coverings. Now Marion County sheriff billy woods sent a memo banning masks. There is even a sign on the front door of the Sheriffs Office telling people to take them off before entering the building. Then the City Council Just voted to over rule the mayor after he voted their vote requiring mask. When you are giving instructions to someone, like show me your hands, put your hands over your head, they need to be understood. It is hard for me to feel like there is not some politics at play from the mayor when it comes to just embracing the simple fact that the virus is real. There is real ways for mitigate it. So far they say less than 1 of nfl players have tested positive for the coronavirus and that percent age is lower when you include coaches and the team staff.
