The coronavirus already a hot topic on the campaign trail. After that briefing today from Public Health officials, both biden and harris will speak as well. Joe biden and senator harris attacked the president s response to the virus in harris very first speech. She attacked trumps leadership during this Public Health crisis. Meanwhile the president is defending himself. He blamed governors who wont open up for hurting the economy. There is a reason it has hit america worse than any other advanced nation. Its because of trumps failure to take it seriously from the start. They just want to keep theser houses, in their prisons. They call them prisons and i think a lot of it is the political reasons because they want to look as bad as possible on november 3rd. The pandemic impacted biden and harris first appearance together. There could be crowds blocking the walk ways. Now most dont bother to open. All a visitor can see are cable car lines or the empty tracks they ride on. Even the tourists who do come know it just isnt the same. Last time when i came here there was a lot of people. Now there is only a few people. But its more than just weird. Because of covid the lack of tourism, the economic engine that drives this city and creates the most jobs is sputtering like never before. It is the worst in San Francisco history in terms of the decline in spending. San francisco travel released its findings friday and for the first time shows the beautiful citys ugly numbers. Perhaps the uglist, lost tourism spending for this year and next year is estimated at 10. 6 billion. That is almost the equivalent of San Franciscos entire city budget. It will be a long, slow recovery to get back to where we were just last year. The number of visitor s is expected to be just half of last year. The projection this year 3. 1 billion. A lot of countries cant come here or are afraid tothat is th. Business is down an estimated 70 . We are not having fleet week this year. That hurts. Uber and lyft are threatening to temporarily shutdown operations in california if they are forced to classify their drivers as employees. Ktvus aly joins us to talk about the California Law that is behind that threat. Good morning, aly. Good morning, pam. Yes, the law is a b 5. It went into effect here in california earlier this year. On monday a judge ordered uber and lift to comply with it and reclassify their drivers as employees instead of independent contractors. That would give the driver s a a certain amount of benefits. They are making an additional threat to shutdown operations for the time being. Here is ubers ceo talking about this on msnbc. We will go back to the court and appeal the ruling and hope that the court reconsiders and its up to the court to reconsider or not. If a court doesnt reconsider, then in california it is hard to believe we will be able to switch our model to fulltime employment so i think uber will shutdown for a while. Now uber and lyft want the courts to wait and see if california voters pass prop 22 in november. That measure would exempt ride share and delivery drivers. Now if the judge doesnt issue a state to allow uber and lyft to delay their compliance then ubers ceo said they will temporarily shutdown operations here in california until november. Back to you. All right. Time is 5 31. Today joe biden and kamala hair harris will be briefed by Health Experts on the coronavirus. The countys board of supervisors voted to spend 2 million to hire 24 additional sheriffs deputies at the county jail in martinez. Their responsibilities will include supporting Mental Health services at the jail such as escorting inmates to appointments and allowing inmates more time out of their cells. We have been working on improving both health care and Mental Healthcare for inmates in our custody and control. It was the wrong decision and also i always speak to the racial disparities. It sits west of highway 280 along page mill road. Its a public park but there is an old City Ordinance dating back to 1959 that says only palo alto residents can use it. Many say that requirement discriminates on several fronts. The Police Rangers are out there guarding the gate on weekends and nonresidents arent allowed unless they are accompanied by someone who lives in palo alto. The mayor of palo alto was among those who want the park to be open to everyone. For over 60 years now the city of palo alto, the government i lead, has refused entry to anyone not rich enough to have a palo alto residence. That is what it comes down to for me. We are effectively discriminating based on wealth. Because of the complex relationships between wealth, race and social economic status we are discriminating based on race too. Last week city leaders approved a Pilot Program to let nonresidents buy permits. There are plans to bring up this issue before voters in two years. Well the monterey zoo is being sued.
