His one time 2020 rival is the first black woman in the first person of indian descent to be nominated for a National Office. Yes we should celebrate. It is an achievement. The symbolism is powerful. She said she is honored to join biden. They cited the energy she would ring to the campaign and her appeal to suburban women and black voters. Africanamerican women are particularly important to the success. To the degree that she is enthusiastic about the ticket. Enthusiastic about the future. Reporter they clashed in the primaries but she became a strong supporter of the former Vice President after she dropped out. She faces criticism, especially from progressives critical of her prosecutorial record as state attorney general. , africanamerican enthusiasm, and i can assure you that African American men, are not going to be enthused about Kamala Harris. She called for Police Reform on capitol hill. The jon kempin was quick to criticize her. The present calling him the number one pick. They said the decision could be felt for years to come. This is usually consequential, not only for joe biden, but for the future of the democratic ready. Reporter they will make the first appearance tomorrow when they speak together in delaware. Reporting live, greg lee, ktvu fox 2 news. In the last 90 minutes or so, President Trump actually spoke out about this of the white house during the normal press conference. What did he have to say . Reporter President Trump said what we expected him to say, which is kind of what we have heard throughout the process of picking a vp, what many have called opposition research. He went after her record, her prosecutorial record and also said that she was nasty to joe biden on the debate scene, which many have spoken about but clearly, she has weathered some of those things and joe biden certainly did not think enough of those things not to pick her. Might be thinking that even though there on opposite sides of the beginning, moving on, there about three months away from the election. What a will look like over the next three months or so . Reporter here is something to keep in mind. All of this is happening in the upcoming election and the vp pick, under the backdrop of the coronavirus, so joe biden has had very few public events. Many of his events have been virtual with Trump Campaign which has certainly gone after him saying that he staying in the basement. Kamala harris is a very excitable and energetic campaigner so we could see the 55yearold out there campaigning for joe biden and being a force multiplier for the Vice President. The former Vice President , which is certainly the role in a campaign for a Vice President , so she also has a very big speech to give next week at the Democratic National convention. You were talking just a little bit about the coronavirus and joe biden campaigning pretty much at home. He is 78 years old or he will be 78 years old by the time the election rolls around so, selecting Kamala Harris here, who is many decades younger than him, this seems to be a game changer for the party itself in the future. Joe biden will be well into the 80s by the time there is a reelection if he is elected president of the united states. So what does this mean for the party moving forward . Reporter as you said, if they were to win in november, and joe biden were to run for reelection, again, he would be 81 years old, which would be, many consider, something difficult for him to do. And many believe that he could just be a one term president , if you were to win. That being the case, many believe it is setting up the future of the party, meaning that the future of the party could be run by women as well as the fact that shes a woman of color, which is the direction, look at the way the down ballot races have been going, progressive women. Women of color, and many saying it is about time that this kind of thing happens. Okay. Reporting for us live. Reactions are coming in from lawmakers across the country. For more down below, the ktvu mobile app. You can download it on our homepage. Vladimir putin said today that russia has developed a vaccine and that it is registered for use. Claims the vaccine has been tested and proven effective. He also says one of his doctors has been given the vaccine. Others to get it first will be medical workers, teachers, and other at risk groups in russia. Theres intent worldwide work being done to develop a covid vexing, including right here in the u. S. We have a look now at where those efforts stand. The question comes up, where is a vaccine . Heres what we know for sure. Worldwide, there are now some 165 covid19 vaccines in development. Only 40 are in some stage of human trials. Only 2 have been approved for very limited use. None have been approved for general use. This is remarkable speed that we have been developing vaccines with. Very fast, but still, very careful. That too fast increases dangerous. Having a vaccine that may not work and that puts us in danger putting something into people prosperous bodies that could harm them. There are three phases in developing vaccines and a trial vaccine is a in a to small groups of people in phase two, the number of people is increased and targeted to people who have similar age, health, and other criteria. Phase three, thousands of people of all kinds get the vaccine to verify that it is both safe and effective. So, why is phase three so critical . We had a lot of vaccines and drugs that have died in phase three. In the operation warp speed, three possible vexing candidates have been funded for phase three trials. That includes vaccine from moderna, Oxford University astrazeneca, and pfizer. All three, says dr. Schwartzberg, are seriously promising. There is a Long Distance between being seriously promising and actually having a vaccine that we know is safe and efficacious. Reporter to gain approval, they must provide proof from strictly controlled trials and be at least 50 effective against covid19. Also, to speed up other proposed covid19 therapeutic drugs, medicines, as well as vaccines, u. S. National institute of health have established partnerships with at least 18 biopharmaceutical companies. Therapeutics actually, ive always been thinking, have a better chance at winning the first race, then the vaccine. Reporter he takes a very dim view of the russian claim to have a safe effective vaccine with no reviewable proof and no phase three completed. This is wrong. It is a responsible. And it is using whoever is going to receive this vaccine, using those people as guinea pigs. Reporter there are no vaccines for aids, ebola, sica, and dengue fever. Thank you. Want to talk more now about the status of the vaccines that are in development right now. Were joined by dr. Lee riley. He is a uc berkeley professor. It is always good to have you here. I want to start first with this news coming out of russia. What you make of russian president putin claiming victory in the race for a vaccine . I share the same concern raised by my colleague. Vaccines are some of the safest medical products we have in the world. The reason they are so safe is because they undergo a very rigorous testing. A safety check. So, without the phase three trial, which is the way to really demonstrate safety, we dont know what is going to happen when this vaccine goes into, when it is rolled out into the public. So, theres a lot of concern. Even some russian scientist and Public Health officials have raised concerns about this. So, then the other potential concern is that if any adverse events are recognized after the vaccine is rolled out in russia, and other leases of the world, that is going to have an impact on some of the other vaccines that are being developed and undergoing trials right now. There are a lot of issues here. I want to go back to how russia was able to do this so quickly. Do believe that they did cut corners and rush to get this out . I cannot really say that they cut corners. The phase one and phase two trials with about 70 some people and they demonstrated the same thing that the other vaccines have demonstrated. The things underwent phase one and phase two trials. This vaccine is based on delivering the coronavirus protein through a common cold virus and they are using two types of it. 5 and 26. Unconfirmed about the use of 5, because lumpy party have antibodies so it might not work and so, that is a concern. And, the 26, actually the prevalence of antibodies against the virus varies from place to place in the world, so this virus may work in some places, but it might not work in other places, so i dont know if they have done the real homework needed to really see this and whether or not it will be effective or not, so that is a concern, but theyve done the proper ways 1 and phase 2 trials. As you mentioned, homework is essential here. Going back to the other vaccines that are under development, what are you seeing so far . How optimistic are you that a vaccine will be developed and possibly distributed by the end of the year, if not just a little bit after the new year . I think we will have some results from some of the phase 3 trials going on right now by about november and the end of november or maybe december or so. And we will actually my not have vaccines that are deliverable, im not sure. It will take a lot of effort and time to put together all of the resources to have the vaccine available to large numbers of people, so that might take more time. Is certainly might, but it is interesting news out of russia. Something that we will continue to follow. It is always a pleasure. Thank you. It could mean a houseful of people on zoom at the same time and how to handle the text off and the strain on your wifi. Were joined now. Thank you for joining us. Lets get right to it because we have all been having issues with this. If you have a family, this possibly even worse. Is the internet that we havent work vastly different from what we have at home . It could be better than the one at work because you dont have tens or hundreds of calling sharing a network so depends on the service that we have. Depending on who the Service Provider is, you can increase your bandwidth. So i have comcast and i decided to pay a little extra money and it was not that much to get a gigabit, which is a really very fast service and i get it because of situations like this when i am live on zouma or skype or Something Like that, but if you have several people using zouma or someone is watching a movie while you are online doing work, that could interview with your bandwidth and you could be having issues. I have my bandwidth drop off in the middle of a live newscast. What can the family, in addition to purchasing a higher grade of service, what else do they need in their house to make sure everyone in the family is running efficiently, since we are going to be in the situation for a while . Check your router and your wifi. Have a large house, you might want a mesh network which means that you have repeaters in the house and it will distribute the wifi better from rooms that are farther from the center router. Every once in a while you might want to reboot or power cycle your modem if you have one or you might just have a single gateway. That tends to get the cobwebs out a little bit. Be aware of what is running in the background. You dont want three of her kids each watching a different movie on netflix will youre trying to do a live broadcast. Make sure that the family is coordinating the activities as much as possible. I do this interview was happening today, so when i lost internet last week and i was on the air, decided to pull out my ethernet cable and plug it directly into my router to give me a more stable connection. Should families investigating an ethernet cable and plug it in for the laptop for a firmer connection to the internet . I dont know how i look, but i do know that i have a dedicated ethernet port going directly from my router to my desktop pc and a highend webcam. Using one built into the computer, i am using a 1080p logitech webcam. And have a good broadcast quality webcam. Even if you are in business meetings, you want to look and sound as good as you can. Lighting is important. Make sure that you are not in front of an open window or window without shades and have light coming at you. I think that was directed at me. I am sitting in front of a window right now. It is very difficult to light in front of a window. Even though your on my screen. Not looking at you, i am looking at the camera and that is another tip. That is exactly right. Especially in business meetings. Do not look off to the side. We are all broadcasting, even those who are not working for a television station, we are all on the air these days. To suck when you walk into a meeting and you want to make sure they are presentable, this is part of it. Thank you. Families are wanted to this. Thank you so much for your insight today. President trump says he believes that coronavirus is more effective with therapeutics. There ready to rock. We are very close to a vaccine. Reporter a new report says that President Trump is looking at options to temporarily block citizens and permanent residents from reentering the u. S. If they are thought to have coronavirus. In washington, Lauren Blanchard. San Francisco Mayor london breed provided an update on the coronavirus in the city as well as her proposed covid19 budget. The mayor do not offer a new timeline on when more businesses might reopen, but she says she expects the city to spend 446 million on the pandemic next year. This will include 185 million for health measures, including testing. About 353 million is expected to come from a combination of reimbursements from the federal Emergency Management agency, state grants, and federal stimulus money. She says the city will cover the remaining 93 million. Part of why we are investing 446 million in this upcoming budget to respond to covid has everything to do with the understanding that we are going to be living with this for some time. That is money that i wish we could divert to other things, but unfortunately, this is the reality of today. The mayor says as of today there nearly 7700 cases of coronavirus in San Francisco and that 67 people have died in the city from the virus. Census workers started visiting homes today were people have not answered the questionnaire sent out to homes across the country. Census takers are going door to door asking a series of questions about all the people who live in a home. The census is used to determine how much federal funding goes to states and local communities. The information also decides how many congressional representatives each state will get. So, you might get a knock on your door from a census taker. For more on this, were joined by a representative from the u. S. Census bureau. Thank you for joining us. According to the pew research center, it about 4 in 10 adults have not responded to the census, we also know they are unwilling to answer the door because of coronavirus a fierce. How will you overcome these particular challenges . We will reach out to several different partners that we have had over the past year, Different Community organizations and things like that. All right. So, lets move to this one. The timeline to collect information was cut by one month so basically have a couple of different challenges here. Does the agency believe it can still be able to gather all of the data that is needed from every home and from every american across the country . That is our number one goal. The second goal is also staying safe within our communities. We are actively doing everything we can in order to get people to fill out the census forms in the community. It is very important and only happens once in a decade. When you have people coming to your doors, people are very apprehensive about anyone coming to the door. So, at least of this question about the security. Are there any identifying marks of the census takers will have . A certain interval uniform or information to let them know that this is an actual Census Agency worker . We have badges that say that we are with the u. S. Census and we also have bags and Different Things that indicates that we are census employees. So might have a lanyard that says census as well. There are items that we have so that everyone can see that we are census employees and we just have a couple easy questions that we are going to ask you in order to help the community. Lets talk about some of the questions. One of the questions people have is that were not going to ask your immigration status. But how do you reassure folks about some of the questions you will be asking . So under title 13, questions that we ask are confidential and it is general questions. It could be how many people stay in your home . Things like that. It could be how long have you lived at your home . It really depends on how many people stay in your home and things of that nature. And one quick question, we only have a few seconds left, but will they request to come into your home . I think everyone should know about that for their own safety and security. We are following cdc guidelines. We are staying 6 feet apart and being able to ask pertinent questions. And also, we are going to be Wearing Masks and we will carry Hand Sanitizer as well. All right. Thank you so much for joining us this afternoon and providing your insight into this very important issue and that you have to complete every 10 years. Thank you for having me. I will be speaking on a lots of the programs and a lot of the work that we do alongside the community in the mayfair neighborhood in East San Jose. We support workingclass and immigrant families in san jose and we build Community Power in East San Jose by organizing around resident led solutions. Families have identified access to Early Education as a key priority and so, this provides bilingual and culturally relevant workshops, programs, and a coop preschool to families at no charge. These spaces are people are. Led and developed with parents leadership. Our longterm strategy is to activate a base of residents who can affect change across all sectors to bring greater equity and resources to East San Jose. There are definitely some Ambitious Goals that you are trying to achieve their. Talk a little bit about how the parties have shifted during the pandemic. For us, education is always the priority. We know that there are many challenges in the educational system, especially for our families, our immigrant families. And, for many reasons, the systems are not getting the support out to these neighborhoods, they have the highest needs. They have many high needs in terms of education, financial resources, housing, and we want to be able to address that, but we cannot do it without the leadership of the community, the residence, because they are the ones that are experiencing these hard situations. Right now, we know covid is a strain on families and it is hard to social distance because of shared housing. Many families must still work and children have to adjust to a Virtual Learning model and not everybody has access to computers or the internet. Even before the pandemic, mayfair has experienced the digital divide. So that is something that you are hoping to address, especially right now because it is being highlighted during this pandemic. We appreciate all of the work that you are doing. Happy to help raise additional funding for the organization. Thank you so much for joining me this afternoon and for those at home who would like to contribute to our giving day drive and to support the organization, just go to ktvu. Com. In the satellite and radar, we have showers and thunderstorms out towards the sierra. And for us, the typical marine layer clouds with the help of an onshore breeze and the onshore wind is pushing the clouds back into the bay. But as you cannot see the projected location, it is basically a tropical depression. That will be appear. We could actually tap into some of this moisture in the form of high clouds and maybe some rain showers down towards Southern California this weekend. It will bear watching for us as well as we head into the weekend. For us right now on the short term, we have low clouds and fog near the coast over good portion of San Francisco. A bit of top on the bay waters. Overnight lows will start off wednesday morning in the 50s and the low 60s. Here is the setup. This is the weather cools off today. This is an area of low pressure increasing the onshore breeze. This will gradually left on out as a big area of High Pressure begins to rebuild and this is the source of the warming up as we head toward friday and into the weekend. As i mentioned, some moisture could be moving in from the south. It could feel a bit muggy around here by the weekend and also a few extra high clouds as well. Be watching out for that.
