In washington, lauren blanchard, ktvu fox 2 news. The San Francisco Unified School District will start the School Season next week. It was made nearly a month ago and parents are wondering how different the superintendent of San Francisco unified. A very busy man. Dr. Matthews, thank you for taking the time to visit with us. If there was one not that i heard from parents within the district last year is that there was no connection between teachers and students. This is something new and were going through this pandemic together. I guess they were more like interaction. As we look forward to next week, can you guarantee there will be more like interaction between the students and teachers. Im not talking a couple hours, we are looking three, four, five hours each day. Once again, thank you. Definitely. We are moving towards our Teachers Union last night ratified a memorandum of understanding and hopefully it will be ratified tonight by the board. In that memorandum of understanding, those were our key points. Consistency, clarity, communication and connection. To answer that question, there is a guarantee of four hours of instruction and that is the minimum for the upper grades. Three for the lower grades and your question about live instruction, there is a guarantee of at least two hours of live instruction but many teachers will go beyond that. That is just too they are and what they do. We are very proud of our Teachers Union especially under the leadership of their current president. Used to expect the board to approve this tonight . I dont want to get out in front of them but that definitely is my hope. I do expect it. On the following up on that question, i hope as a parent myself, creating content that engages the students, that would be a priority for me. Is not a priority for you, superintendent . We are creating content and as you said, we have heard from a number of parents. We held seven town halls over the summer. More than 16,000 people attended those town halls. We had the opportunity to hear from them and they told us loud and clear they wanted Distance Learning to have a connection and its about the connection, connection, connection. We have increased the resources for teachers and we created a Distance Learning died last year. We are wrapping them up and that will be online so parents can see what we are expecting and what they caexpect but it t contact. Talk about laptops. How important it is for all of us. Especially for students. Will the students be provided tablets and ipad. Will they have Internet Access they need. Across the city. I percentage on it but can you say 100 of the students will be given the technology and Internet Access they need . Absolutely. We can say confidently that every student who needs a laptop or device and connection will receive that. In the spring we gave out 13,000 devices, laptops, chromebooks, and 3500 hot spots to take those connections happen. We been able to raise 12. 5 million toward that effort. We are confident that we are going to be able to fight each and every student who needs a device and they will get a device in every student who needs a connection will have it. We will make sure the t followi story out of georgia and you may have seen the images of ones School District, the hallway is crowded with student wearing face masks and all of a sudden 250 students are in quarantine. You made the call a month ago to start this next semester at home. Do you foresee when you see images like that across the country do you foresee that the system is learning will remain the same. Basically through the end of the year, until january 1, in your district . At this point it really depends upon the science and data and looking at the numbers. As you know, San Francisco is on the states watch list. There looking at the same numbers we are looking at. We made the determination and three days later the governor came out and we were on the watch list. We are looking at the science and the spread of the virus and my hope is that we, as a community and society, will do the things we need to do with face coverings and social distancing so we can get the virus under control so eventually we can get back. We have to leave it there but i want to say, i wanted to ask you about providing School Lunches and for children. I know the district is doing that. We have more information on your website. We appreciate your time. I know you are extremely busy and im hoping you have a great fall semester. Thank you again. Thank you. Across the bait there is no deal with the Oakland Unified School district and the Teachers Union for the fall semester. Students this morning are logging in for day two of Distance Learning. What do you think the biggest thing is that is happened since the pandemic began . Yes, so, as we know, our communities, specifically. , families have to deal with housing, and students are adjusting to Distance Learning one a lot of families do not have infrastructure in place. There are a lot of adjustments that our communities have had to make in order to respond ton affecting us. Is it hard to get the children to understand what is going on, especially since a lot of them are not english speaking. Maybe their parents dont have a grasp of exactly what is going on and when will this all end or get better . I think it is hard for children. We have to understand, we are asking them to process things that are very complex. We are asking them to act as adults. And understand whats happening in the world. So, is it hard, of course. I think to undermine what parents have to do with the its really difficult to understand. As a parent myself, having to deal with the daily limitations, it is a tremendous effort and i think that is the reason we are continuously offering workshops basis. As many students have back to class parents might be feeling the stress and pressure to help with Distance Learning. This morning on the ninth we are helping those parents find local resources word they our expert for more. I think the number one idea is to have a plan. Parents did what ever they could to get through those couple months of Distance Learning and now that it is for real, what is the best way to approach the time that is ahead. I really think the most important thing for parents is to try and have a good attitude. We are not in triage anymore. We want to focus on lifelong learning. We want to get through this. Is not what anyone wants to do to start the school year but keep your attitude good. You dont have to be teacher of the year. You dont have to make the honor roll. Make sure you have a good routine in place and you have a couple essential documents close by. You can find those that Common Sense Media. Approached the year with an attitude of we will get through this. This is temporary. Lets do our best. Between zoom classrooms, school work being done on google classrooms, and sometimes i email the teacher with questions. Juggling all that information can be a headache. On Common Sense Media you have some good chichis. What are the important sites for me . If you are doing it at home, what we recommend is to have a cheat sheet like you mentioned. This is like an on for your babysitter to know who to call in an emergency. But, this is like for who the teacher is and what time classes are and what their schedule is. Where they turn in homework. We have a customizable google doc the parents can use to get all of that critical information so you have it handy when your kids needed in the moment. That is number one. Number two is we have something that we developed that is called a Digital Learning pledge. For kids and parents what will be critical this year is to get on the same page about what the expectations are, what the rules are about Online Learning and using the devices responsibly. , we have a contract and like a lot of parents set up a cell phone contract or media agreement, this is designed especially for Online Learning. It is a great customizable form. You can download this, fill it out, and approached the year on the same page. A lot of parents i talked to say before the pandemic they were super good about screen time. 30 minutes a week. But now, it seems there are no barriers anymore. How do you help parents navigate this new terrain . It will be one of the most difficult things coming up. Kids will want to use their devices for all kinds of activities. Like we have seen over the past few months, kids go on for socializing and games. They go online to watch netflix. They go online to le what i recommend for parents to identify each of those different categories of screen time activities and instead of its all screen time. So, you can say how much time do you want for your work today . A show . Time do you want to ultimately help your kids manage their own screen time better because kids want to get through their homework pretty fast. They know if they are playing a game or multitasking while doing my homework they will finish it on time. If they called their activities what they are, i know i need to finish my homework by 7 00 pm, or whatever it is. Then they get from 7 00 to 8 00 for playtime. I recommend parents work on that type of language. Better now than in december. Caroline, thank you for joining us. I know a lot of parents are stressed. We have a lot of resources for you online at ktvu. Com. Resources for learning, organizing, its all at ktvu. Com. I just looked on the dining room table and salt my sixth grader is looking at star wars videos. I think we have a ways to go on this one. Its going to be something we have to get used to.
