South bay students are getting ready for the new school year. The county is teaming up with san jose to provide laptops, wi fi and other services to more than 15,000 students in underserved parts of the county. The goal of this 7 million program, keep every student connected with a very teachers as another semester of Online Learning begins. I need students to be able to translate information. Perhaps they dont have a smart phone. It makes educating very, very challenging. For me as a parent, it is important that students should have a device so everyone could have an equal opportunity to learn the same way as other students. The new School Year Begins in some counties. Santa clara county will begin later this week. Distance learning is causing a lot of anxiety in many homes where parents are often doing double duty as teachers. Mental Health Experts say that that stress could be reduced greatly with a highly structured plan with a set routine for students taking classes at home on the computer. They also say Strong Communications between parents and the children really helps. There is a lot of stress to go around. I think we have to be gentle with ourselves and each other to realize that this is a tough time for an awful lot of people. You are not alone. I am with you every step of the way. Coronavirus cases are starting to stabilize in the hardhit states across the country. There is some concern that students on campus could lead to more cases. Now, the u. S. Is reporting an average of 54,000 new cases a day. That is down 20,000 from its peak last month. Some Health Officials fear that in Person Learning will spark another wave of infections. Research for the university of texas at austin estimates 80 of americans live in counties where at least one in fact person could show up to a school of at least 500 people. Now, a computer glitch has been under reporting coronavirus cases has been fixed. Case counts from each county are expected to be updated in the next day. The governor said modifications will be coming, but warned not to expect any drastic changes i nine bay area counties. Happening today, the Santa Clara County board of supervisors will consider fines for people who do not wear a mask or social distance. They are expected to vote this morning on whether to expend the power to businesses and residences who violate the Public Health order under the proposal, county employees in addition to Law Enforcement would be able to issue fines from 25 to 500 depending on the violation. It looks like president trumps executive order giving an extra 400 a week in Unemployment Benefits wont really help californians who are out of a job. That is because states would have to pay 100 of that 400 a week. Governor newsom says, here, in california, that would mean 700 million per week. That is just not in californias budget. The Development Department has been struggling to respond to the huge number of people filing unemployment claims. You look back to the Great Recession in 2008, 2009, 2010, a lot of people lost their jobs. It happened over the course of 12 to 18 months. Whereas, in the case of the pandemic, it has been like 12 to 18 weeks. Many Unemployed People in california say that they still have not been able to get through to edd or to talk to a human. There are several vaccines in stages of development. There are a lot of questions about whether these vaccines are effective. Dr. Anthony fauci says the chances of a vaccine that is 98 effective are really slim. Scientist say a vaccine that works 75 of the time would be good. But, the fda has already said it would accept a vaccine that is 50 effective. Most Health Experts say a vaccine will be the best weapon in the fight against the coronavirus. If we get a vaccine that is partially protective, we can develop ways of treating this so it is no longer a serious or lethal infection. I think we have won the battle. Not everybody is willing to take a vaccine. A new poll is out showing a third of the people who were surveyed said, even if one was available at no cost, today, they would not get that vaccine. Police in palo alto are investigating palo alto vandalism. Video shows an unidentified man spraying maga over the artwork. The posters were created to support the black lives matter movement. The person said, the man was shouting, patriot lives matter. He said, the posters were anti trump. It gofundme page has been set up to reprint the destroyed posters. They want to see if there are any survivors. This was very surreal, hearing the voices plead for help, us trying to find out exactly how many people was in the house, disagree trying to make sure everyone was okay. That explosion also damaged other homes. The baltimore gas and Electric Company says it is checking records in the area, checking on recent inspections. Att welcome back to mornings on 2. Police in berkeley have arrested a woman accused of setting a fire at a jewish temple. It happened at the congregation temple on university avenue. A trashbin was set on fire. That person ran away. Bystanders helped put the fire out. After checking security video, Police Arrested this woman, shamika adams. Police say they dont know if she is connected to a similar arson investigation. Two weeks ago, a trashcan burned outside of a Christian Center on that same block of university avenue. Contra costa countys District Attorney announced a major change in the policy on Police Body Cam videos. Now, the da says prosecutors review all available body cam video and go through a supervisor before filing a charge of resisting arrest or attacking police. This change comes after the department dropped charges of felony arrest filed against the three richmond men. In that case, Police Reports were not consistent with body cam a video. The new policy is already drawing criticism, saying it protects people who protect attack officers. Three people are recovering after they were shot at and airbnb party. Neighbors say more than 50 people gathered for the party on saturday morning. Police responded at 1 32 response of the shooting. They found three victims with gunshot wounds. Chicago police set up a team of investigators to help identify more suspects in a major looting. So far, Chicago Police have arrested 100 people in connection with this, a night of violence and looting on chicagos famous mile shopping district last night. There are a lot of police in the area as well. Seattles police chief says she is retiring from the Police Department after a 7 to one vote to defund the Police Department. Now, it would cut the Police Budget by 3 million. It would reallocate that money towards programs that highlight affordable housing, shelters and Mental Health services. One city councilmember held out on the almost unanimous vote because, she says the cuts didnt go far enough. With my no vote today, i affirm the unchanging demands, Defund Police by 50 . I dont think it is thoughtful. In some ways, it was petty and hasty. And, i dont thgoing to deliver more just policing for black lives in the city of seattle. Some say that this is the first step to more sweeping cutbacks and rethinking of Law Enforcement in seattle. In the meantime, the Police Chiefs last day will be september 2nd. It was the 75th consecutive night of protests in portland. This time, it was in a different part of town. Last night march to the north precinct was quickly declared an unlawful assembly. It is six miles from downtown where most protest have been happening. Police made multiple arrests after they forced protesters onto side streets. We are not sure what is going to happen. Just the destruction i mean, if they were marching, i would be marching with them. I think it was the city of process, a city of war. Yesterdays demonstration began after a tweet from the president that said, quote, portland, which is out of control, should finally, after three months, ring in the national guard. The guard is ready to act immediately. The time is 4 49. The manager of the bay area band smash mouth is defending a weekend concert at the sturgis motorcycle rally in south dakota. It was an outdoor concert. It was on sunday. It was 50 50 capacity, but it shows nobody was wearing a face mask, no social distancing. In a statement, the manager of the band said, the promoter had strict mask and social distancing guidelines for all workers. They made sure the concert happened as safely as possible. A marin county town has a project offering free facemasks. It is becoming popular. The volunteer group collects cloth masks, bandannas and surgical masks. They hang them on trees, offering them for free. This coincides with the street closures and Outdoor Dining as streets and parks started getting busy again. Business owners came up to me that first night and said, thank you so much. I cannot tell you how many people i am turning away because they dont have masks. Now i can send them down the street. The donated masks are cleaned and sundried before they are sealed in a plastic bag. You can find them at creek park and citys downtown. To keep up with all of the demand, the group has started a gofundme page to raise money to get even more masks. The time is 4 57. One library is loaning out books after they were closed for 5 months. The new program kicked off yesterday at the main library. You can put books or other items , then pick them up in front of the library branch. It is a limited service. It also launches at the Excelsior Branch today. The librarys version of Curbside Pickup gives library growers a contact freeway to reserve books and take them back. Since we closed, we closed on march 13th, we have had a constant stream of patients who have been asking us to reopen so they can get their books. People love print books. That is what they have been missing during the closure. Other than the main library and Excelsior Branch, other libraries are still closed. But, the library hopes to start the to go plan at other Library Branches next month. Two furloughed workers in Southern California are now finding success in the middle of a pandemic. They are two young chefs in san diego. They started making pizzas at home. Once the restaurant they worked at had to close, they started selling pizza to their neighbors and friends on instagram. Then, the business took off. A local Business Owner noticed it and let them set up shop in his market and deli. What better chance to be able to help young kids . These are inspiring young chefs.
