The briefing had just gotten started when the agent came in and spoke to the president who quickly followed him out of the room. We later learned there had been a shooting outside the white house. The president returned a few minutes later and told reporters that a suspect had been shot by Law Enforcement, and taken to the hospital. The white house was briefly put an lockdown. The white house is now defending a set of executive orders that President Trump signed over the weekend. The orders suspend the payroll tax and expand Unemployment Benefits to 400 a week. Of that amount, 100 must be covered by the states. Depends on the individual state, but a lot of money whether be going to a lot of people very quickly, and i have stricted the secretary of the treasury to move as quickly as he can. Democrats say the executive orders are unconstitutional. It is unclear if they will take the matter to court, or if it becomes a catalyst to bring both parties together to work out a deal. California said it doesnt have the mean to help the federal government pay for the extra unemployment benefit. Millions of people are still out of work and the states edd office is struggling to keep up. Today tom vacar heard from some of the californias who are suffering. The rule a big San Francisco superior court judge gives uber and lyft 10 days now file an appeal. The state filed suit to force the Rideshare Companies to comply with ab5 which classifies gig workers as employees with benefits. The ruling could leave as many as 100,000 rideshare drivers without a job. On wall street today, the major index were mostly higher on optimism over the executive orders from President Trump. The program initially began win schools closed in midmarch. Since then, the district has distributed close to 4 million student meals. The School District said they were trying to get computers to approximately 2,000 students and said it may take to the end of this week. I wish it were more organized, but also have empathy for the teachers and what theyre going through. Reporter this Kindergarten Teacher said of the two classes she taught today, a combined 17 students didnt show up on line. Thats about 40 of the kindergarteners there. Whether that means they dont have a computer yet or internet at home, i havent been able to contact everybody yet. Reporter under the guidelines severalled out by the teachers union, online class instruction is supposed to last one hour a day per teach person that could change once the ran into the School District reach an agreement. The district was scheduled to open this wednesday, but district officials Just Announced they are now opening next monday, august 17th. All students will begin the year with Distance Learning. M. , man was shot and killed near 72nd avenue and international boulevard in east oakland. After being shot in a car, the third homicide victim on holly crashed into a neighbors yard. She said its time to stop generating revenue from incarcerated people and families through phone calls, commissary markups and other services. In 2018, inmates and their families paid more than 1 million to and from county jails. A guard from san quentin prison has now died from the coronavirus. Sergeant Gilbert Polanco is the first worker at the prison to die from the infection. He had been hospitalized for more than a month. Relatives believe polanco caught the virus at work after inmates from a prison in connecticut were transferred to san quentin. He lived in san quentin. He had been a guard in san quentin for 30 years and planned to retire next year. A gofundme page has been set up for his family. It says his wife and daughter are also infected. And another san quentin inmate has died. Pay agreepedro arias had been on death row since 1990 for a murder out of sacramento county. In silicon valley, some districts flourish with technology, while others lag behind. Students who are at home, that dont have access to devices or internet are falling behind. Theyre not getting access to any of the learning. Reporter so county and San Jose City leaders are spending millions of dollars to bridge a Digital Divide dating back to the late 1990s. There are thousands of students who will languish if we dont act now. The county spending over 7 million to provide 15,000 students with computers and tablets in underserved areas. Earlier this year, the city of san jose ponied up over 8 million for mobile internet hot spots to improve connectivity for 11,000 students. A lot of the teaching that requires video connectivity, obviously high band width is necessary. So you are limited to how you can connect and how well you can study. When they dont have access, they dont have access to learn. Reporter Officials Say upwards of 26,000 students will eventually benefit this school year from the joint complementary alliance between county and city forces. For me as a parent, its very, very important that every student should have a device so everyone can have an equal opportunity to learn the same way as their students. Reporter School Starts as early as this week for some districts here in Santa Clara County. County Officials Say and technology has been purchased and distributed, and that process will continue over the next month or so, until all students who have been target h technology they need. A coalition of students and faculty are speaking out about problems at San Francisco city college. The group ccsf for all held a virtual News Conference today to talk about the current challenges at city college. They include layoffs and cuts to classes and programs, and the need for more funding and Student Support during the conference pandemic. The university of california is now requiring all faculty, staff, and students to get a flu shot before november 1st. The mandate is part of a systemwide order. Santa rosa around 10 degrees cooler. So a pretty nice night out there. The fog will deepen that marine layer. So well see the fog more present tomorrow morning. Pleasant temperatures right now, though, as we get into the rest of our evening. Our low pressure system is keeping us a little cooler and a little bit more breezy today, and that will keep the same story for tomorrow. But then as we move into the latter part of the week, High Pressure is going to build up, as it so often does, in the desert southwest. When that happens, well see temperatures ramp back uninland.
