Students from the Oakland Unified School district are heading back to way. Parents and students have little guidance on what to expect. There is no official plant because the Oakland Association has yet to reach a deal on what social distancing will look like. They started at the beginning of july, still no agreement. The biggest points include having small targeted groups to give students who need extra help and attention, and bringing in substitutes to co teaching deal with technical problems. First day of School Jitters are normal. The unknown is making that that much more stressful for students. I am nervous. I dont know what to expect. It could go well, or really bad, i think. A sudden resignation by the head of public health, the doctor gave no reason for their resignation. It came less than a week after the Health Department Computer System undercounted the number of coronavirus cases. They took over last october as the head of public health. Here are the latest numbers of coronavirus cases. California has 560,000 coronavirus cases, more than 10,000 people have died from the virus. The number of hospitalizations from the virus have gone down for 6 Straight Days. Statewide, 5600 people are being treated for the coronavirus. Here, in the bay area, we have more than 61,000 virus cases. At 914 people dying from the virus. A san quentin prison guard has died from the coronavirus. Sergeant Gilbert Polanco is the 1st to die from the infection. He had been hospitalized for more than a month. Relatives believe he caught the virus at work after inmates were transferred to san quentin. His son talk to us from south korea, where he is serving in the u. S. Army. I dont think it was done correctly, personally, i dont make it was done correctly. They were kind of rushing it, pushing people. I dont think that the inmates should have ever moved. He had served as a guard for 30 years and was planning to retire next year. A gofundme for the family says his wife and daughter are also infected. The page has raised more than 67,000 for the family. Another inmate has also died, pedro arias died yesterday outside the hospital from what appears to be complications related to the coronavirus. He had been on death row since march of 1990. More than 5200 inmates have contracted the virus since the outbreak began in late may. Currently, there are 157 active cases at the prison, 25 inmates have not died from covid19. At the santa rita jail in san quentin, there are 10 active cases among inmates. Officials say seven of the cases are asymptomatic. 160 inmates have recovered and remain at the jail. 14 have recovered and are no longer in custody. 11 Staff Members currently have the virus, but are quarantining and will not be allowed to work until cleared by health guidelines. Coronavirus cases nationwide have now topped 5 million. 40 of the cases are in five states. California has the most, followed by florida, texas, new york and georgia. Almost 163,000 people have died from the virus in the u. S. Health officials believe more americans could die by the end of this month. The death toll could reach 300,000 by december. The virus is moving like a freight train, even though the president has ignored, delayed and distorted what that is. Scientists are also getting a better idea of if people will get vaccinated. According to one poll, 65 of americans would take an fda approved coronavirus vaccine. 35 said they would not. Senators will meet again, trying to meet a deal on an economic stimulus package, after President Trump took matters into his own hands over the weekend. The president signed for executive orders. One would give an additional 400 a week in supplemental unEmployment Benefits. The others concern student loan relief, eviction protection for renters, and cutting the payroll tax. Democrats and some republicans say those executive orders are a constitutional overreach. Democrats want to challenge us in court and hold up on Employment Benefits to those hardworking americans were out of a job because of covid. They are going to have a lot of expanding to do. The previous an important benefit, which ran out on august 1st, was fully funded by the federal government. Now, President Trump is asking states to pay 25 of it. New evidence from the cdc shows the coronavirus is hitting children harder than first thought. A new cdc report says one in three children hospitalized with covid19 were in intensive care. Some had the patterns of adults. They found that latino children were eight times as likely as white children to be hospitalized. Health experts are raising alarms, saying some potential coronavirus vaccines may not work for everybody, especially for people who are overweight. The studies show vaccines dont work as well for people who are obese, including the flu vaccine. A federal judge ordered pg and e to take safety precautions. They were ordered to better inspect powerlines, hire more tree trimming supervisors and upgrade the electrical equipment. Investigators in upstate new york are trying to determine the cause of a fire that caused major damage to rachel rays home. It started last night at the home in warren county, 50 miles north of albany. Rachael ray and her husband managed to get out safely. New zealand has been successful in eliminating the virus by proposing a Strict Lockdown in late march. Only 100 people had the virus. In all, new zealand has had 1500 coronavirus cases and 22 deaths. In beirut, dge was questioning the security agencies over last weeks devastating blast that killed more than 160 people. Protesters are taking to the streets and calling for the entire government to resign. The Justice Minister resigned today. The first happened on saturday evening when a man was shot and killed at a bus stop on lakeshore avenue. Later that night, another man was shot and killed on 72nd avenue in international boulevard. One more person was injured and taken to the hospital. Early sunday morning, one man was fatally shot inside a crashed car on holly avenue. I heard a loud boom, some screech, a hit. Like cars colliding. One of them got out. The other one, we tried to help out before it caught on fire. He couldnt get out. Police acknowledged the increase in violence. They are working with prevention teams. There have been 52 homicides this year. There were 49 killings at this time last year. Police in union city are investigating a shooting at a party. Police say officers responded to a call of shots fired on early sunday morning. A man and a woman had gunshot wounds. Both were said to be in good condition. One person has been arrested. Motive is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call union city police. Another Police Union Says they are concerned about a spike in violent crime. New numbers for july show a 50 increase in july compared to this time last year. Robbery, assault, or glory and shoplifting have seen a big increase in the city. Police in san mateo released a new photo of a man suspected of assaulting a woman in her 60s. The assault happened near south El Camino Real and ninth avenue. The man is allegedly homeless, wearing a red lifeguard sweatshirt, riding a bike around the time of the attack. Investigators have found the sweatshirt and the bike. Investigators are asking for anyone with information to please give them a call. The family and friends of miles hall, a man who was killed by Walnut Creek Police in june last year, are demanding Mental Health services. His family says Walnut Creek Police shot him while he was having a Mental Health crisis. Police say they tried to use beanbags to deescalate the situation, but he ran towards the Police Holding a metal pole. Supporters say Mental Health services are needed to help people in crisis. They say they will keep protesting until that happens. It is important that it keeps going. If we dont keep doing something, nothing is going to change. More people will keep dying. I think it is because of covid that we have been able to protest. There is no obligation to be in places for school or work. During a fouryear period, he was called on multiple times. Previous calls were handled as Mental Health issues. A 17yearold boy was shot to death after a shooting at a block party in washington, d. C. Neighbors heard the gunshots early yesterday morning. They say one offduty Police Officer was injured, is right now fighting for her life. 19 other people were also hurt. The police are reportedly searching for several shooters. They say that block parties are major concern during the pandemic. In denver, colorado nine people were hurt at a shooting at a local park. A family was gathering when someone drove by and started shooting. Officials say some of the victims are young. We do not know their ages yet. None of the injuries appear to be lifethreatening. It was another weekend of violent protests on the streets of portland. Police in riot gear clashed with protesters for several hours late last night. That confrontation came one night after violent protesters threw rocks and bottles at protesters and set up a Police Union Building on fire. They say they have no plans until leaving until the violence comes to an end. You see the violence that continued when we were there and the violence has continued, even though we shifted our resources. Now, they directed their violence towards the local police there. Federal agents arrived in response to the protest in late may after the death of george floyd. Federal and local authorities have made 500 arrests during the two months of demonstrations. Demonstrators Scientists Say there has been a large quake in the area. Now, the 5. 1 earthquake hit sunday morning, centered 50 miles of winston, salem. The quake caused minor damage across north carolina. There are no reports of any injuries. A Southern California church is defying a court order to stop Holding Indoor services. The pastor led a 9 00 a. M. Service in Newberry Park in Ventura County yesterday. Last week, a judge issued a restraining order, banning the church from Holding Services indoors. Everyone is sick of it. They are not going to take our church. There is a higher rate of suicide when you close churches. Standing before two dozen worshipers, not wearinmask, most of the congregation was not wearing a mask or standing 6 feet apart. The time is 5 50. In Southern California, someone in Hermosa Beach is handing out a ticket to you if you are not wearing a face mask. For private offices started handing out fines over the weekend, trying to help enforce the mask mandate. Violators are fined 100 for the first offense, 200 for the second, 500 for each offense after that within a oneyear period. I think it is a deterrent.
