Class Vincent Polanco is mourning the death of his father, gilbert, a san quentin prison guard, first admitted to the hospital in july, after contracting the coronavirus. Then on life support. Sergeant Gilbert Polanco died at Kaiser Santa Teresa at 5 00 sunday morning. Covid19 is a real thing. It takes peoples lives away, and my dad is one of those people, and he did not need to go at the age he was at. Reporter at 55 years old, vincents father gilbert, a san jose native, had wanted to become a prison guard after passing san quentin on a ferry ride in middle school. And he saw one of the guards there as a kid, and he waved at my dad, he literally waved at my dad, and he, like, theres all of these kids, too, but my dad knew that this man waved at him. Reporter after serving in the army and national guard, he worked at san quentin for 30 years. A crisis created after the Corrections Department brought in untested inmates from a prison in chino, where there had been an outbreak. Visible sent believe father may have caught the virus while moving inmates. I dont think it was done correctly, personally. As a son, dont think it was done correctly, because they were kind of rushing it, pushing people. I dont think the inmates shroud ever moved. A statement said that sergeant Gilbert Polanco demonstrated unwavering e officer, work hearing s a front line every day during this devastating pandemic. The statement went on to say that his memory is carried on in the hearts of the men and women who continue to battle the virus at san quentin. His memory also lives on in his children. Its a gift that i kid not realize that it has been a gift for me, and ive been very lucky to have a father like i do. And Corrections Department secretary rob diaz also issued a statement expressing the departments sorrow, and said the sergeants dedication to Public Service will not be forgotten. Julie . Death row inmate pedro arias died today at an outside hospital from what appears to be complications related to covid19. He had been on death row since march of 1990. More than 2200 san quentin inmates have become infected with the virus since the outbreak quentin has 157 active cases. 25 inmates have now died from covid19. California now has nearly 560,000 cases of coronavirus, and more than 10,300 people have died. There is some good news. State hospitalizations dropped today for the 6th straight day. There are currently 5600 people being treated for the coronavirus around california. Here in the bay area, there are nearly 62 though cases, and 912 people have died. U. C. Santa cruz and Santa Cruz County are working together. The diagnostic lab at the University Said they bought new test equipment after getting roughly 800,000 from the county under the federal relief bill. The lab says the additional equipment is expected to boost their Testing Capacity to up to 800 tests per day over the course of several months. The county says the partnership will form the backbone of the countys Coronavirus Response efforts. The city of santa clara is setting up a new free testing site this week at federal park library. This is an appointment only site, and it started taking appointments today. Right now, they have two days scheduled in august and two more days in september. Anyone can be tested, and there are no requirements for testing criteria or immigration status. The city says test results should take three to seven days. The School Year Starts tomorrow in oakland, but there are still a lot of questions tonight from parents, students, and teachers. The district is moving forward with Distance Learning, but still negotiating with teachers about how exactly that will work. Greg is here now with more. Greg . Julian, those negotiations did continue throughout the day today, but still no resolution. One teacher tells us that what they are waiting for is an agreement on what they call a memorandum of understanding, which will lay out their dayto day duties, and responsibilities. This is what classrooms will look like monday, as School Begins if oakland. Empty, devoid of the usual enthusiasm on the first day of school. There is currently no formal plan in place regarding what the die will look like for students and teachers. One teacher said it is like being asked to play the super bowl with new game planning. Parents and students share that anxiety about the unknown. Im definitely nervous, and i dont really know what to expect. It could either go well, or really bad, i think. It has been pretty stressful. I mean, its very hard to know how the year is going to look. Reporter students will be behind screens from home, as the district kicks off what is being called the strong start program. But one middle School Teacher says neil have only 30 minutes of instruction daily the first week, with the future being unknown. The Teachers Union and district are trying to iron out a myriad of issues, including online responsibilities and safety during an eventual return to the classroom. Two sticking points, the unions desire to have substitutes assist teachers by groups. And also we need to have a flexible schedule for our educators, who have who are caretakers, who have families, so that we are able to have to provide the best quality instruction under these circumstances. Reporter oaklands superintendent has released a welcome back letter, say we go continue to work hard with our labor partners to reach an agreement about exactly what Distance Learning will look like, and we look forward to reaching a deal. Andrea dooley is both parent and president of a Parent Teacher Student Group who hosted a zoom call sunday that filled up after 100 anxious parents locked in. They just a lot of questions. They want reassurance that their kids are going to be meeting teachers, learning something. And that, of course, is everyones concern. And part of the learning process is making sure that all of the students have access to the technology that they need. Now, the district did strike a deal with several technology companies, and they do plan on distributing some chrome books, starting on tuesday, but unfortunately that does mean some students are not going to have the tools that they need as School Begins. President trump is getting a lot of criticism after bypassing congress and signing four executive orders, aimed at coronavirus relief. Democrats, even some republicans, say yesterdays move by the president was unconstitutional. The executive orders defer payroll taxes and student loans, extend Unemployment Benefits, and place a moratorium on evictions. It was unconstitutional slop. While it has the illusion of saying were going to have a moratorium on evictions, it says im going to ask the forecasts in charge to study if that is feasible. If the democrats want to challenge us in court and hold up Unemployment Benefits to those hard working americans that are out of a job because of covid, theyre going to have a lot of explaining to do. In june of last year, the family of miles hall called police saying she 23yearold man was having a mental crisis and threatened them with a poll. Police say they arrived on the scene and fired bean bags to try to defuse the situation, put they said that hall ran towards the officers with the metal pole, so officers opened fire. Protesters say they are calling for more Mental Health help for those in crisis. If Things County change, more people will die. The demonstrations started off more than two months ago following the killing of george floyd in minneapolis. Millions of people across the country took too the streets, demanding an end to racial inequality and police brutality. However, some of the protesters have turned to violence. The first happened last night at about 6 00. A man was shot and killed at a bus stop on lake shore avenue and mandana boulevard, and then just after 10 00, a man was shot on 72nd avenue near international boulevard. Another person was wounded and taken to the hospital. And this morning, at about 12 20, a man was fatally shot inside a crashed car on holly avenue if east oakland. The car then caught fire. A neighbor was inside his home watching tv when he says he heard the commotion. I heard a loud boom, some gunshots first, and then a loud screech and some hits, like cars hitting, colliding. Police acknowledged the uptick in violence and say they are working with violence prevention teams and trying to over gang members. Police say there have been 52 homicides in oakland so far this year. There were 49 killing it is oakland at this time last year. In san leandro, the police union said it is concerned about a spike in Violent Crime there.
