Also this morning, police in berkeley searching for people who robbed a drugstore and run over up a Police Officers foot. This happened at the cvs store near chuck street. The suspects got away in a gray car, running over the officers foot, during the getaway. And police will give us an update on the robbery and injury to that officer. The number of hospitalizations in San Francisco setting a new record high at 109 per day. Ktvus christian tells us the city will now open and overflow location to treat non coronavirus patients if there is no room in hospitals. In a matter of weeks San Franciscos hot hospitalization rates have skyrocketed, enough to put the city on the states watch list. Oaklands School Year Starts in less than two weeks, but 25,000 new lab tests that the district ordered to help students with district learning apparently wont be ready in time. Ktvus rob roth spoke with one father about what this means for his family. Reporter hoping to get a laptop computer from the Unified School District for his daughter, nvidia. She is about to enter the third grade at Fairview Elementary school and has a learning disability. My concern is that she might not be wellequipped, like the other kids. And i would like her to engage, like the other kids, and be able to do it as a class, as a unit. He says he was unable to get a temporary computer for the district from last spring, because his physical disability made it too hard for him to stand in line. But when he received word, thursday, they do have a laptop for his daughter. Until you actually see when manifested, i will just cross my fingers. With Oaklands School year starting with Distance Learning in 11 days, on august 10th, the district announced that 25,000 new laptops on order were delayed because of the pandemic and want be programmed and ready for students until september. Oakland is one of the earliest starting districts for a district our size, and we are not prepared, so that makes it worse. The district is trying to identify the approximately 2000 students whose only temporary computers and say, every child should have one during the first week of class. In santa clara county, some schools are applying for a waiver that could allow for in person instruction. The bowman school, like palo alto, or one of dozens who have started the process. The governor announced the process lacks week which only applies to elementary schools, and managed on a county level. But parents say private schools, like bowman, have an unfair advantage. So, we are worried that private schools and those schools on the west side, which have more resources, will be able to open were quickly, whereas others will have sort of a secondclass education. Santa clara county says it is working with the office of education to make sure that doesnt happen, but it is still early in the process, and the county says parents, labor groups, and other Health Officials will all have a say. In the sojourn project it is the longest running justice education and Outreach Program of its kind. Middle school and High School Students spend a week in classrooms at washington, d. C. , and in the deep south, learning about the fight for racial justice. The project introduces them to leaders of the civil rights movement, including the late congressman, john lewis. It is very, very effective. It is fine a new generation of leaders, a new generation of young people, they will find a way to make a contribution. Now, before he died, congressman lewis was active with the sojourn project, speaking to more than 5000 students in the program over the years. John lewis met 90 of our groups, gave every group 2 hours of his time. I had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of private time with him. Whenever i saw him, he would greet me and say just, my brother, my friend. And you cant help being a different person around the are of john lewis. The sojourn project says its greatest hope is that young people will realize they can stand up to injustice, just like congressman john lewis did. I think he has certainly inspired many.
