Happening right now, we want to go to our live special coverage of the funeral this morning of congressman, john lewis, at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in atlanta, georgia. You are there live in the church. This is a fox news special report. Reporting in washington, im mil coverage of the farewell, the celebration of life to congressman, john lewis of georgia. A longtime civil rights icon, and also a longtime member of the house of representatives. The Ebenezer Baptist church, a Historic Church in atlanta, georgia. We have seen a range of dignitaries filing into the church over the past 45 minutes or so. We expect this celebration of life to get going here, any moment now. He will be eulogized by the 44th president of the United States, barack obama there will also be greetings, messages from former president s, bill clinton, and george w. Bush, attributed to the life and times of john lewis, has really been quite moving. It has gone from alabama to our nations capitol. Now to atlanta for his ultimate im going. Im joined by two special guests this morning, professor Jason Anthony nichols of the university of maryland, and faith morris from the National Civil rights museum. Good morning to both of you. Morning. I am wondering, your thoughts this morning on this farewell to john lewis. We dont have realty here in the United States, but this farewell to john lewis has really been something to watch, on both sides of the political spectrum. It really has. And john lewis was so important, because he was the last great symbol of our moral conscience here in the United States. He was someone who fought for the american ideals of freedom, justice, and equality. Somebody who always reminded us we must be motivated by love, and not distracted by hate and have to carry that heavy burden. It would be interesting to see where we go as a nation, if we remember what he stood for, and what he reminded us of. In his final letter to the american people, reminding us to be motivated by love, and to continue on the path that we are going on. We also have to remember all of the great things that he did, including the establishment of the National Museum of African American History Museum and culture. I also think that there are three ways we can really honor the legacy of john lewis. Number one is voting. We have to vote. We have to remember and still fight against police brutality. Because when john lewis had his skull fractured on the Edmund Pettis bridge, it wasnt by random thugs, it was by law enforcement. So we still have to fight the same battles that he has fought. And the other thing i would say, is justice. That was something he talks about in his last speech. One quote from john lewis that i was loved, is that he says that, nothing can stop the power of a committed and determined people to make a difference in society. And that is one of the things that we have to remember. We have to unite ourselves, rather than stay divided. You made reference tothe farewell letter that lewis wrote that was published in todays new york times. He says, though i may not be here with you, i urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. I wonder if you can touch on the significance of it being at the Ebenezer Baptist church third and i know you have met john lewis, so your thoughts and him today . Well, you know, to say a final goodbye to john lewis, today, of course, he will be in our hearts. We will forever remember what he has done. He lived his life in a way that he hope we all would, that we would hopefully remember exactly what he stood for. To have him at Ebenezer Baptist church, how historic that church is, certainly, dr. Kings church, and dr. King was his mentor. Dr. King stood sidebyside with dr. King, in trying to get some very serious work done. When we look at his last time that he went to alabama for walking across the Edmund Pettis bridge, and to have us in march, as he knew what his fate was. But to have us in march to really relive what happened, 55 years ago, and to understand that that fight is still a fight we are trying to move through, now to consider what john lewis did through his lifetime. He started in his 20s. And, he kept to the fight through his 80s. He never gave that fight. So, for him to be at this church that has memorialized so many of our greats, that stands for the movement, to have his final service to be there. It is certainly symbolic. But one of the things that john lewis absolutely impressed upon us, and he impressed so much upon us, because he did so many things, when he was in congress. That he know that being a legislator was the way he could get some important work done. And he absolutely did. He has put something on our hearts, you know, as we go through november and determine with the leadership will be as we move forward. Anyone who doesnt understand his platform, his stance on voting, and what folks did and died for, and he almost died for we know that it will stand fast with us. You have been watching a number of dignitaries file into the Ebenezer Baptist church. Bush, and his wife, lora. President clinton, nancy pelosi , there as well. So really a whos who of the political class, here across our great nation. Jason anthony, i am wondering, as someone who teaches at the university of maryland, john lewiss example for students who may be teaching, today. Well, i use not only john lewis, but all the people that accompanied him. Some are not as harrowed as john lewis, like diane nash, and many African American women who sacrificed during the civil rights movement. But i remind them that real change usually, comes from youth. Its really young people that stand up, and john lewis, as was earlier stated from a counterpart, with somebody who fought his entire life. He began when he was younger, he had the energy, and they can spend their times in their dorm room playing video games, or they can go out and actually make change in their communities. And actually devote themselves to something. And not only does that enrich the community, it enriches youth. It is something that feeds your life, your soul, it gives you purpose. And i think that thats something that john lewis realized, when he was out there on the freedom rides, he found something he was willing to give his life for. He was willing to give his life for peace. He was willing to give his life for justice and he was willing to give his life for equity, to all people. Jason anthony, thank you very much. The reverend is doing the call to celebration and welcome. Lets listen. O death, where is your sting . O grave, where is your victory . Thanks be unto god who gives us to victory. Thanks be unto god, who gave John Robert Lewis the victory, through jesus christ, our lord and liberator. Let all the children of god say amen. You are in a baptist church, sent letter. Amen. Amen. You may be seated. God bless you my sisters and brothers. You, who sit in the same sanctuary, and those who join us on our church lifestream, or by television, god bless you and welcome you to Ebenezer Baptist church, spiritual home of Martin Luther king jr. Spiritual home of John Robert Lewis. Americas freedom church. Rewell our friend these difficult days that have even made grieving more challenging. At a time when we would find comfort in embracing one another, love compels us to socially distance from one another. But make no mistake, we are together, in principle, even if not in proximity. We may not all be in the same room, but we are on the same page. And we are in touch with the same spirit. We love John Robert Lewis [ applause ] come on, give god praise come on, let the nation celebrate [ applause ] let the angels rejoice [ applause ] john lewis. John lewis [ applause ] let me just offer this. We praise god for john lewis. And as we gather in this house of god, we are reminded, that as a teenager, he actually wrestled with the call to ministry. A farmboy, he used to preach to the chickens. I guess you have to start somewhere. At age 16, he preached what we baptists call his trail sermon, in a Little Country church. But as his life took shape, instead of preaching sermons, he became one. He became a living, walking sermon about truth telling and justice making, and the earth. He loved america until america learned how to love him back. We celebratelewis. [ applause ] at a time when there is so much going on, in our world, the new cycle moves at a dizzying pace. Yet, for the last several days, it is as if time stood still, while the nation takes its time to remember him. And i arise simply to ask, in this call to celebration, what is it that has summoned us here . And caused us to slow down, to linger for a little while, with so much swirling around it . We are summoned here, because in a moment, when there are some in high office, who are much better at division than vision, cannot lead us, so they seek to divide us, in a moment, when there is so much political cynicism and narcissism that masquerades as patriotism, here lies a true american patriot, who risked his life and limb for the hope and the promise, we celebrate john lewis beaten and battered, never fettered, on a bridge in selma, he stared down bigotry and brutality into urinary, and tyranny, he received a spiritual power, born of suffering, a moral audacity that transcended, and called upon the human law to work closely align itself with a law of love it howard thurman, said vastly created. That the ancestors of john lewis met a man named jesus in alabama and georgia, and mississippi, and john lewis received that faith and took it with him across that bridge in selma, and every other bridge. We have come to celebrate john lewis and so, let us be clear. When president Lyndon Baines johnson picked up his pen to sign the Voting Rights bill into law, what he etched in ink had already been sanctioned by blood. The blood of the martyrs. The blood of two and an African American who are murdered in mississippi. The blood of john lewis, we celebrate john lewis. He was wounded for americas transgressions. Bruised for our iniquities. Chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes, we are healed. So, lets remember him, today, and lets recommit tomorrow to standing together and fighting together, and voting together, and standing up on behalf of truth and righteousness, together we will get through this, together save the soul of our democracy, together lets worship the lord. Lets worship the lord, together. Thank god for John Robert Lewis. Let the nation say amen. And let the angels rejoice. Good morning. I will be coming from the 23rd number of psalms. The lord is my shepherd, i shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul, elitist me in the path of righteousness, for his namesake. Yay though through the shadows of death do i walk i will fear no evil. For thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou prepares to table for me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anoint it to my head with oil, my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, all of the days of my life, and i will dwell in the house of the lord, forever. Thank you. Good morning. I will be reading first chronicles 13 chapter. If i could speak all the languages of earth and of angels but did not love others, i would be a noisy gong or a clanging single bowl. If i had the gift of prophecy, and if i understood all of gods secret plans and presented all knowledge, and if i had such faith they could move mountains but did not love others, i would be nothing. If i gave everything i had to the poor and sacrificed my body, i could boast about it. But if i did not love others, i would have gained nothing. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful , or proud, or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, hopeful, enduring through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in an unknown language and special knowledge, will become useless. But love will last forever. Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture. But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. When i was a child, i spoke and thought and reasoned, as a child. But when i grew up, i put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror. But then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that i know now is partial and incomplete but then i will know everything, completely. Just as god now knows me, completely. Three things will last forever. Faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love. Thank you. [ applause ] good morning. While we know that death is the great equalizer, we all recognize that each persons experience with it is different. And so, i want to extendcondole siblings of john lewis, the entire lewis family, on behalf of the entire king family, including my on christine, my dads only living sibling who would be here, but for covid19. But rest assured, she is viewing us on television as we speak. Let us pray. Great and mighty god, who is the creator of us all and sustainer of all things, we invoke you on this morning. We welcome you, holy spirit, into this place. We humbly look to you in this hour for wisdom and strength and comfort. As we celebrate the home going of your son and servant, congressman John Robert Lewis. Please, dear father, comfort this family and grant them a piece of god that passes all understanding. Surround them with your love. In the words of your servant, Martin Luther king jr. , reminded us that death is not a period that ends this great sentence of life, but a, which punctuates it to a lofty and higher significance. Help us, o god, to grasp that truth and see the magnitude of this moment. Not merely as the death of a great soul, but as a divine message that says to each and every one of us on this earth, be still and know that i am god. Hear me, and heed my message in this hour. That love, even for an enemy is the only way to transform this world into a true brother and sisterhood. We thank you, god, for the life and legacy of congressman john lewis, who showed us a more Excellent Way of life. We thank you for honoring us with his presence, and allowing our lives to intersect with his life. Be with his family. Be with those who struggle with him in that movement. And know that he continues to live on in and through each and every one of them, and through each and every one of us. We praise you, o god, for this nonviolent warrior, who fought for true peace, which daddy taught us, is not merely the absence of tension, but the presence of justice. As we honor the life of congressman john lewis, who shed blood on that Edmund Pettis bridge, that we might have the right to vote, grant that we never again take that right for granted, and that we exercise it, no matter what. And that we never again tamper with that right. Overtake in this hour our congress, that they might restore Voting Rights, protections, in our nation. As we honor the life of this nonviolent warrior, who embodied the very spirit of christ and showed us that we have the spiritual power to resist injustice and evil and hatred, and vitriol, with the force of love interest, we are attorney great will, o god, that he lived among us for fourscore years and demonstrated on that bridge that physical force is no match for soul force. Grant us the capacity to follow his example to fight injustice, without bitterness and hostility toward but, with a righteous indignation. Oh god, as elijah asked for a double portion of elijahs anointing, as he transitioned, let a double portion of what john lewis life was about, fall on us in this hour, so that we can continue to get in good trouble you anoint us with a double portion in this generation to get into good trouble until there is radical reform in policing in our nation. Anoint us a double portion to get into good trouble until Voter Suppression is no longer a part of our body politic. Encourage us to get into good trouble until there is an agreeable distribution of wealth in this nation, until everyone has a livable wage and Affordable Housing and good healthcare. Anoint us, o god, with a double portion to get into good trouble until all labor is treated with dignity. Grant us, o father, a double portion to get into good trouble, until the school to prison pipeline is nonexistent in this nation, that every child gets an education. Oh god, bless us with a double portion until White Supremacy and all practices and behavior no longer. Grant us a double portion, god, to get into good trouble until this nation truly becomes a compassionate nation. Because as daddy reminded us, ultimately, a great nation is a compassionate nation. Grant us, god, a double portion of anointing to get into good trouble until black in this world. And black lives have equitable representation, power and influence, in every arena. Grant us, finally, father god, that a double portion to get into good trouble, and to love becomes the way we live, the way we lead, the way we legislate, and until justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness, like a mighty stream, thank you oh, god, for this great man, who lived among us. Who now joins the great cloud of freedom fighters. And lord, and his legacy and we will continue to get into breath to it is in the matchless and stic of jesus the christ, that i do pray, and all the people of god sit together, amen. You may build great cathedrals large or small you may conquer all the failures of your past but only what you do for christ will last you may seek earthly power wealth, and fame and the world might be impressed by your great name glories of this lifepassed bu you do for christ will last remember only what you do for christ will last remember, only, only, only what you do for christ will, only what you do will be counted only what you do for christ will last only what you do for christ will last remember, only what you do for christ will last only what you do will be counted in the end, only what you, what you do for christ its going to last its going to last, yeah only what you do, only what you do for christ will last only what you do for christ will last, yeah , let the church say amen. This is john lewiss favorite poem. Out of the night that covers me, like as a pit from pole to pole, i think whatever god may be for my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance, i have not winced nor client cried aloud under the bludgeonings or of the shade. And yet, menace of the years finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, how charged punishment this world, i am the master of my fate, i am the captain of my soul. John lewis was my hero and my friend. Lets honor him by getting in good trouble. [ applause ] only the unconquerable spirit and the magnanimous soul of john lewis could summon all of us together in this place, at this time. Only three living american president s to come to this house of god. [ applause ] to celebrate his life. [ applause ] and we are grateful that all of them are here. The honorable george w. Bush. [ applause ] who was president the last time we were authorized the Voting Rights act. [ applause ] the honorable William Jefferson clinton. [ applause ] and in just a little while, well hear from the honorable barack obama. [ applause ] but the program will proceed as printed. President bush, president clinton, speaker of the house, nancy pelosi. [ applause ] and and another living saint among us, teacher and activists , the reverend, james lawson. [ applause ] good morning. Distinguished guests, john miles, lewis, family and friends , lauren, i thank you for inviting us to be here, today. Johns story began on a tiny farm in troy, alabama. A place so small, he said you could barely find it on the map. The doctor talked about the chickens. I did a little research. Every morning, he would rise before the sun to tend to the flock of chickens. He loved those chickens. Already called to be a minister who took care of others, he fed them and tended to their every need. Even their spiritual ones. For john, he baptized, married, and preached them. When his parents claimed one for family supper, john refused to eat one of his flock. Going hungry was his first act of nonviolent protest. He also noted in later years that his first congregation of chickens listened to him more closely than some of his colleagues in congress. John also thought the chickens were just a little more productive. At least they produced eggs, he said. From troy to the citizens of nashville, to the freedom rides to the march on washington, from freedom summer, john lewis always looked outward, not inward. He always thought of others. He always believed in preaching the gospel. In word and in deed. Insisting that hate and fear had to be answered with love and hope. John lewis believed in the lord. He believed in humanity. And he believed in america. He has been called an american saint. A believer, willing to give up everything, even life itself, to bear witness to the truth that drove him all his life. That we could build a world of peace, justice, dignity, harmony, and love. And the first crucial step on that journey was the recognition that all people are born in the image of god and carry a spark of the divine within them. Lora and i were privileged to see the spark in john up close. We worked with him to bring the National Museum of African American history and culture to the washington mall. He was instrumental in the unsolved civil rights crime act, which i signed, to seek resolution in cases where justice had been too long denied. And we will never forget joining him in alabama for the 50th anniversary of his march across the Edmund Pettis bridge where we got to watch president barack obama thank john as one of his heroes. [ applause ] there is a story in the scooters that meant a lot to john. In the hebrew bible, the lord is looking for a profit. Who will it end, god wonders, and isaiah answers, here am i, send me. He took up the work of the lord through all his days. His lessons for us is that we must keep ourselves open, open to hearing the call of love. The call of service, and the call john and i had our america joh fought for, and the america i believe in, differences of opinion are inevitable elements and evidence of democracy in action. [ applause ] we the people, including congressmen and president s, can have differing views on how to protect our union while sharing the conviction that our nation, however flawed, is at heart, a good and noble one. We live in a better country today because of john lewis. And, his abiding faith in the power of god. And the power of democracy. And in the power of love, to lift us all to a higher ground. The story that began in troy is not enhere, today. Nor is the work. John lewis lives forever at his fathers house, and he will live forever in the hearts of americans, who act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with their god. May the flights of angels see john lewis to his rest, and may god bless the country he loves to love. [ applause ] [ applause ] [ applause ] thank you, very much. First, i thank john myers and the lewis family, and johns staff for a chance to say a few words. About a man i loved for a long time. I am grateful, pastor, to say it. In ebenezer. A holy place, sanctified by both the faith and the of those, who have worshiped, here. I thank my friend, reverend bernice king, who stood by my side and gave a fascinating sermon, and one of the most challenging prayers of my life. I thank president and mrs. Bush, president obama, speaker pelosi, thank you, and representative hoyer, and representative clyburn. Who i really thank for, with the stroke of a hand, ending an interfamily fight within our party. Proving that piece is needed by everyone. Thank you, you have faced more than a fair share of challenges in these last few months, and you have faced them with candor and dignity and honor. And i thank you for your leadership. [ applause ] i must say, for a fellow who got his start speaking to chickens, john has gotten a pretty finally organized and orchestrated and deeply deserved sendoff this last week. His home going has been something to behold. [ applause ] i think its importantl of u remembered that he was, after all, a human being. And then like all other humans, born with strengths, that he made the most of, when many dont. Born with weaknesses that he worked hard to beat down, when many cant. It made him more interesting, and it made him, in my mind, even greater. 20 years ago, we celebrated the 35th anniversary of the selma march, and we walked together, along with caretta, and many others from the movement, who are no longer with us. We are grateful for andy young and reverend who survive. But, on that day, i got him to replay for me a story he told me when we first met, back in the 1970s. And i said, you know, i was just an aspiring whatever, politician, and he was already a legend. So i said john, what is the closest you came to getting killed doing it . And he said well once, we were at a demonstration, and i got knocked down on the ground, and people were getting beat up pretty bad. And all a sudden, i looked up and there was a man holding a long heavy piece of pipe, and he lifted it and was clearly going to bring it down on my skull. And at the very last second, i turned my neck away, and the crowd pushed him a bit. A couple of seconds later, i could not believe it, i was still alive. I think its important to remember that. First, he cut he was a quick thinker. Second, because he was here on a mission that was bigger than personal ambition. Things like that sometimes just happen, but usually they dont. I think three things happened to john lewis before we became friends that made him who he was. First, the famous story of john with his cousins and siblings, holding his aunts hands, more than a dozen of them running around a little wooden house, as the wind threatened to blow it down. Went to the place where the house was rising, and all those tiny bodies trying to weigh it down. I think he learned something about the power of working together. Something that was more powerful than any instruction. Second, nearly 20 years later, when he was 23, the youngest speaker, and the last speaker that the march on washington. Then he gave a great speech, urging people to take to the streets across the south, to see the chance to finally end racism, and he listened to people he knew. We are trying to get converts, not more adversaries. Just three years later, he lost the leadership to carmichael. Because he said, you know, i would really, it was a pretty good job for a guy that young. To come from troy, alabama. It must have been painful to lose, but, he showed as a young man, there are some things that you cannot do to hang on to a position. Because if you do them, you wont be who you are, anymore. And i say there were two or three years there, where the movement went a little bit towards stokely, but in the end, john lewis prevailed. We are here today, because he had the kind of character he should when he lost an election. [ applause ] then there was bloody sunday. He figured he might get arrested. And this is really important, for all the things we believe about john lewis, he had a really good mind. And how can i every single moment . So,montgomery. He wants to get across the bridge. What do we remember. He had a trenchcoat and a backpack. People dont think its a big deal, but there werent many backpacks back then. But john put an apple an orange, toothbrush, toothpaste, to take care of himself, because he thought he would get arrested. One, the autobiography of a roman catholic, who was the son of artists making an astonishing personal transformation. What is a young guy who is a get, i think he figured that if thomas could find his way and keep his faith , john lewis could too. And so we honor our friend for his faith and for living his faith. Which the scriptures says is a thing hoped for, john lewis was a walking rebuke to people, who thought well, not there yet, we have been working a long time, isnt it time to bag it . He kept moving. He hoped for and imagined and worked and moved for his beloved community. He took a savage beating on more than one day. And he lost that backpack on bloody sunday. Nobody knows what happened to it. Maybe someday someone will be stricken with conscience and give some of it back. We honor that memory today, because as a child, he learned to walk with the wind. To march with others to save a tiny house. Because he was a young man, he challenged others to join him, with love and dignity, to hold americas house down and open the doors of america to all its people. We honor him, because on the third attempt, john and his comrades showed that sometimes you have to walk into the wind, along with with it. As he crossed the bridge and marched into montgomery, no matter what, john always kept walking to reach the beloved community. He got into a lot of trouble along the way, but lets not forget, he also developed an absolutely uncanny ability to heal troubled waters. When he could have been angry to cancel his adversaries, he tried to get converts instead. The open hand was better than clenched fists. He lived by the faith and promise of st. Paul, let us not grow weary in doing good. For in due season we will be rewarded. He never lost heart. He fought a good fight, kept the faith. But, we got our last letter today in the pages of the new york times. Keep moving. Keep moving. 20 years ago, when i came here after the selma march to a big dinner honoring john, you had a big afro. And it was really pretty. And your daddy was giving you grief about it, and i said john, lets not get old tall so soon. If i had hair like that, id and someone asked me that night i had many friends in atlanta if i could give you one thing, if god said your time is up. You got to go home im not giving you three wishes. One thing, what would it be . I said, i would infect every american with whatever it was,
