But the board does plan on voting on it at some point today. The board will decide whether or not to find people and businesses who dont follow the county Health Orders like not wearing mass, gathering in big groups and not maintaining distance among other things. County officials have also asked for a hotline to be set up for people to report violations. If it is not corrected, then they can be fined. Looking at the screen, this is what the fine breakdown would look like. People can get 100 tickets for the first violation, 200 for the second, and 500 for each additional violation. The cost for businesses is hyper 250 for the first violation. 500 for the second. And 1000 for each additional violation. The law will need 4 5 vote to go into effect in my commitment, the board does planned to vote on it some point today. And a five alarm fire means that every single firehouse in the city has been woken up. Host of the Fire Department resources are down at this fire now. This will have an old impact on the citys Fire Department. Definitely. Again, as you have been reporting on this and we are watching now, it shows no signs of dissipating. Straight back to breaking news we brought you from San Francisco minutes go. A large fire is burning in the area of 13th and folsom. This is video given to us by a video. This video shows thick black smoke rising up into the air and a huge fire burning below their in at least one building on the ground. This is burning very close to the 80 onetoone interchange. Its affecting traffic on the city streets and traffic on the bay bridge. Beginning to see a backup on the bay bridge because people coming out of the tunnel can see the thick black smoke rising and they hit their brakes. This is very close to 80 and onetoone leading to the bay bridge. If youre listening to me and you are trying to get into San Francisco, dont use the bay bridge. Its backing up and they will put the metering lights on pretty soon if they havent already. This fire is burning pretty hot right now so you can see that the entire suspension span of the bridge is infected affected. Northbound onetoone is slowing down like an afternoon commute. Its in this area here with a five alarm fire that means that engine and Truck Companies from all over San Francisco on the scene and crews setting up with life pictures. We really have these five alarm fires and pretty soon and pretty soon it will be an all day cleanup. Truck we dont know what building and exactly is what on fire. And a couple of businesses in the air. Very densely populated area of San Francisco like most areas of the city are. I have been monitoring the San FranciscoFire Department twitter account. They sent out a warning that live wires are down so im sure pg e is arriving at the scene as well. Heres another great look at whats happening here. We have been able to set up a picture live on the ground. A lot more of the same. This camera is on the ground very close to the fire thats burning. We see emergency vehicles and ambulances there was light on the front of it with thick dark smoke continued to pour out of the top of the building. Not sure how many stories it is. Fire crews are on scene and getting water on this fire. We really have not seen much change in its intensity as we have been monitoring it. Im trying to look at this little monitor i have work it looks like there might be lighter or whiter smoke coming from the fire. Typically, that means that crews are getting water on the flames. If you look on the left of your screen, you see the big area ladder thats up with 1000 gallons per minute of water coming in on the fire. They have several of these surrounding the building and thats why they need so many resources. The Fire Department has been practicing in San Francisco at fighting these kinds of fires. They have master streams on the fire and they do have a lot of resources here. In the foreground, you see medics just in case anyone is injured. We dont know if anyone was inside the building but definitely this is a live picture of the thick black smoke. That means they are only getting water part of the fire and it is still burning. You have to wonder, you know, if and how really the covid19 pandemic situation is affecting the work that these firefighters do every day. By our account, this is the first major fire we have seen in San Francisco since the pandemic began. You have to wonder if they are working shoulder to shoulder as they usually do or if they have to take measures to protect their own health while fighting this huge fire. We are zooming in and there is some good streams of water being put on this fire thats burning. Again its near the as to what buildings may be effected here . We are just giving street addresses but not specifics on the actual businesses. On the building on right, i think it says sherwinwilliams. Chip, if youre hearing me, push into the right of that building there and you can see it. To give you reference, there is the Sherman Williams paint building which is near south van ness. I am deducing that its the building behind it. Theres a billboard on top of it that you see from the freeway. There are the master streams on the left and right on the very left, where it says 50 Miles Per Hour in the clouds, that is the central freeway. In this area obviously visible. This is really almost the center of San Francisco when it comes to the downtown area. Visible from almost everywhere. Now we know that that building is there and we will get an exact building for you in a moment. Now we are hearing that there may be multiple buildings involved here. San francisco fire saying 150 firefighters are on scene. Its a commercial structure so it doesnt look like residential is affected. But flames have spread to several buildings. This fire grew very quickly. It went from two to five alarms in just a few minutes. The Fire Department trying to keep the public updated and we will highlight the only bit of good news and that is so far, no injuries reported. We are trying to find out exactly which buildings are burning and how the fire started. Thats the secondary concern, the how work right now its the task of protecting people and property in trying to make sure that these flames dont spread to other buildings and businesses and homes in the air. We have a live camera on the ground and we can see officers taping off the area and keeping people at least a good block or more away from the fire. Five alarms. Every available San Francisco firefighter is heading to this scene. Its been months since we have seen a major fire like this. I wonder how it is being affected by the pandemic. I have to say, and i know in a minute we will talk about weather, but as we share these pictures again with the different views of the fire, we see the large smoke plume rising for a good distance into the air before it starts to dissipate. I know that we will bring in steve to talk meteorology and talk about whats happening in San Francisco weatherwise in the area of this fire. It is very key and important. Steve, you would think that the weather we have right now, the fact that it is cool and that may help with a firefight that we are seeing live. I dont think the winds are a big issue. The mood is high and its very cool. Big overcast and i dont see any guests over 11 Miles Per Hour now. That is important. And you emphasize how important how dense that there is. Businesses, buildings and neighborhoods very closely packed together and it is right next to the freeway. Thats right. For those people who did not grow up in the city or are familiar with every nook and cranny, i will throw out some Large Businesses in the area that you will probably wreck nice. This is very close to the costco. Its right by the freeway interchange and a big best buy store is there. We can clearly see the Sherwin Williams marquee on this building. We are working to learn exactly where the fire started and what buildings and businesses are affected. Its important for you to keep this in mind. Im guessing you could live in the east bay looking at your window from the Oakland Hills, you will see smoke from the fire. There is something major happening in San Francisco right now. A five alarm fire burning very close to the 80 101 interchange. Every available San Francisco firefighter is on scene here. Ground crews are giving you these live pictures. Viewers are sending us video. If you can see more of whats going on, we would accept your video and insight. But if your normal travels take you to the area of 13th and folsom, do not go. You can see in this live picture traffic wise, it is on lockdown. We have a better location for you. It came in at 13th and folsom but actually closer to south van ness and actually came in on erie street which is an alley right behind south venice. It connects folsom and south venice. The Sherman Williams paint store is 245 s. Venice avenue. Some of the buildings behind that. Is right underneath the central freeway. South venice is across the street from the bmw dealership in this area. You can see thats in this video that we took a well ago, it escalated fast. This fire went from two alarms to five very quickly. Listening to the firefighters talk to each other on their communication system, this is not under control by any means. Still an active fire burning and they will be here for a well. Definitely. The very obvious Sherwin Williams paint company come of see theres a lot of chemicals and things mixed in with the flames and the fire and the smoke and what is going in the air there. These are live pictures. That is another major concern as we watch this five alarm fire burn. I am just finding out that the Fire Department had to go into a defensive stance on this fire because of powerlines that were there that came down onto the rigs, unto the fire trucks. They had to pull back and that is giving them access problems to the main fire. They are being a little bit slower out of necessity to fighting this fire because of powerlines that came down and complicated the firefight. It came in on erie street which is a small street between folsom and south venice. You see the sherwinwilliams bill waiting at 245 s. Venice venice. Its an Industrial Area with an auto body shop back there. I was a thick black smoke still coming up. According to the firefighters on scene, they are having trouble getting to the main fire building. Theres more than one billeting involved. This certainly is. I was going to say that our photographer on the scene is walking in caring the camera. These buildings are shoulder to shoulder here. Very densely packed city block. When we did see the confirmation from San Francisco fire on the twitter account that multiple buildings are burning, essentially that is what you would expect in a setup such as this one. I will also remind people that we mentioned that you described how the firefight is changing and cruiser taking more of a defensive stance. In the previous minutes, San Francisco fire tweeted there are live powerlines down. We were able to bring you a picture of Police Officers taping off the block. Here is an intimate look at the fire and we can push in and show you a good look. Im still coming from the top of the building. Thick black smoke pouring out. A firefighter here is climbing a ladder. Its really a dramatic scene and there are so many layers of this. You have the firefight itself and then you have the weather, is that helping the firefight . Have covid19 concerns. I have yet to see two firefighters shoulder to shoulder. These men and women are fighting this raging fire, im assuming, while even more messed up and protected than they usually are. You have to think about the tasks that San Francisco fire is attempting to pull off for now. I was actually speaking with a firefighter and a spokesman offline here. Covid19 in this situation does not affect the way that firefighters are fighting this fire. This is just one of those things thats they are all in it fighting it as they normally would. You mentioned the powerlines that came down that they tweeted about. Those powerlines that came down came down on top of or very close to Fire Department equipment. They had to move the equipment out of the way and therefore they were not able to get there are trucks really close to the fire that has made it tougher to fight this fire according to the spokesman. As we have been covering this for the past 20 minutes. I would do a quick receipt in case you are joining us now and sing this huge fire burning in San Francisco or perhaps looking at the window. You can see this in the east bay and beyond. A very large fire burning in San Francisco. We have a better address for you. South venice and erie street. These are live pictures showing thick black smoke and some white smoke rising. I am not a firefighter, but after years of talking with firefighters and covering fryers like this, typically white smoke means good news. They are getting water on the flames and we have been able to show you that in other views of the same situation. Again, the fire is still very much burning in the area of south van ness and erie street. These are the pictures we were able to bring you first things to a pewter that sent them to us. A look from brother way but it tells the picture of a whole lot of active orange flame on the bottom. A very thick dark column of smoke rising straight up in the air. A minute ago, c paulson said the winds are only 11 Miles Per Hour in the area. Thats what allows the smoke home to form the way that it is. Thats why its not being blown all across the city. Its essentially just rising up. This is affecting traffic on the bay bridge. This is affecting onetoone and affecting certainly city streets in the area of south venice and erie street. And number of Large Businesses in the area. We saw Sherwin Williams and there is a couple of other big businesses, cosco etc. In the air. Were still trying to get a good read on how this fire started. But right now the number one concern and i know you have a lot of bodies in sf fire the number one concern is to protect people and property. Have you been able to learn anything about whether or not people were in the building. 7 30 am is a little early for a paint shop to open up but that does not mean that no one was inside. We have not heard any of that and have not heard if anyone was inside any buildings. Listening to radio traffic, it does seem that they are not in the building. They are fighting it defensively and surrounding the fire with water and hoping to cool it off so they can go inside. But we have not heard about anyone with injuries. It doesnt mean there arent ending but we just dont know of them right now. This is erie street between south venice and folsom. One building is the Main Building on fire but the fire was so hot that it was threatening to spread to many other buildings. You know how these buildings are done there, and a lot of Industrial Buildings in this area which was mostly industrial for a long time. Now you are beginning to see condos and apartments popping up. This is the area of San Francisco where a lot of work was done. A lot of Industrial Buildings and i think some of those buildings are still doing that work. Of course that means there are chemicals and solvents inside making it tougher to fight this fire. Thank you. We will of course keep an eye on this fire but we have to talk again about the weather situation in the city and all across the bay area. The wind is 515 Miles Per Hour in San Francisco. Distill 55 degrees and overcast. Wind is not a huge factor appeared 15 miles or hour or less is the most i have seen. We do have a big overcast with low clouds and fog and thunderstorms in the mountains. Its a summer pattern. Really it has not budged at all. Morning fog cool and sunny. 61 in san jose which had low clouds, as well. 55 in the city. Travis is at its an onshore breeze for everyone. Welcome back to mornings on 2. Its tuesday, july 28. We will get back to the breaking news that we have been covering for the past half hour. A major fires burning and south San Francisco. Its up by the lines and that means every available San Francisco firefighter is at the scene. We are told that a number of commercial buildings are now burning. We have been bringing you live pictures. Crews are putting water on the buildings that are burning. We see sick orange flames rising from the building and you can see a lot of a black smoke. The neighborhood in the air specifically at south venice and erie has impacted the traffic. The streets are blocked off. This is affecting traffic in the neighborhood and easily on the bay bridge as well. More than 100 firefighters are unseen with engines and ladder trucks. This kicked up about an hour ago. I want to bring in on the phone brian peter its my understanding you have a connection to one of buildings there thats burning now. What can you tell us . Good morning. My dad owns the building that is on fire. What is the building right now . Dizzy on that business quick or dizzy on the actual building . He owns the building and the property and we own the business. We have been in business since 1947. Tell us more about the company and what you do. We did sell Building Materials to lumber yards throughout the bay area. And there is nobody inside the building. My dad went to go to work this morning and it was already on fire. I believe its the only building that is on fire but there are many flammables in there. Wood pallets with all the material on it. Thats why there is such an excessive amount of flames going up. Firefighters could not get into the building. I was going to ask you come as the firefighters respond to a scene like this with active flames coming out of the windows and doors and heavy smoke, they dont necessarily what they are walking into. It is good to hear that your dad was there with the fire artery starting. He could explain to them what was inside that building. Can you dive into more about what elses inside their . It is a lot of cardboard boxes with all the nails in it. Wood pallets. We had three personal treks in there. One semitruck and two other 20 foot trucks that honestly have gas in them. That might be why there was some excessive flames at the beginning. There was two trucks that we park in there every evening. Mainly, it is just wood pallets and cardboard boxes is the majority of it. Thats the reason why the flames are so big. Im watching on the news is im talking to you and it is crazy whats going on right now. Its just one building on fire. 140 14th street that is on fire. So everyone is clear, nobody was in the building. My dad was on his way to work this morning and got there and saw the flames are ready up. I cant imagine. I am watching this with you. I was going to ask him it sounds like your father arrived at work this morning and then learned about the fire. To try to be firm on a timeline, no one called your father. He just went to work as usual and saw this was happening . Correct. To be clear, i see on the screen that it is bart celt. He usually goes into work at 630 in the morning so when he got there at 6 30 am he was not allowed to get into the building because it was already on fire. Has your dad or you have been open during the pandemic. At one point last night would you say the last person left that building . I was the last person to leave the building at 3 pm. We are usually open until 4 pm or 4 30 pm but because of the pandemic we reduced our hours to 3 pm. I left at 3 pm and everything was fine at that time. To be honest with you, the back alley has a lot of times has a lot of homeless camping out there. This is actually a fear we always have talked about that perhaps the homeless back there could be doing something to start a fire. I dont know if that was the case. But a lot of times we do have homeless that camp out in the backstreet which i believe you mentioned earlier. Its called erie street. Have you had a chance to talk to dad after he called you with the initial news . I cant imagine to think how many things you are thinking of right now as you see this. He was trying to call me when i was on the phone with you guys. He is literally standing over by Foods Company which is across the street from our building. And my dad says the whole building is gone. Every thing is gone. Its a very large complex at a half of a block that we are talking about. In regards to the size of the building. Hes standing across the street telling us that everything will be gone when it is all said and done. And there is no other buildings attached. This is it . This is not the only building my dad owns. He owns a couple other buildings in San Francisco where we previously used to be. Used to be on 11th street where slims nightclub that used to be. That just closed down a few months ago because of the pandemic. But this is the building that we moved to in 1982. We have been at this location since 1982. He said her dad was calling. I was going to say, lets let you go and touch base with your father and make sure that you are safe and we appreciate you getting in touch with us. If you have more information, give us a call back. And again, thank you for your time this morning during this difficult moment watching the Family Company burn. Thank you. I appreciate time and i just wanted to call and let you know that everybodys okay. Nobody is inside the building. That the main thing. And tears come and go but people, not so much. I just wanted to let you know that everybody is okay. Nobody inside the building at this time. I appreciate time. Thank you. From ryan, lets bring in our own Allie Rasmussen who has been following the fire for the last hour or so. What can you report pics i just spoke with supervisor matt haney and this is happening in his district. He said that he has been texting with the San Francisco fire chief getting updates of whats been going on at this fire. We went over a lot of the locations that happen. 13th in folsom. South venice and we just heard from the family that owns the business that burned here. He said that this is a Family Business where this broke out that has wood and storage pallets and that the building is now gone. According to supervisor haney, there are a couple of other businesses that may be impacted by this. At least three businesses affected by this fire. It started at 7 am this morning. It quickly went to five alarms which means that all available fire crews in the city were on this fire. This is primarily an Industrial Area but there is some evacuations of some homes on nearby 14th street. 14th and erie nearby where this fire is going on. The good news though is that you are looking at some of the video from early this morning after the fire broke out where you could see large flames and that heavy plume of black smoke. But according to people on scene now, it looks like firefighters are making some progress on this fire. They have their ladder trucks completely surrounding it and we have seen some of the images change from flames and smoke do now just smoke in the area. Not sure if we can go back to that live picture from the ground where you can see next to the central freeway which is right next to where this is happening. You no longer see the flames but just the lighter colored smoke rising through the air. There were some concerns about live power lines being down in the area but supervisor haney said that the power has been shut off so thats no longer a concern. However, it is obviously highly recommended that you avoid this area if you can at all because you can see a very large firefighter presence there. A five alarm fire means that dozens of firetrucks and crews out at the scene trying to put out this fire at south venice and 13th street. An Industrial Area. We heard earlier from the Family Member that owned the business that burned there. A family owned business. Conversely, they described that nothing is left of what had been there warehouse with pallets and would that they were selling to people and they have been around for about 50 years. The good news is that we dont have any reports of any injuries and so it looks like firefighters had made a lot of progress in putting up this fire. No longer flames coming from the building but still heavy smoke in the air. Firefighters will be giving an update on the status of this fire in about 20 minutes so we will continue to follow that and bring you the latest updates on this fire in San Francisco as they come in. Lets talk about the traffic impact this is having their own city streets. And also on the bridge. Thats right. Its having an impact on city streets but also on the freeway. This was clearly visible and still is even though smoke is not black anymore, you can still tell that something is going on. Look at northbound onetoone. 101. Its usually not backed up this time this morning at all. The backups are little less severe but a good area to avoid the 101. The 280 extension is a good way to get rapid this is all happening in the central freeway on 14th street between south venice and folsom. A good area to the whole area is unaffected. They turn the power off to a large area because of the downed power lines. Signal lights it may not be working with a good area to avoid. You may also see a lot of fire trucks around the city rolling around because theyre covering the stations that were taken up to this. This is a good time to avoid this whole area there. What about todays weather . Lets go to steve paulson. First we will focus on the city. Wind is 515 Miles Per Hour. Thats the strongest gust i have seen at 50 Miles Per Hour. It could be a little stronger but nothing crazy. It is overcast with clarity to mostly cloudy. Temperatures in the 50s. We have a big fog bank extending well inland. Still 55 in the city. Low 60s in livermore and san jose. Oakland 58. Along the embarcadero, westwind at 4. Also 55 with low clouds hanging around. 31 mile per hour gusts at travis. It does look like a teeny bit cooler today but fog and low clouds will move inland and retreat back. Thunderstorms in the mountains and overall temperatures will be closed to seasonal averages. Maybe a bit above with santa rosa and san jose a little bit below. It is now a 13 and. Firefighters put out a fire in pittsburgh and rescued one person after i graduate up in planes of rapid this happened at 2 45 am on crestview drive near chatsworth street. The crews say that fire and smoke was firing pouring out of the garage when they got reports that two people inside the home. We had reports of a rescue and reports of unaccounted residents. So we switch to rescue mode where we fought fire into searches for victims simultaneously. We were able to remove one victim unharmed out of house and continued to search for the second victim. The second victim was found at a different location. Truck crews rescued two adult dogs and a litter of puppies. The cause of the fire is being invested. Truck today, officials will mark one year be a deadly shooting at the gilroy garlic festival. Theres a service to honor the three people who were killed and 17 others wounded in the attack. The remembrance will include remarks from gilroys mayor and the raising of a flag saying give restaurant. Later this morning, we would tell you more about what is being done to remember the victims and survivors both this morning and then again later tonight. Truck today, the contra costa board of supervisors will consider an ordinance to find people and businesses for not following the countys Health Orders. We are live this morning more on the store. Reporter the meeting starts in just about 15 minutes but we are told it could be well into the day before the Contra Costa County board of supervisors actually talks about this ordinance. We know that they plan on voting on it today. The board will decide whether or not to find people and businesses who dont ball the countys Health Orders. From not Wearing Masks together and be groups and not maintaining distance among other things. If the board approves this, contra costa would be the third county in the bay area to boat an ordinance like this into law following napa and marin counties. Contra costa county has been on the california watchlist for weeks because of increased infection rates and hospitalizations. The hope is that fines could motivate people to follow the rules. If this law is passed, a county worker could either issue that bind right away or could first issue a violation notice. That would give the person or business two days to fix the problem. If it is not corrected, then they can be find. Looking at the screen, this is what the breakdown would look like. People can get a 100 fine for the first violation. 200 for the second. And 500 for each additional violation. The cost for businesses though is higher. It is 250 for the first violation. 500 on the second. And 1000 for each additional violation. The law will need a 4 5 boat to go into effect and like a mansion, they do plan on voting on it at some point today. A fourth day of tributes continues today for the late georgia congressman john lewis. Yesterday he was honored with a ceremony while lying in state in the rotunda at the u. S. Capitol becoming the first africanamerican lawmaker to receive the honor. Even though the world around him gave him every cause for bitterness, he stubbornly treated everyone with respect. And love. I always pay tribute to great americans and john lewis is the only representing and he is one of those. Lewises flag draped casket was brought outside to the top of the capital steps for public beam. A measure taken because of the pandemic. All visitors are required to wear masks and remain socially distance. Tomorrow the casket will be taken to atlanta where a private funeral will be held on thursday. Happening today, it is expected to be day 62 of demonstrations in portland. Last night protesters breached a fence around the federal courthouse and chop fireworks at officers. Federal agents fired back with tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls. The mayors of six u. S. Cities are pin to congress to make it illegal for the federal government to deploy federal agents to cities that dont want them. Oakland city councilman said the council will begin to quote take any and all lawful necessary steps to protect against any harm caused by federal officers. Counsel member dan callan said there are concerns that federal agents will be sent in after the protest at the Alameda County courthouse. 200,000 of damage was done to the building. Truck you are not invited here. We do not want to come here and we would do it we can within the law to prevent you from coming here. The councilman would not say what the steps might be. That officers have been sent to several cities where there has been street violence but critics say the presence of those agents is doing more to stoke violence then curtail it. It has been a busy morning covering that major fire burning in San Francisco that is still burning there in the area of 14th and erie and south venice. We are monitoring the traffic impact of that in looking at the bay area commute still. Firefighters to have a better handle on the fire and that means less smoke and also less of a distraction for people driving in the era. I want to show it on the map for you. It really is in the center of San Francisco. I put the arrow on 280 which is the alternate route. Try to use 280 instead of 101 point you can still see 101 is still slow. The traffic on the bridge as the smoke is going down seems to be getting better. I want to look at the toll plaza commute. Not as bad as we thought. It was cleared out and then they had to turn the metering lights back on. But now things are better. As the smoke started going away, there was less distraction and i think we are going to be okay in an hour or so on the bay bridge. Lets bring steve back in with todays weather. I think we know about todays weather because theres a lot of fog and low cloudsthe some inland areas could bump up a little bit. Low clouds and fog out there looking at the Oakland Alameda estuary. Sound the fog horn. Its really solved in paid a big fog bank is out there and we have seen julys where we get wild swings. Not now. It is absolutely groundhog day in july. Low clouds and big thunderstorms of the mountains especially in tahoe and reno. Also truckee and northeast california by shasta. 50s and 60s in the city. The wind the most ive seen is 515 Miles Per Hour. Also at 55 at the embarcadero. A robust breeze in fairfield gusting to 31 other. Nothing new for them but it has picked up in the last hour. 73 in lakeport moving up to 100 again. Fairfield 64 moving up to 91. We are caught in between low to the north and highs in the texas pen handle. Wendy weikel down in the next day the high builtin and we warm up. We continue to pull the breaking news out of San Francisco. A five alarm fire that kicked up just before 7 am this morning. This is basically in the south market neighborhood mainly on the west and specifically the 14th and shot well. This went to five alums because there was a large building that cup by there and they needed more than 100 firefighters to respond. Engines and letter trucks. Early in the hour we had a man on the phone with us. He said its his Family Company that caught fire. He was also telling us that inside was a let a few with construction supplies, pallets and he said his father went to work this morning and when he arrived, the building was already on fire. Firefighters on scene trying to knock that fire down. And what struck me the most is that this is a Family Company. This is something he said that has been around san franci for more than 70 years. You could hear the upset in his voice. And rightfully so. This company has his name on it but he said his father is the one who went to work like always this morning and saw that the building was in flames. Of course now it was definitely so difficult to hear those words. If you compare this picture to what we were seeing when we were able to talk to him live in the past hour. Things have changed dramatically but these were the first images of the fire that came to us from a viewer. There was a thick black smoke rising straight up into the sky. Orange flames coming from the building. 140 14th street. People from all around San Francisco and the east bay could see flames from this major five alarm fire. Again, firefighters took a defensive stance and essentially they said they could not go in for our own safety. The building is at the very least, very heavily damaged. We are expecting to hear 15 minutes or so. When that briefing begins, we will bring it to. We have been talking about the weather impact and the fact that is not super windy over there, thankfully. The winds were not blowing the smoke over San Francisco. There was a traffic impact as well. We were seeing backups in the neighborhood and on the bridge. We will talk more about this in a minute and also bring you the briefing by fire officials on this five alarm fire, as soon as that starts. That fire was burning right by the 101. It was. Its right near the central freeway paid now that we know where the part is and we know what building it was in, it makes sense that these pictures that we are looking at at first when we try to figure it out. Right across the street from Foods Company. The fire did have an impact on the commute into San Francisco along northbound 101. Its still that way on northbound 101. I would use 280 instead because traffic is lighter because of the pandemic. 280 is a good way. If youre thinking you should go to San Francisco to the east bay . Theres a little bit of a backup but now things are okay. I wouldnt shy away if you do have to come into San Francisco. Go ahead and use the bay bridge. There will be a small backup with smoke rising from the era. If you are driving to the area there, on 14th street, thats a good area to avoid. Lets go back to mike. We have uncovered lapses within the system that is supposed to help the mental ill in San Francisco. One example is that of thomas obannon. He was arrested after a santa at glide Memorial Church back in april. Surveillance videos show him hours earlier at a residential Tenderloin Hotel taken People Including Police with a two by four and a screwdriver. We obtained records revealing obannon had just been released from a 5150 order he was put on involuntary psychiatric hold just the night before. The only operation in San Francisco that ever deals or is forced to deal with people with acute Mental Health crisis are the Fire Department or the police department. That is not the proper approach but that is the one we have used in San Francisco for as long as i can remember. A 5150 allows authorities to hold patients that are threat to themselves or others for up to 72 hours. But we learned that obannon was sedated and held for only a few hours before he was cut loose. Afterwards police say he attacked a man walking his dog and then the competition at the residential hotel. City leaders are now working on programs to provide more treatment for patients and hire more outreach workers. We want to jump in and get you to the San FranciscoFire Department holding a News Conference. Lets get right there in front of the microphones. We got called to erie street. We have 160 firefighters. 60 pieces of apparatus unseen at this time. It is primarily commercial structures. We have 100 workers displaced from those commercial structures. We do have one firefighter injured with moderate injuries. He has been transported to San Francisco general. We have this fire approximately 75 contained but we have stopped its forward progress. Our members have done an incredible job out here and this is what we trained for. This is why we train. And it may look like a whole bunch of spaghetti on the ground and everything else, but these folks know exactly what they are doing because of the hard work they do every day training. I will let our deputy chief of operations give you a little briefing in terms of what he knows about the fire. Good morning. Deputy chief of operations. I got here on a second alarm where it was fully alarmed and rapidly moving to a second building. It was very quick. When i got there we had problems with the power lines. We actually had transformers falling on the ground. I had to back everybody up and had to reposition as it was proceeding to get to the third building. The number on the fourth building at the time was extremely rapidly. Everyone did a fantastic job as we could be at a defensive bar. I want to thank pg e because i got the power lines shut down and a shadow to the fire water department. We had to use our highpressure system. We did not have adequate water then we exceeded all the hydrants of first pizza we started using highpressure system. And we are now pulling water from twin peaks down here. 100 million gallons going with a good job with 100 membered. I will visit him in the hospital and we will check on him. This building appears to be a roofing supply warehouse. The first building i went inside to check to make sure was okay. There was a sheriff inside and i told him to get equipment. They had some ammo in the basement. I told them to get all the ammo and thing up. It was a concrete building so he was in a safe position but i made sure with the sheriffs apartment that he was out okay and they got anything out okay. We got firefighters on that roof so it didnt penetrate the sheriffs building. Right now i have Companies Inside with Salvage Companies covering the computers to make sure nothing gets wet. We should be good lately. We dont know if it started at the bin. That building was fully involved when we got here pretty rapidly went into the second building within a matter of minutes. I dont know at this point right now. One more question for the deputy. When i got here, i didnt see anything except for burning buildings. That happened after. The power line, the power pole was on fire. We had to like a said again, they position themselves correctly for a single building fire. Initially but when it rapidly change we had to move a bunch of apparatus back and move some host. The pole caught on fire and the transformer came down in a matter of minutes. But it was not started from that. I cant comment but that happened afterwards. One of our chiefs and he got hit in the head a little bit. Hes fine. We had to force him to go. A abundance of caution. A tough guy. I would take any further questions related to this incident. We had occupied an unoccupied commercial building stretching from southbound venice to folsom street between erie street and between 14th street. These are two full city ball blocks with large commercial grade buildings and as the chief stated earlier rapidly progressing at 630 and grew to fifth alarmed fire involving six buildings. The one injury to the firefighter was sustainable and that firefighter was in firefighting operations and the firefighter who was a chief officer will be okay currently be treated as possible. Fire investigators are currently on scene investigating this fire and it will merely be speculative in response was until we can confirm with fire investigators and cause and origins is. We can confirm that this is involving six commercial buildings with 100 displays workers that are currently being treated and cared for by the american red cross. We will have a future update on these incident at 10 30 am at the same location. At this time we are concluding this briefing. Think you. Thank you. You have been listening into the News Conference there in San Francisco. The latest on the five alarm fire that kicked up around 6 30 am. You heard 160 firefighters on scene there at 14th and shotwell south of market. 100 workers displaced. Six commercial buildings impacted. We heard the deputy chief talk about such a hectic scene. Firefighters arrived when they first pulled up, one commercial building fully engulfed already. It quickly went to a second to a third to a fourth and fifth alarmed. Transformers popping and parlance an issue. He tipped his cap to pg e that did a great job to turn off the electricity. They had a lot of problems with the water initially he said. The waters coming down from twin peaks as a dumping it. 75 contained. And one injury to report. That is from a firefighter with a moderate injury. Maybe a possible knock to the head. That firefighter seems to be okay. We heard the fire officials said we had to force him to go to the hospital and certainly his brothers and sisters in the Fire Department will be checking up and following up with him. Interesting here to hear the fi this is why we train. The civilian eye looks like a mess of response where we cant make a very good sense of but exactly what the San FranciscoFire Department transfer. Here we have it again.
