A worker at the Veterans Home of california has now died of covid19. Her death is the first at that facility. 62yearold Gwen Robinson was a beloved employee at the nations largest Veterans Home, where she worked for 12 years. New tonight, we talked to her children. They dont think that she got the virus that work. Reporter no direct link and only one other employee has tested positive and they are in a different department. For gwen, in just days, it proved fatal. She was just here, just right here. Loved her crafts room and her niners room, shandra has been big fans. My mom and dad loved the 49ers. Reporter now daughter ebony is quarantined, alone in their vallejo home. Her brother brings food and comfort, both of them reeling at their moms abrupt death and their dad now in intensive care. Her purse is still in the house. Her shoes, every part of her is still there. Reporter 62yearold gwen worked at the Veterans Home where a shut down and strict screening has kept covid at bay. It after work last tuesday she was overcome with fever and nausea and tested positive. We were able to laugh and joke for a little bit and we really thought she was going to pull through. Reporter but with asthma and a blood condition she worsened and by saturday she said her goodbyes on. I just told her she doesnt have to fight anymore. She can walk towards the light and get her wings and her heart stopped. Reporter by that time 61 yearold Keith Robinson was in kaiser too. Together 35 years, the couple managed a phone call from their hospital beds before gwen passed. Is one thing he told me before he was intubated was, please lay her to rest. Reporter now a gofundme raises funds for those expenses. She worked for 12 years in the retirement home, showering vets with attention. She was like this is my way for showing appreciation for them serving our country. I can just be nice and sweet and love on them. And she loved them so much. Reporter in just days everything changed. This room doesnt feel the same without her. Reporter and they hope their loss, a mom and grandmother of nine, will make people careful. It is real and has devastated our family a matter of a week. The family doesnt know how the robinsons got infected. Gwen had almost no personal contact at the vets home, keith drives for the Postal Service so his work is a possibility. Right now everyone is pulling for him to recover as they make arrangements for gwen. California city new record today for a new coronavirus cases. California now has 413,000 cases of the virus. The state reported 115 deaths. That brings the number of deaths statewide to 7870 since the start of this pandemic. Governor newsom held a briefing today at a warehouse where the state stores and distributes millions of masks and other ppe. The governor gave an update on the increasing number of cases and deaths. He says over a sevenday period california has averaged 90 deaths a day. In over a sevenday period we have averaged 90 lives lost, thats compared to about 98 in the previous seven days, but nonetheless 90 lives lost. Its just another reminder, if i need to remind anybody, of the magnitude of impact that this virus continues to have. Governor newsom also said the state sevenday Positivity Rate has also ticked up to 7. 6 . That is well above the 5 benchmark recommended by the cdc. Another death row inmate at san quentin has died from the coronavirus. The department of corrections says john beams died yesterday at an outside hospital. He was 67 years old and convicted of firstdegree murder and had been on death row since 1995. His death is the 14th at san quentin from the coronavirus. The prison currently has 857 cases. That is down from two days ago as inmates continue to recover. More than 2000 inmates at san quentin have tested positive since the outbreak in late may. City leaders in San Francisco announced expanded testing today. More businesses wont reopen until the infection rate comes down. Reporter despite early success in flattening San Franciscos early infection and hospitalization curve, the city now finds itself with the curve trending in the wrong direction. The citys Public Health department saying it took 38 days to go from 2000 to 3000 infections, but just 13 to go from 4000 to 5000 infections, an average of 79 new cases diagnosed every single day. Dr. Brenda colfax saying if things dont change, the city could face a crisis similar to what unfolded last month on the east coast. When we talk about the curve and our surge, i am very concerned that as cases increase its plausible we could get in a new york like situation in the late summer or early fall. Reporter Public Health and the Mayors Office saying part of the way forward is through expanded testing. The city has ordered private medical providers to step up testing and now the city is adding testing locations and increasing testing for those most likely to be infected beyond the 3000 test already being performed daily throughout the city. In total, we will have an additional 1400 testing slots per day. That is nearly a 45 increase over what we are averaging, what we have been averaging over the past week. Reporter the mayor also discussed a topic on the minds of families throughout San Francisco, what school will look like with distance learning. The mayor says the city is working on opening learning hubs and working with the community to provide alternatives that work for families. We want kids to get back to school, back to playing each other and learning, all of the things they need to grow and develop. Art of the challenge that we have is we have not flattened this curve. We have seen things get worse and we all have to do our part. Reporter for now, the city says the pausing reopenings remains in effect. Health officials stressing face coverings and social distancing are the keys to bringing this latest surge under control. The mayor and Health Officials are saying, without a doubt social gatherings in the city are responsible for the latest increase in infections. Dozens of shop owners in San Franciscos Ferry Building were told to shut down after the city ruled the marketplace with an indoor mall. The order went into effect today and includes 26 businesses that do not have direct entrances to the outside. Until now, stores in the building were deemed to be essential and were able to operate during the shelter in place order. In San Francisco were ordered to close after the county was put on the states watchlist. You have tens of thousands of dollars of meat in there, very perishable product. Without a heads up this is very devastating to our business. We have orders to pick up today, tomorrow, the rest of the week. 35 of the states 58 counties are on the watchlist, which prohibits many businesses from operating indoors. Now do a pair of wildfires that are burning. Firefighters are working to get the upper hand on the hog fire. It has burned 9500 acres, but containment has grown to 23 . The fire began last saturday and is currently about five miles away from the city of susanville. 170 structures were threatened, but so far no damage. Farther north is the gold fire. It started on monday and has burned more than 14,000 acres and is 10 contained. Cal fire says the flames threatened homes, ranches and commercial operations, including agriculture, livestock and timber, as well as a campground. Every month we go through the same thing, where we have to go down to the post office. They say they go weeks without getting their mail delivered. The response we got today when we asked the post office about the problem. First, a new requirement that csu students taken ethnic studies course. Of the push for social justice has they Cal State University system making a change to its graduation requirement for the first time in 40 years. Students will need to take an ethnic studies course to get a diploma. But its a change that even some ethnic studies professors dont support. Reporter beginning in 2023, to graduate from one of the 23 csu campuses, like cal state east bay, students will be required to take a general Education Course in ethnic studies social justice. The Trustees Press release says the requirement can be fulfilled through a Broad Spectrum of course offerings. The critics say its so broad they argue the requirement can be fulfilled without ever taking an ethnic studies class. I think it is a requirement that does not guarantee ethnic studies will be selected by students. Its an either or. Reporter traditional courses in ethnic studies focus on four different groups of americans native, african, asian and latin. Testes supporting the new guidelines said the definition was viewed as too limited. So we adopted the more broader look of saying it can include jewish studies, arab studies, armenian studies and other groups. Reporter a competing requirement is making its way through the state legislature. Bill ab 1460 would require an ethnic studies course focused on one of the four is directly defined groups. An ethnic studies professor supports the bill and says he and his colleagues never had a say in what the board of trustees approved. I feel like it is part of the continual struggle that we have had as ethnic studies faculty. They do not listen to us. Reporter current and former csu students we spoke to said, given a choice, they prefer students learn about one of the four is directly recognized groups. I think a lot of the racism and things that go on today would be a little bit different because we would be a little bit more knowledgeable and be able to articulate our words to each other way better. Reporter the bill is currently making its way through the state legislature and is expected to be approved and then go to the governor.
