New this morning the Oakland City Council narrowly rejected a proposal that would of called for deep cuts to the Police Department budget. A lot of people in support for the cuts to the Police Department. I want you to listen to what some of the people had to say. You have blood on your hands already. The police are understaffed and underfunded at his it is. How dare you. City Council Members were deadlocked that would 2 million from the police budget. Earlier the council rejected another proposal but wanted to take 11 million from the police budget. The mayor said they had concerns how this would impact Response Time in an emergency. Any cuts will require a significant reduction for a widely recognized in adequate 911 response. Elimination of Current Police services as well as further strain on what is well documented as an understaffed police force. The city already took more than 14 million from the Police Department last month. Many residents are demanding cuts as there are no nationwide calls to defund the Police Department after the death of george floyd in minneapolis. The city council is launching a task force by reducing the budget by 50 . It would cut into Mental Health issues and Youth Violence prevention. If we can open with those reserves, we think we will get through this bottleneck. How are the animals doing during this time . The animals are doing great. A lot of them kind of miss having the act hippity out on the pathway, like the chimps and the grisly bears. Others, appreciate the quiet. They are starting to use the entire exhibit like the bald eagles, for example, they are doing fine. Weve never cut our keeper staff to provide the enrichment so the animals have things to do all day long. They are doing great. I know the zoo lost some of what is typically the most profitable months of the year. Your summers your block buster season. Here, its almost over. The fundraiser this weekend, as you look forward for the months to come, what is your hope for the oakland zoo and the community . Our hope is to make it to the point where we make it into spring. In our business model, the month of may, june, july, august, we build up a reserve. Net loss in september, october, november and all the way through march, we live off that reserve. We lost three months to build off that reserve. We can make it to spring and build up the reserve again. People are eager. I was not aware the Japanese Tea Garden was so popular and so many people love the environment here. Im glad we were able to bring back to everyone in the community, especially people visiting from all over. The Japanese Tea Garden will be open wednesday through sunday from nine a. M. To 5 45 p. M. People are encouraged to buy tickets online. It is a jewel of San Francisco. Is one of those things even though we may have been taken there by our parents, we dont go there until we have out of town guests. Its time to be tourists ourselves. Im a middle age man, i like anything gardening. I will go to the Japanese Tea Garden with my camera. A great place to go. Their benches there, you can sit down and take in the sights. It smells clean. Its one of those things if you have not gone come you have to go. Mike, i have not been to alcatraz but ive been to the Japanese Tea Gardens several times. Its a special spot. A lot of history dating back to the 1890s. Its also during the worlds fair. Like the palace of fine arts and the worlds fair. I love the koi ponds in the garden. I have not been for a couple decades.
