Reporter thats right. Definitely heroic situation in oakland. We have a live look at the fire. You will hear from that man in just a minute. But first, lets walk through the details on exactly what happened. Our photographer is out in oakland right now. And what you are looking at, you can see there are a lot of firefighters at the four plex on 31st and Martin Luther king, jr way. We dont have the live pictures. You are looking at video here we go. Here are the live pictures we have right now. We have a couple of fire trucks out there with the ladders. You can see the firefighters on the ladders. They had chain sauce and you can see the action. Still a little bit of smoke coming from the roof of the four plex. Definitely a tense situation early this morning. At this point, we dont know if anyone was injured, but we are working to get that information. Firefighters have had their hands full this morning trying to get control on the fire. They were called out at about 3 20 a. M. We dont know how this start, but the fire tore through the building. At one point, crews had to get out because part of the inside and roof collapsed. As of right now, it appears the active flames have been knocked down, which is good news. But firefighters will likely be at the scene for hours. We did speak to a person who lived inside the building who explained how a roommate helped him get to safety. I lived at 3038 Martin Luther king way, in oakland. Our house burned down. Its burning downright now if you look closely behind me. What happened this morning, do you know . About 3 a. M. , i my roommate getta is a hero. She woke me up, and i looked out the window and theres a fire on the stairwell burning my house down. And i got out, and i am pretty shore sure my cats are dead, both of them. An arrest in the east bay where a 50yearold man from pittsburgh is accused of taking a bomb to the place where he used to work in antioch. The business was evacuated last night before 6 p. M. The man was arrested, seen trying to drive away as police arrived. The Walnut Creek Police bomb squad rushed in. They confirmed it was a bomb, and they safely removed it. President trump is defending his response to the pandemic as the november election is closer. As his poll numbers keep going down, the president , today, plans to resume White House Briefings on the coronavirus. We have more on that. Right now, new york has 407,000 cases followed by california at almost 399,000. While new york is averaging fewer than 1,000 case as day, california is reporting as many as 10,000 a day. But, california ranks hadth in deaths with almost 8,000. New york has almost 32,000. Major League Baseball is back in the bay area. Firefighters in east Contra Costa County lifted evacuations orders after a grass fire it started on holland track road east of oakland. 75 acres burned. One home was in danger because of strong winds. No one was hurt, but firefighters are still trying to contain it. There have been two other grass fires in the same area in the last month. The investigation continues. Federal investigators are looking for the reason why a helicopter made an Emergency Landing in calaveras county, yesterday. Pg e hired the helicopter to perform work near san andreas. Three people were hurt on the helicopter during the Emergency Landing. They were able to get out before the helicopter caught fire. Flames spread to dry grass but firefighters quickly put them out. A man in san jose says he received a very surprising warning notice from the city accusing him of setting off illegal fireworks on the 4th of july. Charlie murray says he was disappointed there were so many people setting off high powered fireworks object the 4th of july. He said his dog was scared by it. But he didnt call the police. Then days later, he received a warning notice from the city. I understand they are trying to stop illegal fireworks, and i totally support them i think its the right thing to do. But they need a system that targets who is doing it. And not waste time on people who havent done it at all. Now the city of san jose says it received 6100 complaints about fireworks this year. 94 warnings and 5 citations were issued. Murry says he is the only person in his neighborhood to get a warning. Happening today, two San Francisco supervisors will introduce legislation to address the covid19 crisis for font line workers at sfo. Supervisors will be joined by sfo workers today to introduce the healthy airport ordinance. They say despite precautions, at least 71sfo workers have tested positive for the virus. The ordinance will raise standards for the workers and ensure everyone has affordable Family Health care. Starting next week, all guests will be required to wear masks in the lobbies and other public areas at marriott hotels. Now the hotel chain has been requiring employees to wear masks for several months, but said it is expanding the mandate to guests. Marriott has more than 7300 Hotels Worldwide making it the Largest Hotel chain toish out a mask requirement. Advocacy groups representing hotels in San Francisco have filed a lawsuit against the city over a law requiring that rooms be cleaned and disinfected every day. Now the law was passed earlier this month to slow the spread of the coronavirus. But hotels say that requirement put workers at risk and would be a financial burden. They are seeking a change in the law so they would only be required to clean after a guest checks out. Hotels are set to reopen during the citys phase 3 reopening plan, but that date has not yet been determined. Protesters held a rally and march in dublin to demand that many inmates at the santa rita jail be released during the pandemic. They say the Alameda County sheriff should release sick inmates who require medical care and inmates who have not been to trial yet. The santa rita jail punishing people who could tons usually innocent with a real risk of death. The advocates want independent and unand i found inspections. The latest count shows 106 cases of covid19 at the santa rita jail including inmates and staff. And Officials Say they have released more than 1,000 inmates since the pandemic began. Another San Quentin State Prison inmate died from the coronavirus. Thatmate was a 58yearold man who had been on death row. He died at an outside hospital where he was being treated for the virus. We talked with a person who lives in the building, and woke up hearing crackling noises from the fire. Smelling electrical burning i run through my house to so if my house is on fire. None of the house is on fire. I open the door to the back deck, and thats profoundly on fire. The staircase just all the way up in my face. I woke up my roommate and grabbed like my essentials and i left and i have been out here in the winter pajamas in july ever since. Theres no word on the cause of the fire, and no reports of any injuries. Also this morning, firefighters in east Contra Costa County finish putting out the third fire in 8 hours that. Started at 2 15 this morning on dutch slow road outside the oakland the oakley city limits. One man says he accidentally started the fire. I put gas in the generator and spilled some. I thought i picked it up and when i started it it gent went up. I feel bad i mean, my dog my girls dogs were inside and i dont think they got out. There was no nearby hydrants, so firefighters had to run a hose about a half a block to pump water out of the slew. There are no reports of any injuries. Our time is 5 34. Happening today, an emergency measure will be voted on by the marin county board of supervisors to crackdown harder on shelter in place orders. Yes, marin county is one of the 30 counties in california that is on the state department of Public Healths watch list because of a rising number of coronavirus cases. At last check this were 2200 people who tested positive for the virus. According to the website, thats 200 more cases of the virus from the last update last week. So today, the marin county board of supervisors will consider an emergency measure to step up enforcement of shelter in place rules to vote spread of covid19. Earlier this month,s the county rolled back reopenings like Indoor Dining and most other indoor activities are no longer allowed. But the county will consider ways to enforce the rules by introducing financial penalties for people and business that is dont comply. For people violating the shelter in place they could face 25 500 civil penalty. Businesses operating in violation of the Health Orders could face a penalty from 250 to 10,000. The size of the violation and the fine would depend on the overall risk to Public Health of an active. Again, this is something that the marin county board of supervisors will meet to discuss and considerate an emergency meeting at 9 00 this morning. Reporting live allie rasmus, ktvu fox 2 news. Thank you. Today, the halfmoon Bay City Council will consider putting a measure on the november bullet asking voters to approve a 3 tax hike for hotel guests. Now halfmoon bay mayor supports the proposal saying the lock down cut no city revenues which is needed to pay for Law Enforcement, Emergency Preparedness and support businesses and people affected by the pandemic. If the tax increase is approved by the voters, it would go up to 15 . The highest rate in san mateo county. Santa rosa Memorial Hospital workers will be back on the picket lines today. They plan to strike all week for wage increases, better benefits, and social distancing protocols. Workers include nursing assistants, respiratory therapists, dietary aides, how keepers and me cal tech anythings who have been without a contract for a year. We put ourselves on the front lines every single day to create an environment where the patients can come in that are sick and vulnerable. Now the emergency room at santa rosa memorial remains opened this week with replacement workers. Health care workers are also picketing at two san jose hospitals this afternoon. Employees at Regional Medical center and Good Samaritan hospital say while they are putting their lives at risk, during the pandemic Retirement Benefits rock cut. They say its not the time to create conflict. And the company is committed to protecting staff and patients during the unprecedented medical crisis. Its now 5 37. South lake tahoe reporting the first death blamed on the coronavirus. The victim was a man in his mid 60s. He died over the weekend. Now Eldorado County is not right now on the virus watch list but the Health Department is warning if the community doesnt take immediate action to stop the spread of the virus the county will be added to that list. Meantime, a Free Meal Service for students in south San Francisco canceled this week because of health concerns. The School District says an employee at El Camino High School came in contact with someone who tested positive for covid19. The School District is quarantining some of the staff at the central kitchen and cleaning and sanitizing that school. Families who take part in the Free Meal Program can get food at locations in the jefferson elementary School District. Across the bay area, parents are preparing for the new school year. And Distance Learning means a combination of Online Learning and home schooling for families. But many parents tell us they cannot be with their kids, and still do their jobs. So they are looking at other options. The director of parents place Resource Center in palo alto is helping them. If they think small group tutoring will work for them. Find a teacher or an educator who can facilitate the learning for a smaller group. Unfortunately, the people left out of that are those who cant afford to hire a teacher. Even with the tutoring, its only online because of health restrictions. And experts are telling parents to focus less on academics right now. Now it happened to two women a wanted to move to oakland. They were car jacked at gunpoint while they were looking for an apartment. Their belongings were stolen. When they called 911, they got a busy signal or they were put op hold. Ktvu learned that similar incidents have been happening for years a report from grand jury shows underfunding, understaffing and thousands of calls are going unanswered. I was completely perplexed. At first, i thought the phone was broken or i had not dialed 911 because i was so not, it was not in my conception that you would have a hold on a 911 line. It seems like the antithesis of the point. On the 9. In portland, protesters demanding social justice say they will not back down against the Trump Administration. Now monday was the 54th straight night of demonstrations in portland. On sunday night, officers fired tear gas at protesters, and last night, we watched people light several fires near the federal courthouse. Yesterdays rally included a group of women a called themselves the wall of moms. They are angry at what happened over the weekend and vowed to shield protesters from the feds. President trump says he might send in a squad of federal Law Enforcement officers to cities with continued protests, including portland, new york, and oakland. Ktvu Crime Reporter henry lee shows us how bay area and state leaders are responding. More federal Law Enforcement. That i can tell you. In portland, they have done a fantastic job. Reporter from the oval office the president vowed to send federal officers to several cities including oakland. New york and chicago and philadelphia and detroit, and baltimore, and all of these oakland is a mess, we are not going to let this happen in our country. Reporter as a model, he referred to portland where federal agents in camouflage without clear id badges have been using force and on unmarked vehicles and detaining protesters without explanation. They grab them a lot of people in jail. These are not protesters. People say protest. These people are anarchists. These are people that hate our country. Reporter the Trump Administration is reportedly preparing to send federal agents to chicago this week. Trump accused leaders of the cities he is targeting of being scared of protesters. Politicians out there, they are weak. But they are afraid of the people. They are actually afraid of the people. And thats why they say we dont want the federal government helping. Reporter in a tweet, oakland mayor adenounced trump saying oakland needs covid reloaf not troops. He should stop slandering diverse progressive cities. The mayor says theres no civil unrest in oakland. And the presence of federal officers would likely insight it. And Governor Newsom had this to say when asked if trump contacted him about sending the feds. And what his response would be. The answer is no. And we would reject it. Federal involvement into oakland is a threat to all of us. Reporter oakland civil rights attorney walter riley said what happened in portland is no less than occupation. It reminds me of the rendition programs used to pick up claimed terrorists around the world. Reporter Oakland Police say they have not nor would they ask for federal assistance to address crowd management and they would ask the sheriff for mutual aide. Henry lee, ktvu. Thousands of workers walked off the job nationwide in solidarity with the black lives matter movement. Several demonstrations were held in the bay area and around the country yesterday. In San Francisco, 1500 striking janitors walked off the job and marched to city hall. And in oakland, fastfood and amazon workers held a rally at Mosswood Park calling for improved pay and safety on the job. We are here to further amplify their demands for equal pay, for equitable pay and sick leave and ppe because they are not just proat the timing themselves, they are protecting their families and they are protecting the whole community. There were demonstrations across the country yesterday from miami to milwaukee seattle to st. Lawyers asked the judge to require the transparent mask saying its important see the faces of the people they are questioning whether its a witness or a prospective jury member. California state attorney general becerra and the attorneys generals of massachusetts, and new york, are leading a coalition of 23 states. The legal challenge claims that the trumpp administration is undermining part of the Affordable Care act that prohibits discrimination based on gender, race, national origin, sec, age or disability. It is more important than ever that everyone can access Central Health care. Section 1557 in the Affordable Care act was the First Federal civil right law that comprehensively prohibited discrimination in health care.
