Workers at Memorial Hospital say their contract expired a year ago and they are still fighting for pay increases, better benefits, and now more protection against covid19. Reporter the management for the hospital says they have brought in some replacement workers to replace the workers who are on strike this morning. The workers on strike include nursing assistants, respiratory therapybased, dietary aids, hospital workers and medical technicians. It started at 6 00 this morning. The dispute is over pay, healthcare premiums, and paid time off. The workers have been without a contract for more than a year. Negotiations between the union and the hospital have broken down. The workers were initially supposed to go on strike back in february. They post owned it because the pandemic. But now nearly 6 months later, workers say the contract proposals and their working conditions have not changed. There wanting to take away our paid time off, six leave, they want to increase our benefits by 25 year, and there proposed wage increase barely meets the cost of living. The management said that we are deeply disappointed by the strike and is covid cases rise, the hospital says they continue to be prepared for the worst case scenario. The hospital calls its offer to the workers generous during what they say is an extremely challenging environment for hospitals. But the corporate parent received half 1 billion in covid stimulus money this year. Then northbays only Trauma Center so the emergency room will remain open although nonemergency appointments of the house at all may be rescheduled over the next five days. As for the nurses at this cost, they have a no strike clause in our contract so they will be going to work at the hospital crossing the picket lines, but they say some of those nurses me stand in solidarity before and after their work shift on the picket line to support their colleagues. Curbside pickup is also an option. Restaurants can only serve people outdoors and for takeout. Health officials blame an increase in positive cases on people getting together in groups. The worst the virus gets, the longer the restrictions will last. Each of the samples would then have to be tested again individually. Scientists at Oxford University have good news about their experimental vaccine. The people who received the dose in early april and now showing a protected response from their immune systems. Lets get back to the headlines. Happening today, hundreds of workers in a santa rosa hospital are on the picket lines right now. Allie rasmus is reporting why workers at santa rosa Memorial Hospital are on strike and how this could Impact Business there at the hospital. Reporter the hospital says that it will keep its emergency room open and they have brought in some replacement workers to fill those roles also mother workers on strike. But if you have a nonemergency appointment at the hospital today and for the next five days, that might need to be rescheduled. Lets say you alive picture at the outside of santa rosa Memorial Hospital. The picket line has been up since 6 00 this morning. The workers include nursing assistance, respiratory therapist, dietary aids and medical technicians. We can see the workers spread out with their signs along the hospital grounds. Theres dozens of people there. The total number of workers included in the unions on strike is about 700 essential workers. This is a fiveday strike that started this morning. The dispute is over pay, healthcare premiums and paid time off. Negotiations between the union and Hospital Management have broken down and several meteors have been brought in. They were supposed to go on strike back in february. They postponed it because of the pandemic but now nearly 6 months later, workers say the contract proposals and working conditions have not improved. The Management Team is using the pandemic against us to make sure that we stay in our jobs. But yet they are not doing anything to protect us. Theres not appropriate ppe throughout the hospital. Theres not appropriate ppe for us to go into rooms. Reporter management said in a statement that we are deeply disappointed by the strike and they say they are continuing to prepare for the worst case scenario. Again they are brought in some replacement workers. The hotel, Hospital Management says that their offer is generous and they say this is an extremely challenging environment for hospitals right now but the corporate parent of santa rosa memorial received half 1 billion in covid19 stimulus money from the federal government. Santa rosa memorial is a Trauma Center so its emergency room will stay open. Nurses on this hospital have a no strike clause in their contract so the nurses will still be crossing the picket lines to work their regular shifts but we are told that the nurses may stand on the picket lines in solidarity when they are not working. State officials could relax rules for personal care workers who want to do their work outside. The agency that licenses hairstylist, barbers and aestheticians say its looking at allowing some of the services to be performed outside of a salon. The california business Consumer Services and housing agencies as a recognizes the hardships those workers have endured. An announcement on personal Care Services is expected to come in the next few days. Leaders gathered to support inmates. They held a vigil yesterday to remember the inmates who died from covid19.
