Shes keeping businesses open and allowing independent stylists there to keep working. Some of them have said that ill be down and im packing my stuff and they will probably go underground so you have a phrase coined a long time ago, the kitchen beautician and thats whats going to happen. Theyre going to peoples homes or people to their homes and its unfortunate because this is the safest place to have a service done. Donna says salons were closed for more than three months during the first round of shut downs and shes 75 thousand dollars behind on rent. They are safe for stylists because everyone is required to wear a mask, practice social distancing and have their temperatures taken. As many businesses in the Beauty Industry are forced to close again, reporter inially explains how the owners in the industry are calling on the governor to reconsider his decision to role back reopenings. It totally caught me by surprise. Hair stylist Amber Frederick were convinced salons wouldnt close again t. Stylists she works with were following rules. We have barriers between washing stations. We have to sanitize our chairs and entire stations and all the tools we use between every client we have to look at sectors of the economy. Governor gavin newsom shut down barbershops in 29 counties. And we are looking deeply at this question and exploring options going forward. Jones says for some salons this second closure could be worse than the first. They have two choices. Go bankrupt or go underground. At mar boo salon in follow some, Amber Frederick waits to find out when she can go back to work. Its hafrd to not be in control of a business that you run. And to have it in the hands of somebody else. That was emily maha reporting. As far as the time line and when the Beauty Industry can get back to work, Governor Newsom has yet to provide one. Helping Small Businesses evolve and inevacuate and adapt during the covid19 crisis with a new webinar series. Lucky enough to be joined live by the successful business woman and investor barbara cork ran, good morning from San Francisco. Good morning, nice to be here. Of course. Look a lot of Small Businesses in the bay area here they were getting hammered in late march and in april and then things started to look up and this week our governor shut it down for many businesses again and theyre getting hammered once again. Some are throwing their hands up in the air saying we dont know if we can sur vauf. Youre a person who follows numbers, if you could put a percentage on how many businesses will get through the pandemic and also if you had one piece of advice for those Small Businesses here that are struggling. I think the guessing game i hope im wrong but i would think one in three businesses will come through this especially in the beauty space. You have to remember, these are very Small Businesses by and large. They have leases that are expected to be paid monthly. Most of them behind on rent. They have employees wait to go go back to work and some who dont want to go back because theyre making more money on unemployment. So its a complex problem. I think attitude will determine who stays in business or not. What is so key in any kind of stressful situation is that you have a sense of when its going to end. And just as these people as you just watched in your last taup there, they thought it was over and to be hit broadside so all of a sudden they cant open again. It might be just too much to bear and two out of three people will really go out of business, yes. Yeah, i like to follow my instunth. Thats an important thing. I like when people also think out of the box. But reading stories out there when it comes to Small Businesses, while a lot of them are struggling, it does appear some of them i dont want to say take advantage but some of them are succeeding through the pandemic and doing okay. Im curious have you heard certain stories and what separates those going above and actually succeeding and others failing here. I have many businesses ive invested . That are growing during the pandemic. For the first month perhaps feeling guilty about it. Until i had a reminder what theyre doing so well which is working 150 . Theyre not expect to go get anything handed to them. They are bringing the teams really close to themselves to thoroughly brainstorm with each person and the employee being considered equal in their ability to come up with a new idea. Theyre staying close to customers and asking them what would make them happy and feel secure. One of the most successful businesses ive invested in is a business right in your neck of the woods there. Cousins maine lobsters they have franchises all over the United States. The moment the pandemic hit they lost 60 of the trade for the next two weeks but what they spent their time in those two weeks is brainstorming like crazy and they came up with a contact less way to sell lobster rolls. They parked trucks in parking lots and people would pick up their lobster roll and to them its like a night on the town and business has increased 60 since the pandemic hit. How do you explain that . Its because they had an attitude like we can do this, we can figure something out and they went like gang busters with their team to figure it out and they were willing to invest in technology. Whats so underestimated today is how Good Technology is. The technology is a backbone of every business today, much more so than it was five months ago. You cant survive without the right technology. Thats also why i felt luke with my street smarts oncoming through bad times and im cove come through enough to earn stripes and with at t business having the ability to advice on great technology, small changes that make a difference. I thought it was a dream partnership to help people. We both so care we care about the entrepreneur and were going to give our best tactic and reasoning as to how they could come through bad times. These webinars start nec week on the 22nd. You know, theres 12 of them. Its important to emphasize what youre doing. This is free. Right . Of course. Why would you charge someone anything for the help they need . No, i love entrepreneurs, at t los Small Businesses and well bend over backwards to help these people. We want to see everyone succeed and stay in business. Barbara, its a pleasure thank you for all you do and thank you for what youre doing when it comes to 12 free webinars starting next week on the 22nd. Have a great rest of the week. Coming up on mornings on two, dropping the rule that would force International Students to return home. If they werent enrolled in one face to face class. In our next half hour, the backlash from schools across the United States. First, a monument to black lives. Up next. The reknown sculptor with the vision rising 30 feet in the air and the message he hopes it will send. A prom nant bay area sculptor is creating a special monument to the black lives matter moment. Bind the scenes with the sculpt inhibitor. The hands grasping for air. In the hull of a slave ship. This is the pain and suffering. Conveying the history. They were body to body. Chained together. And the agony. It was horrible, cruel. A huge number of them died. And hands symbolizing later generations still reaching for resolution. So thats what i wanted to capture here. The reality of it. So we dont forget where they come from. Mario has long worked on African American themes. This model honoring slaves who died during escape now stands at a virginia cemetery. In delaware his memorial to harriet tub man makes the underground railroad personal. Oakland raised in napa telling stories with skl up chur. Telling history whether its beautiful or difficult, naedz to be told and not just walked by and say theres a plaque. I want people to feel it. For a black lives matter monument, he envisions this ship scene, 30 feet tall and along side it, an african woman conveying peace and justice. I want to have the feeling of empowerment. That the world is in your hands now. Its in all of our hands. The oakland monument remember them honors rosa parks and nelson man dell la. His new concept isnt about individuals. Its about justice, injustice and going to a better place. As someone who creates lasting work, he doesnt agree historical statues deemed offensive could be destroyed. Learn from these monuments whether you like them or not. And put them in their context. I would like people to know who the confederates were. And what they did that was so wrong to our country. Recently when some figures on remember them were vandalized he was philosophical. Theres a problem out there. These are all symptoms of the problem. Before he could remove the paint, someone did so anonymously restoring his faith. He wants his monument to black lives matter to be installed where slave ships landed. An east coast city is interested, unlike remember them which took 11 years to accomplish, he expects the new one will happen faster people are hungry for this and they are coming to me for this. The bottom line is to inspire people. In napa, deborah malone, ktvu news. Big changes come to go the Berkley Police department in minutes. Today steve says the fog has to burn off first. Lets talk to steve today. Seems more like a regular july pattern there steve. Sal, you would know best. You have been here a long time. This is typical. So it took a while to establish itself but its definitely there. The fog bank which is hit and miss going back to may and june is now in place and up and down the coast. I dont think its going anywhere for a little bit. 50s and 60s on the temperatures. San jose and liver metro 62. The city made it to 56. Stratus quo is the pattern. Once the low clouds burn off it will be sunny and brae si. There was a High Pressure system capturing everything. Really only the fog was near the coast and a little made it over the bay. Thats lifted allowing it to make a bigger push inland. Eastern solano still getting upper 80s to 90s. If youre anywhere else, youre in the 60s and 70s. The fog and low cloud deck is ramping up and going all the way out in the pacific there down to Southern California and looks like its here to stay. So only subtle changes daytoday. Morning low clouds clearing to the coast. Its taking longer today than we saw the last couple of days. Remember last week we were getting ready to go in a hot pattern. This week looks very quiet. Fog and sun is nice. 60s, 70s and 80s on the temperatures. Near average coast and bay, below for most locations now away from the coast. That pattern is going to stick and stay as we say as it takes us into the upcoming weekend. All right, steve thank you very much.
