Here in the bay area, there are 25,000 confirmed cases with 578 that said, two counties report triple digit increases in cases, monday was the last official tally day. The county had 173 cases. Santa clara county had 100. The city of San Francisco is on high alert for the recent surge in cases, the city may be added to the states watchlist. They saw a patient increase due to hospitals transferring infected people from imperial county. For now, San Francisco has a good supply of icu beds. How fast hospitalizations increase is really important. It gives us an idea of how many people have been infected, and how many are now coming to our attention in terms of the healthcare system. States Public HealthDepartment Reports 15,000 people working positive for the coronavirus, 89 of them have died. Public and private schools and Santa Clara County are scheduled to reopen next month. We want students and teachers to return to school as soon as possible, under the safest possible conditions. A 22 page rulebook on safety rules was released by the county, social distancing at all levels will be mandatory. Different age groups will follow other rules. They witness egregious acts of Police Brutality and racism. Lawmakers say it is time for change and reform. That means removing armed officers from campuses. This comes after nationwide protests from Police Brutality. The students are well represented and arrests by our Police Officers. Theres a dehumanization of children of color. The hometown of alameda recently decided to defund school officers. San francisco schools have cut ties with law enforcement. Oakland unified indicates that the Police Presence did not increase safety, and magnified racial disparities. Some site bomb threats, natural disasters are also reasons for having Police Officers at schools. The east bay state Nancy Skinner says there are alternatives like calling 911 or relying on school leaders. When i look at those citations and, as the reason why we need police and schools, it does not justify Police Presence. We are shown recently released body cam video that appears to contradict police explanations of how he died. My son cannot go away like nothing happened. The parents of christian in fremont want the deputies and the lieutenant in charge of their son held accountable for his death, while in custody at the santa rita jail. I wish we never called 911. He called 911 to get his son help, after he started acting erratically, and appeared to be suffering a mental breakdown after taking mushrooms a year ago in june. His body cam video released by the Sheriffs Department recently Shows Christians final hours. His head was covered with a spit mask. The lieutenant in charge decided to change into the cell door with his hands tied behind his back. The family said he was supposed to be checked on every 15 minutes. One of the checks was not done. The Sheriffs Department said that he managed to move his hands in front and use the chain to kill himself. The events depicted in the video are not sanctioned or within policy. We do not in any way perform, or condone those kinds of restraints. But the i asked why he would be ordered to be chained to the door and this type of restraint, if it is not the deputies. That individual operating outside of policy. Reporter in addition, christian was aggressive, claimed by officers. It shows him in a passive state. Christians mother said she has not been able to watch the videos. I want for the deputies, who did nothing, to also be responsible for the death of my son. What should happen . They should go to jail. They want them to be fired. Former atlanta Police Officer garrett roth who has been charged in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks has been set at 1 million. He said he was acting in self defense when he shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, the struggle was captured on dash cam video. Brooks grabbed an officers taser, and started running. He fired the taser as he ran away. And colorado, several Police Officers in the denver suburb of aurora are now unpaid leave. There were photos of then thats the memorial site of elisha mclean. The 23yearold African American man who died last summer, several days after he was put in a police chokehold. Reports show the photos showed the officers posing and reenacting the chokehold. Now, theres an investigation by police and internal affairs. Police are underway to rename Jack London Square to barbara lee square. Jack london was a known racist. He also promoted White Supremacy and his novels. They want to remove a statue of jack and replace it with a statue of east bay congresswoman barbara lee. A group of Asian Americans will call on the state for more funding, to fight racism against Asian American pacific islanders. The group says they have received 830 reports of discrimination and just the past three months. Harassment has been further stoked by President Trumps repeated use of the term kung flu. Starting today, new policy for the Fire District and the eight communities that they serve, firefighters will now only go into a burning building if human life is at risk. Because of underfunding, the district has three working fire stations that cover 250 square miles. That is down from having six fire stations a couple of years ago. A number of people depending on the Fire Services has grown to 128,000. There will be a Memorial Service today for fire captain david lutz. He died in a hiking accident. He leaves behind his pregnant wife, their three children, and his parents. He grew up in los gatos, he was only 33 years old. Oakland mayor libby shaft is joining 10 other mayors across the country in order to support a guaranteed Income Program to lift people out of extreme poverty. The city of stockton was one of the first to try a universal basic income. A study of the program found that low income people who were given an extra 500 a month spent it on basic needs such as food and clothing. The group of mayors supporting the idsa it will ease economic inequality particularly in communities of color. Guaranteed income, or what people call a second income is an idea that has been proven to be effective, costefficient and, something that will move people to economic security. The mayor of los angeles, atlanta, new york, and Tacoma Washington have all pledged to implement the program and their cities. Despite protests across the state, Governor Newsom is moving forward with a 202 billion state budget that contains 11 million in cuts. He signed the budget which will temporarily raise taxes on businesses and reduce spending on state worker salaries. The court system and public colleges and universities that, teachers, students, front line workers and other cities rallied against the cuts. Is californians struggling under the pressures of the pandemic, and the recession, racism and inequality, we are demanding that leaders commit to investing in our community, rather than giving billionaires and corporations a free pass. The budget has also relied heavily on the states Rainy Day Fund in order to reduce a 54 billion deficit. The governor is now looking to build on the states programs to shelter homeless during the pandemic. We are shown how Governor Newsom will try to turn the project room key into a long term fix. California governor gavin newsom is touting the success of project room key, the state plan started in april that is paying hotels to house the homeless. I could not be more proud of the effort in a few months to get 14,200 individuals off the streets and out of encampments and into units like this. The governor spoke at a pittsburgh hotel. We are at a facility, there are 131 rooms. Every single one of them is occupied with 164 individuals. They are getting support services and getting three meals a day. Reporter he says the temporary plan needs to be transferred to a permanent solution. We were able to sign a budget, but it did the following, it provided an additional one point 3 billion dollars for cities and counties to support programs like this. That includes 150 million to buy properties and 350 million for services to effectively transition people off of the streets and into homes. The governor said at the same time that he is transitioning project room key into project home key. Shelters and Supportive Services help homelessness. Ups has a backlog at a warehouse in oakland, and a Union Representative says the company has hired personal vehicle drivers to attempt to fix the backlog of packages. A report by Adobe Analytics says that online sales in april and may were seven percent higher than christmastime sales, in november and december, causing a backlog of packages. Ups is adding resources to fix the problem. At the ups Customer Service center near oakland airport, long lines are common as people try to track or retrieve packages.
