The owner brought back his staff friday for the First Time Since the shutdown to prepare for reopening. Cleaning, moving stations apart for social distancing, and even putting up yellow caution tape to keep clients from sitting too close. Just making sure that we were safe. Reporter only to learn that the city of pausing the reopening of businesses such as hair salons indifferently because of the surge in covid 19 cases. It was devastating. Especially because, you know, we havent had any income for three months. I dont know how much longer we can keep this. The savings are running light. Reporter in San Francisco General Hospital mayor linden breed spoke about the need to pause a reopening monday for businesses including nail salons, tattoo parlors and even the San Francisco zoo. Coronavirus has pretty much assured brisk business for shipping companies such as ups but one east bay lot has a back lodge of packages waiting to be delivered tonight. Tom baker tells us why the system is so overwhelmed. Recently teamsters local 70 representing ups drivers sent out a blistering letter to its members criticizing ups for overwhelming its workers with work from the growing mountains of packages brought on by the coronavirus. Theres too much going into the system and not enough going out, which is backing it up. Reporter marty freight, secretary of teamsters local 70 said in oakland, drivers are asked to deliver far more packages than they can handle. The driver may go out with 150 stops is now getting 300. Is not getting them done because he can only do so much. Reporter what happens when a driver cant deliver all those packages . The mecca goes back into the system and gets lost. What does the union see is one solution . Mac load the truck with enough that the driver can do reasonably and back off and dont process the freight until you know where its at. Do what you can do and be honest with the customers. Reporter currently when the packages are finally delivered the drivers get the blame and the nasty comments. For its part, ups and a statement defending its record as being on time the vast majority of the time. It also said ups is delivering volumes similar to the peak Holiday Shopping season with about 70 of our deliveries to residences compared to about 50 during the rest of the year as a result of the covid19 pandemic. As to any thoughts of drivers lounging, the union says that the ups tracking and Delivery System monitors their movements every second of every shift. Ups says it is hiring but training takes a while. Both sides are considering a proposal for the driver to have an assistant to actually deliver the packages to residences. Over just the last three days, Santa Clara County had a 23 increase in hospitalizations and San Joaquin County a 43 spike. In total, 15 counties seeing outbreaks and most were hospitals are seeing a sudden jump. We know as the numbers go up in the community it will take some time for those patients to manifest as actual hospital patients so we are planning a couple days to a week ahead. At john mier Medical Center its all hands on deck. Theyve done this before preparing the beds and rooms, routine medicals screenings and reducing hospital foot traffic. Asked how to keep the medical staff motivated. I havent had to tell them anything. I think people have come to appreciate working with one another and theres no question that our community has given us all that we could possibly need. I think people just got a little excited about being able to go out and mingle with one another. At some point, they just forgot about the importance of wearing the masks or washing their hands frequently. Reporter its those things doctors say will prevent more patients from filling these hospitals. Adapting their behaviors and educating one another on where we are at and where we are going. I dont think we need to go back to where we were by any stretch but there is a middle ground we have to find. Contra Costa Health Services saiz it is seeing a shift with more young people testing positive. Groups in oakland have sued the city over its crowd control measures during protests that followed the death of george floyd. Erickson oski has the Police Response to the lawsuit and how they are defending their actions. New documents filed in federal court detail the oakland Police Departments use of tear gas, projectiles and other crowd control tactics during the days of unrest following the killing of george floyd. Oakland police are limited on when they can deploy teargas but the Police Department said things became so intense, officers had to resort to more extreme measures. We will need additional, they are taking over pushing through the line. We are taking rocks and bottles. Reporter between may 29 and june 4, Oakland Police used to hundred six canisters of tear gas. 25 smoke grenades and 17 foam projectiles. 91 of the teargas canisters were used on may 29, the most turbulent night that also saw the killing of federal protective Services Officer david underwood. The use of tear gas on another group of protesters three days later has raised questions about whether police violated their policy. We want to stop the militarization of the oakland Police Department. It needs to be stopped across the country but we are particularly dealing with oakland here. Oakland city right lawyer filed a lawsuit earlier this month. Reporter in these last few demonstrations, they actually went out and caused the conflict. Police in riot gear deploy teargas on a group of protesters one block from department headquarters. The group was an offshoot of an earlier protest organized by students at oakland tech high school. The Department Said some in the group were throwing rocks and bottles at officers and repairing molotov cocktails. New body camera footage shows the police deploying smoke and gas on the crowd. Police said one bottle was thrown before the order to deploy the gas. I just took my first bottle. Reporter no other threat seen in the video. Oakland police say they used that 31 teargas canisters, four smoke grenades and three projectiles that day. If we want to take away the teargas, take away the use of flash bangs against people who are protesting. The Alameda County Sheriffs Office and u. S. A funeral held today for 22 yearold eric salgado shot and killed by chp officers in oakland earlier this month. The service took place today at Oakland Chapel of the chimes. Highway patrol said he was driving a stolen car when he hit one of their vehicles for the officers fired more than 40 rounds into his car. Salgados pregnant girlfriend was a wounded. The chp officers say they feared for their lives in the salgado family has an attorney now who disputes that. These officers jumped out of their car, they were in their cars, they werent in their cars, they were shooting from the side. The young man was shot multiple times in his back and his chest clearly suggests the officers were not in a position of danger at the time. Civil rights attorney john future.
