We did find one car and some chp officers right off the freeway at a gas station. So far, the chp has not said if it is a confirmed freeway shooting. New statistics show the number of coronavirus cases is on the rise both here in the bay area and all across california. Ktvus Sara Zendehnam joins us with more of those details. Reporter did morning, pam. The California Department of Public Health says the Positivity Rate means stable in the 14 day average. Hospitalizations show a slight uptick in the 14 day average. The Department Reports the following numbers. As of june 20th in california, there are more than 173,000 total cases of coronavirus. That is up for the 500 cases from the last reported. A day earlier. Nearly 3600 are in hospitals. That is the highest hospitalization since april 1st according to the chronicle. More than 1100 patients are in the icu. More than 5500 people have died in california from the virus. A combination of loosening shelter in place restrictions and an increase in testing is to blame for the uptick in cases. Health experts say they look at the rate of hospitalizations to better understand how the virus is moving. The state Health Department says more than 3. 3 million tests have been conducted. That is an increase of 84,000 tests over the prior 24 hour reporting period. When you see cases going up, the last thing you want to do is continue to open up your society. That is putting people at risk. One of the reasons we are doing all this testing is because testing is our eyes on the epidemic. Well, if we do enough testing, we can see where the pandemic is moving. Reporter as for worldwide numbers, the World Health Organization is reporting 183,000 new cases of the virus in just 24 hours. That is the largest oneday increase of new coronavirus cases. More than 54,000 of those cases are in brazil. The u. S. Is not far behind with the second largest number of cases in a single day with 36,000. As restrictions continue to be lifted, Health Experts still want everyone to remember all of those safety protocols. Wear a mask or, keep your distance, stay home as much as possible. Santa rosa police are investigating an incident between a driver and a group of protesters. What the [ bleep ] this happened as a woman drove her suv through the crowd. She told officers she just finished her shift as a nurse at a local hospital in the north bay and protesters stopped her car. At one point, someone allegedly threw a skateboard and a bicycle at her vehicle, breaking her windshield. Some say she intentionally drove into the crowd during a peaceful presentation and want her to face charges. Police say the driver is telling a much different story. From what she reported, she came scared, panicked, she had items thrown at her vehicle. She tried to get through the crowd as quickly as possible to get out of there. From our standpoint, aside from us arching down the street she was driving on, we did nothing to provoke her. The driver says one of the protesters punched her in the face through the open window. Police have not been contacted by anyone who claims to be struck by the vehicle during the incident. The San Francisco board of education is scheduled to vote tomorrow on a measure that would cut the districts financial ties to police. One dozen Police Officers currently patrol the campuses of San Franciscos public schools. Some school members. 2 statistics indicating those officers unfairly targeted africanamerican students. They want to redirect the money that goes to police to School Health and Wellness Programs instead. San Francisco Police had extra patrols at the legion of honor overnight. That is after the museum received reports that some of the statues outside the building would be vandalized. That is according to the San Francisco chronicle. The legion of honor is closed because of the pandemic. The paper reports that the staff was on a, quote, heightened state of alert after two statues in Golden Gate Park were pulled down on friday by protesters. One of those statues was the father euna perrault sara. Protesters brought down the statue of the priest who funded the mission system. Those statues have been targeted for years now. Critics say he forced native americans to stay admissions after they converted to catholicism or face a brutal punishment. The archbishop released a statement saying, quote, what is happening to our society, a renewed National Movement to correct the injustice of racism and Police Brutality in our country, has been hijacked by some into a movement of violence, looting and vandalism. That, again, from the archbishop. Two San Francisco supervisors are responding to the statues being taken down. They say that the city should rename to schools. Supervisor matt haney says there are schools named after Francis Scott key and euna perrault sara. These should be renamed so students feel safe and valued. The city removed a statue of Christopher Columbus near coit tower on thursday. Aaron peskin says he understands why the statue was taken down. He says that there are no plans to rename columbus avenue that runs through his district. Nascar is investigating after a noose was found in the garage of bubba wallace. He is the only africanamerican driver who races fulltime at the elite cup series. Just two weeks ago, he successfully pushed nascar to ban confederate flags at all nascar events. Nascar says it is outraged and that there is no place for racism in their sport. There is no word on any suspects. This is the second shooting in the capitol hill occupy protest soon in the last couple of days. Seattle police are releasing this body camera video from saturday as officers tried to locate the shooting victim, police say they were met by violent crowds that prevented officers safe access to the victims. A 19yearold man died. A 33yearold man remains in critical condition. Tyson foods is looking into claims that china has suspended poultry imports from one of its facilities after employees tested positive for the coronavirus. More than 200 workers at a tyson plant in springdale, arkansas contracted the virus. Tyson points out that global and u. S. Health organizations agree that there is no evidence the virus can be transmitted by food. 95 of those who tested positive at two arkansas plants where asymptomatic. Californias Wildfire Response plan is being affected for months now, Officials Say that they normally have one large base camp at each region of the state of california. This year, theyre planning to set up smaller base camps. That way, they dont have to do coronavirus testing on thousands of firefighters if someone does become infected. They are also expecting to call in the 747 supertanker sooner than usual to help put out some of the smaller fires. The Alameda County Health Department is alerting swimmers of a parasite of a water, and sand causing an itchy rash. Two cases of the rash have been reported from crown beach. Reporting on the county beach quality hotline talks about the danger signs. The feet and ankles might be irritated and itchy. Small red marks might appear. It is advised that you limit your contact with beach water and wet sand. If you do enter the water, rinse with fresh water. Experts stress there is no longterm problems. Thanks, coronavirus cases are continuing to rise in the bay area. 241 new cases in the last 24 hours, there are more than 19,000 confirmed cases of the virus here in the bay area. There are 525 deaths that have been reported. Statewide, there is more than 178,000 cases and more than 5500 deaths in california. According to the San Francisco chronicle, the number of people hospitalized due to the coronavirus reached its highest point over the weekend. At one point, more than 3500 people were in california hospitals with confirmed cases of the virus. The county saw the greatest increase since the mostly concentrated in Southern California and the central valley. The numbers are not a surprise as more restrictions are being lifted. The interfaith job training Nonprofit Group youth spirit artworks is behind the tiny village in an effort to help teenagers and young adults with housing insecurities. The city helped fund the project on higginbotham road near the open coliseum. They wanted to see this as a model for Housing Solutions to come and Community Organizations coming together and working together to better achieve a solution to the housing crisis instead of staying apart. The project is designed to be transitional housing starting with oneyear stays. The openingday has been pushed back to september because of the pandemic.
