At Stanford University doctors in the intensive care unit treating the sickest covid19 patients are taking a closer look at the drug dexamethasone to help improve patients chances of survival. Dr. Leandra rogers specializes in pulmonary and critical care. One of the most important things about the study is it seems to help very sick patients with covid19. Reporter on tuesday researchers from Oxford University released details on a clinical study, 2100 patients at random were given the steroid dexamethasone for 10 days. Results from the preliminary study found the mortality rates improved by 30 . This drug dexamethasone reduced the risk of dying by about one third of people and breathing machines, ventilators. And about 1 5 of people who did not need the breathing machines but did need oxygen in hospital. Reporter the drug is readily available and has been around for years used to treat arthritis and asthma. It is different from other treatments, remdesivir and hydrochloric from the target the virus. The steroid suppresses a patients immune system response to covid19. It decreases inflammation and that is what the virus does to very sick people and the people arrested raiders. This is only one study but it is clear from this study that what we know today is that dexamethasone will reduce the risk of death. Tremors jesse gary tells us how two School Districts are searching for a balance between what is best for students and educators and what is safe. Palo alto unified School Districts are exploring a return to campus for some students this august. Superintendent, don austen says educators will consider proposals that reflect our belief that the most important element of school is the connection between students and teachers. Everyone learned those connections are not powerfully replicated through distance learning. Teachers in the district are definitely eager to return to school as normal but, you know, with the pandemic, normal is going to be hard to replicate. Reporter Terry Baldwin says the current memorandum of understanding between the district and the Teachers Union calls for in School Learning for elementary School Students. One of the negotiation points in designing a curriculum for students whose parents decide to keep them at home. It is really time trying to find the schedule in a way that is going to work best for students but keep everybody safe and healthy. Bull Vallejo City Unified School district officials are considering similar steps. According to the superintendent, dr. Adam clark the only equitable way for us to deliver an education is for those students to come back to us for more time, not less time. Returning to the only, if possible, is a very appealing option but it is just not going to be possible for a large percentage of the community and to the extent it is possible it could endanger everyone. We are going to see warm weather right to the beaches which is often accompanied by the offshore flow or that red flood that is sort of north, northeast, north, north west wind directions of this would be north northwest. This would be north, northeast so you know what im talking bout. There are the highs. Tomorrow, some low 90s and mid 90s. 94 in brentwood, 93 in fairfield, high temperatures on thursday will be pretty close to these, not too far off. Then along the coast, fog should return on friday night into saturday. We will see how that goes. In the meantime, another warm day or a warm day tomorrow with another one to follow on thursday. It is not a heat wave, just going to get warmer and you will see this in the fiveday forecast from temperatures beginning to come up. Mike mccormick, one of the true gentlemen of the sport and when you talk about his career as, p amazing. He signed at the age of 17 with the new york giants, played as a teenager and when the giants moved to the west, the San Francisco giants in 1967, Mike Mccormick became the first giant picture ever to win the cy young award. He was 22 and 10 that year. The reported all times allstar died peacefully at his home in North Carolina on saturday. He had a long struggle with parkinsons disease. Like i say, a true gentleman, he was 81 years old. On a personal side i got to know Mike Mccormick pretty well over the years. At various giants event and all those fantasy camps through the years, he was just a great storyteller and one that stands out in particular, he knew i was a big beatles fan and told me about the time when the beatles played the last concert at candlestick park. He got the equipment manager because the giants were out on the road, to stay back and sign baseball for him. He kept it over the years, eventually auctioned it off. He used the money to help pay for one of his granddaughters college educations. One of the many stories he told me and i learned a lot about baseball from Mike Mccormick.
