Crews have removed the statue of confederate president Jefferson Davis from kentuckys capital building. Kentucky was ever part of the confederacy and fought for the union during the civil war. Last week u. S. Army officials said they were open to the idea of changing the names of 10 armored bases including fort bragg in North Carolina named after general braxton bragg. A similar discussion is happening in fort bragg named after the the city council will use its next meeting to discuss putting a name change for the town on the ballot in november. Joining us now is a professor of history at san jose state university. We have seen similar efforts before to remove the statues. Does something feel different to you about this moment and have we reached a turning point in this country where most people want them taken down . I do think we have reached a turning point. I think this is a really important conversation for us to be having. I hope this momentum carries forward. One concern i do have is the monuments on monument avenue is slowing down to the court system. In some cases, we are seeing a wave of protesters and people taking the statues down themselves. If you are going to go through the legal channels to have the statues removed, in many cases there are a lot of obstacles to get them removed. Yes, there are tremendous obstacles. I think that slow down take some of the momentum away from the people who were protesting. The good thing about all of this is that we are having the conversation about what these monuments mean. I think the question we need to be asking ourselves is how as a nation did we end up with so many towns, schools named after confederate generals and so many monuments to these people who took up arms against their will country. And that was going to be the next question. There are hundreds of statues and monuments of these confederate generals to in many cases it sounds were not the most skilled generals out there. But that is beside the point. How is it that we have so many of these monuments to confederate generals, bases named after these generals, towns including in california named after them. That came to be because of the concerted effort on the part of southerners and a lot of the organ is icing was done by southern white women. Organizations like the united daughters of the confederacy. They organize starting in the 1880s and into the early 20th century to push in the public a certain narrative of the civil war and a certain history that we call the lost cause. This is not an accurate history of the civil war. It is a mystical memory of the civil war. It helps southerners feel like they were restoring some of their honor that they lost. Those who defend these confederate symbols including President Trump, they say that the statues they pay tribute to history and Southern Heritage and they do not represent racism. How do you respond to that argument . Well, southerners themselves in the lead up to the civil war in the early days of the civil war were clear about what they were fighting for. They were fighting to maintain slavery. It is only after the civil war ends that you get this lost cause narrativcentral role. And what was motivating southerners. And so to talk about this as an issue of heritage is missing the context the how and the why all of these monuments were created in the first place and who was pushing them. And what they really meant. Well, as we talked about hundreds of these monuments still exist across the country and i was reading that many more have been erected in the past couple of decades. Obviously, this fight is far from over im sure you would agree. Absolutely. Another important thing to remember is most of these monuments went up decades after the civil war. They are very much removed from the work itself. They are more about this changing narrative of what the war meant. We have to leave this important conversation right there. We appreciate you providing context and insight. Professor of history at san jose state university. Thank you for your time.
