Ones that really need this. It is all about the food we eat, on this ktvu fox 2 special zip trip , the power of community. Good morning, and welcome to the nine, for a special zip trip all about food. Take a look at the line outside , they have been in business for almost 70 years in the lower district of right by the panhandle. But, the past few months have been unlike anything anyone or really any Grocery Store has ever seen. Take it all, the delicious things, take a look at all of the delicious things waiting for you once you get inside. This is the place to be if youre a big home cook or looking for something quick, we are talking abour food. Shining a bright spotlight on everyone who is keeping us fed. We are so glad that you are with us on this special zip trip. Normally of course we hit the road, we were all over the bay area last summer. This summer clearly, things are a bit different. I have my trusty zip trip magnet stolen off the refrigerator, and mike and sal, i will start with you. I talked a lot about food. Has your approach to food changed at all over the past three months or so . For sure. Im grateful that everything we open the refrigerator, i see what is in there. For the restaurants that have had to close, i feel terrible for those restaurants in our neighborhood, better able to stay open, lots of pueblo. I am very grateful that they went to work and were able to provide that still experience of takeout. Look i mean when you look at restaurants and Grocery Stores, this is an 800 billion business. Millions of employees across the country. When i think of those individuals getting up and every morning, going to the Grocery Store the word brave comes to mind. That is what they are. They are brave individuals to even with the gloves on and the masks, they are taking that risk. The everyday. So that we can get our essential supplies. They are taking the risk that they know they could possibly get coronavirus. My hats off to all of those individuals in the restaurants and Grocery Stores who have been there for me, and my family. They are doing it with a smile on their face. When i go into the store, everyone is smiling, they know you by name because i shop there all the time. They know all of the customers by name. It is really nice to go in and feel part of that community. For many of us, it has been fewer nights out for dinner as well. You alluded to that, more take out, more time in the kitchen this hour. Trenton will show us more about what home cooking has done, more people are doing some home cooking and trenton is a good cook. I have eaten her food, she is very good. We will show you how one hyper local Food Delivery Service is going above and beyond the call of duty, frank introduces us to the company that is in it to help both the customer and the restaurant. We will chat with San Francisco bay like athena, they worked with upandcoming entrepreneurs , especially women of color to help them build restaurants, bakeries, food trucks and bars. As we kick off this next zip trip, not entirely as we planned again doing it from our homes here, lets take a closer look at how the Food Industry right here in the bay area has changed over the last few months. From Grocery Stores to restaurants. Lets bring in frank joins us now live, to show us how we got here. Frank, good morning. Good morning, i think we can all say it has been quite a journey. Forms, Grocery Stores, restaurants, i think we can all say our essential businesses in our life, but that doesnt mean it has been business as usual. I have ever seen and i have been farming almost 40 years, this kind of uncertainty. From the farms where the food comes from, to the Grocery Stores that sell them. Brave new world, it is interesting. And frustrating. The restaurant that serves some of our favorite meals. This restaurant you are looking at tonight usually is complete a full. Reporter new rules due to covid19 are forcing the Food Industry to adapt. Most of our takeout, people are coming in and picking it up or we are doing it curbside. Reporter those changes come at a cost. We are down 70 of the normal business we do. Also being impacted our food banks, with long lines of people, many who just lost their jobs. We are on the front line. I believe when we punch through this coronavirus, i think we will now be considered first responders. Reporter even now, with restrictions slowly being lifted, and some economic help on the way, many say the key to recovery will be the communities support. Really looking forward to bringing business back into the city. I feel terrible for the local businesses that have been suffering. The good news is we are starting to see Outdoor Dining pick up, and we are moving in a good direction, Outdoor Dining now allowed in every county here in the bay area. San francisco by the way will begin Outdoor Dining today, Alameda County which has the most cases of covid19 has yet to determine a date. That is the latest, i am frank, ktvu fox 2 news. Lets go ahead back to the lower San Francisco and take you back to the city there, doors opened up here just a few moments ago. The workers at this family owned business are being treated these days more like celebrities and superhero. Lets bring in katie to introduce us to some of the people who are keeping us fed from the Grocery Store in the city. Good morning, claudine. Reporter good morning. Yes, it is like a family. Certainly in the early days of this pandemic and our shelter in place, and really to some extent, still for people now, Grocery Store workers are the only people we were seeing on a regular basis. We know we need them, they know it to. But honestly, being that essential, isnt always easy. Reporter it has been a lifeline in this pandemic. The Grocery Store has been the one place we know we can count on. I am glad they are here. Reporter may be the only place we have been able to go. With everything going on in the world, they are being seen in a completely new light. Reporter yes if you didnt realize before, how essential gross we workers are to our lives, we certainly do now. It is a term even they are getting used to. Never had anybody in my whole life that i can recall tell me i am essential. No, never. I was like we sell food, i just want my family, my family has done this for years. Reporter they have been here since 1956 and the job looks different today. It worries me. Every day we are kind of coming into contact with hundreds of people. Reporter today, we see the risks. They are just like us. Just like medical people. Reporter it is why ross managers monitors traffic flow. Reporter i tell people 15 to 35 times a day. Reporter it is why the Meat Department isnt his only concern. I was going around doing extra stuff like sanitizing doorhandles. It is why jamie is worried when she calls it a day. I have an 88yearold mother who i take care of that i have to wear a mask around her. Reporter going to work these days is hard. It is a lot more stressful and heavier. The weight of everything bearing down on you. Every once in a while, you do realize like once again i am 73 years old and i am out here taking a risk. Reporter while the world looks different through plexiglas, being here matters. Generally a lot of the people are just depressed. I am hearing that a lot from people who probably would never tell me that they were depressed. We are the bartender now since you cant go to the bar and talk to your bartender. Glad to be able to help anyone out and we do appreciate all of the thank youse. Thank you, have a good one reporter of course, an extra thank you, that helps, being patient if supplies arent there. That also helps. And of course, masks and social distancing both make a difference. It is part of protecting ourselves and also protecting those essential workers, letting them and reminding them to know that we are all in this together. Sal . Clotting, thank you. From fancy dining rooms to assembly lines, preparing takeout orders, we will show you how some restaurants have been adopting worst cooks, gasi mikaelian will talk with a local chef about the effort it takes to cook for your family and why mistakes arent the end of the world. Today we are honoring joe, owner of the supermarket in San Francisco. Sylvie and mike wrote in to say joe is their hero, because as Senior Citizens and most vulnerable in the code pandemic. Joe has gone above and beyond for us. His volunteer to shop for us every week, he brings not only what is on our list but always adds fresh fruits and vegetables. He also includes traits, such as our favorite kind of ice cream and brand of potato chips. All at no cost to us, despite our offers to pay. Congratulations a lot of you are relying on your Grocery Store to make food at home. We are cooking an awful lot. I know you have seen this all over insta graham, from banana bread to vodka, i had the chance to speak with lopez, he is a chef, author and partner at the san mateo restaurant. We talked about why so many people are spending so much more time in the kitchen these days. Making pizza, making bread, and baking cookies, seems to be sort of universally appealing things for people. Why do you think that is . It feels empowering to bake a loaf of bread. It is a staple most people buy. When you see these videos on youtube saying here is how you can make the bread, youre like i can make bread . And then they do it. It is one of those things i thinks helps people feel good about themselves. It is an expensive. It is a fun project to do with kids. Baking is very familyfriendly. Were overstocking stuff at home and bananas go bad when you have tons and tons of food. A good way to use them up is making banana bread. Baking in general is an inviting thing for families; especially when kids are home from school because baking is something that kids can participate in. Dumping ingredients, measuring flour, mashing the bananas. I think that explains banana bread. People have more time now. Making a sourdough starter can take a couple weeks and baking the actual loaf of bread is a multiday project. Even once you have that starter. So, i think it is fun for people to have a longterm project now that they have a little bit of time at home. I recently made the vodka from new york times. It took three days and my boys devoured it in an hour. It is something i never tried before. That is the nature of cook cooking. He says he is getting a lot of response to his videos on youtube. I am making a grilled cheese. No fancy camera or kitchen crew, just a home cook with a go pro. What i kind of want to sort of recapture with the videos i am doing is that i grew up watching people like julia, even some of the early food network people. They were doing everything live. They were talking to an audience, they are cooking live and they are messing up from time to time. This is a very loose feeling. A few weeks ago i posted a video where i was making a pizza and a completely tore in half while i was putting it into the oven. I still posted is. It tasted fine. I posted the video. I think i called the video doesnt matter, still pizza. No matter what, it is going to be good. When i posted that, people were like yeah, i did that to my pizza last week, a lot of people came forward with stories of their own failures. A lot of people were saying it is so good to see you mess up because i did this exact same thing before. Now i dont feel so bad about doing it. Helping people feel okay about messing up, is really almost more satisfying than showing them how to cook a really good meal. I showed you my bagels yesterday, i burned one to a crisp this morning. Is a charcoal briquette. It happens. The cooking is like riding a bike. You are going to fall, or fail, in the beginning. Once you get the basic skills you need, to have confidence in your abilities, you can cook someone you love dinner, you know what i say, if someone cooks you dinner, it means they love you. On the subject of dinner, i know it is early but i have shared a story and my familys recipe for one of our familys favorite dishes on my. Is of course just kebab. We have talked about how i love cooking, if you would like to more about kebabs and apple pie and why it is the perfect meal, head over to our page tran03. Com and the ktvu mobile app. Youre a big cook, are there any family dishes that you are creating yourself, now at home because her whole family cant all get together these days . Well, i have learned how to make my dads enchiladas which are very good, and also during this pandemic, i have taken a little risk in the kitchen, i got a little sous vide thing, so i am doing needs, and i will start writing my own beef pretty soon. I am trying to get intricate because we are at home, i dont get to go out. You know, we get the take out sometimes. We dont get to go out and sit down. I am trying stuff. I am trying stuff. You guys have stepped up your game. My game is still the same, which is no game. When it comes to home cooking. Before the pandemic, i did cook a little bit here and there. But, you know in the end, with my wife now home, working from home, she doesnt really like me in the kitchen, which i respect. She is like just get out, i got it. She is a wonderful chef. What do you say . I take a step back and let her go. She has deftly stepped up the game, i mean the other day we had a pork tenderloin. It has been fun to see her in the kitchen, doing this, because she loves it. It makes her happy. It makes the entire family happy, of course when she is happy. Coming up next right here on the summers as if trip, your next meal on demand, at your front door. We will show you a company in San Francisco that takes food delivery one step further for both recipients and the business. First, Financial Hardship during the pandemic is exponentially higher for people are really struggling to make ends meet. We will hear from the south bay nonprofit working with hotels, stadiums, and other venues to make sure a single morsel does not go to waste. Many people taking dupixent saw clear or almost clear skin. And had significantly less itch. Dont use if youre allergic to dupixent. Serious allergic reactions can occur, including anaphylaxis, which is severe. Tell your doctor about new or worsening eye problems, such as eye pain or vision changes, or a parasitic infection. If you take asthma medicines, dont change or stop them without talking to your doctor. So help heal your skin from within and talk to your eczema specialist about dupixent. If your financial situation has changed, we may be able to help. And other frontline workers deserving of record recognition is courtney, an employee at luckys Grocery Store. Courtney, a woman named lori wrote in and says that you are her hero. Because she has not missed a single day of work amid the current pandemic. She is the most dedicated and positive employee you will ever meet. You will never find a more happy and generous person than courtney, thank you for all you do. Courtney, from all of us here at ktvu, thank you again for what you do there at luckys. W a south bay nonprofit that is changing the way it works, to really help feed the people out there during this pandemic. Hunger at home. That is the organization typically gathering surplus food from hotels, we are talking about Event Centers and stadiums. Now it is providing meals to tens of thousands of people of employees who are currently out of work. The founder and chief executive of hunger at home, is yule sterner, he joins us live this morning. You will, good morning to you good morning, thank you very much. Of course, look, i know you are doing wonderful things out there, before i ask you a question, i have something to tell you right here, because i know you rely on a lot of donations, especially financial donations and right now out of the gate, we are very happy to announce a 1000 donation to your organization, and this thousand dollars, i want to mention comes from the summer of gordon led by chef gordon ramsay, that show airs again tuesdays and wednesdays right here on ktvu but right out of the gate, it is a start and we will be raising money throughout the day for you guys there, but 1000 coming your way, from the summer of gordon. That is awesome thank you, what a great way to start out. No kidding. We have more coming. And well talk about that a little bit later. When the pandemic hit, tell us how you how to change your motto or how you how to operate differently. You but. Normally we operate through large stadiums, resorts, different food and Beverage Industry and we donate directly to the nonprofits. March 19 came and everything has changed. We came from a distribution, to a ma. Those same entities for levi stadium, Team San Jose that used to work with us throughout the year, now we are furloughing and laying off the local hospitality and community. Immediately all of the food that they had prepared for events and banquets, they donated. We had tons of products coming into naturally next step all of the Distribution Centers that donate to the Hotel Hospitality , they werent having the requirement and we got a large, huge amounts of donations from distributions. And then the third and final was the farms. They obviously had grown and prepared and they support the distribution center, so it went from hotels and resorts to distribution to farms. Those same hotels, all of the executive chefs, that were furloughed, came in and started to help us produce meals. And it became full circle. To date we have done 220,000 meals, produced and distributed to the local community, since march 9. Just comparing and contrasting the demand, lets say back in january to the demand that you are seeing just last month or right now. Oh, my goodness. A complete shift. The same individuals that were working in the hotels, are now waiting hours in line for groceries, for substance for the week. We have heard so many stories that if it wasnt for the opportunity to come in, there wouldnt be food. The scary part is since january, we had tons of food coming up. Tons of product, however we were distributing that. We werent preparing. Our model has changed for supporting nonprofits, to supporting community and our guideline is anyone in need. We are people helping people. We are getting a little excited back here, it is because we are so excited to do what we do and support others. What about your reaction . When you see all of these hundreds of vehicles lining up, do you get a chance to just sit back, i know youre busy but do you just ever sit back and watch this happening . How does that make you feel . I feel absolutely blessed and the fact that we can and we have the opportunity to support those in need, and we are not supporting just a segment, it is important to understand we are supporting communities and people in need. When i see signs that started out march 19, all of a sudden we are seeing signs. Now, banners. No individuals holding up saying thank goodness you were able to ride with our family. It makes you feel inside that you can provide a little bit of love, a little bit of hope for families that are suffering so much right now, in so many ways. A lot of the individuals coming through, my past job, i was a general manager at the convention center. My work partner was the executive chef at levis and we are seeing the same team we worked with for years coming through our line, also coming in and helping us to create and prepare the meals and receive them. Awesome. Awesome. Yule, founder and chief executive of hunger at home, you are an inspiration and thanks for joining us, again we are raising money for you, and we are starting with that thousand dollars, have a great rest of the day, have a great weekend. A true inspiration, thank you thank you, remember to leave it better than you found it we appreciate you and again all the support we can get, food donations to monetary donations, we appreciate it. Thank you ktvu fox 2 news any time, you will. Thank you, we are happy to announce that thousand dollar donation to hunger at home, we arent done with that yet. If you want to be able to donate or if you want to donate as well, we have a way for you to keep those donations coming. Visit ktvu. Com giving day, anytime, throughout the day today. Still to come, celebrating the power of community, sal takes us to the north bay to check in with a restaurant that turned its whole operation upside down. How they adapted to the covid 19 regulations. Then, sued ondemand. How Delivery Services have really changed during the pandemic. And the one Delivery Company in the north beach that is going the extra mile, while logging all of its regular miles. Welcome back to our special zip trip celebrating the power of community, this is for letty foods falletti foods. They have been feeding families for a long time. Generations. It has never been more important than during this coronavirus pandemic. I frequently have stopped here. On my way into Golden Gate Park for a picnic, boom, boom, you stop here, you get some provisions and then youre on your way to Golden Gate Park. It is a great place, and i am glad it is still there. We also want to give a shout out to russ, of dale cox distribute in, in petaluma. He says his fatherinlaw is his hero because during the beginning of the covid19 outbreak, he was every day at 5 30 am delivering food to Grocery Stores without his hard work and willingness to expose himself, many Grocery Stores in Sonoma County would not have been stocked with adequate food supplies, for those in need, russ cox, shout out to you, and good job there. Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do. Today, a fine dining restaurant in healdsburg will open up to in person dining after weeks of doing only take out. Restaurants are now beginning to come out of a very challenging time, and still face hurdles as we get back to what they call this new normal. Reporter things have changed for the rustic fine dining eatery in downtown healdsburg. Because of the pandemic, the fancy dining room has become a place where the food is boxed and bagged, ready for to go orders. Look at this. Reporter when i last visited i was able to go in, sit down and try some of the delicious dishes created by the chef and his staff. Now, we met virtually as he explained how things are different. How does a restaurant make it through Something Like this . We have a lot of tenacity. To be honest with you, i think the best part is honestly our community. It is what gets me excited, it gets me out of bed in the morning. Think about what we are. We are social creatures. We dont want to sit at home by ourselves. We want to hang out with her friends and go have dinner together. We want to have a glass of wine together. We want to break bread together. Right now we cant do that, but we can in a very small microwave. We can produce food and sit at home and experience it at your house. We do that to go thing. In our mind, it gives people the ability to kind of not worry about the reality, of what is going on out there in the world but instead, just for an hour, half hour, 45 minutes, bread together. Reporter on the menu this evening, crested whole chicken with lemongrass and turmeric scented rice, and grilled eggplant. Wine is also available to go, and food is taken out two vehicles so people dont even have to get out. He says even the restaurants including his, will soon reopen to in person dining, he understands some may still not want to go out. For this reason he says his to go meals will continue for the foreseeable future, and in person dining will include appropriate social distancing. I think right now is where every restaurant is doing whatever they can to bring a sense of normality back to our daily lives. Reporter norma is one of the longest employees, she says she is simple for being able to work especially since so many of the restaurant worker friends havent been so lucky. They are working fewer hours, and some have no work at all. Reporter again, tonight is the night therefore healdsburg, they are going to open to in person dining, i spoke with the chef, he is very excited, i think a lot of restaurant owners, are excited about having restaurant customers, faceto face, it will be different, they will be spaced out. There will be new things to do, there will be some temperature checks. It is something and i think a lot of people are excited. Mike, i know that you have been doing take out with some of your restaurants and you might actually, might even want to go into a place that has appropriate social distancing. I have been craving it. Over the years, my wife and i who once worked in restaurants here in the bay area, we have made a lot of relationships in that industry. Good friends in fact i got a message this morning from a friend who works at sams and says we are open, lets go. Come out to the deck. Take a ferry over. You build those relationships. The restaurants are not just about the food, and the delivery of it, the execution of it, but it is about that relationship, it is about interacting with those individuals. To think they have been unemployed for the last few months and i know a lot of people cant do it and that is important to know, but if you can, it is important, to get out and support these establishments that have been here in the bay area for so long. Absolutely. Certainly if you have personal relationships with the owner of a restaurant or a longtime server there, but for me, the thing i love, when we go out to eat is that i get to sit and listen in on the conversation next to me or i get to wiggle my finger at the cute baby across the way. It is about people. You are having a communal experience. Even if you take that same pad thai and have it delivered or bring it back to your house, the pad thai is great, for me that is 50 of the equation. The other 50 is definitely the people who surround you as you are having it. Definitely going to make that a plan for my family very soon. Lets talk about shopping for food and how that changed. Many of us definitely noticed that some prices for food items are going up, something such as flour we are injured very we were in very short supply. That is beginning to change. The outbreak really has forced america to take a good hard look at its Food Supply Chain, and what is happening inside usa fracturing plants. Many reports have said that people working in very close quarters in those manufacturing plants have suffered covid19 outbreaks. Lets talk more about our food and how it gets to our dinner table or to a restaurant by bringing in anthony, director of Kitchen Table advisors, thank you for being with us, anthony. Thanks for having me. It is great having you. This pandemic has really forced me personally and all of us to examine where does that bag of flour come from before i grab it off the store shelf . Or what about that perfect new york strip that magically arrives on my plate at the restaurant . Absolutely. Sorry, gasia, what was your question in there . I was going to say, i think it is time that we take a look at the Food Supply Chain in this country. Yes, i absolutely agree. As we are seeing right now in contrast to the risks that we see in long and Global Supply chains, what we are seeing in places that have shorter supply chains, Farmers Markets, local independent Grocery Stores, we are seeing more resilience. Farmer stepping up, farmers working together to be able to do what they have been doing for a long time. Which is grow healthy food and feed our communities. Ive been going to Farmers Markets for 15 years here in the bay area. It was a different experience the first time i went. After the covid19 pandemic. It was very quiet, it was very peaceful, there were a lot of restrictions in place. But my Farmers Market was very much alive. S, abs yes, absolutely. I go every sunday morning. Absolutely i think you are having another conversation around community, people and kind of i think the farmers and the Farmers Market managers have done a good job of keeping us safe with social distancing guidelines and masks and all of those things. Yes i think that farmers and Community Members are just like one to be able to know where their food comes from and be able to have a more secure line to good healthy food, and at the same time, it is the community and the resilience that we can find that is so important in giving hope and inspiration in this time. For many people, a Farmers Market is sort of the perfect all day saturday outing. For other people it is a complete luxury. To think of making a special trip to go to the Farmers Market, maybe pay eight dollars for a dozen perfect eggs from the farmer, how do you suggest that people who do not have the luxury of either time or finances or transportation, to still support local farmers and get the best food for themselves and their families. Absolutely, there is a lot of ways to support local farmers beyond going to the Farmers Market which is a great option. I can offer 3. One is the agriculture, and independent Grocery Stores that have relationships with farmers. Our family gets a csa against agriculture which is a weekly box of organic vegetables, that is to leverage your neighbors house and the last three months you have seen a number of boxes that we go pick up go from like 10 to 12 per week, it is a great relationship with the local farm, if you can go to the Farmers Market. A second, seeing a lot of Community Driven mutual aid efforts. I know a woman that is volunteering to go to the Farmers Market once a week, to buy produce for five or 10 families and delivered to their homes. Also know that a couple in Silicon Valley that has organized dozens of families, to essentially do a buyin club. To work with a couple of small organic farms, so people have the opportunity to band together with their family, friends, neighbors, to participate in something, to initiate Something Like this or participate in something that might be existing in your community. Blasting of the local independent Grocery Stores, there are many in the bay area that have to have direct relationships and so folks are curious, ask questions about where their produce is coming from and support the grocers that are buying directly from farms. That is another way that you can support the local farm community. What is the number one change he would like to see for the industry coming out of this pandemic . That is a big question. I think that there is a couple things on a couple different levels. I think folks seeing farmers and farmworkers and as essential workers, that compassion and empathy, i think that is super important. And at the end of the day, you know, 80 or 90 is latino immigrants. Many of them, undocumented and mixed status families. Many underpaid and undervalued especially in big agriculture. So if one of the things that i want to see, israel respects and dignity for the people who grow our food, for the farmers and the farmworkers. And that will require really big structural change in our society. Talking about Affordable Housing for everyone, and universal healthcare, and also things like immigration reform, and Police Violence and black and brown communities, these are the kinds of you know, they are big things, but these are the kinds of things that will bring dignity and respect to these important folks in our community thgrowing the food. Every time we pop a strawberry from watsonville in her mouth i tell my boys, someone picked that bury, treat as well. Thank you so much, anthony, director of Kitchen Table advisors for joining us today. Thanks, so much jordache, they have all been thriving during this pandemic as orders have strict. Services take a healthy cut, of the pie. Frank, back with us once again this morning and frank there is one Food Delivery Service out there that is 100 free. It is getting pretty good reviews. Boy is it ever, mike. Is terrific. North beach delivers is now in its eighth week. It has given some San Francisco restaurants a big lift when they needed it the most. I spoke with the founder, danny, about all of its success and how it all works. North beach delivers is a program that we started where each week we featured different restaurants and the key is that we are actually providing them a team of volunteers to do the delivery, free of charge for them. We equip our volunteers with e bikes and with protective equipment, and we are actually taking all of the orders from the restaurant out to the Community Come out to the neighborhoods, and it has grown now we are in our eighth week and each week we are providing the restaurant with a b 40 or 50 orders, it has always been the biggest night that they have had since the pandemic started. And it has really grown. It has been a really exciting volunteer driven effort. Okay, so if i am if you are out there and i live in the north beach area, and i want to take part, how do i do it . Each week we put up the menu for the restaurant. That is northbeachdelivers. Com. We have expanded now, so we are doing deliveries to chinatown, all along the embarcadero. You just go each week and we have a menu on there, you select what you want, you select when you want it delivered, we give you half hour window, and we will drop it off, we are doing thursday night deliveries each week. I bet the restaurants love you guys, what has been the reaction . It has been really positive. Restaurants are going through a really difficult time right now. Just to have one evening of positivity, is so fantastic. We are averaging now, where we can give them about 2000 in incremental revenue each week, because of this, because the community has been so supportive, it is the biggest night and it has been so wonderful to see some of these places open back up, it is a shortterm fix but a shot in the arm. Honestly, that is so needed right now. They will take all of those shortterm fixes that they can get. Absolutely, how about the volunteers . Who are these wonderful people . The volunteers are coming from all corners of the community. We started with four or five weekly and we are not to the point where we are getting eight or 10 or 12 each week. People of all ages, people of all backgrounds, just people really looking to do something tangible each week to help, and you know, they are volunteering a few hours, they are getting exercise, sometimes they are working, sometimes they are hopping on bikes. It is something positive that they can do right now. It is something that they can contribute to. Occasionally get fed maybe . Yes very often, there will be, the restaurants will be generous and we have to do some taste testing to make sure it is good. Is always great. Stay tuned, that is one of the benefits danny tells me they have raised over 11,000 and eight weeks for the restaurant and by the way, if the driver gets tipped, delivering the food, all of that money goes back to the restaurant as well. It is definitely 100 , he also told me, he said it has been a huge success once the pandemic has come, and gone, and it cant happen soon enough. They will continue the service, helping out one restaurant a week in San Francisco. That is the very latest. I am frank. Sal, we will send it to you. Up next, it is excruciating trying to keep your cafcor restaurant going during this pandemic. But, what about building one from scratch . I will chat with a local nonprofit that works to ensure women of color get just that chance. Plus, we are going to wine country, mike with the owner of the small winery run by a big family, about the challenges of operating during the covid19 pandemic. Our frontline fruit workers have been working with everyone stay stocked up on essential goods. Today we are honoring armando, he works at the safeway in the diamond district. Shauna says her son is her hero, because he manages to complete his shift all the while making the customers feel safe and appreciated, always with a smile, and how you doing . He is my hero for life, armando, nice work a San Francisco nonprofit is working to build equity and business ownerships for women, immigrants, and people of color in particular it helps Small Businesses in the Food Industry realize their dreams. Lets bring in the Groups Program manager, to chat about la cocina. Thank you for being here, la cocina is probably like every other entity experiencing some challenges during covid19. What are those challenges . Thank you for having us here. I mean there is so many, really. But, first and foremost, that our industry has been totally disrupted. And peoples ability to earn a living, and the traditional channels by which they accessed you know, Sales Opportunities or at the moment, they are all but gone. Ady hard enough. And especially for who you may not have the resources. How do you help them and what extra things have you had to do, during this time . I mean, so we support people first in generating an idea and flushing out that idea and concept. And we support them in the process of formalizing the food businesses that obviously includes getting the right permits, that are needed. And kind of finding access to capital. So how much money do they need to formalize and where can we find that money . And then we provide them access to affordable commercial kitchen space and lastly, access to Sales Opportunities. You know, that has been really hard to come by at this particular moment in time. You know, we are lucky that we have our shared commercial kitchen space and we can make that at the moment available to our entrepreneurs for free, to mitigate some of the cost of running a business. When the revenues have been so greatly reduced. So that is one of the ways we have also created a Community Food box, so anybody in and around the bay area can go on our website and order a food box. For a family of two, or a family of four, and it is made up of really delicious foods from all over the world. My grandmother made tamales and propose a she sometimes would give them to relatives or maybe under the table sell them, so this actually is something that if you have a woman or a man or whoever who is making tamales or Something Like that, and to think these are good, i can get a business going, you can help them do that, right . Yes, that is exactly what we do. We were born out of the informal writing informal economy thriving informal economy. They have earned a living for a long time. It is a way that i hope people continue to earn a living, but also for folks who want to formalize that and have a little bit more security as to sort of where the next paycheck is coming from or even grow that to the next level, that is what we are here to do. That is what we hope to do. Real quick, how can people become more aware of maybe they can go to your website, where the Small Businesses that you are helping to pop up, how can they find, they can just come to your website and find businesses like this . Yes, absolutely. All of the information that folks will need in order to support businesses is right on her website, i mean we, by going on there you will see a list of all of our businesses graduates, and current businesses, where you can find them, we can redirect you towards their website, we would love to say at la cocina that folks have three opportunities a day, to make an impact, to vote with their dollar, and for us those opportunities are breakfast lunch and dinner. Particularly in a time like we are in today, it is important to sort of put our money where our mouth is. And support this sort of business that represents the sort of diversity we want to see in the world. Okay, thank you for joining us, youre doing good work and thinks for being on mornings on 2. Thank you so much have a good one today, is a very big day, especially in Sonoma County because tasting rooms can open, six feet apart but they dont have to serve food. That was a stickler for especially the smaller wineries, they never did that in the first place. Look at the overall picture across the bay area, napa, Sonoma County, the big boys, the major wineries, more likely that they will be okay. The smaller wineries, we are talking about it has been a tough fight to stay afloat and is going to be a tough fight for the next year, if not longer. A small napa valley winery with a big heart, a big family, all field by husband and wife with a passion for the grape and for the glass. 80 of our business has been impacted. Definitely. Miriam, says she and husband, juan, started the in 2 people are going to be g scared to come back to napa, or go into tasting rooms, and then we are so small, that the only way i am going to be able to really maintain and differentiate myself with the statistics that are going on about wine cells and the wine industry, are going to be to personally attend my tasting room seven days a week, this has been extremely detrimental to everybody, large and small, wineries, hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. It has been devastating. Lindsay, is president and ceo of visit to maple valley. She says prepandemic, tours and revenue from napa county, 2. 2 billion. That by 70 , in the county is looking at 1. 5 billion in losses for the year. To promote the wineries, small and large, visit napa valleys doing things its never done before. Dont proactively advertise during this time period, we will be doing that for the first time and really trying to rebuild visitation, to this valley overall, to our wineries and restaurants and hotels. Another thing we are doing is helping to promote road trips within the valley, some people, and they always go maybe to young phil but have never been to calistoga or they always come to downtown napa and havent explored helena or american canyon. I think one of the opportunities for us coming out of this is to make sure that people know that we are a valley of five towns with so many off the beaten path hidden gems, great things to explore even if you have been here many times, we have hundreds of wineries that he may not have seen and so we are going to try to help encourage people to come visit us explore their own backyard, but get off the beaten path in addition to the tried and true wonderful experiences that we always are able to provide. Miriam, says the family is strong and still has the drive, and the faith but she knows it may take more than working seven days a week. In order to get back to her rose, her paino, to all of those, who once came to visit before. We had great faith, our faith is big but we do have roller coaster moments. I had a meltdown a couple days ago. Where i am just like my goodness, we still have to pay our mortgages. We still have to stay afloat. We still have bays that are coming in. Saving the family farms here in napa, we are part of the mexicanamerican association, so amongst the 2 organizations, we are putting our Heads Together to how we are going to get past this and work with each other and do business with each other, and hopefully not go under. Continue to keep our legacy and our hard work going. Those tasting rooms are huge, especially for those smaller wineries, most of their bottle sales actually take place in those tasting rooms. So, they are not in restaurants compared to the bigger wineries out there. Also i asked visit napa valley like when do they expect to get back to that 2. 2 billion in tourism revenue that they were having prepandemic, and lindsay said it is going to be about two years. Gasia, i recommend everyone when they go wine tasting, this is a tip i pass along, if you go to one of the bigger ones, i always pull an employee aside, establish that relationship and i ask because usually they are local, i say what is the one off the road . The smaller one you recommend that is a great taste . They will offer it up and usually thats tasting is not only cheaper, but sometimes it is better. Nice you can feel so good spending that money. Stay with us, more on our food zip trip after this. Thank you for joining us on the zip trip, we will do another one and 2 weeks. I hope you enjoyed it. We look forward to seeing you on june 26 goodbye now Wendy Williams show. [cheers and applause] now, heres wendy [cheers and applause] wendy thank you thank you, welcome to my show.
