There i think it is very easy for any of us to be fooled by fake accounts. Bots, which are computer programs pertaining to be real people are one part of the problem, but actually they are a tiny portion of all of the disinformation and misinformation agents out there now, heres wendy right now. [cheers and applause] one example of how any of us could get confused, in 2016 and 2017, the ceo of twitter retreated information from a person that claimed to be a civil rights advocate but was actually a russian troll over a dozen times. It could really happen to any of us, even if we think we are [cheers and applause] tech savvy. One of the things you talk about is, you know, we could be wendy hi. Spreading this information, but what if it comes from a trusted thank you for watching our show. Source . You know, a lot of times i will look for the blue checkmark, for example, if its a journalist, and then i will feel a little bit more comfortable retreating Something Like that. What are some of the things we could do to unwittingly spread misinformation . The first thing you need to do is, Everybody Needs to take a breath. We need to pause the slowdown, because the thing advantage of is our emotions. If you have an emotional response to something you see online, you love it, it really supports your side of an argument, or it outrages you, pause. Walk away from the computer for the moment. They are trying to tap into you feeling so upset that you press retweet, share, and amplify the voice. Thats step one. Step two, it is really about, okay, come back to the computer, come back to the phone, instead of trying to figure out whether that claim that you are reading is true or not, thats really hard for any of us to figure out in the moment anymore. Instead, look at the source of that information, and if the source is somebody who is a friend with a blue checkmark, find out what their source is. Because it is about sources now. Thats how we can get to the spread of this mint for information. To check a source, pull up their profile. Look to see, have they been around for a while . Turns out last week, some of the folks spreading disinformation about the blackout in d. C. That happened during the protests actually came from accounts that had only been around for three days. So look how long it has been around. Look to see, you know, what they were tweeting about two months ago, and if thats in line with what they are tweeting about today. If it does not seem to have an honest human personality, dont amplify their voice. Because of this misinformation, social media platforms, the pressure is being put on them to somehow moderate this. At facebook, youve seen in the news, some of this misinformation, twitter has been deleting accounts that were fake. What can social Media Companies do to help . I think lot more, but i don trust that they are going to do whats necessary. I think a lot of the conversation about adding a flag to tweets by the president , saying that they were, you know, inciting hate, theres not really a lot of proof that thats going to make a big difference in slowing down the spread of disinformation or misinformation online. What would really slow it down is if these companies all put into place those speed bumps that we talked about. Be for example before allowing you to retweet something, forcing you to look at the profile picture and the image, and the details about the person who is spreading information. But these companies dont want to do that, because frankly, they make money by having us spread this disinformation. The more outreach there is online, the more money that facebook and twitter make. So really, unless they grow a conscious, or the laws change in the united states, i dont know that we can really count on these companies to help us out. We have to take on the responsible lady for ourselves. Jeffrey, we are going to have to leave it there. Jeffrey fowler, a columnist from the Washington Post, thanks. You bet.
