Ktvu fox2 news. A lecturer at princeton university, you heard President Trumps comments a short time ago finally coming out and addressing the country. What did you make of his s tone as he tries to bring calm . I am concerned about it. And i am really not an extremist with the saints. I believe in our government institutions. I do not think we are on the cusp of a dictatorship or anarchy. Deploying the military and insinuating you might do that whether governors are handling the situation or not or regardless of whether they asked for this help is a serious issue. Military response to civilian protesters is a serious historic issue. I think we need to treat this with the seriousness that it warrants. I will say what i heard from the president s message was heavy on law and order. I understand where that is coming from. Heavy on the domination and on that New York Times call that was collected earlier. And a lot of this message of strength. I think that people do want to hear about peacefulness and reconciliation and he did not mention race or the conversation and were not hearing about Police Reform and what were going to do going forward. It is a serious situation. Absolutely. You did not hear from the president any attempt to address the broader issues within our society that certainly need to be dealt with year. Is a tough for the president , when he tweets what he has we did over the weekend, he cain s songs and he threatened the people could potentially be shot who were protesting on the streets. When he tweets one thing and tried to strike a different own when he addresses the country, does he have any standing at that point . I think you hit the nail on the head. People are looking at these remarks from the perspective of seeing those streets this weekend which i think were inappropriate and really concerning for a lot of people. And there is Good Research on this. One of my colleagues at princeton has a really great new Research Piece out. But what we see is that the party that gets violent, the group that gets violent Weather Police or military or protesters or rioters, those people lose public opinion. Americans do get scared. It also applies to rioters and people might get scared and they might turn to a president with law and order in their message like they did with nixon in 1968. That also goes for police and military officials. When we see confrontation coming from police especially against Peaceful Protesters, people will react poorly to that. That will have a backlash effect. I do not think President Trump will be looked upon kindly if he pushes this message continually of force without also balancing it by supporting the rights of protesters and looking for a solution going forward. So with that being said, the Presumptive Democratic nominee, joe biden, we saw him over the weekend and today meeting with members of the africanamerican community. He had a call with mayors across the country. He seemed to be trying to fill the vacuum of leadership when we were not hearing from President Trump during this unrest. Do you think joe biden was effective in stepping into that role . It is hard to say. It is hard to measure. Joe biden does not have nearly the microphone that donald trump does or nearly divisibility. I still think that this election is about donald trump and what he does and biden does serve as a contrast, but the selection is very much a referendum on the president S Performance both with covid and now this unrest. And the chaos that we are seeing in our country that we havent for decades. That will be a judgment of the president too. He needs to look at his role from an historic perspective and take it as seriously as he needs to. We are dealing with human life and the world is watching. Certainly. We will leave the conversation there. We always appreciate your thoughts and your insight. Were starting a new week and lets check on the conditions with our meteorologist. Nice to see you. Americans admit a pandemic that has killed thousands and taking a devon stating financial to go are now facing questions about race in america. Dr. , thank you so much for being here. Emotions were already raw from the coronavirus and the shutdowns and here we are in the midst of another national crisis. Absolutely. I think that right now people are feeling a myriad of emotions. Everything from anger, outrage, fear, anxiety and trauma. And the fact that this is absolutely impacting our communitys Mental Health and people are starting to feel the very real consequences of what is happening in our world. And so what is your advice for all of us in regards to coping with this the best we can . I think we always need to be paying attention to our mental we feeling . What are we thinking about . How much information are we taking in . When do we know is time to stop that . We can become traumatized by these videos, by the posts on social media, by what is being covered in the news. And so it is important for us to be checking in with ourselves and seeing what is coming up for us and if it is starting to become something that is overwhelming our system, then we need to find ways to access support so we can be taking care of our Mental Health during this crisis that is happening throughout our country. I imagine there are a lot of people, myself included, that are feeling this helplessness. There is too much for us to overcome, and not a lot that we can do about it. I think that that is a valid feeling. And we just cannot be complacent with it. We can acknowledge that we are feeling hopeless and understand why we might be feeling hopeless. The important thing is to know that all of us can play a role in combating racism. All of us need to be paying attention to what we can do for our community during this time. And one more thing before i let you go. How do we have these Difficult Conversations with our children . What you we talking to them about right now . Many of them are not in school and this idea that we were not able to freely move around our cities, and now we are seeing curfews and a large Police President , presents. Its a lot to deal with. I appreciate that of us adul and parents are under the impression that if we are not sure what to say, we should say something. We need to be having these conversations. We need to have this dialogue with their children of all ages as long as we are making sure it is ageappropriate and making space for questions and concerns and fears so that our children can calm and talk about very real world events and know that as parents we can model appropriate conversations about it. We always appreciate your advice. Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. We speak with the civil rights attorney and activist about how the peaceful protests we are seeing are being hijacked by violence. What we all need to do to make sure the real message is getting through. Fires and looting overnight in san leandro. We had out to see how leaders there are trying to restore the peace. The anticipation of how busy it was by standing up there are concerns that the mass protests are increasing the risk of spreading the coronavirus. Im the only one touching the van, but im still gonna take the time to wipe everything down. I recently took a break cause my girlfriend and i just had a baby. In the middle of this pandemic, you know, having a kid, theres something different. When i came back, amazon completely changed. There you go, sir. Thank you. Recovering the van was different, coming into the station and loading was different. If anything, they took it overboard on the safety, and thats what i love. Its funny to say im essential. Were all working towards a common goal. Just like amazon says, deliver smiles, and honestly, i believe i do. The protests continue across the bay area and the nation over the Police Killing of george floyd with calls for systemic changes to address Police Discrimination and violence targeting the black community. We are joined by a civil rights attorney representing the families of a number of people who have died at the hands of police. Sadly, we have been here before as a country. Clearly the killing of george floyd has sparked some of the most widespread protests we have seen in cities across the nation. Do you feel as though we are at a turning point in this. I hope that we are at appoint in this country where we can close the very dark, long, and tragic history of police violence. Hopefully you can hear me. I want to ask you how do you turn the calls for change that we are hearing on the streets of america into something meaningful . What are the key steps you believe need to be taken to address racial bias and discrimination . Transparency is key. Those officers who run afoul of the law who is in the community by abusing, killing, and brutalizing people in our name must be held accountable. The record should be made available to the public, and there should be a no tolerance policy about any officer that abuses can, but utilizes or kills in the publics name. You should not be on the force if you are racists, you should not be on the police force. If you are homophobic, sexist, you should not be on the police force. You are making decisions of life and death against the very people whom you are racist or discriminatory against. One and two cannot exist at the same time. Let me ask you, we have seen images over the weekend and there are a number of Police Chiefs who have come out to condemn the video and what haened to george floyd in minnesota. We have seen Police Officers dealing alongside processors. What do you think seeing those actions by Police Officers. Does that signal more of a commitment for meaningful change do you think . Well, it is definitely something new, and i will come in. However, it is very easy to point to the skate goat or point to people other than yourself or your own police departments. So while i saw george floyd of 60 added to death with the knee on his neck in minneapolis, i dont have to go that far. We can look in the bay area and there is a gentleman named rory nelson who died in a similar fashion. Not to mention the countless other men and women of color and even joshua in oakland who died in a hail of Police Bullets while he was asleep. These dont just go on in minneapolis or some faroff place. They are happening right here in the bay area. I would be more encouraged if i saw the Police Chiefs and the mayors and the district attorneys of our bay area care in California Holding their own accountable and taking a need for when their officers offend and brutalize and kill people. All right. We appreciate you weighing in here what were saying play out across the country. Thank you so much for your time. As dozens of cities that what fun of protests, there are escalating fears of a second wave of the coronavirus. We have more from washington. Reporter more than 100,000 coronavirus deaths in the u. S. And no end in sight to the outbreak. Over the weekend major unrest related to the death of george floyd raising fears of a big spike in cases with thousands of protesters hitting the streets across the country. Researchers are moving closer to developing a treatment and eli lilly announcing they are moving ahead with the first human study of a new drug designed to fight covid19 by using antibodies from people who had the virus and have survived. We take the best antibodies and skill them up and make them into a potent medicine. Reporter if it works in the trial, it could become widely available to the public in the fall. More about the coronavirus concerns. Dr always transmission is lower in open spaces, but a lot of the protesters are not wearing masks. How worried are you about an influx of covid19 cases . Well, heather, this is a complicated situation. We understand how covid is spread. By this time close proximity and not wearing of masks or social distance is something that will help covid spread. So while we are grieving the senseless loss of life and we stand together obviously during these protests, we dont want to cause more loss of life. Anything at all we can do to decrease the spread of the coronavirus. I would urge the protesters to do including wearing a mask. If at all possible, stand six feet apart. Carrying a Hand Sanitizer so if they come in contact with anything or anyone they can sanitize their hands. As far as the increase in covert cases, that is certainly possible. We are taking a live look from sky fox of a very large demonstration outside oakland tech. You can see it is a lot of people and they are very close together. It is hard to see if many of them are wearing masks. You mentioned Hand Sanitizer and socially distance. I was reading other things like not singing, not shouting, let your nose makers speak for you in this process. It seems like these are going to be difficult tips to follow, especially right now when emotions are so raw. You are so right. We have to remember that the responsibility to prevent covid spread rests with the protesters and the police. Sometimes they try to contain these crowds and they packed them into smaller spaces. Maybe we should let the protesters keep their masks on. And most importantly, we have to remember to keep the protests peaceful. And urging the police to exercise restraint. We do not want people to be arrested and then a lot of people be put in jail where this very close proximity. All right, always a pleasure. Obviously Health Agencies are being told right now to do what they can to prepare for a possible influx of cases. It was kind of a cool gray weekend here with lots of clouds.
