Typically we go straight to the governor giving a noontime press conference on the covid 19 crisis. At this point we hear from the governor but first this is the pastor of the Sacramento Church introducing the governor. Sacramento saw violent protests and lets listen in to governor newsom. All of those that are assembled here behind the cameras, that took the time to reach out and connect with not just me but one another to talk about the state of california and more broadly the world that we live in. Todays meeting like so many that ive had a humbling. The voices of concern, consternation, anxiety are real and raw and i recognize so conditionally and fundamentally that so often people in my position are inadequate to the moment and so often we try to meet the moment with rhetoric and we fain resolve and we make a point to assert a new paradigm. Over and over and over again we hear the names of those whose lives have been lost and takenr advanced. Communities continuing to feel they are not only being torn asunder but not being listened to. And i fear, as i know Many Americans fear. And we fail to rationalize goodwill and we fail to materialize and manifest the ideals that we so often assert. And so, i today, a place of worship humbled by that past and humbled by the past ive been part of that past is a former county supervisor a governor and as the governor of the nations largest state. The question i have to ask myself in the questions we have to ask ourselves, are we capable of not just meeting this moment but of doing justice to the moments in front of us. We can put together a group of advisors. Put together a task force. I can promise and promote a few pieces of legislation. I said that some friday. You have to change hearts and minds and culture, not just laws. And we have to own up to some very difficult things the black community is not responsible for what is happening in this country. We are. Our institutions are responsible. We are accountable to this moment. Lets just call that out. We have a unique to the black community and weve beenrations. For generatis. Things move away in headlines. We indulge on the margins but we dont foundational he address the root of these issues. We prune, we do not tier out the institutional racism from all of our institutions large and small. We dont. We know that. The Community Knows that. You are seeing it manifested out on the streets for the past five days. I know that. Do we deeply understand that . Do we or are we prepared to do something differently about it. Each and every one of us watching, what will we do differently, foundational. Not in the short run but the long run. To do justice to this moment. People have lost patience because they have not seen progress. If you are out there saying people need to be patient, considered people have lost patients for a reason. They have been told that over and over and over again. Not just the 52 years ive been around. My grandparents are in the same. Just be patient. Ive quoted doctor king ad nauseam in the long arms of history been toward justice. He made progress. This is a manifestation of everything weve been promoting that we have not delivered. People have lost patience. And if leaders are going to meet, not just this moment but the moments in front of us, we better start listening and hearing people. We better own up to our own responsibility and own accountability that led to this moment. Society becomes how we behave. We are our behaviors. Each and every one of us has an obligation to do more and better and folks in my position more still. I get that. I own that. But leaders can be found everywhere. Leadership is not just some fancy title. We are desperate for leadership in this country in the state of california. Desperate for leadership in communities large and small. Leaders can be found anywhere. You dont have to be something to do something to soften the edges. And in the spirit of Bobby Kennedy make more gentle in this world. Doctor king did not wish to become president of the United States to exercise his authority. Every day he shared his moral authority. Each and every one of us has the capacity to exercise moral authority every day and we need moral leaders, and now more than ever. Each and every one of us has that capacity and it resides inside of us. Our capacity lead by example, to find our better angels and focus on the things that unite us and not divide us and reinforce the sense of optimism because we recognize we have to do things differently and we are resolve to prove that and not just paying lip service. Each of us will judge each other to the extent we do justice and advance our cause in a different way. I am here is your governor, humbled over the course of the last five days, resolve to keep the peace of recognizing an armed camp is not a place of peace and that the answer to violence is not more violence. And if we create the conditions to truly advance people have to know we mean they have to know that they matter and that we care. And so for those of you that are out there protesting, i want you to know you matter and i want you to know i care and we care and i dont want to demonstrate that rhetorically and i want you to know that i have a unique responsibility to prove that to you. You have lost patience. So have i. You are right to feel wrong. You are right to feel the way you are feeling. And we, collectively, society has a responsibility to you to be better and do better. To those that want to exploit this moment, that want to inflame the violence and fear, we hear you as well, but we dont have the same sensitivities as it relates to those that are trying to exercise their voice from a place of hurt and pain. When you cause pain on others and when you are out there to exploit conditions and not advance the cause of justice, that is not serving the greater good and we need to also call that out. The looting, the violence, the threats against fellow human beings has no place in this state and in this nation. We as a society need to call that out and we need to call forth our better angels. And those that want to express themselves and say thank you, god bless you. Keep doing it. Your rage is real and keep talking. Dont let others drown out the rage and those who want to advance this cause in a responsible and thoughtful way. I am not patient any longer and i know you are not. We hear you and we have a responsibility now to prove to you, not just to assert that we are capable to being more and doing better as a society and the community. I want to express my deep gratitude in my dee leaders, ev and all across the state and all across this nation are doing justice in this moment. Those demonstrators that were seen reaching out trying to calm other people to those Community Leaders that were out there with brooms in the Early Morning sweeping up class. The folks that were on the periphery who said i cannot stand on the periphery any longer. I need to be part of this effort. Thank you to all of your examples as well. So much good in so much right that is out there that there is a stain on the history of this country we have concealed and it is rearing its head again. It is the issue of racism and the pastor is exactly right. Pandemic on top of a pandemic. Impacting our health, our economy and our capacity to live up to our greatest ideals. We can talk about being bound together by a web of mutuality as doctor king said. If that is the case we need to reconcile the fact that we are all in this together and the bible teaches us we are many parts but at the end of the day and body and when one part suffers we all suffer suffer. We have an obligation to reconcile the fact that our faith is tied to the fate of others. South africa, i am because you are. Time for more empathy and care. More capacity to collaborate. In society its about dominance and aggression. This is what you get. Not because of the protesters but the conditions that led to this moment, or protest was inevitable. So we are committed and resolved to bring in peace back to the streets, not the states but to support the efforts all across this nation. We will do our part but it is not just a situational moment. We have to focus on the medium and long term and have to prove our commitment and resolve in that space. So i want to thank all of the leaders, not only assembled here but throughout the state, once again for your courage because now is the time for courage. Now it is time for your voice to be brought to the forefront. Let me think all of those doing their best to keep people safe under very difficult circumstances and all of those leaders out there supporting others keeping people safe and our communities large and small all across the state of california at this trying and difficult moment. With that we are happy to take any questions. We are happy also, to step aside and have members of the community respond as well. Thank you, governor. Im in questions on behalf of the press corps. Many of us would like to know what your reaction is to trumps comments this morning to governors to get tough on protesters . My reaction is the meeting i just had, my reaction is the words i spoke in my commitment to the people of the state, the most diverse state and democracy. Focus on things that unite us to make sure people are safe but to make sure people recognize that there is something that lies deep underneath that has come to the fore and needs to be template with an equivalency of energy, focus and resolved. We will provide the resources as needed to members of my Community Leaders all up and down the state of california but we must resolve to provide those resources to discuss those at the same time. Should we interpret comments today of criticism of what he said this morning . Gavin newsom as he is speaking in the noontime hour. Usually we hear about covid19 restrictions. A different topic but one weve heard and spoke about but never in such personal terms as we heard in the past few minutes. The governor told californians who are upset and angry you are right to feel wrong. The black community is not responsible. We are. The governor spoke about institutional racism from city governor as he was a San Francisco city supervisor and many people say it goes to the Public School system system. He spoke about justice, not only in the case of george floyd who died at the hands of Police Officers after one kneeled on his neck for eight or 9 minutes. He talked about the anger and the palpable frustration and the cries for changes that were not heard their in sacramento we saw peaceful protests and we saw looting and riots and people damaging parts of their own community. A lot of upset in the governor said, this is not a problem that the black community is affected to fix. This is a problem is people who live here the nation and the world are expected to fix. The governor spoke in very personal in clear terms on this. He certainly did. As we have seen protests and demonstrations across the state across the country, at times, it turned violent. At times, and with vandalism and destruction of property in the stores being looted. The governor said in terms of people who are taking advantage or exploiting these conditions he said he understood their anger and their frustration but again he is urging calm here and the state of california and he said he is committed to bringing peace back to our streets here and whatever that takes in terms of state resources he is committed to doing so. We will monitor the governors comments here on the unrest across california and the nation. Now we switch gears and bring kyla in to get a check of our bay area weather. Kyla we are going from a cool and cloudy weekend and shifting into what will be wary warm weather. Indeed. We are shifting into high gear with the warm weather. Lets start off with a look at her beautiful city. San francisco. Its gorgeous with blue skies and high clouds as well. Its a gorgeous day out there. 64 degrees in San Francisco. 69 and open. Fremont and the east bay 74. Sa and you can see a breeze there at 12 miles an hour and oakland at 10 and as we look at sfo with that the onshore flow happening which keeps our coast cooler. Take a look at the radar here Storm Tracker showing you we dont have a lot of clouds in the sky. We have a few clouds cast off by a loosely organized system that has sunk down into Southern California so that will keep us from getting too terribly warm today and 73 in oakland is what we expect for the high. We see 80s in concord in santa rosa low 80s. Morgan hill you too. 66 for San Francisco. 614 pacifica. The features we are dealing with to bring this heat in his this High Pressure over the four corners. This low pressure develops into a cut off win the battle and we santa rosa looking for a high of 91. Tomorrow at 94. Oakland tomorrow mid 80s.
