There are hundreds of protesters surrounding the precinct. Police officers were seen abandoning it, but there has been no sign of any firefighters as of yet. You can see people piling wood and cardboard at the entrance to the building and throwing fireworks as the fire burns out of control. The damage stretched out across the twin cities of minneapolis and st. Paul, at least 20 different areas are involved, including one of st. Pauls main shopping streets where windows were smashed and businesses were looted. Minnesotas governor is calling on the National Guard to keep order. The protesters want the four officers to be charged with murder after this video showed one of those officers with his knee pinned to the neck of george floyd. Officer kept it there for at least five minutes, possibly as long as eight minutes, even as floyd complained he couldnt breathe. A federal investigation has now been launched. Reporter as violent and fiery protests continue, the investigation into George Floyds death will now have the power of the department of justice and federal bureau of investigation. The doj says its a top priority, which will include prosecutors and fbi criminal investigators. A joint statement from the u. S. Attorney and fbi special agent in charge says quote, it is a violation of federal law for an individual acting under color of law to willfully deprive another person of any right protected by the constitution, or laws of the united states. It is critical, it is essential, it is imperative that the investigation is done right and done right the first time. That is what we are going to do. There were reports of some vandalism, including smashed car windows, at one point earlier in the day someone fired six or seven shots in the air, sending people running. Nobody was hurt. Reporter vallejos protest was pulled together overnight by people who met on facebook. A bigger protest organized by Police Watchdog groups is set for tomorrow evening in oakland. The San Jose Police chief eddie garcia is speaking out against the officers involved in floyds death. Chief garcia says they should be prosecuted. He also says he plans to use the video as a training tool for new recruits in the academy. Chief garcia says officers already have a very difficult job to do and that this incident is why some communities struggle to trust the police. These types of incidents are the reason why particularly our communities of color like a lot of trust in Law Enforcement. Thats a reality and another example is to why that is. So we have to work just as hard. Chief garcia is also calling out all Bay Area Police chiefs to speak up and condemn what happened. In a joint statement, the San Francisco, san jose and Oakland Police officers associations side in part, we are equally disturbed by not seeing any of the other officers on scene intervened to prevent the tragedy. Whats depicted in the video is not who we are as Law Enforcement professionals. California reported more than 2600 new cases of the coronavirus yesterday. That is the largest single day number since the start of the pandemic. The state Health Department says 2617 people tested positive in the past 24 hours. The total number of covid cases in the state is no more than 103,000. So far nearly 4000 people have died and here in the bay area most counties reporting a rise in the number of cases, more than 13,000 people have tested positive for the virus and at least 436 people have died in the bay area. And Oakland Grocery store is dealing with the coronavirus operate. The mercury news reports a dozen workers in the fruitvale neighborhood have tested positive for covid19. The latest case was reported on sunday. Each infected employee has been asked to quarantine for at least two weeks, but the store has remained open. They have more than 56 locations. According to the companys website, workers at eight stores have tested positive, including at its san rafael and heyward locations. San francisco is releasing information on how and when more businesses will reopen in the city. Starting on june 15th most indoor retail will be able to reopen. Also, restaurants can start offering Outdoor Dining and sporting events can resume, but without spectators. And in july hair salons and barbershops will be allowed to reopen. And and midaugust schools can reopen, along with bars, new phones and playgrounds. San franciscos chamber of commerce says these target dates allow businesses to start thinking about rehiring workers and stocking up. San francisco already allows some retail to operate using curbside service. As part of the citys plan to reopen, everyone in San Francisco will now be required to wear a face mask when outside of their home. That includes exercising or walking outdoors. Previously face coverings were only required inside essential businesses and in public buildings. The new order goes into Effect Tomorrow at midnight. Exceptions include driving in your car and children 12 or younger. Police had been called to the scene for a report of a man acting erratically on a motorcycle chasing someone and banging on doors.
