Things are cooling down, steve, as we look at some of the commutes. Its still a bit slow. I remember when, just a few weeks ago, we looked at the bay bridge in the morning, there was no slow traffic. That is not the case anymore, as more people are crowding around that hole plaza. There is some slowing here. 88 he is a bit crowded, as you head down, there is slowing in hayward. Some of the spots where you normally see slow traffic like the ultima pass. This is san jose, and you can see traffic is moving well. Now, 8 02, lets go back to the headlines. Thank you, sal. A car went off the highway into the water, and the driver did die in this crash. Highway patrol says around 5 30 this morning was going westbound and tried to pass moving traffic and crossed over double yellow lines. When he went to the eastbound lanes to pass, there was another car coming eastbound. In order to avoid a headon collision, the vehicle swerved to the left, went off the roadway into the water, upside down. So far the only other information Highway Patrol has released about the driver is that he is male, and that he was alone in the vehicle. New this morning, the San Jose Fire Department is still at the scene of a latenight fire that sparked up again early this morning. The fire first started around 10 50 last night at creature lane and mb avenue, not far from piedmont high school. It destroyed a garage and burned three cars. Cruise were able to get the fire out before it spread to nearby homes, but firefighters later were still dealing with hotspots reigniting the fire. The residents reported their garage was slightly open at the bottom, and they may have been running a fan in the garage, possibly just to get some air in there to cool the hot. You know, some appliances have a hard time managing that heat, if they have been running for a long time, so we suspect that it potentially may have been something to do with the fan. The red cross is helping the five people who were able to safely evacuate their home due to smoke and water itself. All right, steve mentioned mainland temperatures could reach triple digits again. Lets check with Sara Zendehnam with safety precautions one south bay city is taking. Good morning, mike. Well, there is some relief for those living in the south bay. San jose has opened five centers to act as cooling centers. If you take a look at your screen here, we have a list of centers that will open later today. They include camden, cyprus, roosevelt, and seven trees. These centers have rules, though. You have to wear a mask, keep your distance, stay home if you are sick, and temperatures will be checked at the door. The shelter in place orders shut down Community Centers in midmarch. City officials decided to open them with limited hours to give people another option to get out of the heat. In precoronavirus times, they could seat up to 2700 per day. Now other places to cool off, like movie theaters, libraries, and museums, the enclosed, there are more out. Vulnerable populations are at a greater risk of heat related illness. It is important to recognize the signs and get help immediately. Any faint feelings or high body temperatures, throbbing headache, its a pretty quick sign. And you know, if you begin expressing symptoms, try to get to a cooler location, drink some cool water, if you are able. Take a cool shower or use a cold compress. Here are some tips to stay safe. Stay hydrated, drink a lot of water. Hide out in air conditioning, if available. Avoid spending too much time outside, and dont exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Today the state of california is expected to top 100,000 covid19 cases and meantime, Bay Area Health permits are also reporting a surge in local cases. Authorities are working to determine if new outlets are popping up. A number of cases last week was nearly 40 higher, this week compared to last. The size of the increase surprised them. Covid19 cases in the bay area could reach 13,000 today. 432 people in our region have died so far. Alameda county, which has the most cases in the entire bay area, will likely 3000 coronavirus cases today. Today, cindy clary, Santa Clara County Health Officials will be testing the facility, after 38 already tested positive. America foods, on railroad avenue, not far from highway 101. A couple weeks ago the spouse of an employee was hospitalized with coronavirus. The employee was then tested, as was everyone. The company has several new measures in place, including closing cafeterias and locker rooms where social distancing is a challenge. Physical barriers and temperature changes will be implement it. They are playing catchup at this point. We need to, Companies Need to do that before they find out someone is infected. Not afterwards. There have been several outbreaks of covid19 infections at Food Processing plants across the country, including a meatpacking facility in Central California. Where 130 employees tested positive. Some physical restaurants in San Francisco maybe reopening, in what is called the shared spaces program. It lets restaurants use sidewalks, parking lots, to seat customers. There is no question that Outdoor Dining, and cafes, is really part of the equation it is far more safe having people outdoors. We got to make sure we have protocols in place. The same rules would apply to nonessential retail shops, who would be allowed to move onto the sidewalk. More details expected by the middle of next month. s emphasis Officials Say the pandemic indirectly contributed to a spike in Homeless People who have died in the last couple of months. There were 48 reported deaths compared to just 14 during the same time last year. City leaders say reasons include more drug overdoses and the pandemic making it more difficult for homeless to receive services and to find shelter. The next three weeks will be a critical time for counties for funding to deal with the crisis. State makers will be negotiating whether to approve a plan by the governor to waive certain environmental regulations for counties. There are also talks about using federal Coronavirus Money for a plan to convert hotels into homeless housing. All of this would be included in the upcoming city budget that must be passed by june 15th. It is 8 09. This morning in florida, managers of todays scheduled launched to carry american astronauts to space are very closely watching the weather. Right now theres a 60 chance of acceptable other check for todays launch. He has been hoping for a mission like this his entire career. The one thing that we put on our list of dream jobs that we would have gotten to have some day, it would have been to be aboard a new spacecraft, conducting a test mission aboard that craft. They will be the First American astronauts to launch into space from the United States since the end of the Space Shuttle program. If everything goes well they will be the first crew to make it to the International Space station aboard a private companys rocket and counsel. Space x, owned by tesla ceo, elon musk, is providing the rocket and dragon capsule. Just an amazing vehicle. It is definitely not the Space Shuttle in many ways its much smaller, but its a capsule, its stateoftheart from a technology standpoint, and we are so excited to be in a real spaceship but not the simulator. The space xy. In march, space x flew the rocket and safely splashed down in the atlantic ocean. We are really here to try to motivate the next generation. But we are not rushing it. Safety is number one. And well keep that in mind, all the way through until we get them back on. The space x rocket are on launch pad 38 at Kennedy Space center, where apollo 11 took off on its journey to the moon or than 50 years ago. The decision about the weather, both at the launch site and across the atlantic, is expected to be made about an hour before the scheduled launch. In a new study, less than half americans say they would actually get a vaccine if one were to become available. In a new study compiled by the associated press, 49 said they would get vaccinated, if it was an option. The survey found that 31 of people are still debating, while 20 completely ruled out the ideas and are uncertain about the safety of a new vaccine. I would not want people to think that we are cutting corners, because that would be a big mistake. I think this is an effort to try to achieve efficiencies but not to sacrifice rigor. The study also found that 42 surveyed say they believe life will only go back to normal if a vaccine becomes available. Amtrak says it needs a 1. 5 billion bailout from the federal government. The rail service says ridership and revenue is down at least 95 this year. We are seeing a caltrans truck pulling up, it could be a stalled vehicle somewhere, because i see a truck with red lights on. That vehicle that we see right there in the middle maybe stalled out. It looks like it, so just avoid the righthand side of the toll plaza, as you pull up your it but, right there you can see that the car is stalled out. All right 8 19. Lets bring steve back in. Are, thank you, sir. Across the board i think by tomorrow morning, we will see fog, but not today. It is moving up and down the coast, but not impacting us yet. It will get the act together and meet early early tomorrow morning, some of that creeping up to Central California coasts there. But the low is on its way. The impact of fog will start tomorrow, and well get a huge drop in temperatures on friday.
