First offer indoor dining. Many others need time to ramp up. There are now seven tables where once there were 17. Napkins and saltandpepper are disposable. Dayquil is not part of everyones workstation anymore. Easing of some restrictions seem to have a still cautious community. A little worried about getting infected but i think we just have to be smart. Im concerned about it. I dont wanted to limit my getting out and around too much. Bringing back a little bit of normalcy in a place that is very uncertain and still scary. No one here expects it or can handle the number of tourists pass the memorial day weekend. Some daytrippers have been coming to downtown joes. 50 of my customers are coming in from concord, walnut creek, San Francisco, oakland. Laces where they cant go out to dine. Before the pandemic, nampa county had a 2. 2 billion tourist industry. It remain closed to the public. Now it has only a dozen First Responders and essential workers. Tours with reservations are told to standby until phase 3. At least now the looser restrictions have brought optimism. Is bringing people out, letting people have some joy in Dining Experience again. Nampa is open for business, Santa Clara County became the last bay area to enter phase 2 meeting businesses open up fore for Business Owners to try and get up and running in the safe and modified manner. Businesses hoping the customers will adapt to this new way of shopping. Thats true. Although it was a bit slow on day one. Stores saying they are emailing all their loyal customers to remind them they are at least partially open for business. Biko Travis Matthew is preparing for something they havent seen in weeks. Customers. Mask on, clean, sanitize and get back to work. Santa clara county this is the first day retailers are allowed to do Curbside Pickup. Making sure shoppers know has been a challenge. Oh youre doing curbside yes let it rock. At santana row they have a system in place. There is six designated pickup zones around the ball. It makes it so convenient and effortless from a customer perspective. Picking up close and dinner at the same time. So far about 10 stores have open for Curbside Pickup in addition to restaurants already doing that. I feel like every week we will get at least five or six more retailers coming on board. We are starting about 10 and it will slowly increase after that. Stores recognize it wont be easy to change customer habits. In palo alto they are hopeful people will in grace embrace the new normal. Its a team, as a company and a community, i think were moving in the right direction. As part of phase 2, manufactures and warehouses that support retail also are allowed to reopen. Sore museums and historical sites. A lot of changes to get used to. Thank you. You can get all the information with the ktvt you news app. At the top of the page. Now for President Trump. Today he has declared the houses of worships are essential services. They should reopen immediately. Despite the states orders to the contrary. Some governors deemed Liquor Stores and abortion clinics as essential but have left out churches and houses of worship. Its not right. The governors need to allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now. For this weekend. If they dont do it, i will override the governors. Some 1200 churches plan to reopen this stayat home guidelines. Governor newsom said he explored expects to release new guidance on churches next week. We look forward to for churches to open and a safe and responsible manner we have guidelines that we anticipate completing on monday. We are on track to do that just that. Newsom directly address the president statement. And asked what authority the president would use. The cdc released new guidelines for places of worship for those intendants and services out doors in a large well ventilated area. The constitutional law professor at hastings. Thank you so much for being here. Does the president . In short, no, he can say that but he has no direct authority. This is something that is up to the states. It was something to keep his face happy on a friday. Lets talk about when it comes to overwriting state orders and state governments. The answer is under the 10th amendment this is not something subject to president ial power but is subject to state and local power. The president can suggest in the cdc can vary properly as it did this afternoon, issue guidelines but the president does not have direct power to order somethhes wanted to be as handsoff as possible saying everything is up does not have the authority to do this, does congresslets say congress doesnt feel as though certain businesses are houses of worship in this case should be closed, could congress override a state governor . No is the 10th amendment issue. This is division of power between federal power and state power. Is very clear Supreme Court guidance which was written by Justice Scalia some years ago. I feel like im on pretty firm ground on this saying theres no power. Can you suggest . Can you make recommendations . Can you offer some grant money to encourage the opening of churches . You could do all that. But to order it from the white house or order it from congress . No. Do you see this being settled obviously if it drags on, settle in court. And do you think the president s very Public Comment could sway judges as they consider lawsuits that have been filed by churches . I doubt that judges would be swayed. It might encourage more churches to open more quickly. Other places of worship. Its a big weekend for lots of religions. Ramadan and saturday. The jewish holiday is coming up. A pentecost for christians. Theres a lot of temptation to come back together. Is possible that churches will go faster than they should. Its possible localities may issue crackdowns. I think all that is the guidelines will be used as Governor Newsom said in that clip, to explain what is appropriate and by and large, places of worship should will do things in an appropriate way because they want to keep their congregants alive. My final question for you this public rift from President Trump saying he would override state governors. Where do you see this ultimately going. If you say the president doesnt have the power to do so does it end with those remarks . What might happen because after all earlier this week attorney general bar sent a letter to Governor Newsom a shot across the bow. Theoretically lets say this church wanted to go further than state guidelines and there ended up being a lawsuit and the attorney general decided to weigh in on the side of a church, Something Like that might happen the events will overtake this Governor Newsom is true to the word of the guidelines are coming out for places of worship as early as monday this will all get worked out. These places will want to open up into Pack Services in a way that is not yet safe. Openair, small places, social distancing, although things will be fine. Its only going to be the kind of churches that feel its absolutely necessary to pack the place to the rafters that might be an issue. There may be some in new york city with different religions. In arkansas there was a Church Gathering there were people the got sick with that. This is not a game to be playing with this. From the president i honestly think he will move on to something next week will move on to Something Else from him well talk about that next week. Appreciated have a good weekend. You also, stay safe. For today a study of 100,000 people shines a light on the dangers of malaria drug often touted as President Trump as a cure for covid19. New details about the anti malaria drug that President Trump has touted for use and champing for use in the fight against the coronavirus. Hydroxychloroquine was found to have potential fatal consequences when used to treat covid19. Researchers analyze more than 96,000 patients hospitalized with covid19 in more than 650 hospitals. For more of this we are joined by the doctor who is the professor of Infectious Diseases at the school of public health. Is good to have you on here dr. Riley. In this study suggested not only there is no benefit harm. Was the biggest take away for you . This is the largest study to confirm whats already been done by other studies. The evidence is now overwhelming that this drug, hydroxychloroquine , not only is totally useless for treating covid19 but actually causes harm. It can actually cause fatal outcomes. This is something we need to be aware of. When we break down the numbers inside the study, how much more likely is someone to die when they are treated with hydroxychloroquine and they also have coronavirus . In this large study compared with people who took the drug compared with those it did not take the drug, among those people that were affected with the coronavirus, i think the percentage was about 130 or 130 more who took the hydroxychloroquine were likely to die. This is really a significant difference in terms of who takes the drug and who does not take the drug when you have covid19. In combination with antibiotics made it worse. I was going to say for patients that were given the combination that President Trump has talked about, hydroxychloroquine and an antibody out antibiotic, the risk is even greater. Theres also greater risk of serious heart problems. This hydroxychloroquine causes arrhythmia of the heart. We know the virus also affects the heart. Thats probably what they are finding, a combination of the viral infection of the heart and the drug makes this complication conduction of the heart a lot worse. What you think happens now that this study has come out . Are we going to see doctors and medical professionals stop prescribing hydroxychloroquine to coronavirus patients and are we going to see the president stop endopossible tre people with covid19. It should only be and only peop lupus disease. I think we know that is a dangerous drug for uses other than those two diseases. The drug was meant for. Anyone who supports the president should write to him and tell him, why is he doing this . It is not healthy for him. What about the fda, they approve the emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine. Do you anticipate there will be a reversal there . That will happen very shortly. You talked about the patients who do need this drug, now on the outbreak, a lot of focus has been on the drug and obviously because we hear the president touting this as a potential treatment, sales of the drug have doubled from what they were last year, what does it mean for those other patients that you referred to the folks with the auto immune diseases and condition like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, is it harder for them to get their hands on the drug . Not only it may be harder for those people to get the drug but the drugs are getting more expensive. Its particularly important for those that live in areas of the world with malaria and also for travelers. To those countries. This is something that is used against malaria. And so the drugs are getting expensive and more difficult to get. Well we will certainly see what the fallout is from the findings of the study. A very important research. Dr. Lee riley professor of Infectious Diseases at Berkeley School of medicine. Appreciate you. A breezy day in the bay area. A temperatures coming in a little bit cooler than yesterday. Harvey mills would have turned 90. Join me now to talk about the man who championed to the lb gt q community. Cleve jones is a close friend of harvey mills. Thank you for being here today. My pleasure, you write about your love and respect for harvey. And you will continue to miss him. I think about him almost every day. Meeting him was probably the most important thing that happened to me. He taught me a lot. He was there as a father figure before i reconciled with my own dad. We have had many martyrs. He was the first collective martyr. He was in the first one i think he was the sixth but he was the first in california. He took office at a time when a new movement was under considerable attack. He was an important figure. I miss him. He was never a single issue guy. He cared very much about Senior Citizens and kids. He cared about her parks and libraries. His greatest strength was his empathy and ability to listen to and connect with all different kinds of people. He really championed a lot. He thought against racism. And heath fought for womens rights. He was concerned about renters, even then, i dont think he could have imagined the skyrocketing rent situation in San Francisco. He himself, lost his camera store to a massive rent increase. He understood the problems of ordinary people, workingclass people. He believed in labor unions. Had a wonderful sense of humor. You wrote a piece saying that harvey mills was taken way too soon and he had so much more to give. How would things be different had he lived a little bit longer. When i think about both harvey and George Moscone a, i was in the city hall when they were assassinated. When you think about those two men, its quite po that george have run for governor and one and harvey mills wouldve been mayor of San Francisco. One could only imagine what would have been accomplished for city and state if theyd held of those offices. Especially in the early days of the hiv pandemic. Could not have had a more robust response. We are just about out of time. You recently wrote in article about harvey milk and his legacy which wouldve been his 90th birthday. You also mentioned whats going on with covid19. You said challenges are daunting and complex. There days when we feel despair and powerless and overwhelmed. Those are the days when we need harveys memory the most. Adding that we all have the power to change. Absolutely true. I want your viewers to know even though hes been mythologized in played by sean penn in and oscar winning film. Harvey milk was an ordinary man he had failures and tragedies and humiliations but he loved his city and community and people and he changed the world. Those are words that we can live by right now especially as we are dealing with this ongoing out rake. Thank you so much always a pleasure to see you. Thank you, take good care. We are joined by the Operations Manager for the Mammal Center. Good to have you on here. This was a remarkable rescue. We know this was a collaborative effort. What did it take to free this hump back . Great question and thanks for framing it that way. It takes a village for responding to these efforts in making it a success. We were initially called in by saturday for a boat on the water. We had one of our Network Members already on the water. They were on a stand by vessel and initial steps for the rescue. It all started on saturday. It was on monday that it involved a lot of organizations. This whale was dragging i was reading three sets of crab pods in essence wade the whale down. It wasnt going anywhere. In some ways i suppose that help to because it was easier to track the whale as you were trying to go through this process of rescuing. Great point. A whale that his been located in one place and cant free swim does allow for us to make sure we can recite that animal over multiple days. A free swimming whale we have a tracking set that we can track it over time. How is the whale doing now . Sounds like the outcome is not necessarily certain at this point but you are hopeful. We are hopeful. Some of the other experiences ive been involved with in the past, we do have some documentation efforts of single or entanglement and that whale was recovered in feeding and migrating. We are optimistic about this whale. One thing we dont know after disentanglement we dont have the technologies of the tool to track the animals at a time. I was going to ask that question. If you can continue to monitor the Recovery Process of the whale. It sounds like thats challenging to do. We know the incredible work you do at the center. What is the take away from a rescue like this is so many of us have seen. What steps can be taken in the future to avoid a similar scenario. Another great question. As far as the awareness. About what is going on out there. Educating yourself. Choosing to eat seafood thats sustainable and caught in that way. Its a sustainable fishery. Education being smart about the seafood you use. If you do come across that and you are out theres a hotline number you if you see a well that is in trouble or distress for any reason it initiates the hotline and gets the whole system going to free that whale. Great work by you and your colleagues we appreciate what you do. Thats ryan burger in the marine Mammal Center in sausalito. Thank you very much. Thank you.
