54. 3 billion. Those numbers fueled by a 25 drop due to the pandemic. The state will use all of its rainy days fund to spread out. It will drain at the reserve accounts that add up to 1. 5 billion. More than a quarter of the shortfall will be made up with budget cuts including the proposed 10 wage cut. Nothing breaks my heart more than making budget cuts. We have been makingof california. And now being forced into the position where we are ma cuts breaks my heart. There is a human being behind every single number. Governor newsom said that the budget cuts could be rescinded if there is federal support. He said new spending on Public Health will be delayed. More on bleek numbers on unemployment. Here to talk about the unemployment numbers in the proposed budget is a james mcbride, Financial Advisor with the mcbride group. The governor detailed a sobering reality. Pay cuts , and programs cut and a lot more. Unfortunately there will be service cuts. And thats going to happen is taxes would go up. As far as cutting pay of government workers thats probably not going to happen like its hard to imagine when the governor explains all of these cuts. They could be even deeper if it wasnt for the rainy day fund. You have to tip your hat to governor brown. He came in during the economic dire situation. He insisted on building that runny day fund. It is going to help break the fall. Taxes will go up and services will go down. Im on a move on to the somewhat sobering unemployment numbers. There are human beings behind all of those statistics. If you look at the trend of the unemployment numbers, those numbers are going down every week. They have trended down in the last 56 weeks. There is a high probability that so many of these jobs, 90 will return once the economy restarts. We are and that tough place between opening the economy and saving lives. Its a very difficult situation. Its an important balance that needs to be struck. You mention states reopening. As the economy restarts people will be returning to work and thats going to translate into more deaths according to a lot of the doctors. We cannot just shut down the economy forever. We have to get people working again and we have to get the economy going. The trend is in our favor, claims are going down, there is a light at the end of the tunnel as difficult as it has been. A lot of people are looking forward to reopening as safely as possible. The reality if you are a Small Business owner. You may not be able to hire everyone that was working for you prior to the outbreak . Unfortunately that is a true pick the Small Business owners are getting squeezed. As Jerome Powell said we gone from an economic crisis caused by the shutdown to a liquidity crisis, and if we are not careful we will get into a solvency crisis and there will not be any jobs for people to come back to. It is a very critical and difficult situation. Obviously our fingers are crossed that the Government People will do what is right. Thank you james mcbride. Always a pleasure. Thank you. Joining us is the former chief medical officer of the department of health and human services. You wrote about the importance of prioritizing veterans. Why are they more vulnerable . The thank you so much for having me. It is an honor to speak about our heroes and recall or remember why we need to keep them as a priority. The vulnerabilities are tremendous. Even Mental Health issues that they experience with ptsd, anxiety, and depression that is worsened by the current social isolation. Many of them have agerelated issues. There a special population when you think about veterans and active duty members. There are so many reasons why veterans are heroes for sacrificing so much for our country and they are disproportionately affected during this crisis. Indeed the risk is higher. You talk about prioritizing veterans. What are the steps that we should be taking . From a societal perspective being in touch with those folks who have served making sure that theyre not feeling undo isolation. They may be suffering. We need to look to Wounded Warriors and the other groups that do work for them. To see how we can help in the efforts to connect them with employment opportunities. We also have seen telemedicine advances that are ensuring that they are brought into the checked with a virtual visit. And give if we can to these organizations to ensure that they know that we are there. We need to make sure the veterans are connected weather is with economic opportunities, food, and certainly medical and Mental Health issues. You just outlined a number of steps that can be taken. So what are your fears if these steps are not taken . We know that 10,000 veterans have been affected. And 800 have passed away. I know that theres many great colleagues around the nation that are aware of the challenges. If we take it for granted that veterans are going to seek help we may miss many of them. We need to make sure that we are reaching out whether we are their neighbors, doctors, or professional organizations that look to help with them. My fear is that these are people who dont complain it may exacerbate their condition. Lets make sure that this does not happen and we remember our veterans. Thank you so much.
