The trumpet ministration is pushing Laboratory Evidence about the effective hotter temperatures on covid19. The under secretary for science and technology at the department of Homeland Security said yesterday that the data suggests the virus does not live as long in conditions that include heat, ultraviolet light, and humidity. However he stopped short of saying that warmer weather itself would defeat covid19. Joining us now to talk more about the findings here is, thank you so much for joining us today, we appreciate it and first, lets get right to the results here because it is interesting that heat and humidity could weaken the virus. Yes, such an important thing to hear just weeks away from officials summer starting, but this study, which came out of the department of Homeland Security as you mentioned, out of there Biocontainment Lab in maryland, look at specifically the stability of the virus, in the environment, to really answer some very important questions about the effect of temperature and humidity on the virus, as well as light, and they looked at the virus as halflife, how long particles last on a surface, and so what they found is that normal temperatures, around 70 to 75 low humidity, eight in our half life so 18 hours, about half of that viral part of the load, would be dying indicating. But if you add increased humidity, that drops it to six hours, so it is hostile to the virus in a higher humidity environment interview at higher temperatures, plus the higher humidity, it drops down to an hour but what was really interesting, and i think the big sort of news was that the addition of sunlight to a higher humidity environment on the surface, the virus, the halflife drops to two minutes and back, that was seen in aerosolized particles, so this is important in showcasing that these characteristics of the virus may be something that helps slow the virus transmission down during the summer months. And may allow us to buy some time while we are still looking for improving our stockpiles and looking at the medical therapeutics and ultimately the vaccination trials. That leads me to my next question because we are heading into the summer months, we know it is going to get hotter, do you think that maybe we will start to see the number of cases, maybe level off and not necessarily decrease . Well, that is definitely the hope, certainly with the whole effort of the social distancing, and getting folks to really only go out for essential groceries and whatever errands but ultimately the hope is that we do start to see that decline and slow down in the transmission, showing that at some parts of the economy may reopen around the country, maybe this makes it easy and maybe it even allows the folks at the government level, state level, to the if in fact where they could open it up, maybe feel a bit safer, maybe even the beaches and other places where there is light and we have vast, open spaces where we can social distance and we are not, we are in safer terms, and less likely to transmit the virus. Any final message you want people at home to keep in mind now that we know that this, with the results of this, i guess finding and the study . Absolutely. Number one, this is not a treatment or a cure but it is some use to hear about in terms of the characteristics of the virus. It is coming out of the department of Homeland Security and it probably really gives more meaning to sunlight is the best disinfectant and perhaps, maybe even studies from the uv rays may have some applications and innovations to allow us to be Safe Industries and businesses but really the take away is that the warmer weather and the some of that we enjoy so greatly here in california may actually be working for us. Wonderful. We will leave it at that. Former hhs chief medical officer. We appreciate your time.
