Treat those with coronavirus. We are going to reroute our medical Health Experts and people, our nurses, and other Health Support to help manage and maintain and support the people who have tested positive. Reporter for weeks, supervisors have been pushing the mayor to move the homeless into the largely vacant hotel rooms. They say the outbreak was tragically predictable. Nobody should be living in those environments, and so, what i am saying is, move these people now, and we should have moved them a month ago, and the people that you could not move, for whatever reason, should have been sleeping 6 feet apart, should have had temperature checks, should have had masks and gloves. They did not do that, and so now we have an outbreak. Reporter that can house up to 340 people at a time, the supervisor says many of the residents inside the shelter are waiting on the results of coronavirus tests for themselves. Live in San Francisco, christien kafton, ktvu fox 2 news. As we get further out, we actually see a trend of even better improvement in the number of hospitalizations that we have in california. And that this is actually signaling to us that our peak may not end up being as high as we actually planned around and expected. Okay, what you are seeing here is the redline that shows hospital patients in california are lower than the rest of the country. Below those projected numbers, which is the blue line, just about it. The u. S. Is climbing toward 490,000 cases of coronavirus according to data from Johns Hopkins university, and sadly, the death toll has now reached 18,000 across the country. That is up from 6800 just a week ago. That remains the hardest hit state with more than 172 cases but intensive care admissions have dropped for the First Time Since midmarch. Health officials at the white house called that a positive trend. But as encouraging as they are, we have not reached the peak, and so, every day we need to continue to do what we did yesterday, and the week before, and the week before that, because that is what, in the end, is going to take us up across the peak and down the other side. Experts warned that moving too soon to lift the stayat home orders could cause a spike in infections. Joining me now to talk more about the National Response now is former fema president ial appointee, mark to vote. Take you so much for joining us. Let me start with this here. The testing is a big issue right now, how many people have been tested in the country, and how many of those test have returned results so far . Well, we know the nine states of america is testing more than anybody else on earth, that is the good thing. It is about 118,000 people per day. There are 70, of that 118,000, those are all symptomatic patients, and of that we have 75 of the results back, and depending upon the age group that you are in, you know, 25, 45 to 65, it is ranging anywhere from 16 to about 22 of the people are testing positive for the coronavirus. Still certainly a big problem. The next issue many of us are talking about, is reopening the government but a lot of that is contingent upon testing people that are out there, the vulnerable groups. Will there be enough tests for them to go around for the government to the determined that we can open the government based on the tests that are issued . Well, one of the challenges we have in the country right now is that although there are no more test taking place, 15,000 machines whatever machines, if you will, that can do a test within just minutes and get results. There is also test that take 40 hours to get back. So depends on which one youre using the difficulty is you should never be able to test 340 million people, the population of the country, to be able to determine, you know, d open the government or not . So at some point, i envision what they will do is contact trace, they will go to hotspots in the country, try to trace those people and the contacts that those people has been in contact with, that will probably be about the best you can do because you just cant do it in a timely enough manner to be able to use that as a total measure of whether you open the country or not. Google and apple announced they had developed apps that will be able to do some of that Contract Tracing via cell phone. We moved to this, a small number of governors working turned that the federal government was actually going to start commandeering some of these muchneeded items that fema would start commandeering these ppe, what have you heard about this, what can you tell us about it . Well, there is a concern amongst the small minority governors that feel like, they assume fema is commandeering ppe, personal protective equipment. And that is not the case. What is happening is it is giving free pressurization. Is that weeks and days to get back your over to united states, but what with that in mind and prior toys where that goes, so 50 of those shipments are going to distributor, 50 of it, it goes to fema and theyre able to direct that to certain hotspots. I think the concern for some governors is that they are not receiving all that they want. We know that there are shortages in areas but they have to move that equipment to the hotspot areas like new york. Many people having though shortages all over the area but new york definitely needing the most. Frontline workers, lets talk about that because yesterday during a press conference, vp mike pence, he says he is announcing a waiver to allow healthcare workers to use cloth gowns as opposed to those disposable ones where they take them off at the end of the day and toss them away. What is the benefit here of using these cloth gowns . I understand at least what he said yesterday is that these used to be used years ago. What can you tell us about these . It is much like what we heard with the masks, there is a shortage of them, so now we are getting to the point with a shortage of gowns, the disposable gowns that are one by healthcare workers. With that shortage and the waiver, what they said to healthcare workers is you can use the cloth gowns they may not use a different setting because we are running short. We know there was a shortage, so we have company that now is up and running that will allow them to disinfect those masks so they can be reused so we are not going to see as great a shortage. Hopefully that is the same technology that could be used for the gowns, as well. We are thinking about the different ways of getting through this crisis. Mark devoe, former president ial appointee, thank you for your insight. Nine residents have now been dead or died because of the positive coronavirus results. We understand that the facility is now speaking out, as is a former worker. Henry lee joins us now with more on what the facility is doing as well as those with infections on this outbreak. Reporter when i was there myself checking temperatures and vitals, it was most horrifying thing ive ever seen. A nurse who works at the gate where care, some of the 25 infected staffers she spoke to were suffering. Night chills, nightmares, just the craziest things you ever heard. It is very bad. They may be next, circling a petition. The operation love drop off is taking place at the village theater. Accepting personal protective equipment donations for front line medical care workers. Some of the items people are dropping off include masks, protective gowns, gloves, wipes and hand sanitizer. It takes place as a critical need for ppe continues to grow. We are in desperate need of nurses because, they all call me directly and crying and we need these things that you have. Extra things at home, just bring them to us. Because there is a desperate need out there. Donations can be dropped off again tomorrow, at the village theater and art gallery from 10 in the morning to three in the afternoon. And next week, at the Livermore Chamber of commerce. With warmer weather and plenty of sun, residents weapon sheltering in place for three weeks are hoping for some time outside this weekend. But as jesse gary reports, people are being advised to just stay inside. Reporter the welcome sign is definitely not out for those hoping to enjoy anyone of the bay areas myriad of parks. This easter is special this year. We need folks to stay home this weekend. Reporter officials in all sections of the bay area. That sentiment, all 73 parks in the east Bay Regional Park District are closed to drive in visitors. Guests can still walk the trails. All those areas of gathering are closed. Reporter trails for walking and biking are open, but large groups are highly discouraged. San jose city Officials Say regional parks and parking lots are closed saturday and sunday, but Neighborhood Parks are open. You can probably walked to these in your neighborhood, close to home. And those ones remain open for the holiday weekend. Just asking everybody to observe the physical distancing and to avoid gatherings, no egg hunts. Reporter a restriction limiting residents to within a fivemile radius of their homes will be in effect for the weekend, and all county parks are closed. We believe we are at a critical point in our covid19 response effort, the health and safety and wellbeing of our visitors, of our guests, our residents, our of the utmost importance. Reporter the county parks are already open, however you cannot drive to the open spaces here, over the last 10 days, more than 10,001 citations have been written for violating that order. Starting good friday, those warnings become 100 fines. We know this is a trying and difficult time for everybody. But to do so, we need to make sure it is within your own neighborhood. Officials in Santa Cruz County say all beaches and parks there are closed, until april 15 to prevent the spread of covid19. It is a difficult new normal for many bay area residents who moved here specifically for the weather and the Great Outdoors only to be stuck inside on a holiday weekend. In san jose, jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news. We cannot stress that enough, if you go outside this weekend, just be safe and stay within your own neighborhoods. Happy friday to you, not sure what that means these days, but you are right, it is going to be nicer out there for the weekend, and if you are going to be getting out around your neighborhood, or maybe hanging out in the backyard we have plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures on the way. Giving you a look here at the temperatures right now, we came up by several degrees in many areas today. Santa rosa reported 67, San Francisco right now about 59 after slipping, a little bit warmer early in the afternoon, oakland at 62, livermore 63 and san jose at 65, and a beautiful view their of the Golden Gate Bridge you can see it is a bright one out there, there is a look at the 24 temperature change, we are five degrees over concord, fairfield number on the bay area, a few degrees warmer in the north bay, a tad cooler right along the east bay. The wind kicking up just a little bit this afternoon, generally like most of the day but a wind gusts up to 24, half moon bay, and hayward reporting entre brees at 16. I expect 40s by tomorrow morning, here is a different perspective for you, alive you there of the satellite mostly sunny skies and a few clouds over higher elevations. You can see wear that storm that brought us rain over the weekend and kept us very unsettled for most of the week now continues over southern california, taking with it the moisture and the cloud cover, this will continue to move east into arizona by tomorrow. Right now it looks like la, and san diego getting a good amount of rain. We will start out with partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies and for the afternoon, notice the coastline covered in that gray there, so partly sunny expected for our coast for tomorrow, here is a look at sunday morning where we start out with partly sunny, partly cloudy conditions and then for the afternoon for folks that will be celebrating easter, partly cloudy, still some of the wraparound moisture moving into the sierra, as far as temperatures for tomorrow morning, mid 40s expected in the south bay right around morgan hills, 49 degrees expected for San Francisco. Afternoon highs should be just as pleasant as today, when i come back ill have a look at what you can ask act for tomorrow, the rest of the weekend, and the extended forecast with even warmer weather expected them. More on that, coming up. Apparent for the next potential nationwide shortage as we fight the coronavirus pandemic, why officials said they needed to run ventilators. Coming up, and study showing just how far the virus can spread during outdoor exercises. How much distance you might want to consider the next time you pass a runner or cyclist. Gov. Newsom teams up with dwayne the rock johnson for a firesi everyone is working a little differently now. So we can still answer your calls. And we are monitoring our system 24 7 to ensure that we have a fast reliable network, keep the customers connected, and making sure people are staying safe. And were still on the road. Solving Critical Issues as they arise. Go to xfinity. Com prepare. Thank you. A lot of folks ask me why their dishwasher doesnt get everything clean. I tell them, it may be your detergent. Thats why more dishwasher brands recommend cascade platinum. With the soaking, scrubbing and rinsing built right in. For sparklingclean dishes, the first time. Cascade platinum. Around here, nobody ever does it. I didnt do it. So when i heard they added ultra oxi to the cleaning power of tide, it was just what we needed. Dad . I didnt do it. 1 stain and odor fighter, 1 trusted. Its got to be tide. Nationwide demand search some 3 , they are essentially useless thank you so much for being with us today. We know a lot of hardhit states are relying on ventilators to help patients. What can we do about it . There used in conjunction of other at third, if need be, a paralytic. Sometimes use one of these, sometimes you is more than one. Obviously right now we dont have any declared shortages, we dont know any hospital that is running short of his medications, but perhaps if we do start running short, what we will notice is we may not have our first choice of the medication or we may not have the specific dose that we are used to serve medication comes in 10 or 20 mg remain at the 30 mg but we can use the 10 and 22 added together and use that. What can mean is perhaps opening the door, for more errors, perhaps it will take longer and waste some time but i think we will still be able to find a way around to be getting our patients what they need. There thinking about when the shelter in place is going to be over and we talk about slowly opening up the economy in a couple of weeks, and what should people keep in mind so we dont have a second wave when we are allowed to go back out of our homes . We need to start planning about when we can venture out but i think before we do that we need to make sure that we are ready to venture out and one of the main things we need to be prepared for is to be able to aggressively test everyone. If we can test people and we can isolate people who are positive with coronavirus, we can trace the contact that they have had the last few days so we can contain small outbreaks before they get big and they spread and we are back to square one where we were at during this particular outbreak. I know it has been a week now since the cdc made the recommendation that people wear cloth masks while going outside. I know at my local Grocery Store, they are asking you questions, if you have any type of symptoms before they let you inside and will even heard some Grocery Stores are not letting people in store, they dont have a mask on. What you think about that . I think it is really prudent to move because then you recommend, the recommendation states we need universal masking when we are outside the house and i agree with that because this is not just about ourselves anymore. Inadvertently, without knowing, if we are positive, we can pass this virus on to other people, and that is what we need to protect others from. If we are a systematic, we are not passing this on to those were more vulnerable than us. I know so many precautions are being taken here in california, even down in la county, they just extended the stayathome order down until may 15, do you think that is the right move, do you think that more cities will follow suit . I think it is the right move, i dont think were ever going to be faulted for being overly cautious, and as a result of that, that is the most important thing for us. We need to make sure we have everything in place before we venture out, and so, i think la county is doing the right thing and i think other areas will be following suit pretty soon. Before we let you go, i want to ask you, what is your advice to people watching now . It is friday, it is the weekend, they want to get outside and get outside. What advice do you have before they leave their homes . Definitely stay home as much as you can, if you need to get a little bit of exercise, try to do it in your backyard if possible, that is not an option. Keep your distance from people. A little bit unrelated, call your loved ones, stay in touch, and above all, be positive. We will get through this. Is only a matter of time. Before you leave your home, only for central services. I always appreciate your time, thank you for coming on. Coming up, easter weekend will look a lot different for families across the country. Ahead, how you can still make the most of it while social distancing. With 1. 2 trillion in arson and car loans out there, what rights do consumers have in avoiding the procession if they cannot pay . More than you might realize. Those details, coming up next. Everyone is working a little differently now. So we can still answer your calls. And we are monitoring our system 24 7 to ensure that we have a fast reliable network, keep the customers connected, and making sure people are staying safe. And were still on the road. Solving Critical Issues as they arise. Go to xfinity. Com prepare. Thank you. Can live with them as long as they want. Gov billions of people are spending this good friday under stayathome orders. Many churches are holding Online Services and the traditional way of the cross ritual in jerusalem was performed by monks and masks without any onlookers. The service was also held the notre dame cathedral, almost one year to the day when it was nearly destroyed by a fire. Officials say for the most part, people are obeying orders to worship privately at home in avoid large gatherings. We will spend easter alone, we will see our children and our grandchildren in video conference. It is very sad but the situation is what it is. Police and both rome and jerusalem say they will deploy extra personnel on Easter Sunday to enforce social distancing roles. Thanks to coronavirus, they will not be any packed churches this easter weekend, instead, convocations are adapting with many of them moving their Services Online as they have been for the past couple of weeks. Ann rubin has a behindthe scenes look at the preparations going on, to make sure it is a holiday to remember for everyone. Reporter the preparations have been extensive, in addition to the pastors, the videographers and editors have been hard at work making sure the online sermons go off without a hitch. Pastor john greg is not used to speaking to an empty room. The musicians here are not used to playing in one, on a typical sunday the crowd at the bay church in concord would approach 2000. The first thing you notice is the energy, second thing you notice is you might get run over if you stay in one place too long. It is really a hubbub of activity. Reporter coronavirus changed all of that. Now, Easter Services planned six months in the making have been modified in a matter of weeks. I want to encourage you reporter all simmons have moved online. Fortunately the bay Church Already have the infrastructure in place to make that happen. We have scriptwriters, we have people that do all of the editing, we have a bunch of computer geniuses. Reporter the family will be watching, both regular sermon and the kids one, but they say this solitary easter will be a big change for them. Will be staying at home and watching Services Online againk the standard things that we do on easter. Reporter still, they are grateful that technology is keeping their Church Family connected. There are difficulties in this situation but there is also, you know, we can make lemonade out of lemons. Reporter the church says that is what they are doing, making the best of the situation. There even helping other churches get their easter sermons online, to. They say in a time of social distancing, we should stay connected, any way that we can. Just being able to hear somebodys voice or see their image, just creates, you know, the warm fuzzies and all the connectedness and that is enough for now until we get through this scary medical moment and everybody can get out and do life again. Reporter the bay church has two Good Friday Service is scheduled for this evening, and then at seven, more services scheduled for throughout the easter weekend. Everyone is adapting the way that they can. In the face of a pandemic, the city of pacifica is keeping one easter tradition alive. They are holding what it is called a reverse the spring egg hunt. Kids are asked to paint eggs or draw pictures of eggs and leave them in front of their homes or in their windows and the Fire Department is escorting the easter bunny and through the city looking for all of those colorful creations. It is a virtual kind of thing, so we will be pointing them out, we will not be gathering any and we wont be giving it out, we want to really emphasize practicing social distancing and try to give everybody something fun to do while they are at home, and i know, we are in like week four, now, so a lot of people are looking forward to something and it is spring break right now. They will post pictures of all the eggs they find on the pacifica recreation facebook page, and asked neighbors to share their photos, posting them with the hashtag pacifica strong. The Federal Reserve reports u. S. Consumers have run up 1. 2 trillion in auto loans. But untold numbers of those consumers simply have no money to make the monthly payments, due to the nationwide shut down. Tom baker joins us now live with what consumers need to know about all of this. Reporter consider this, the average American Household actually has a car loan owes about 20,000. But if you cannot pay, it might as will be 1 million. In car loans and leases, a deal is a deal, subject to reposession if one stops paying, because the lender pretty much as all of the power, economic and Legal Advantage in the contract. However, things have changed. Reporter prof. Of finance and economics at Stanford Universitys graduate school of business says four lenders, the change has brought about by the tidal wave of potential delinquent car loans themselves. What are they going to do with it in the short intermediateterm . Who is going to buy it and for how much . Everybody has to reassess the market again. Many vehicles have been purchased under very long loans and leases, up to 84 months with many of the vehicles often worth far less than the remaining outstanding payments. Whatever car you thought it would be worse in a booming economy is not the same as what is worth in a recession economy. Reporter to avoid filling city parking lots with repossessed cars, most major banks are deferring payments for up to four months on a case bycase basis. In light of new situations, everybody has to invoke their legal rights as well as what they want to do. Reporter since most of these Companies Really are willing to sit down and talk with you and work out a deal, the best advice is dont hide from them, dont hide the car, call them up, get online, see what you can do and that will make you feel a lot better. So many people in the same situation, a lot of companies are working with consumers right now. Coming up, a special delivery, how one san ramon restaurant is taking care of healthcare workers on the front line. But first, it is been about a month since the mlb postponed its season. Major League Baseball discussing a wide range of options now to get players back on the field. Nothing is imminent right now. Major League Baseball players were on final approach to the coming season when the coronavirus shut things down in march. The firstyear manager was starting to feel comfortable with what he could expect from his team but now like the rest of us, he is waiting to see what eventually becomes of the season, and when it is inappropriate to make that a priority. Obviously we would love to have a date to work back from to get our players fully ready for the major League Baseball season. We dont have that and we dont have, wendition. Independent of baseball. Reporter it is a fair o ask organized workouts and shelter in place been practiced you just how you do that . And players finally get a green light, how long will it take them to get ready for games that count . There is no how long does it take because every player is an individual, and they get ready for the season differently, so by way of an example, i was an outfielder. On day one, i will be able to play safely and the way i would do that is by running full speed, four, five times a day, take five or six highintensity swings to simulate what the game action was like. I would make a lot of throws, even if i do not have a partner and i might not be sharp when i got into the box against the pictures but you Better Believe that i would be physically conditioned for those activities. They have expectation, his players are doing some version of that. We are committed to giving players kind of that creative fuel, and some accountability markers. They are staying in touch with each other, Coaching Staff with our players, we might compare this in 1995. That strike was settled on april 2, and the teams were given a little more than three weeks to get ready for an abbreviated schedule. All everybody is waiting for now is the knowledge that it is safe, and to make some kind of plan. A Nonprofit Group in the bay area has launched a new program to help those were at high risk of becoming infected with the virus. The food is prepped in kitchens in san rafael, and set out to homes across marin and sonoma counties. What we focus on is a really heart healthy diet that is all made with whole foods, whole grains, no processed foods, processed sugar, very high in vegetables, and whole foods, and we are also unique in that we do all organic meals. It allows the people to avoid trips to the Grocery Store and raise the risk of becoming infected. Stepping up in a time of need, how those once on the front lines of the aids crisis in San Francisco are helping during the current pandemic using scraps from a very famous quote. More sunshine outside of our doors today and as a result, temperatures right about where they should be, ill have a look at what you can ask act for the rest of your day area friday and into the weekend, coming up. Medicit help people right now. Because thats the present we wanted to live in. And thats the future we all want to see. Abbvie. Here. Now. Abbvie. The coronavirus is reminding many people of the aids pandemic that began in the 1980s and as rob roth shows us the creators of the enduring symbol of that crisis is springing into action again but this time, in a different way. For those were once on the front lines of the aids crisis in San Francisco, what is happening now feels like a recurring nightmare. No one should have to go through to pandemics in one lifetime and here we are. It is kind of dij vu from the aids epidemic, but somehow worse even because i cant comfort anybody or touch them, or, you know, do anything physically with them. Reporter they are two of the creators of the aids quilt back in 1987. It quickly became the International Illustration of the total eight was taken, the names of loved ones lost each stitched onto a cloth panel, memorializing them on a quilt that grew larger and larger. Now that quilt is the connection to the coronavirus pandemic. They have sown these masks, hundreds of them, out of the very material that is left over from the aids quilt. It made me feel better, and the second do something. They are going to a nonprofit called Bay Area Community services which works with Homeless People in alameda, contra costa, and solano countys. We are on the front lines of the housing crisis. And so when somebody said we are going to bring you this tool, this gift, to help you keep doing what you are doing, it is so moving. The masks will help workers who go to encampments and People Living in group housing. Multiple beds to a very large room, so social distancing is very difficult. It has been a real comfort to me and to a lot of people around the quilt to know that there is a way to still be helpful. Reporter still, the same fears are turned up once again, and somehow, the anxiety is once again some sewing. I love people, ill of the world and i want to get back to the way it was so i can be a part of doing that. Reporter they have made some 700 masks so far and they say they have no intention of slowing down. People continue to do good in this time that so many of us need help. Switching gears to whether. Working from home today, she is keeping us on top of the forecast and has been slowly improving and probably looking good into the weekend. After seeing beneficial rain over the weekend we were just sort of like in and out of that unsettled weather for what seems like days, a few showers here and there, cloudy, cool, not the case today. A little bit of cloud cover but by the afternoon we turned partly cloudy, mostly clear, and im looking outside my window right now and theres plenty of sunshine overhead, there is a look at the storm, again, that is continuing to not only bring us the on and off rain but just a lot of cloud cover over the last few days that kept the temperatures below average. This is bringing you rain to areas of southern california, san diego, even baja, california.
