Really tough. California has by far sustained the largest job lead out. We had over 925,000 initial new claims filed the week of april 4, added to the over 1 million claims. Filed the previous week, we now have over 2 million new claims just filed within two weeks. The National State and claimant rates are now shirley well over what they were during the worst of the Great Recession and many more job losses are coming. Any federal aid or paycheck protection plans including the more than 2 trillion announced by the Federal Reserve today is just to keep the economy from collapsing. But he says we should not, and cannot wait for the virus to be totally conquered. We need now, to start looking at a plan in california, start opening up the economy and seeing what it will look like. In all likelihood reopening would involve a gradually phasedin combination of regular testing, workplace social distancing, and some residual working at home for some workers. A. Of months, perhaps even a longer, to get the economy restarted. Most workers ive talked to want to go back to work in some phase. Now, while there is still some hiring going on, youve heard about the post office, amazon, grocery stores, losses far outweigh any gains. Reporting live, tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. I wonder so many people hurting right now, going paycheck to paycheck, now they will be without a paycheck or maybe one or two months, how do you recover from that. Well, the problem is, of course some of that money will come back to them but the damage will take place right now. If you waive certain things like dinging peoples credit or you allow them to pay late or borrow money at no Interest Rate so they wont get penalized for that, you can come out of this, but the country will not come out of this anytime quickly and it certainly will not come out of it the same country because you have to recognize that regardless of what happens or who we assist blame on later this is a complete failure of the Health System to really detect quickly and take care of this kind of a problem. That is a real problem because the other side of that problem is biological warfare and weve just stripped our hand telling a lot of people that we are very susceptible to that. So we will come out of this a much different country. Tom vacar live preston a, tom, thank you. Despite the staggering appointment numbers, stocks rose on wall street. He also now plans to provide vouchers and stipends for travel and shelter for frontline healthcare workers so they can stay closer to their patients and isolated from their families. Workers will be able to stay in nearby hotels which are offering deep discounted rates. We will extend those deep discounts directly to our caregivers and in other cases for low income workers we will provide 100 reimbursement so that they are allowed to stay closer to their patients and provide them the opportunity not to worry about being out of pocket or worry about exposing their families or god forbid worried about another night sleeping in their car so they can stay closer to the needs in their communities. As of right now i have my hesitations to leave or they are but right now this is probably the only option at this point. Schools are gearing up to get students back into a virtual classroom. Christien kafton is in the city with the plan that rolled out today. Some long wants and logistical problems as well. Reporter the district says there were logistical problems but they say they are learning from those problems and will be ready when kids resume classes on monday. San Francisco Unified School District is gearing up to resume teacher led instruction for more than 50,000 students. Teachers are planning typically about four hours of instruction and at the High School Level they are working depending on the s taken. The district suggest that the parents of youngest students begin picking up packets for learning materials. It was easy, i got here just in time. I heard some people saying there are no more kindergarten packets left. Others were met with long lines and little information, parents trying to gather supplies waited in line for hours, some worried about gathering in a large group in the middle of a pandemic. When you send group text to the people, most districts in San Francisco to come on out starting today to pick up packets for your kids education, probably you should be ready and be prepared. The district says problems with transporting materials to some schools and volunteers led to problems and three of the nine distribution points. We did give out 4000 across various sites and we do recognize those issues where a hardship on our families and we are very apologetic for that. The district said they will soon be making packets Available Online so families can download and print them out for themselves. The district has also been working hard to get laptops out for older students, learning for them will merrily be led by teachers online. The teachers know the students, where they were before the closure, so now theres a lot more differentiation and they can engage the students even more with the content we provide and they create. For those nearing the end of high school, the district is working with colleges and universities to get the students ready for the next academic step. Weve been in conversations about what are the applications for our graduating seniors. So far everyone has been super generous and responsive and recognizes the impact this is having. The district says it is all still a work in progress and while education continues next week they will continue distributing materials and computers to students who need them throughout the week. The School District is still working to determine if they will be stretching the academic calendar into the summer due to time missed because of the coronavirus. Public transit systems in the bay area and around the country are facing huge cuts in the number of riders, but they are also already planning on ramping service backup when more workers are allowed to return. However, they are still concerned about how to keep riders from getting too close to one another. Theyve got multiple levels of challenges ahead of them because it is hard to predict how many people will come back on mass transit and help weekly they will come back on mass transit. So figuring out how many operators they need and how much equipment they need will be the first challenge. Even when some workers are allowed to return it will be difficult for systems to get back in when it comes to their budget after weeks of not collecting fares. The bigger problem will be how will they pay for everything because most transit in california runs on a combination of income from farebox and sales tax. And of course with no riders theres no farebox. And with the economy on shutdown, the sales tax will greatly be reduced. All right, we had a cloudy, partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, partly sunny day. Some areas warmer than yesterday, but still on the mild side. Very cloudy out there you will see the story with the graphic. Look at the flow of this thing. Look how big it is. I will measure it out for you. About 800 miles in the radius on that thing, so its a big storm. In Southern California its the real deal, they are getting rain, and theyve had rain for the last couple of days. This is the same system that brouand snow, bu now its just as cloud cover. Areas of the north bay getting some good clearing right now. Its sort of a blocked system, in other words this low is kind of trapped in there. He wants to migrate off, and it will, but slowly. Its kicked down into Southern California then booted to the east within 24 or 36 hours. And it looks like it will be down there a little bit into tonight and tomorrow as well. For us, it is mild out there, current temperatures, 64 in fairfield, cooler on the coast, and then you will see the difference from yesterday. 2 degrees warmer in livermore, and 3 degrees warmer at sfo. And i almost think theres a rain chance out there, too. You see the little blue lines coming down, and it could easily be. A lot of it is not hitting the ground, it is drying up, so as we go forward, into your thursday, your friday, saturday, and sunday, things will warm up. Back into the 70s, i will see you back here with the details. Still to come, and unthinkable crime in the south bay, how thieves stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of masks and gloves that were meant to go to First Responders. A Small Business in san jose was burglarized this week. The owners say more than 20,000 worth of masks, gloves and Hand Sanitizer were taken. As ann rubin explains, it was merchandise that was supposed to go to First Responders and essential workers. The owners of this janitorial supply couldnt believe their eyes. Someone had broken in, apparently by throwing a large boulder through the front door. Glass everywhere, we came in and a lot of supplies were missing. They make the thieves took gloves, facemasks, Hand Sanitizer and even toilet paper. The owners estimate the loss upwards of 20,000. What is worse, most of the items were already earmarked for organizations like chp, vta and health clinics. We need these essentials for our communities, and to help workers and for people who really need it. We are in an epidemic where we are short on supply, and to have someone income and take hours applying is very unfortunate. And authority say since the value of this kind of equipment has skyrocketed, they see more and more people trying to capitalize on that. The California AttorneyGenerals Office has a task force looking into price gouging online and San Jose Police are investigating this theft. Either they sell it on line or if they are afraid to get caught they will sell it on the street. They say there is really no way for them to replace the inventory. Demand is high and supply is backordered. They will do their best to get what they have left into the right hands. In the meantime they are taking safety precautions from keeping this from happening again. This was a little wakeup call, so we are adding bars to the business. Dont be, be prepared, we dont know what is happening next. They were watching surveillance and say they make out a gray suv with three people inside. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Jose Police. Still to come, since the coronavirus outbreak, governor gavin newsom and President Trump have changed their tunes, they are taking turns now praising each other. Coming up we hear from a political expert on how that is helping with the response to the coronavirus. Also ahead, a covid19 outbreak and a bay area jail. The changes the Sheriffs Department says they are already making and white advocates say those changes are not enough. Sadly another day of record setting deaths in new york coming up, the new study that says most of the cases in the state there did not originate from asia. A federal judge has ordered the release of four immigrants who were detained at Detention Centers in california. The judge said that their age and medical conditions make them vulnerable to the coronavirus. The aclu and other civil Rights Groups filed a lawsuit on behalf of those inmates and several others last week before being released they have conditions of having diabetes, severe asthma and kidney disease. The number of inmates infected with the coronavirus in santa rita jail sharply increased this week. Some people are now demanding that the Sheriffs Department take drastic steps to take people inside the jail, including releasing all of the inmates. At the beginning of the week, it was one person, then three, by thursday at least a dozen inmates in santa rita jail tested positive for covid19. They are not given any information about what is going on with them. Civil rights attorney said if the number in infections continues to increase it will start to look like a county jail or rikers island. Thursday she joined dozens of advocates calling on the Sheriffs Office and stop booking inmates in jail and begin releasing everyone else. These men and women have to be released in whatever ways we can. There is a lot to this equation you just cant open the doors and let everybody out. Sergeant ray kelly says the Sheriffs Office already made major strides in lowering the inmate population. Theyve been fighting and releasing people who previously may have not fight. And since that stated home shelter in place order that number has decreased by 700 inmates or 25 . The District Attorney was called on to release inmates with six months or less to serve. He said a county jail sentence should not be a potential death sentence. They agreed to Early Release for many inmates but not if it will jeopardize the safety of victims and communities. There is about 1300 individuals in jail that will not qualify for any type of release. Those individuals are in here for serious crimes. At least one profile inmate will be released on ankle monitoring as early as friday. He is facing 36 counts of Involuntary Manslaughter in the ghost ship warehouse fire. He will be releasing him due to the coronavirus threat. He has a hearing by teleconference on friday to finalize the order. The District Attorneys office said it strongly disagrees with the decision. Workers at ike over in hayward workers walked out at the mcdonalds on watkins street. Similar demonstrations also took place at burger king, and taco bells in Southern California. They say they are not being given enough protective equipment, cleaning supplies or sickly periods to make you likely noticed a steady stream of praise from Governor Newsom and President Trump for each other. Its a shift from their typically contentious relationship. Greg lee tells us there is a reason for the change in tune. Twitter fights, of public were words, countless lawsuits, its no secret there is no love lost between resident trump and the california governor but the coronavirus pandemic is changing both of their tunes. I must tell you that you have a newsom has been gracious. Los angeles california, and all of california. The relationship has been strong, and im not doing it to kiss the ring. Im just being forthright with the president , he returns calls, reaches out, hes been proactive. Its a stark contrast from the governors of washington and michigan who have been critical of the hetero governments response. He is constantly chirping and i guess complaining would be a nice way of saying it. We are doing a great job for the great state of washington. Michigan, she has no idea what is going on. President trump takes everything very personally. When you attack him personally he has ways of getting even. It is wise to put politics aside and tap into the federal governments vast resources during an emergency. Governor gavin newsom made a smart move of not wanting to be in that battle. He understands that President Trump has the combinations of the federal bolts where we can get all types of aid. President trump said he sent the navy ship mercy at newsoms request. A good policy is good politics and i think it is paying off for the president and the governor in this situation. The new York Governor Andrew Cuomo says a record 799 people died in the past 24 hours. Despite the number of deaths, the governor says the number of hospitalizations due to the virus is still coming down. The Governor Also Announced that the state is taking on the difficult task of bringing in additional Funeral Directors to deal with all the bodies. And addressing the magnitude of the lives lost so far to covid 19. We lost 2753 lives in 9 11, weve lost more than 20,000 thousand lives to this crisis. That is so shocking and painful, and breathtaking, i dont even have the words for it. Right now there are more than 159,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state. A new study finds the majority of coronavirus cases in new york originated in europe, not asia. Doctors from mount sinai used gene sequencing to track the cases. Researchers say the virus will continue to mutate as long the british Prime MinisterBoris Johnson has been moved out of intensive care as he continues to recover from the coronavirus area he is still in the hospital though and is being monitored very carefully. He is 55 years old and was taken to a hospital in london on sunday because of a cough and fever. On monday his condition got worse and he was admitted to the icu. Coming up, how one wildlife experience is suffering and how you can help. Plus, nonprofits are making sure that some of the most susceptible are able to stay at home. And we are airing super bowl xlii this weekend. New England Patriots first the new york giants. You can catch it right here on ktvu this sunday at noon. Like many businesses and nonprofits, the lindsey wildlife experience in walnut creek is having trouble staying afloat due to the coronavirus. So the museum and Wildlife Rehab Center has launched a fundraising effort to help keep their Educational Services in their Animal Hospital running. Joining us now to talk about this Fundraising Campaign is carlos delarosa, the executive director of the lindsey wildlife experience, let me start with this, how bad is it for you right now . Well, we are still open, we are still receiving patient at the hospital and taking care of all of our animals. So for them, it is not too bad at all. Its a break from the crowds. For us, when you consider for us, its 100,000 people a year that come and visit the center, and all of those people are gone right now, it is a crunch. How much have you raised and how much more do you need, and what specifically with that money be used for . Well, we have several things we are continuing. I mentioned the hospital, we are still receiving injured wildlife in our Wildlife Hospital and that will not stop. That is something the community has come to expect from us, and it is part of our mission and we will continue to do that. We also have 74 animal ambassadors. These are animals that live at the facility that required daily maintenance. So we have a small crew of people working at the hospital with all the safety precautions. They are also working with the animals that live in the facility. All of our Public Programs have stopped. All visitors can come. We have admissions, we have the store, programs that we do, all of that literally evaporated when you dont have people to serve. So we intend to continue to take care of the animals and take care of the animal ambassadors, and the hospital, and we are turning to online content. Since people cant come to us right now, we will go to that read its a way for us to be able to weather this storm we are living through, and maintain and keep intact our people, our facilities and our programs. So we have the wildlife campaign, it is of bridge fund where we intend to raise about 250,000 by the end of june. With that we should be able to maintain full staff, most of them working from home in our facility it was open for wildlife industries. Ive been there once and one of the things i remember, seeing the birds outside, watching them fly it was fascinating, how are your animals doing . Our animals are doing great, some of them have been taken home by some volunteers who have facilities at home, so they are on vacation right now, we still take our animals outside for exercise every day. So those who are outdoors and can still walk around can still see some activities. We are not encouraging groupings or people to come to see them, but the animals continue to have their daily exercise and care. Carlos, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us tonight, thank you. If youd like to donate to the lindsey wildlife experience, we have a link on our website, ktvu. Com. You will find it by clicking on web links. Still ahead, a special project in the north bay to keep people with weakened immune systems fed. Here at this home in novato, this father and son are making a very special delivery on thursday. They are delivering about a weeks worth of carefully prepared meals, to ruth, who was the fifth grade teacher of the young man, that was him then, he is a High School Senior now. She was my favorite teacher in elementary school. Now retired, she has a heart condition on top of a pest battle with breast cancer, a high risk for covid19, she should not leave her house during the pandemic. It was absolutely amazing and not surprised the student would do that. It means everything when i see the smile on her face when i bring the food to her door. She is one of the many people with vulnerable immune systems you are receiving specially prepared meals from the Nonprofit Community project. The client list has more than doubled since the coronavirus struck and it includes three people so far with covid19. The meals are prepared in kitchens and then delivered, up to 20 at a time, by a team of volunteers. What we focus on is a really heart healthy diet made with whole foods, whole grains, no processed foods, no processed sugar, very high in vegetables, we are also in unique in that we do all organic meals. I have not been to a store, on my fourth week of home isolation and my goal is when i get totally healthy again i would love to volunteer for the program. The idea is to keep these immune compromised patients indoors. That lessens their chances of becoming sick and using hospital beds that could otherwise go to covid19 patients. If you know someone who is making a difference of any kind, we want to hear from you. Just email your story along with pitchers or video to my hero at fox tv. Com. Ufc 249 has been canceled. Temperatures tomorrow will end up being in the upper 60s, maybe squeak out a low 70. But after that saturday and sunday temperatures really elevate. So for tomorrow, theres that fog and low clouds, and much more blue tomorrow. This is a San Francisco model, but it works for san jose.
