Now, that is in addition to the nearly 10 million unemployment claims filed over the previous two weeks. 10 of American Workers are now unemployed as businesses have been forced to shut down to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Many people have been unable to file a claim because state unemployment offices are overwhelmed by the volume of people trying to file. You yelp planning to lay off or furlough more than 2000 employees. The Online Review plattform made that announcement saying they had plans to let go of 1000 workers and furlough 1100. The state of california. Those are the real heroes of this moment. And we need to talk more about care for our care gives. We have talked rhetorically meeting the need of psychological first aid by extending our appreciation, a good word kind of support. We all need a little bit of moral support, but we need to do more than that and provide the kind of support that increasingly is needed for a workforce that is deeply stressed out and deeply stretched. Families that have been broken apart because their loved ones are spending 24 hours a day, seven days a week, attending to the needs of others and not able to come back home. In many cases, they are sleeping in their cars overnight. And in other cases unwilling, because they have been exposed to this virus to even want to expose their family back at home, and are spending their own money to go to a motel or a hotel overnight. We have heard countless examples of these stories. And instead of continuing to do something more and so i am really pleased today to announce an effort in the state of california to directly support those care gives, those healthcare workers, those frontline heroes by providing them vouchers and stipends and in many cases low wage workers 100 reimbursable costs and hotels all up and down the state of california. We currently have an inventory. Over 150 hotels that have been part of a bulk purchasing of a program through our department of general services. Some of the nicest and finest hotel chains in the world are participating in the Program Providing deep discounts to the state of california. Ll exextend those to our care gives and in other cases for low income workers will provide 100 reimbursements. Provide the opportunity not to worry about being out of pocket or worry about exposing their families or god forbid workly about another night sleeping in their car so they can stay closer to the needs in their communities. Lets remember people are commuting for an hour to an hour and a half in the good days. And the idea that you are doing a 12hour shift and at 2 00 or 3 00 in the morning have to drive all the way back home only to get right back up and do a double shift early in the morning. So that is the announcement we wanted to make up front and in addition to that, i wanted to just extend a few updates in terms of data and new information that has come in as we do on a daily basis in terms of the total numbers of individuals impacted and currently testing positive for covid 19. The official state count of those that have tested positive. 400 in 9 492 families torn apart. These are not statistics behind every stat is a real person. Real lives that have been torn apart. 492 lives lost now in the state of california. 50 other families torn up yesterday that lost their lives over the course of the last 24 hours to this virus. 1132 individuals are in our icus, and 2825 are now hospitalized in the system. Let me just put that into statistical terms in terms of percentaging increase. The total number is roughly 4. 1 increase from yesterday. And here very importantly, it c been able to communicate in any of my daily briefings. That is the total number of individuals in the icu. That number of 1132 represents a drop of 1. 9 from yesterday. One data point is going to trend. One data trend. One data point is not a headline. I caution anybody to read too much into that one point of data. But nonetheless, it is encouraging and it again reinforces the incredible work that all of you are doing to practice physical distancing. The stayathome is working in the state of california. That curve has been bent in this state, but it is also stretched. And we continue to be vigilant and do more every moment of every day to procure the physical asset and care sites as well as the appropriate levels of ppe. We made a significant announcement about that last night. And that includes ventilators that we confidently have secured within the Hospital System and our own state cash to meet the needs based upon our models and projections. And on that front, let me just reinforce a number that i came a week or so ago. Oh, let me go back. About a month ago, i reminded all of you that we have 7587 ventilators that were identified within our 416 hospitals. That is the number that we ing this curve. We said it at the hospitals like the state. Were going to do everything they can to procure even more ventilators. Refurbished ventilators. And the like. They had done just that. No longer 7587 in the hospitals. And 11,063 ventilators which is good news. They can like the state of california to procure ventilators. I make that point to make this point. I think some people have expressed some concern about the willingness to extend a hand to new jersey, new york, illinois. By lending ventilators to deal with the crisis at him. To american sides and moral and ethical, to save lives. All of us americans. But also responsible in context. The Hospital System alone is currently utilizing 31. 89 of all their ventilators. Forgive me for the precision. But i think you deserve precision. 31. 89 of those ventilators are currently being used which means over 8000 ventilators are not being used within our Hospital System. You i want to secure any anxiety. Ventilators are different than personal protective gear. They are consumed personal protective gear, and they are destroyed with again the exception of n95 mask which is we are now able to reuse because of the new system that we have procured that will be operational by april 20th of this point. But ventilators can be used over and over and over again. And when those ventilators are used to save lives in thos other states, we have the Firm Commitment from those states to send them back to the state of california and why . Begin, our curve is not bending like other states. We cant just sit on assets when we can save lives and help other americans. I just want to clear up any anxiety in that space or any misinformation that has been expressed in this space. I am not naive in this front that we live in the aggregate. I give you those numbers. That westbound the Hospital System themselves, they have a remarkable mutual support, program, and strategy, in the state of california. They check in every single day to all the county Health Directors to check in on their current supplies and current need. And each county should have two times as many events as they need on any given basis on the basis of how we procure and process the redistribution or distribution with those assets. That is something every morning we check in with and we update. That is a protocol we have advanced. That is what duncan does. By well that things can change and that we need to double down on our procurement and double down on our redistribution of these assets. That is a dynamic reality. We are well of that and we have strategies to address that. Those strategies include regionally prepositionening these ventilators which we have done. Ppe. We mentioned yesterday the significant capacity for california to procure hundreds of millions of unites of units of protective gear. N95 masks but also cover alls and gowns, gloves, shields, and the like. I know that people are there wanting and demanding more ppe in realtime. Our grocers. We recognize that our ihss support needs more. Their teams need more ppe. And we just want folks to know as soon as we get deliveries, we get them right back out. Quite literally, hundreds of thousands went out yesterday every day. We are pushing these things out. The announcement we made yesterday was not immediate. It was over the next few weeks. Over the next few weeks, were going to start seeing the numbers increase significantly, and the redistribution of those assets in realtime. That is an update on the ppe side and ventilator side. Overall numbers in the state of california. Some good news on those icu numbers, but again, just one day, one point. Well check in tomorrow. And of course, the next few days to see if those numbers continue to show positive signs. Also, i want to just make a point to those that are anxious on another topic about the delay of the fishing season in the state of california. I may have lost half of you, but if i was watching, i would start paying attention right now. I am passionate about fishing myself, and i am getting concerns from people that we have canceled the fishing season. That is not the case. We are not canceling the fishing season. We just want to delay and not deny that season. Here is why. I hope it makes some sense based on my perspective. I hope i can extend a capacity of understanding at least on the way we are thinking about this. We have two small counties calm us up that have some of the greatest niching in the world. They have fishing season coming up, and they are just worried about being overwhelmed by everyone that want to get out and get on those streams. People will wait every year for the beginning of the next season. And they felt concerned about the number of people. That is quite rational and the Healthcare System up there does not have the resources that that many other systems do if they be in need. Realized that we need the county Health Directors and to then to address that anxiety. That is what we have proposed to do. We have technical problems because somebody called in the system was overwhelmed, and we delayed an official decision on this. But let me just make this point clear to all the people that love the outdoors and love more broadly on the state of california. We care about addressing your anxiety. We are not ending the season. We just want to delay it a little bit and work with the counties to address the surge of interests and the need to keep everybody protected and everybody safe. The dea is talking about fishing. Health crisis. It is important as all of us are trying to find some semblance of normalcy at a time of deep, deep anxiety. The number of covid19 cases across the United States continues to rise as new york and new jersey are now experiencing their deadliest days. The governor of new york, andrew cuomo says he is bringing in more Funeral Directors as 799 people died just yesterday. Vice president mike pence says philadelphia could be the next hot spot there in the northeast and urges people to take steps now to contain the spread. In a statement, the Health Department wrote we take these cases very seriously and have established a task force to address the unique needs and challenges of these facilities. We are told Staff Members have mild symptoms and are isolated at home. One patient, to though, is in the hospital. And Santa Clara County is the bay areas hardesthit county and said if hospitals are ready to provide help to anyone who needs it. Santa clara county operates four hospitals in san jose, gilroy and morgan hill which are responding and preparing for a surge in covid19. Since the outbreak, emergency room visits at those hospitals are down 33 from their typical volume. Typically, we would see 600 visits. We are down 250 visits to our emergency room. Those individuals that are presenting to our emergency room are acutely ill. 23 to 27 experiencing illnesses. And of those individuals, only about 10 to 15 tested positive for covid. Along with the countyowned hospitals, there are about 30 hospitals across Santa Clara County. Some people are demanding the release of inmates at the jail in dublin as the number of confirmed corona virus cases there at that jail is on the rise. There are at least 11 covid 19 cases at the jail jail. Seven inmatings are still awaiting test results. Hundreds of low level inmates were released early because of the virus. Advocates say this there are still too many inside the jail. They want to stop. No new people should enter the jail. If people need care. If people need support because they are harming themselves or others, then there are other places to get and give that support. Inmates to be transferred from santa rita to other facilities where they can be at least six feet apart. To be released through weekend. There is a teleconference schedule for tomorrow.
