Days after his letter about the crisis became public. Captain brett crozier, who is from santa rosa, asked the navy to remove 90 of the crew of the uss Theodore Roosevelt to stop the spread of covid19 on not removed because of his letter, or rather for allowing the complexity of this challenge with the outbreak on the ship to overwhelm his ability to act professionally. Tampanina staff has been without a paycheck for nearly 3 weeks now, and no one is feeling it more than their owner. It is a really hard for me, for my staff, because they always supported me here, theyve always been next to me, and always, now i feel really bad for my staff because, all of a sudden, they dont have a job, and their family, and they have kids. Reporter the owner was so worried about taking care of his staff, he started a gofundme page and has raised over 30,000. That is the kind of boss we all need during these times. By the way, the restaurant was named after the owners favorite restaurant on the island of capri, where he grew up. No matter what it takes, his doors will open again. Hopefully that is very soon. I am Frank Mallicoat, ktvu fox2 news. Thank you. Coming up on mornings on 2 at 9 00, the 2 trillion stimulus package offering relief for Small Businesses. In our next half hour, when businesses to start applying to the program, and why relief checks may not be coming anytime soon. Plus, hey there i will be right back. Having a look at the apps helping us connect when we are socially isolated. Good morning, welcome back to mornings on 2. As we all shift to the new normal of working from home, and doing work from our computers and devices, a lot of us are doing that for the foreseeable future. More people are desperate to connect. National tech life columnist, jennifer jolly, joins us for a story she first broke yesterday on a new video chat app, and a handful of other critical tools helping people who have to work this way for the foreseeable future. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning. I am sorry, i had no idea you were coming to me for a tease. That is a part of what is going on now that we are all in this new normal of working from home and relying on these video chat apps to do everything from live television, to our business meetings, to really the only facetoface can medication we are having with our loa lifelin i was the only reporter in the world to go handson with facebooks new messenger for desktop app. I have been using it for over a week and launched yesterday. The reason it launched yesterday . Facebook messenger saw a 100 increase in people making video calls from desktops. It was built to be a mobile app, but it is the way we all need to communicate right now. You can get up to eight people in the same screen, at the same time. It is free, simple, having is that Human Connection we are all craving as we need it most. Messenger for desktop, it isnt a separate app for what you already have when you log into the main social network. That is the browser version. You have to get a new one from the app store, works on ios and windows. You download it and see right away how easy it is to talk to people from all over the world with a few taps. I have to tell you, testing it out this past week, going from little to no contact with the outside world to seeing all of my favorite people in my living room, use it on portal tv, it was so much more emotional and so much more therapeutic than i expected. Using it for my daughters geneva 19th birthday. I host a virtual happy hour. As well as school, just all kinds of Different Things that we have used it for. It is an incredible way, it is a more safe and walled off way to make these connections when we need them most. Jen, can you tell me, now that everyone is doing all these video chats at home, what are some of the big dos and donts of how to appear professional if you are talking to your boss . Or maybe you are talking to your childs schoolteacher . How do you make your calls look, and also sound good . Whi step is to do them on a laptop or desktop, if you can. If you are doing them on a mobile device, put it down somewhere, have that camera, the camera you are using, web camera. I could not think of the word for a second. Web camera you are using, have that at eye level. Try not to have it looking up at you. Drop your laptop up on something. Have a light ine. [ laughter ] reporter try to have depth behind you. I am in my kitchen right now, so i have a living room and sitting room behind me. If you dont have a place to get that kind of depth, whatever you do try not to be right in front of a white wall because that looks like a mug shot. I have seen a couple of live shots, video chat live shots, where there has been a mess behind people and that has been distracting. Try to clear the clutter if you can. Dont worry if a dog or child comes in. That is our new normal, it is okay. My own dog has come in about 15 times already. Those are the e. Pretend that your microphone is always hot, just like you do for television. And pretend that camera is always on. There have been some pretty infamous episodes over the past week or two where people get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of Conference Calls to attend, whether you see yourself or not, that that camera is hot i wanted to ask you, we are just about to go here but, do you think that we could have done this 10 years ago . You have been a tech reporter for a long time and even just 10 short years ago, i dont think. Reporter definitely we could not have done this a few years ago. In fact, we of the applications have been using were set up for business and enterprise. The fbi has had to put out warnings about security issues. A lot werent made for Large Businesses with large i. T. Departments. So, even now we are having growing pains and hiccups. That is why Something Like a messenger for desktop is nice. It is preapproved. Zoom mongers cannot come in the middle, and have your meeting, especially when youre having classes, and my daughter goes to davis, uc davis, she had her first lecture the other day on a different video chat app. It was zoom bombed and they had to stop the class. Coming up next right here on mornings on 2 the 9, more testing sites for coronavirus popping up in the bay area. In the next half hour, we will talk to you about the new drive through testing site in the city of San Francisco. Plus, no home opener for the San Francisco giants. We will speak live with the giant ceo about his reaction to cancel games in the bay area and across major league baseball. What we do now will forever change our tomorrow. So lets do the right thing, today. Lets stay at home. Lets wash up. Lets always keep our distance please, six feet apart at least. Lets look after ourselves, as well as others. It will all be worth it. We can all do our part. So those on the front line can do their part. And when this is over, we will all, continue, to thrive. A San Francisco giants home opener was slated for today. A perfect friday matinee against the dodgers out of los angeles. Instead, oracle park is empty, players, coaches, and most fans are all at home as no baseball is being played right now. Lets check in with the ceo of the San Francisco giants. Good morning to you larry. Good morning. I wish we were all able to be at the ballpark. Together. I was going to say usually weie wow at the 9 00 hour, right in front of th many lives impacted right now. Hospitals are packed, unfortunately, people are losing their lives. But i wanted to talk about sports and specifically baseball right now. Let me open it up to you. There is a wide range of emotions and my house, my children not being able to play Little League or softball or going to the home opener. What are you feeling on this day . First of all, we are feeling deeply for everyone doing such amazing work and treating such amazing sacrifice on the front lines. The giants family feels that deeply. You know everybody, the First Responders, our fans are hurting. Our community is hurting. We do believe that there is an opportunity for institutions like the giants to create a healing function. So, we are reaching out to our fans. Light and some glimmers of g warmth and smiles to simulate openingday online on our various social media functions, we will actually have an opening day and will have a first pitch and when we play a great giants game we will have all of those messages from giants celebrities. I think one of the things we think about, a lot, it is the ballpark workers. And, they are not able to work, we are creating funds to keep them, to embolden them as much as we can financially. We are reaching out to everyone and staying tightly connected as a family. Is like 700,000 larry . 1. 7 million. We will supplement unemployment and we will also have an Emergency Fund for those who are, who have special hardships. To try to keep everybody as close to whole, as if they were working as much as they possibly can. Everybody on the front lines, the hospitals, San Francisco general, and everyone here, what i really want to encourage from the giants family is please, please shelter at home. Please heed the words of the mayor. We are the San Francisco giants, we are all in this together. Throughout the bay area i think the responses been amazing to those please and i think hopefully we can be ahead of the curb in our community. It is strange to think a few weeks ago you guys were down in scottsdale and spring training was up and running, here we are, with an empty ballpark of what wouldve been the home opener. If i could ask you about baseball, whether or not we will play this year, would you be in favor of a season that started around the allstar break . And went through the month of september, possibly leaking into october . We would be in favor of a Public Health clearance of returning baseball. And allowing the healing functions to, to sooth the american soul right away. If you look at times of going way back, going back to the spanish flu which was in 1918, which was horrible, baseball provided a healing function even way back then over a century ago. More locally, think about after 9 11, and after the earthquake come of people coming together. The difference here is that when baseball does return, we are going to have to be careful, make sure the Public Health measures are observed. In what form it returns . It could be more through television. You know, your network carries the playoffs and the world series and, so, maybe there is some limitations around how we can gather but that is okay. We think that the healing function, whether it occurs at the ballpark or, whether it occurs, you know, through television and through digital communication, it would really be great for the soul of america. It is got to be done in a safe way. As a for the players. Do you think there is a cutoff date . If this goes on and, you havent set a date, say we reached july 1st and we still dont know whether or not we have hit the peak, when do we throw in the towel and say you know what . Lets not worry about it this year . It is hard to throw out dates, but i think that, everybody understandecial circumstances. You can have a season they can get a qualifying team to a postseason, i think that is the goal. What this season constitutes, how many games, it is really hard to say. Your scenario, when you mentioned july, early july or july, i think sure, that could constitute a season. The other thing is you can make up games, you know, after the season. What was the originally scheduled, you can put some regularseason games into october as well. Do you think the fewer games that we pay our amine play, lets say we do play half a season, whoever would win the world series, there would be less integrity into it . I dont know if that is the word but obviously not as special or unique . I understand that you are talking about the soul of sports, the soul of baseball that heals a community, i agree. But, does the championship lose a little luster there . I dont want to hypothesize too much about that but i think the answer is no. If you have a short season, or when we have a short season, i think there is going to be love for your players, love for your community. I see a lot of people, you know, just bonding through happening or having the competition. I dont think that it would be anything, people will remember this year and a lot of different ways. You how the players are able to put themselves together and, competed for their fan bases. I think there will be some special nature to it, that might make it more compelling, and more powerful of a statement that team x was able to win a championship underneath the circumstances. Excellent point right there. As i do this interview with you i have a baseball in my hands. I know i am starving for the sport, for all sports. Hopefully, we will get back on the ball field there. Right about now i just want to remind everyone, lets think about the ballpark workers who cannot get to the ballpark lets think about returning in a way that is healthy, and then, what i was thinking about, what is it 9 30 or 10 00, i would be walking into the ballpark early on a day like today. Smelling the hotdogs grilling, the garlic fries getting ready, seeing all we will return to th be back to that. Doing what you are doing. Stay sheltered at home and lets try to do the very, very best we can to get on the other side of this. I am with you on that. Larry baer stay safe, be strong and thank you for taking the time. We appreciate it. Thank you mike. See you soon coming up next right here on mornings on 2 the 9 , the new recommendations when it comes to wearing masks. Should be a lot quieter on wednesday for us but colder, and the amount projected for the sierra is in feet. 1. 5 inch, santa cruz that, santa rosa. Also for the Santa Cruz Mountains but if kirkwood will pick up 38 inches of snow we will declare a victory, i would not be surprised if that doesnt happen. This is a better set up for them than us but we will still get some rain. Mostly sunny, breezy at times and then everything increases tonight. So, yeah i am terrified to go outside. Reporter nine out of every 10 americans are now under a stay at home order. Governors say it is making a difference. Officials in new york expect to run out by sunday. At cdc headquarters in atlanta, ktvu fox2 news i dont know about you at home, t one and get my family some masks as well. There is a new recommendation y mask on. Lets get over to elissa harrington, who has more on reporter good morning. That is right if you dont have a hospital grade mask at home that is fine. In fact they say they want to reserve those for First Responders anyway. You just need a piece of cloth. A bandanna, a scarf, there are tutorials going around. People cutting up all the t shirts, anything that can cover your face when you are out in public. Doctor Anthony Fauci with the White House Coronavirus task force talked about why they are making these new recommendations. The virus can actually be spread, even when people just speak, as opposed to coughing and sneezing. The better part of that when you are out and you cannot maintain a six for distance to wear some sort of facial covering. Reporter when it comes to masks, Officials Say it is not just that someone can be infected and not know it, they are also learning the virus lingers in the air longer and travels further than he previously thought.
