Dog parks, picnic areas, basketball and tennis courts, golf courses, all of them are closed. This new order requires essential businesses must have a plan in place to keep at a safe distance and most construction is prohibited. Every unnecessary contact increases the chance that the virus may spread from one person to another. Santa clara announced the extension of shelter in place orders yesterday. The numbers of cases jumped from 138 to 890 in the last few weeks, county officials are seeing a slow down in the numbers of reported cases and tightening the conditions could accelerate the decline. We cannot afford to hope we can impose these regulations weeks from now. This is the moment when it counts the most to save lives, weeks from now we will have regretted that we did not move sooner. Social distancing is team mandatory and all businesses that are not essential are required to close immediately. The San Jose Police department have started patrols, they said warnings can end a business license or give the bus owner a misdemeanor charge. In california there are 8600 cases confirmed and 182 people have died. 5,000 people are in the in the hospital and either have the coronavirus or are suspected of having the coronavirus. Right now there are 2400 cases of the coronavirus. Today is the first of the month. Tenants Rights Groups are calling for rent and mortgage payments to be canceled without penalty. Allie rasmus is live with more on this story. Reporter organizations across the country are calling for rent to be canceled debt and penalty free. Its what some tenants groups nationwide want to see happen. They also supported a temporary stop of mortgages while the shelter in place orders remain in effect. They believe many renters have no options because they have no income right now. They are coordinating a virtual nationwide News Conference to talk about this. We spoke with one of the organizations supporting this idea locally. Landlords and banks would not do this. We are asking these huge institutions to step up. One of our examples is it the largest landlord in San Francisco, backed by huge outside investment money. Reporter veritas is the largest landlord in San Francisco. The committee is going to call on governor gavin newsom to support this plan for rent cancellation. County supervisors support this idea. This is a statewide moratorium on all evections and that he mains in effect until the end of may. Good samaritan and Regional Hospital saw nerses demonstrating 30 minutes ago. National nurses united is demanding that healthcare operators provide the protection that nurses and Staff Members need. Nurses saw they are reusing masks until they break. We use one each day, the next day and the next day, until it goes bad. The nurses said Patient Safety is their top priority but say that is much harder when they are not protected. Another protest is planned tomorrow afternoon from 4 00 to 4 30. Supervisor of schools may announce that schools will be canceled for the year. Trying to treas the anxiety about whether or not kids are going going to go back to school this calendar year or not. I have been clear in my belief that they will not. The governor said by closing California Public schools, it could help districts prepare better education plans for distance learning. Many people are concerned about a dire projection from the white house from the Coronavirus Task force that said almost a quarter of a million americans could die from covid19. The president said that the next two weeks will be very painful. My elderly parents, for the first time in their married life, will have to be alone even though they have five children and those five churp have their families but safety does not allow us to be physically present with them. It would endanger their lives. No doubt the community will be challenged but sometimes when you are challenged, it does bring out the best in humanity. There is no question that the values that stand behind passover and easter can be fulfilled in the age of the Coronavirus Crisis because those values are about taking care of those who are most at risk. We do have ways of doing that even if we can not fussily be together. That means that although the practices may be slidely different, the values can be heightened, that is the true spirit of these holidays. Santa rosa police are mourning the loss of a veteran detective who was napa countys first confirmed coronavirus death, detective Marylou Armer served with the Santa Rosa Police for the past two decades. She was one of eight officers in the department who tested positive. A memorial for her is growing outside of the Police Station and flags are flying at half staff. The police chief said that the department has indeed lost a special person, tweeting, words cannot express the hurt with Marylou Armers passing, our prayers are with her family. She said First Responders need as much protection on the front lines but that delivery people need to be safe too. Reporter volunteers at the San Francisco Marin Food Bank are getting a safety briefing, keeping their distance in our new covid19 world. Demand is up due to job loss and reduced hours. Its hard for us to tell which clients are coming from another pantry and which are new to the system but we are seeing more people than we have seen before. Reporter the San Francisco food bank serves one in five families in the county. 110,000 meals a day, much of that was allocated through the schools but all 45 of their School Pantries are closed. We have had to find other ways to serve people. The school was such an easy way for a parent to drop off a child and pickup food. Its hard to replicate that. Reporter there are drive through pantries like this one. Despite the difficult times, volunteers are still willing and able but with the seniors at home this is definitely a younger bunch. I am more of a service to my community. I can volunteer and i appreciate a place that talks into account all of the safety so we can still support our community with some action. Reporter across the bay at the almada county bank they serve one in five in the county. While the warehouse is stocked with food, the coronavirus could wipe that out so cash donations are vital. Every dollar allows us to leverage the money. Money is the easiest for us to handle of the because we do not have as many volunteers, its harder to sort through food so we are asking for cash donations. Its difficult with our changing world, cash donations are probably the best way to help out the food bank. Contra costa county is expecting 1400 people to die during the pandemic, this projection is higher than many others but they are concerned about the lack of testing and whether people will follow social distancing guidelines. So far there are three deaths linkked to the virus and 200 cases. The usps said that a worker tested positive for the coronavirus. They said there is no evidence that the virus can spread through the system but they are providing sanitizers and gloves and masks to employees. It has been a challenging time for parents at home as well as the students at home adapting to different learn ways but itin special education classes. Last year 20,000 students were enrolled in california schools with special education needs. A lot of the children need the hands on face to face one on one contact. Doing it through a computer is hard for all of us. School officials said there is a learning process for everyone. In San Francisco, a laud off tech worker as well as a Restaurant Owner are using their skills to help protect Small Businesses from the coronavirus. They are using a laser to install guards at Convenience Stores and restaurants. It creates a barrier to stop the spread of the virus. Now with the current situation, i am glad to be able to do something that makes an impact. The skills to create these guards came from building art work at burning man. The goal is to help Small Businesses in San Francisco and expand to other cities. Here at ktvu fox 2 news we are rasing awareness and funds for bay area food banks which you might imagine, have gone through a lot of changes since the coronavirus outbreak. We have lisa, the communicate ing director for the food bank. In addition to the 178,000 people we are serving every month, we are also now havings to come with up emergency food boxes to provcommunity. Which means purchasing quite a bit more food than we have before. I know a lot has changed. Is the easiest way to help out to volunteer or maybe a cash donation. Financial donations are definitely what we need right now. Again because we are purchasing so much more food, financial donations will go far in helping us to do that. You folks are able to lempleg that money. A dla goes a long way. That is true, for every dollar donated we are able to provide two meals in in volunte we have noticed people canceling volunteer shifts but we put out a request for additional volunteers and new people are g up. We just asking the community to keep checking our website and signing up as opportunities become available. In terms of protecting those volunteers and your employees, what kind of precautions are you taking . Every volunteer, whether you are volunteering in the warehouse or at our distribution site, we are having them wear gloves. Whether they are touching produce or canned goods. Then also the emergency food boxes, we are trying to put together as much food in our warehouse so as few hands as possible are touching the food that is going out. I know a lot of people are hurt. Some folks are losing their jobs, others are off right now. Have you noticed an increase in demand for food . We are seeing an increase, between 30 and 50 at our sites. Wow.
