Well, the problem in the mountains has been cleared where we had that spill of debris on southbound 17. Traffic is light, so when crashes clear up, they dont leave much of a wake behind them. This is a look at the clear roads here, traffic moving well on all the bay area bridges. For six bay area counties, an extended stay at home order will remain in place all the way until may 3rd. We are talking about playgrounds, tennis basketball courts, dog parks all closed. The new ordered requires essential businesses to have a plan in place to keep employees apart. Every unnecessary contact with another person increases the chance that the virus may spread from one person to another. Officials announced the extension of the shelterin place order yesterday. The number of covid19 cases in the county grew from 138 to 890 in just a few weeks. Officials say they are starting to see a slowdown in reported cases, and thats heightening the restrictions right now. We cannot afford to simply hope we can impose these regulations weeks from now. This is the moment when it counts the most to save lives. Weeks from now, we will only have regretted that we did not move sooner. Social distancing is now deemed mandatory in all businesses that are not essential. Police officers are already out patrolling and say warnings can escalate the suspension of a business license or misdemeanor charge of violating a Public Health order. Some are calling for rent and mortgage payments to be canceled. Many payments are due today. Allie rasmus has more on the story. Reporter good morning. Sanfranciscos supervisors say they support the idea of canceling rent, debt and penaltyfree, and placing a moratorium on mortgages for the duration of the shelterin place period. This month and possibly even next month, well be speaking with a Tenant Advocacy Group about the issue. The idea is that people arent working and businesses are shut down. More than 3 million americans have filed for unemployment in a week and thats expected to rise. Some believe rent this month and possibly next should be canceled without penalty. There is a virtual nationwide News Conference on zoom to talk about the issue later this afternoon. Here in the bay area, San Francisco supervisors are among the local leaders who support this concept. A group called the San Francisco Housing Rights Committee will be speaking about the effort later today. They will be calling on the governor as well as Veritas Investments to support this idea of rent cancellation. We will be speaking with someone from that organization and also getting input from Property Owners and homeowners associations to see how this will affect them, later in the snow. Many parents and teachers say they believe the state superintendent will announce that classes will not resume on campus for the rest of the year. The governor hinted that will be the case. Trying to address the anxiety of parents like me and my wife, and millions of others, about whether or not kids are going to go back to school this calendar year or not. I have been clear in my belief they will not. The governor says making the decision now to close all Public Schools in the state would help districts prepare better education plans for Distance Learning and allows them to close School Buildings for maintenance that normally has to be completed during summer break. Schools in San Francisco are handing out laptops during the stay at home orders. About 4,000 of the 56,000 students in the district dont have access to the internet at home. School leaders havent yet rolled out and online plan. Officials say they dont want to have a plan where students with access can continue to learn and those without are left behind. We knew that we needed to get laptops into the hands of students. Recently we received a 2 million gift from toma bravo, an equity firm. That was to help us deploy both meals and Distance Learning. The School District hopes to have all students back in the virtual classroom later this month. On wall street, stocks are sinking again. People who filed 2019 tax returns with direct deposit information will likely get the payments first. International flights at sfo have been reduced by about 52 , on average less than 12 flights per day departing from boarding area a. All International Flights will now use a single concourse. Boarding area a is closed and all International Flights will depart from boarding area g. The airport decided to get this going yesterday and the transition has gone smoothly so far. One security checkpoint is d s point of entry for international travel. Repairs will be made in boarding area a. They say because Congress Gave the airlines a bailout, the airlines have a moral responsibility to back their customers. Many travelers complain airlines only offer travel vouchers or credit as compensation. San francisco estimates it will lose 1 billion because of the pandemic. The mayor says the Economic Impact from the pandemic is likely to increase the citys expected deficit from 420 million to 1. 7 billion because businesses in the city have closed or cut back hours since the outbreak started and the shelterinplace order went into effect. Sanfrancisco expects to lose another 2 million it had forecast from real estate transfer and hotel taxes. In San Bernardino county, all residents at a nursing home are now isolated after 51 residents and six staffers tested positive for the coronavirus. Now many have jobs that are either not there anymore or put on hold, and many more are turning to the Alameda County food bank for help. The director of the food bank is joining us this morning. Good morning, susan. Good morning. Tell me what youre getting from the community you serve. We are hearing from many more community members. Our help line calls have increased by 1000 . We went from taking about 30 calls a day to 300. And we are keeping up pretty well, but we are about a day behind in returning those calls. Twothirds of those are coming from Senior Citizens in the community. And about half of those are from people who have never ever asked us for help before. How are you changing how you deliver what could be life saving food. Our operation has changed 100 . We are bagging emergency food bags every single day in our facility. We are no longer welcoming volunteers into the facility to help us. Actually thats quite distressing to us because volunteers keep us energized and happy and keep the produce sorted. We are getting help from california conservation corps and from county workers, Alameda County workers. So they have replaced our individual volunteers coming in. Food is flowing out rather rapidly from our facility, which is good. It indicates to us that people are still able to get services, which is important. Lets talk about the food thats coming in before it goes out. Are you having any suppliers say to you, i just cant afford to give or i dont have the food to give to you now . Right now we are finding many suppliers do have additional food and have been generously donating it to us. We are also trying to purchase food right now because items like protein foods, canned protein goods, they are very valuable. Every food bank in the country is trying to buy them, along with the u. S. Government. So those are harder to find right now. We have products on order and some are coming in, so thats really good. And probably one of the questions you want to ask is, you know, how can the Community Help us if they cant come to the facility and volunteer . Donations are still grateful accepted.
